Tanuja Prasad (LinkedIn) and I had a conversation about her work in regenerative investments. We talked about the spirit of investments, the driving force behind investment up until this point, how to transcend the extractive paradigm and shift away from the control and force as the governing principles towards something more generative. Tanuja and I spoke of the Systems view of life and how it's influenced our work and thinking. This is a conversation that is profound and subtle. It works with a new set of metaphors and concepts with the ambition to reinvent the fundamentals of investing for a regenerative paradigm. Enjoy!

According to research from Salesforce, 80% of high-performing sales teams say they would rate their training as very good or outstanding. But what does good training actually look like? Shawnna Sumaoang: Hi and welcome to the Win Win Podcast. I'm your host, Shawnna Sumaoang. Join us as we dive into changing trends in the workplace and how to navigate them successfully. Here to discuss this topic is Tanuja Paruchuri, the director of sales enablement at H1. Thanks for joining, Tanuja! I'd love for you to tell us about yourself, your background, and your role. Tanuja Paruchuri: Hi Shawnna. Thanks for having me. I actually started my career in sales and then I got the opportunity to work in sales operations, and I fell into sales enablement, I think, by complete accident. It was kind of a happy accident because I love working with salespeople, but I just wasn’t really cut out for the stress that a quota brings every single quarter. I’m much more of a nurturer, so that’s kind of the background piece of it. As far as my role today at H1, I am, as you said, the director of sales enablement. I report to the sales operations team, but I am a team of one as it relates to enablement and so it’s been kind of a whirlwind here. I’m not at all familiar with healthcare or health tech, even though growing up I always wanted to be a doctor, so I watched a lot of ER and stuff like that, but I didn’t actually ever work in healthcare, so it’s been a steep learning curve for me, frankly. I think of that personally as a very good thing because once I start to get bored in a role or at a job, that’s when I start to look around, and I haven’t been bored in any of the 10 months that I’ve been here so far. I’m really happy to be here and happy to be working with the team. SS: I love that and I think a lot of people that are in the enablement profession probably came through a very similar path. Now, as I mentioned in the intro, I’d love to hear what good sales training looks like for you at H1. TP: Good sales training for me at H1, and really anywhere that I’ve worked, has been all about interactive learning. I am not a person who really enjoys putting something out there and having someone just watch a lecture or watch a video, although those can be useful tools as well, what I really like to see is people being very engaged, asking a lot of questions, and if they’re brave enough to go on camera and give me their best pitch or something like that where we can give them feedback right at the moment. I’m not looking for perfection, I’m definitely looking just for progress or anything, just participation really, and that is what good training looks like to me. I’ll also say that as a part of that, I also love to follow up so that if you learn something in training, then you’re going and using it in real life or when you learn something, you’re following up with a quiz or some kind of measure to actually see if it’s going to ultimately have an impact or not? Or did you actually learn that or not, if you’re not measuring something, you have no idea if it’s having an impact. SS: I couldn’t agree more. Now, tell us a little bit, what did training look like at your organization before you started leveraging Highspot's Training and Coaching platform and what does it look like now? TP: I actually was really lucky coming into H1. During the interview process itself, my manager reached out to me and was like, what do you think about Highspot I was like, obviously it’s great. I’ve used it at several previous companies. I highly recommend it. Then when I came into H1, we had not implemented Highspot just yet. That was gonna be my job as soon as I came in, but we had just bought it, so we were still on the previous platform, and that platform was okay. It served its purpose in the sense that we were able to host training on it, and it served us as a very light LMS, I would say. On the learner end, what I noticed, is that I did use it when I went through that platform for my onboarding. What I noticed most was that it was hard for the learner to know what they had completed, what sections they had completed, and which ones they were to move on to next, which is, I think, a pretty basic function of an LMS. The other part, on the admin side, was also really hard to grade things. Everything was manual. There are no reporting features, so that was extremely difficult and time-consuming and almost made it not even worth it to have an LMS at that point. Now, how it’s changed having implemented Highspot, we’re now able to build all of our courses right within Highspot, and what I love about