(Part 2 of 2) David Akeman affectionately known as “Stringbean” was born on June 17, 1915 to a farm family in Annville, Kentucky. Anneville is a small town in Jackson County, Kentucky. Stringbean's love for music began at an early age. Before he was 8 years old, he built his first instrument out of a shoebox and thread. He most likely developed his early love for music from his father who was a successful banjo player who often played throughout the community. By the time Stringbean was 12, he bought his own banjo and then began playing at local dances and built a reputation as an excellent musician. While working construction type work building roads and planting trees, he continued playing his banjo with a goal of making it big in the music business. His career began when he entered a contest being judged by singer-guitarist-musical saw player Asa Martin. After impressing Martin, he soon joined Martin's band.During a performance, Martin had forgotten David Akeman's name. So he just introduced Akeman as “String Beans” The nickname was given to him based on his tall lanky frame. Apparently, the name stuck and David Akeman would become known simply as String Bean. Not only did Stringbean become known for his musical abilities, he also became known for being a funny guy. Stringbean became known as a comedian musician. He also broadcast on WLAP out of Lexington, Kentucky, and played with different groups during the late 1930s. Strange enough, old country music back in the 30s didn't include much banjo playing. However, Stringbean was able to keep banjo playing relevant in country music.Interesting enough, Stringbean was also a decent semi pro baseball player. His baseball playing skills became known to Bill Monroe, who had his own semi pro club. Monroe was so impressed with Stringbean that he added Stringbean to his band. He played in Monroe's band from 1943 until 1945.After Stringbean left Monroe in 1945, he was replaced by another popular banjo player named Earl Scruggs, who had a different sound than Stringbean. Stringbean would also go on marry his sweetheart Estelle Stanfill in 1945. The following year he would begin working with another banjo player named Louis Marshall Jones, affectionately known as Grandpa Jones. The two men would both be together doing comedy in the television program Hee Haw. Grandpa Jones was a WWII veteran and would become Stringbean's closest friend. The men also became neighbors in Goodlettsville, Tennessee.Akeman was one of the Opry's top stars throughout the 1950s. Oddly enough, he didn't begin recording on his own until the early '60s, when he signed to the Starday label. He had hits with "Chewing Gum" and "I Wonder Where Wanda Went," and recorded seven albums between 1961 and 1972.His first album was titled Old Time Pickin' and Grinnin' with Stringbean which was released in 1961. His music was considered folk stories with a taste of comedy. At the time, Stringbean and his buddy Grandpa Jones became the two biggest old time banjo players of their era.In 1969, a country style comedy would come to television. The program would be called Hee Haw and was on television from 1969 to 1993. The program lasted for 26 seasons and recorded 655 episodes. Any popular country musician who was anybody appeared on the show.Unfortunately, Stringbean and his wife Estelle would be tragically murdered on November 10, 1973. After the couple returned home from a performance at the Grand Ole Opry, they walked in on a robbery by two men. Stringbean was shot to death in front of his fireplace and his wife Estelle was shot to death outside their home while trying to flee the robbers. It would be Grandpa Jones who would find the bodies of his beloved friends the next day. Grandpa Jones had plans to pick Stringbean up the next day for a a planned hunting trip. Grandpa Jones would learn the sad truth when he pulled up to his friend's cabin at 2308 Baker Road near Ridgetop, Tennessee. According to author Taylor Hagood, Stringbean and Estelle didn't believe in using banks. Both were alive during the Great Depression when many people who had money in their banks lost it all.Stringbean was known to keep thousands of dollars in cash laying around his house. Grandpa warned him many times to not keep his money in the house. He told Stringbean that one day, keeping that cash around the house would get him killed. When Grandpa found the bodies of his murdered friends, he knew the day he worried about had finally come. The murders shocked Nashville residents. Author Taylor Hagood would write a book about Strinbean's life and death. For his book about Stringbean, Hagood interviewed one of the lead investigators in the case, surviving members of Stringbean's family and fellow musicians who knew Stringbean personally. He then compiled