We discuss the career of the undersung Nair, from her start as a documentarian through her more recent narrative features like 'The Namesake' and 'The Reluctant Fundamentalist'. Then we discuss the film's wholly singular voice and level of representation; how it refuses simple binaries about a diverse set of cultures, and why extricating a white perspective allows the story to detail difficult realities of non-white experiences. Finally, we discuss the film's impossibly alluring romantic thread between Denzel Washington and first-time performer Sarita Choudhury and the honesty that can be revealed through the pairing of a veteran actor's craft and a non-actor's authenticity. About Mark Cousins Mark is a Northern Irish-Scottish filmmaker and writer. His themes are the inspiring power of cinema, cities, walking, childhood, archives and recovery. At the start of his career he made TV documentaries on childhood, neo-Nazism and Mikhael Gorbachev. In the mid 90s he and the Edinburgh International Film Festival showed films in Sarajevo to support its besieged citizens. His first book was Imagining Reality: The Faber Book of Documentary (“Indispensible” - Times Literary Supplement). His 2004 book The Story of Film was published around the world. The Times called it “by some distance the best book we have read on cinema.” Its latest edition was published in October 2020. His 930 minute film, The Story of Film: An Odyssey (“The place from which all future film revisionism should begin” - New York Times), played in the major film festivals and cinemas, and has had an influence on film education. Michael Moore gave it the Stanley Kubrick Award, it won the Peabody Award, was BAFTA Scotland nominated, and received other prizes. In 2021 he added a sequel film, The Story of Film: A New Generation. It premiered as the launch film of Cannes, was called “poetry in motion” by the Hollywood Reporter, and “the soul of the festival” by Cannes director Thierry Frémaux. Empire magazine called it “a poetic opus” and it was nominated for Grierson award. Cousins' first feature documentary, The First Movie, about kids in Kurdish Iraq, won the Prix Italia. It was inspired by growing up in the Troubles in Northern Ireland and his passionate interest in the role cinema can play in kids' lives. In 2012 he was nominated for the London Awards for Art and Performance and the Screen International award. He was guest curator at the Eye Cinematheque in Amsterdam. His next feature film, What is this Film called Love?, played in 20 countries, at the ICA in London, and was nominated for Best Director by BAFTA Scotland. PJ Harvey called it “revelatory and inspiring”. The rock band Maximo Park wrote a song inspired by it. In 2013 he completed Here be Dragons, a film about the vital role of film archives, especially one in Albania. It won the main prize in the Romania Film Festival. In the same year he made A Story of Children and Film, which was in the official selection in Cannes. He curated Cinema of Childhood, a series of 17 films which toured the UK and Ireland for a year and was supported by the BFI. He received the Visionary Award in Traverse City and the Saltzgeber Prize at the Berlin Film Festival. Then he made Life May Be, co-directed with Iranian filmmaker Mania Akbari, and 6 Desires, an adaptation of DH Lawrence's book Sea and Sardinia. Life May Be was noted for its feminism and innovation and was called “transcendent and extraordinarily delicate”. It won the Don Quixote prize. 6 Desires: DH Lawrence and Sardinia, in which Jarvis Cocker plays the voice of DH Lawrence, had its world premiere at the London Film Festival and its international premiere at Sundance. Cousins had his first retrospective at the Wroclaw film festival. Others have followed in London, Thessaloniki, Finland and Geneva. Cousins' The Oar and the Winnowing Fan was a takeover of the DazedDigital website. His I am Belfast was his first full feature about Northern Ireland. It was released by the BFI. Variety compared it to the great director Dziga Vertov. His BBC/BFI film Atomic, a collaboration with the band Mogwai, played in Hiroshima, near Chernobyl and Coventry Cathedral and at the Edinburgh International Festival. He curated a season of films for the Romanian Cultural Institute and made a fiction film, Stockholm My Love, (starring Neneh Cherry, released by BFI). He completed Bigger than The Shining, a secret project, showable only in underground circumstances, and wrote The Story of Looking (“Like a wise man looking at the stars”, the Guardian; “Brilliant” the New York Times). It was nominated for the Saltire Award for best non-fiction book. Cousins' The Eyes of Orson Welles world premiered in Cannes and received rave reviews. His 2 hour, four-screen Storm in My Heart is about Hollywood sexism and racism. His 14 hour film Women Make Film premiered at the Venice, Toronto and Telluride film festivals, is narrated by Jane Fonda, Sharmila Tagore, Debra Winger, Adjoa Andoh, Kerry Fox and Tilda Swinton, and is showing in many countries. The Times called it “Exquisite, emotionally resonant and intellectually unassailable. Pure poetry.” It won the European Film Academy's inaugural Innovative Storytelling award, and has led to the restoration of a series of films directed by women. Two more recent films are The Storms of Jeremy Thomas, about