South African writer Rešoketšwe Manenzhe joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to talk about the influence that wealthy South African immigrants like Elon Musk and Peter Thiel are having on the Trump administration and conservative U.S. politics in general. Manenzhe talks about how growing up under apartheid may have shaped these men's views, how South Africans view Musk now, and what the country's history can tell us about the current American political situation. She also discusses South Africa's Immorality Act of 1927 and reads from her novel, Scatterlings. At the beginning of Peter's first letter, he reminds us who we are. At the end, he reminds us what we have. Being firmly convinced of both is essential if we're going to stand firm under the suffering we will experience this side of heaven.
In this episode, I have the privilege of introducing you to renowned storyteller and mythologist, Dr. Martin Shaw. Dr Shaw was born and raised in England and is author of seventeen books, including "A Branch from the Lightning Tree: Ecstatic Myth and the Grace of Wildness”, ”Snowy Tower: Parzival and the Wet, Black Branch of Language,” and “Scatterlings, Getting Claimed in the age of Amnesia” Each book showcases Shaw's unique ability to weave together ancient wisdom, poetic language, and a deep understanding of the human psyche. Eric Utne, founder of the Utne Reader says of Martin: “Martin Shaw is a conjurer, a 13th century troubadour dropped in our midst. He breathes into his characters a beating pulse, agile speech and bedazzling wit. Catch him anyway you can.” Shaw recently completed a 2 week tour across Canada and I had the great pleasure of spending time with him at his final stop in Victoria BC before his return to the UK. Martin graciously agreed to join me in a conversation on my podcast. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did! How do I sum up this conversation? Because we could have talked for days. Dr. Shaw's work is incredibly powerful, so get ready for a very depth-oriented and intense conversation. For example, Dr. Shaw and I cover the real meaning of blessing and the importance of being defeated—not winning. The power of story and myth, comfort versus shelter, and how it all relates to how we're living now. Martin Shaw is widely regarded as one of the most exciting teachers of the mythic imagination. Author of the award-winning Mythteller trilogy (A Branch from the Lightning Tree, Snowy Tower, Scatterlings), he founded the Oral Tradition and Mythic Life courses at Stanford University, and is director of the Westcountry School of Myth in the UK. He has introduced thousands of people to mythology, and for twenty years, Shaw has been a wilderness rites of passage guide, working with at-risk youth, those who are unwell, returning veterans as well as many women and men seeking a deeper life. His translations of Gaelic poetry and folklore (with Tony Hoagland) have been published in Orion Magazine, Poetry International, and Poetry Magazine. Dr. Shaw's work has received top praise from the likes of Malidoma Somé, Stephen Jenkinson, Coleman Barks, Robert Densmore, and Robert Bly. His essay and conversation with Ai Weiwei on myth and migration was released by the Marciano Arts foundation. Ariella is a beekeeper, writer, teacher, musician and mother living in Northern California. Her work with honey bees came through a lifelong interest in human connection with the non-human world. She is a graduate of the Lyceum, a European shamanic pathway with the bee and the serpent as its central motifs. Within this tradition, she is trained in the healing and seership modality known as the Pollen Method. Her work is a fusion of her love for the natural world and embodied, womb-centric practices. Ariella seeks to foster a deeper relationship between humans and the natural world through honey bees, seeing the bee as a bridge species between our domestic lives and the wild, both within and around us. She is a lover of wild places, liminal spaces and the song of the land. She teaches shamanic dreamwork, natural beekeeping, and women's retreats all guided by the honeyed wisdom of the serpent and the bee. You can find more about her work at www.honeybeewild.com and on instagram at beekeepinginskirts. Below is the text of a beautiful post of hers I read from a recent Instagram post. You'll see why I and many others are so enamored with her writings. “It's not really about beekeeping. This love affair. This devotion to doing it better. To listening. To finding another route that gives and heals, instead of takes. We can call it beekeeping, because, surely, there are some tricks of the trade, some caring for the bees in their boxes that we can learn. But really, it's about your roots comingling with the mycelia. Really it's about your tears dripping into the river. Really it's about the moon dipping into your dreams and curling around a whispered tune you think you remember from long ago. It's not even about saving, unless the saving is you and you are the forest, and the forest is the sea, and the sea is the stars.