his findings into the book titled Stringbean: The Life and Murder of a Country Legend. If you enjoy reading. Tim has on Boxer Alan Blyweiss and CEO Shane Manney of 5 Stones Fight Club to talk boxing, addiction, christianity, family and much more. https://www.5stonesfightclub.org/events Follow and Subscribe and Rate Five Stars on Spotify and Apple and YouTube Legendary heavyweight champ Mike Tyson is coming to a local boxing gym, not to fight, but to help raise money for the gym's ongoing Christian missions. Shane Manney, CEO and director of ministry at 5 Stones Fight Club in Annville, said Tyson, among other big boxing names such as ‘Irish' Mickey Ward, are confirmed to appear at a VIP dinner and 15-fight boxing match set for late October in Palmyra. “We've got contracts for everybody that's on that list,” Manney told PennLive, referring to the who's who roster of veteran boxers scheduled to appear, including Tim Witherspoon, Iran Barkley, Riddick Bowe, Vinny Paz, Vincent Pettway and Michael Olajide, among others. Manney said the gym's trainer, Alan Blyweiss, simply began phoning up the former pro fighters he knew to ask them to appear at the gym's first-ever fund-raising dinner and boxing match. “Alan spared with Tyson, Lennox Lewis. He's been around for a while. His boxing history is pretty good,” Manney said of Blyweiss, a Baltimore-born brawler who's been boxing since age 7. Manney said he met Blyweiss about 15 years ago when the ex-boxer had his hands full fighting with life – and losing. Since then, the two have collaborated on establishing the boxing gym that doubles as a church and Christian mission. “He met Christ, and God radically changed his life,” Manney said of Blyweiss. “We are working together, doing this kind of stuff now.” Even the fight club's name, 5 Stones, is biblical, referring to the only ammunition David armed himself with for his big showdown with the giant, Goliath. “Everybody has giants in their lives, whether it's addiction, depression, anxiety or fitness issues,” Manney said. “The whole focus is to get people physically fit, mentally focused and spiritually charged.” To do that, the boxing gym takes down the ropes on Sundays, and Manney preaches right from the ring to a congregation of about 80 fighters, some of them veterans, who are at various stages of getting up from life's canvass. A VIP dinner featuring all of the named pro fighters is set for Friday evening, Oct. 28, at the gym. Cost is $100 per person, with capacity limited to 300 people. The 15-bout amateur boxing match is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at In the Net sports facility outside Palmyra. General admission is $25 and ringside seats are $65. 5 Stones is also selling 10-seat ringside tables for $2,500, which will feature visits with all of the veteran guest fighters, including Tyson. Sponsorships for the event are priced at $5,000. Additional details are here. Tim Witherspoon Jr. (@terribleii) is Young, Black and Suburban. Today Nate & Evan go birding with David Yeany, Avian Ecologist for the Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program (PNHP) at the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC). David has been studying winter movements of Evening Grosbeaks in the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) for the past few years. We discuss the 5 major questions in his study.why do evening grosbeaks keep returning to this area? Do they have true site fidelity? Where do these irruptive populations return to nest? How far and wide do they roam throughout the regional landscape during winter? What can we learn about the timing of their movements? Additionally we get to know exactly how David is tracking these migrants through North America using the MOTUS and nanotags. In this amazing irruptive year for Evening Grosbeaks, we think you will really enjoy the insight David provides on this beautiful species of birds.BIODavid Yeany II serves as Avian Ecologist for the Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program (PNHP) at the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC). David joined WPC in 2011 and has 16 years of professional experience in conservation biology, conducting ornithological studies throughout Maryland and Pennsylvania. His current work includes avian ecology and monitoring, wildlife-habitat relationship studies, mapping important habitats for rare species, spatial analysis in GIS, and conservation projects for Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN), particularly birds. Some of his projects included shale gas impacts assessments on forest interior birds, bird habitat relationships in the PA Wilds region, statewide high elevation peatland bird surveys and monitoring, statewide grassland bird SGCN surveys, co-founding the Allegheny