the legendary film producer – which premiered in Cannes 2021 and won the best documentary in Spain's Dias De Cine - and The Story of Looking, in which he filters the history of looking through his own eye operation. Time Out called it “A rich cinematic journey into the art of seeing and how it connects us with culture, ourselves and each other.” It won the Best Non-Fiction Film award at the Seville Film Festival. Cousins recently completed My Name is Alfred Hitchcock and The March on Rome, an Italian Palomar production about Mussolini and Fascism, part-shot in Cinecitta in Rome and starring Alba Rohrwacher. The latter premiered at the Venice film festival, was called “entirely arresting” by the Guardian, won the audience award for Best International Documentary in Brazil, and was nominated for a European Film Academy Award. The former premiered at the Telluride film festival. In 2022, his films were the subject of a multi screen film installation, Passé Présent Futur, at the huge Plaza cinema in Geneva, and had a retrospective at the Biograf film festival in Bologna. He premiered his first art installation, Like a Huge Scotland, at teh Fruitmarket gallery, Edinburgh, and – along with Cate Blanchette and Sarah Polley - was given the Outstanding Contribution to Cinema medal at the Telluride Film Festival. Cousins has honorary doctorates from the Universities of Edinburgh and Stirling, is Honorary Professor of film at Queen's University, was co-artistic director of Cinema China and did The Ballerina Ballroom Cinema of Dreams and A Pilgrimage, with Tilda Swinton. He and Swinton also ran The 8 ½ Foundation, a two year event which created a movie birthday for children. It was nominated for the Human Rights Award. He was chair of the Belfast Film Festival and Docs Ireland. He was recently given Portugal's Aurelio de Paz dos Reis international award for Outstanding Contribution to Cinema (2019), and the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies Outstanding Achievement Award for his work in screen education (2020). Mark's roles in filmmaking, education and advocacy have widened and deepened with the years. He was an early adopter of small cameras and new technology to evolve a business model for filmmaking which was sustainable, international and creatively free. He has walked across Los Angeles, Belfast, Moscow, Beijing, London, Paris, Berlin, Dakar and Mexico City. He drove from Edinburgh to Mumbai, and loves night swimming. In this episode, we welcome film critic Marya E. Gates to the studio to talk about Mississippi Masala (1991), directed by MIra Nair and starring Sarita Choudhury, Denzel Washington, Roshan Seth, and Sharmila Tagore. Along with chatting about the movie, we interview Marya on her past jobs in marketing for Film Struck and Netflix, the importance of yearning and Eros in romance, and how she's working to dispel the myth of a lack of women-directed films. So far in our superstar series, we've discussed people that are consistently regarded by most as great actors. Now we come to an actor that we think was underrated, despite her fine performances in multiple languages, many genres, and many decades: Sharmila Tagore. Her films we discuss in detail are Devi, An Evening in Paris, and Barnali (available with English subtitles here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52BYscguxrY&feature=youtu.be), plus detours into our favorite hero pairings for her. Gulmohar starring Manoj Bajpayee, Sharmila Tagore, and Amol Palekar begins and ends with a family gathering. There are lines in the film about the fast-changing landscape of Delhi where old bungalows are giving way to skyscrapers. But if strong enough, familial bonds outlast houses. This film gives us the comfort of that. To know more about the movie, Listen to the full movie review of Gulmohar by Anupama Chopra.

Film critics Rahul Desai and Uday Bhatia discuss the new Disney+ Hotstar film, GULMOHAR, starring Manoj Bajpayee and Sharmila Tagore.
Gulmohar, the new Disney+ Hotstar family drama, is to Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding what Kaante was to Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs—a knockoff that doesn't really understand what made the original work in the first place. Overstuffed with characters and subplots, the film wastes talented performers such as Sharmila Tagore and Manoj Bajpayee on poorly written melodrama. We discuss the film's convoluted plotting, the performances of its ensemble cast, and wonder if it would've been any better if it had stuck to the tone of its engaging opening scene. — Hosted by Akhil Arora and Rohan Naahar, The Long Take is fully bootstrapped. Packed with a phenomenal cast including Sharmila Tagore, Manoj Bajpayee and Simran, Gulmohar can be described as an anti-hero to Hum Saath Saath Hain or a new age Baghban. The beauty of the film lies solely in its portrayal of family and the class disparity prevalent in our society. The director, Rahul V. Chittella, does an excellent job at not only capturing beautiful shots, but also heartwarming ones. Tune in!
Veteran actress Sharmila Tagore is all set to make a comeback after 11 years with a family drama ‘Gulmohar', the film that also stars Manoj Bajpayee and Amol Palekar in lead roles. This and much more from the other side of the silver screen in our weekly Bollywood Gupshup.