⠀ ⠀ What it's about, is Weaving. ⠀ Reweaving. Rewilding. Restoring. Revivifying. ⠀ It's about Listening. ⠀ Ear to the hive. Womb to the earth. ⠀ It's about Grief and Exaltation. ⠀ Sting in your heart, honey on your lips.⠀ It's about Remembering.” References: In our conversation we spoke about the work of mythologist Martin Shaw and specifically this trailer for his book Scatterlings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0T7UP1U1Ts https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/57195435-scatterlings And Ari also referred to the writings of Joanna Macy. Jane Campion is famous for The Piano and a baby grand plays a crucial role in her new film The Power of the Dog, in which Benedict Cumberbatch plays a heavy smoking, unwashed and deeply troubled rancher in 1920s Montana. Briony Hanson reviews the film for Front Row and considers the lengths to which actors will go to create a character. All the nominees for this year's Turner Prize are artistic collectives. In the run-up to the award ceremony, Front Row will hear what the prize means to each of them. This evening, we hear from Cooking Sections, an artistic duo who reflect on the climate emergency and how we can make the food we eat more environmentally friendly. When he accepted the Booker Prize earlier this month for his novel The Promise, South African author Damon Galgut said: ‘This has been a great year for African writing and I'd like to accept this on behalf of all the stories told and untold, the writers heard and unheard from the remarkable continent that I'm part of. Please keep listening to us, there's a lot more to come…' Tonight we shine a spotlight on contemporary literature from his home country of South Africa and bring Damon together in conversation from Cape Town with the award-winning debut author of Scatterlings, Rešoketšwe Manenzhe. Dr. Martin Shaw speaks about his new book, Smoke Hole: Looking to the Wild in the Time of the Spyglass. At a time when we are all confronted by not one, but many crossroads in our lives, Dr. Shaw delivers a work of literary tonic. In Smoke Hole, Martin shares three ancient stories that are metaphors for our world today, a world where we are losing our sense of direction. With extraordinary poignancy, Smoke Hole illuminates the complexities of contemporary life and–through story–a way forward. Martin Shaw is widely regarded as one of the most exciting teachers of the mythic imagination. I'm very excited to introduce my guest today - prolific author and mythteller Dr. Martin Shaw. I first encountered Martin's writing in the foreword to Stephen Jenkinson's book Die Wise, and was immediately hooked by the elegant and unruly prose that leapt from the page. I found the same ecstatic spirit in Martin's popular essays and numerous books including Scatterlings and the more recent Courting the Wild Twin. Over the years, we've crossed paths at numerous teachings and locales, from a small island off the coast of British Columbia, to a 1000 year old pub near Dartmoor National Park in the UK, where he lives. Martin has spent many years as a wilderness rites-of-passage guide, and honed his craft as a mythteller learning directly with the greats Robert Bly, James Hillman, and Michael Meade... among many others. I knew that one day I needed to speak to Martin about his time in the mythopoetic men's movement, alongside his teaching house Westcountry School of Myth- who are self-described as a “school of courtly love disguised as a monastery for elegant pirates. In our interview today we discuss range of topics: from a bardic role of the mythteller, why we are in the underworld (but don't know it yet), and how this time of coronavirus might be an invitation into our collective initiation. In the 1920s, John Lyerly was a ruthless mountain Sheriff who killed himself in the room where the Asheville Mystery Museum was originally housed. Though the museum has moved, the Sheriff has refused to leave the "staff" alone. He seems to follow us. He is at the center of many strange occurrences in our research that we've never shared before. Our friend, Missy Hill, joins Vance, Shelley and Sam to revisit a few incredible and chilling details. PLUS you'll enjoy the premiere of a song dedicated to Lyerly, "The Hounds of Sheriff John," by The Scatterlings. AND Dark 30 reminds us that drugs and alcohol don't mix with just plain stupid!