Bird Conservation Alliance, and collaborating on tracking studies of wintering evening grosbeaks and breeding Swainson’s thrush using nanotag technology and the Motus Wildlife Tracking System. David represents the Natural Heritage Program on the Pennsylvania Biological Survey (PABS) Ornithological Technical Committee. He also has been an active member of the Pennsylvania Ornithological Society since 2012, and during fall 2019, David was elected to the PSO Board of Directors. In 2020, he was elected to a three-year term on the Pennsylvania Ornithological Records Committee (PORC). Prior to joining WPC, David was the Important Bird Areas Coordinator for Audubon Maryland-DC, where he helped identify critical bird habitats, developed conservation strategies for IBAs, and conducted monitoring for at-risk bird populations. In Maryland, his projects included extensive marsh bird surveys in coastal areas of the Chesapeake Bay and Delmarva Peninsula, wintering waterfowl research, forest restoration bird monitoring, and targeted surveys of rare bird species. He has past experience working in the Wildlife Division at Fort Indiantown Gap National Guard Training Center in Annville, PA and for the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry, District 8 (Clarion) conducting wildlife and habitat inventory and research. Come On A Once In A Lifetime Vacation With Us To Tuscany! Just Click The Picture Below For Details Or Call (877) 279-2350 SHOW NOTES INTRODUCING DAKOTA GRUMBINE! Today we have a story of a young man who is striving for excellence in his pork enterprise.  It is this type of outlook and motivation that is allowing him to succeed. Dakota Grumbine is the 2020 Pennsylvania State Star in Agribusiness.  They have their mid-winter convention and January, so he has already received this award.  What Dakota has done is replicable by anyone on any property of 3-5 acres.  He has come up with a system of raising pigs in a manner that is requested by people and restaurants in his community.  He also had specialized in Berkshire pork so that he can tout all of the positive sides of the flavor in that style of pork. Dakota's business got its start while having dinner in a restaurant with his father one night.  He knew that this restaurant bought local food, and he had heard that they were in need of a pork producer.  While they were there he asked if the owner was on site, and he was.  They struck up a conversation, and a business relationship was developed. Since that time between Dakota's efforts and the word of mouth coming from the owner of that restaurant, he has built "Grumbine's Berkshires".  He has a great website but says that he wants to improve upon it going forward.  He has a lot of plans for this business and his future, and he definitely lays out a roadmap for anyone who loves pigs and would like to start a good livestock business. SUPERVISED AGRICULTURAL EXPERIENCE: Pork Production HIGH SCHOOL: Annville-Cleona High School; Annville, Pennsylvania MASCOT: Dutchmen FFA ADVISOR: Tim Gettle CONTACT INFORMATION FOR DAKOTA GRUMBINE: Click on the picture below to be taken to the Annville-Cleona High School FFA Department's website: Dakota's FFA Advisor's Email Address: TGettle@acschools.org Annville-Cleona High School's Telephone Number: 717-867-7700 FFA LINKS: National FFA Organization Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAE's) Support FFA  Donate to FFA - One way that FFA students are able to start small businesses is through an FFA grant of $1,000.  In 2014, 141 FFA students received these grants.  With your donations, more students can get this head start - pay it forward. REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA: Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world.  FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food. Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation.  The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth. Farmers, ranchers and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store: “The future of American agriculture depends on the involvement and investment in America’s youth, In order to prepare for the population of tomorrow, we need to encourage America’s youth today, and show that careers in agriculture are profitable, rewarding, and vital.”