A voice that has lent pehchaan to female actors for at least 70 years. A voice that evokes reverence. A voice that the entire nation emotes with – for pain, hurt, longing, and joy. There is a Lata Mangeshkar song for every mood. ”Nightingale of India"- Lata Mangeshkar passed away at the age of 92 at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai after contracting pneumonia and COVID-19. Speaking to The Quint, Sharmila Tagore says that Mangeshkar gained such an iconic status because she was resonated with people across generations. She said the legendary singer sang songs for Shobhana Samartha, her daughter Tanuja, and even her daughter, Kajol. In this podcast you will also hear from lyricist, Swanand Kirkire who describes Lata ji as 'phenomenon beyond genius'. But what is it about her that makes so close to hearts of Indians around the globe? The answer is not just one, but many. This podcast is a tribute to the legend. Tune in.
Today's Lost and Found is Shubho Mahurat, directed by Rituparno Ghosh. With Rakhee as the protagonist, the film was Ghosh's personal hat-tip to the innumerable Mrs Marples who reside in every household, unacknowledged, or even uncelebrated. Ghosh paints the character of Ranga pishi, played by Rakhee, with all the necessary quirks of a sharp detective mind. With straight-faced humour and whip-sharp instincts, Ranga pishi is always a step ahead of her miscreant. Pitted against Rakhee's sedate smarts is Sharmila Tagore's seamless flamboyance as a once-relevant Tollywood actress. Ghosh peppered the narrative with frequent cliff-hangers and prompt murders, all along focusing on his female characters' narrative arcs. Ghosh uses Nandita Das' Mallika Sen, the journalist who investigates the mysterious goings-on, as his audience's proxy, thus ensuring that viewers aren't alienated through the runtime of the film.Despite being a murder mystery, Shubho Mahurat spotlit the lives of its multiple women. While Ghosh uses Ranga pishi to enumerate the wonders of homemakers and their adept deduction skills, Padmini Chowdhury, played by Tagore, becomes his muse to an outer, glamorous world of showbiz. As the film progresses, these parallel narratives led by these opposing personalities gain momentum until the rousing climax, where they meet for the first time. Shubho Mahurat is a heady concoction of revenge, love, forgiveness and brittle relationships. So if you're up for a gripping story that also tugs at your heartstrings, you should definitely watch this one. If you haven't watched this flick yet then do so on Amazon Prime Video and HoichoiWell that's some info about the lesser-known film Shubho Mahurat on OTTplay Lost and Found, I shall be back again with another critically acclaimed film soon. Happy New Year! How much can superstars and amazing music elevate a film? In the case of 1972's Amar Prem (translation: Immortal Love), the answer is "all the way to a classic." Superstars Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore, alongside Vinod Mehra, Om Prakash and a clutch of Bollywood bangers, alchemically transform what is, on paper, a typical prostitute-with-a-heart-of-gold story into something genuinely funny, charming and touching. In this episode, as well as the tunes and the icons, we delve into a wider discussion of the Kishore Kumar/Rajesh Khanna combo, RJ's incredible charisma and the importance of relationships in a big city. Pop your headphones on and join us in a singalong: "Yeh Kya Hua..."
For our last episode of the year- look! It's a Hindi film released in 1975 and starring Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra! Sadly, it's not Sholay, but rather Chupke Chupke (or Hush Hush in English), a time-capsuletastic comedy of manners which also stars Sharmila Tagore and Amitabh's actual wife Jaya Bachchan. In this episode, we get stuck into why Sharmila Tagore is the original Elaine Benes, enjoy Om Prakesh getting bemused in as many ways as possible, and discuss the secret significance of whose name comes first in the credits. Warning: The sound of snacks is quite loud on this one. Apologies. We'll deal with it for the next episode.
Catch up on the Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore birthday special! We celebrate the birthdays of both of these living legends, with songs from Chupke Chupke, Anupamaa, Pyar Hi Pyar and Mere Humsafar. Some classic tunes in this show, don't miss it!

Guest Amitava Nag has authored Satyajit Ray's Heroes and Heroines, decoding Ray's unique ability in extracting superlative performances from his actors. Tolly Folly, our limited run podcast about Bengali film, anchored by Sujoy, Beth, and Amrita, concludes with this third episode featuring two separate performances by Suchitra Sen in AANDHIi and Uttam Kumar in NAYAK. Aandhi (1975) is counted as one of the most successful films helmed by Gulzar and is frequently lauded for the leading performances by Suchitra and Sanjeev Kumar. The movie was a controversial fictionalized take on the life of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and spoke about the difficulties faced by women with ambition in a patriarchal society. Nayak (1966) was a rare Uttam collaboration with Satyajit Ray and is a meditation on celebrity. One of the finest films ever made, Nayak remains relevant to this day and features an incredible performance by Uttam. It also co-stars a wonderful Sharmila Tagore among others. If you liked this run of Tolly Folly, we would love to hear from you. Let us know if you’d like to see this series return and what other films you’d like to see discussed.
