I wanted to have Dan on the show to learn more about the inner workings of the mysterious private tutor world.  When I was coming up, private tutors were hardly a thing; now, they can be a difference maker.  Access to elite educational opportunities is a key line of division in our fracturing society and, while in education we tend to look for systemic solutions, what's going on with private tutors suggests that individual intervention may be where we want to focus.  Tune in to this fascinating conversation to learn:Why parents around the world are willing to pay people like Dan upwards of $2000 per hour to help their kids do better on standardized testsWhat close reading is and why it's the secret to standardized test success Just what is being measured by standardized tests, and why should we care about itWhy, despite their issues and limitations, many schools are turning back to standardized test scores to help sort candidatesHow the best schools in the world are designed to create lifelong learners rather than for information/curriculum deliveryAnd Much, much moreConnect with Nick Halaris: Nick Halaris website and newletter (sign up!) She writes extensively on issues facing people with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times, the Atlantic, Slate, the Progressive. Pepper is a professor of art history at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where she lives with her husband and daughter, Louisa. I love this conversation because it is not just about folks with intellectual disabilities. We talked about school systems and how they are not set up systemically to support all of our children. And this is not at the fault of teachers. Teachers are incredible and slaying, and we need to shift the systems in which they work in order to better serve the classroom as a whole, and we got to dive into what that looks like and talk about some of those things. I shared my biggest dreams for what tests look like and how we're utilizing them. I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Come on over to Instagram @seed.and.sew and share your thoughts with us. We'll have a post up about this episode, and I want to hear your takeaways and your thoughts and feedback and whether or not your kid might benefit from some of the things that we toss up in this episode. And if you're a teacher, come share your challenges and grievances and what you would love to see change as well. I want to hear from all of you. I want to continue this conversation. In the wake of COVID, many colleges dropped SAT and ACT test requirements. Recently however, schools including Dartmouth, Yale, and Brown have mandated standardized test scores once again. Could the move hurt less economically privileged applicants? David Deming joins EconoFact Chats to highlight that even though standardized tests can be gamed by more privileged students through extensive test preparation, and retaking of tests, they remain less biased than other factors that can help students stand out in the admissions process. And getting rid of standardized testing, or even going ‘test optional,' could make the problem of privilege in college admissions worse, instead of better. Syllabus host Mark Oppenheimer and Bob Schaeffer discuss the evolution of college admissions testing, the recent trend towards test-optional policies, and whether high school records and holistic evaluations are better predictors of college success than standardized tests.  Guest Bio: Schaeffer is the public education director of FairTest and a member of its board of directors. One of the many ways the COVID pandemic upended education was with regards to college admissions. Widespread lockdowns meant that in-person tests like the SAT and ACT were no longer offered. That led dozens of high-end universities to drop those requirements. Many thought this was a good thing, leveling the playing field for disadvantaged applicants. But recently, there's been a trend to reverse that. Which students are being hurt by this decision and which ones are getting a leg up? Our guest, John Friedman, Professor of Economics at Brown University and Co-Director of Opportunity Insights at Harvard University, studies the impact of standardized testing on social capital and economic mobility.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Legislative committees get the first look at bills introduced in the Indiana Statehouse and can be the difference between whether they die or move on to the chamber floor.