. Podcast 32: Steel City Beer Wholesalers! Shane and Mary from Steel City Beer Wholesalers join us for a week of shares and beer stories! This week we interviewed Shane and Mary about their history with craft beer and bringing awesome brands to Pittsburgh. Shane has some great analogies for meeting and signing breweries and how the business operates. Tinder/food and all kinds of experiences. We'll list all the beers at the bottom of this post. Too many to list throughout. Shane opened our eyes to how 12 Percent Beer Project got started. Check out their book called “Food and Beer.” They're an import company who expanded to local beers and now they bring big hitters to a lot of the country and they work directly with Steel City here in Pittsburgh. We discussed how Shane tied down Rotunda Brewery from Annville. Jake is muling a ton of Boston beer home this week so we're gonna have a crazy amount of Trillium and Treehouse. We get Shane and Mary's input on their top 3 favorite beers. Southside bars to visit - Bar 11 and Jacks, for all your non craft beer binge drinking needs! Shane's Christmas Eve 2016 story is well worth the listen. (approximately at the 30 minute mark) We bitch about cable and the new hotness, YouTube TV. We dive into Mary's story a little bit and she tells us the story of the weirdest yinzer bakery experience of all time. The French don't do bagels apparently. Shane explains how he acquired a few Aslin kegs around the time Juicy Brews Birthday Party was going on. Shane gets into who the competition is in the Pittsburgh Wholesaler industry. We get the inside scoop a little bit into a big hit against their brands when they lost Pizza Boy to one of the competitors, under shady circumstances. Mary has strong opinions about how shitty peoples' ratings of beer are. We blast dumb Untappd ratings. We finally ask Shane where he's from. He grew up in LA and moved to Pittsburgh for college and stuck around because his family is from here. We get Shane and Mary's top 5 emojis. Preacher: In flashbacks we saw Tulip and Jesse lose a baby after getting screwed by Carlos. They tried living a life without crime and both became depressed and miserable. They split up. Jesse headed back to Annville to start preaching and Tulip moved to New Orleans and ended up marrying Victor until she got a lead on Carlos's whereabouts. In the present, all of Victor's goons remained frozen by Genesis while Jesse figured out what to do with Victor. Meanwhile, Tulip brought Victor's daughter, Allie, back to Dennis's place and punched Cassidy for blabbing. Cassidy went over to the mansion and was able to convince Jesse to let Victor live in exchange for divorce papers. Preacher is starting the hit it's stride as our lone show this summer. I've also thrown in a Retro Pick that goes back to the very beginning of DC Animation on TV. Let's jump right in:   The holo-projectors in hell were on the fritz and Eugene had to mingle with his fellow damned. He made friends with Hitler, learned that people in Hell are supposed to be mean and ended up joining in on a beatdown of Adolf to look cool. Jesse and Cassidy discovered that the fake God they met in Annville was a local N'Orleans actor who was shot in the chest so he could play the part from Heaven. Tulip was brought to Victor and given the stinkeye by all her old friends. Jesse tracked her down, fought Victor's torture expert and was choking out Victor when Tulip revealed that Victor was her husband. Last Minute Reveal: The Saint of Killers was strolling down the highway about to cross a bridge into N'Orleans!   The New Adventures of Superman S01E11 "The Neolithic Nightmare" 10/15/1966

Welcome to the DC TV Report for the week ending Saturday July 1st, 2017. Submitted by Edward O'Hare, nickname To Be Determined. There were 3 new episodes this week: Preacher Season 2 Premiere - Jesse, Tulip and Cassidy began searching for God and were cornered by some cops when a mysterious cowboy (the Saint of Killers) gunned down the entire sheriff's department. The gang snuck away and met up with a friend of Jesse's name Mike, who happened to be helping a girl named Ashley purge addiction by locking her in a dark cage. Mike directed Jesse to a strip club owner named Tammy, and later killed himself to avoid helping SoK. Cassidy asked Tulip if he should tell Jesse they slept together and was told to keep his mouth shut. Cassidy accidentally shot Tammy through the chest but Jesse learned from her that God had been to She She's a few times because he loved the Jazz band. Last Minute Reveal: After a wild, kinky night with Tulip, Jesse went for a smoke and ran into the SoK! Jesse tried using Genesis, but it did not appear to effect the cowboy, who drew his gun!   Preacher - Genesis did not work on SoK and our heroes escaped the motel while SoK slaughtered dozens of gun aficionados. The gang found Fiore posing as a magician committing suicide and reappearing over and over. Jesse learned that the SoK was using Genesis to track the gang and that only Fiore could call the SoK off. Cassidy served Fiore a narcotics buffet and convinced him to play ball. Tulip and Jesse learned Annville was destroyed, humped away their feelings and decided to get hitched. A scary guy named Gary from Tulip's past came snooping around. Tulip had to kill Gary to avoid getting choke-slammed to death and decided to call off the wedding. Jesse decided to follow the music and look for God in New Orleans. Last Minute Reveal: Fiore double-crossed Jesse by telling SoK the deal is still on in exchange for a bullet through the heart that actually killed him!   iZombie Season 3 Finale - Only Major and Justin survived the explosion. Justin broke up with Liv for sleeping around. Major asked Chase Graves to scratch him. Chase told Blaine to screw and business at the Scratching Post died. Seattle was hit with an Aleutian flu outbreak and the whole city was ordered to get immunized. Clive and Liv discovered that Carey Gold orchestrated all of this season's tragedies. Chase killed Carey and was forced to put D-Day plan B into motion. The flu vaccine was mixed with Zombie virus. Clive got back together with Dale but couldn't prevent her from getting infected. Chase went on TV and explained his plan to make Seattle a haven for Zombies and that brains were being donated from all over the country. Last Minute Reveal: Ravi got his hands on a sliver of Utopium, developed a Zombie vaccine, took it and asked Liv to scratch him! She agreed and the last thing we heard after the screen went black was a creepy gasp from Ravi and Liv telling him “Don't be a dick.”

We have returned from our hiatus to start season 4 with an incredible show with AMC's Preacher. This comic book adaptation has been in the works since the mid-1990's. Fans of the story and comics Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg finally bring this to the screen and the adaptation is different from the source material giving it a fresh essence that has Garth Ennis' blessing. The show is a campy, fun and close adaptation of the comic book. There are a few moments of action, which makes the show seem slow, and at times it was hard to have empathy for Jesse Custer - many of his sermons delivered seemed dry and without any sort of conviction or zeal. It was hard to believe Dominic Cooper in those moments. Visually, the show is doing a great job with sweeping establishing shots showing off the sadness and desperation of Annville. As directors both Rogan and Goldberg do a great job in telling a very complex story in a packed 60 minute show. The writer Sam Caitlin did an amazing job and it is worth reading to see how a great script is written. This is definitely something you should give your attention to past the first episode. If the F'ed up, wild, bizarre and twisted story that is Preacher comes to light in the rest of the episodes the audience is in for a special treat. And AMC is the right network for that to happen.

I think we mentioned in our last podcast, we only hoped they could keep up the pace after the pilot. Did they ever? Cassidy continues to shine, and I wonder aloud if a change was made between his fighting style between the pilot and our second episode, "See". We talk about the wonders of short shorts, Tulip being a treat, both in dialogue and action, and how manifest destiny translates to dark skinned folks getting their wigs split. Jesse struggles with trying to build up his congregation, and this week's tasks involve tempering the desires of a pedophile, and finding the right way to address a comatose teenager. All this, as well as properly rating 'The Big Lebowksi' and 'Clerks' on this week's South Kongress Fan X Fan Show!

FEAR ME: The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead & Preacher Podcast

So we said we were going to cover AMC's new show Preacher after the 1st episode airs, but we just couldn't wait. The pilot episode was incredible and if you haven't seen it yet, you must. Great characters, dark humor and a very stylized direction set it apart from most shows. We're introduced to 3 main characters in Tulip, Cassidy and the preacher Jesse Custer as they come together in Annville, TX. There seems to be another invisible force at work that is being trailed by 2 mysterious characters we really know nothing about. In this struggle between good and evil we can only assume some major things are getting ready to be brought upon this small Texas town. We only hope the show can keep up the pace! Custer is accidentally possessed by the supernatural creature named Genesis in an incident which killed his entire congregation and flattened his church. Genesis, the product of the unauthorized, unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon, is an infant with no sense of individual will. However, as it is composed of both pure goodness and pure evil, it might have enough power to rival that of God Himself. In other words, Jesse Custer, bonded to Genesis, may have become the most powerful being in the universe. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dweebthepeople/support