it is that once the reps have finished their training in Highspot, all the content is already there. They know exactly where to go to find it, they can always go back to the training if they want to in the way that we’ve set it up. I think from their perspective, it’s a lot easier to go through. From our perspective, as an admin, it’s also a lot easier to go through. We’re able to easily pull reports. I’m able to see at a glance who has submitted what and pretty quickly report that to the managers as well. It’s become a lot quicker to process everything. SS: Absolutely. Speed to market is really critical right now. Now, just to shift gears a little bit, on LinkedIn, you shared that one of your areas of expertise is optimizing products and processes to improve productivity, and I think that’s another area that organizations are hyper-focused on, particularly right now that notion of driving as much productivity out of the existing workforce as possible. What are some ways that you’ve leveraged Highspot to optimize training and really use that to improve rep productivity? TP: That's a really good question. I think one of the ways that I’ve used Highspot to drive productivity is definitely just having everything in one place. That’s, I think, the biggest one. I think also getting feedback at the moment has been very impactful. When I see that someone has submitted something into a learning path or a course, I’m able to go in and watch the video, most of the videos that we require of them are like five minutes or less, so I can go in and watch it, give them kind of at the moment feedback or coaching and we can do the same with the managers as well. They’re also given permission to go in there and do the exact same thing, so they’re getting very timely feedback. They’re not having to wait on things, and I think when you think back to the content management side, the learning is so important, but I think it all starts with content and how you’re delivering that content. One thing that I’ve noticed is we also have confluence, and Confluence is great, but it’s also the place where everything goes to die and things are not updated all the time. When you’re going to another platform, another system that’s not always being kept up to date. What you’re having to do as a rep is you’re also having to Slack people and you’re having to wait for a response and say, is this up to date? Is this not up to date? Where’s the new one? Where can I find it? When was it last updated? They are asking all of those tangential questions that go along with a piece of content, whereas in Highspot, you’re able to see right away, whether you’re on a learning path or just in the content system, you’re able to see right away, hey, this is an updated tool. It was updated yesterday. I know the content is current because I know who updated it as well. I think just having all of that information just in one place has made folks extremely productive. I can’t give you a number in terms of how much their productivity has improved because we have not made those calculations yet, but I can tell people are extremely happy. Just another add-on here, when I hear from reps and they’re like slacking me and they’re like, can you just confirm for me the only place we have to go is Highspot, right? I say yes and they’re so relieved when they hear that. They’re like, thank god, thank you for changing this. I hated going to multiple systems. I really appreciate hearing that from them and their feelings. The most important thing is not necessarily what we’re seeing in the reports and all that, but really what they’re telling us and how they’re feeling about it. SS: On that point of feedback, because I know that that often plays a critical role in how you approach optimizing your programs, can you tell our audience about an example of how you’ve leveraged feedback to maybe even improve the training programs that you’re building? TP: Feedback is an interesting thing. As I was looking over these questions ahead of time, I was really thinking about this one. Feedback from who? Feedback from the reps, feedback from the managers, and in my head, it’s feedback from multiple people and in multiple ways. The way I think of it is as I’m going through trainings, if I’m watching something back, that’s one point of feedback is my own feedback of myself. Not just me, but what I’m seeing of others. Typically in the beginning when I was delivering trainings, I was doing these long-form trainings without a lot of back and forth or interactivity, just because I was still in learning mode, too. What I found as I was watching those videos back and chopping them up to put them into Highspot and making them more consumable, was that I noticed people were not paying attention. These were Zoom sessions, so, I’m noticing people are not on camera and when they’re on camera it’s clear that they’re multitasking. All this annoying stuff going on in the background that you do not wanna see your learners doing, and so I realized that the feedback that I got from that was I needed to be a little bit more creative in my approach and make the training more interactive. That was one way I used feedback. Another way was, of course, from the managers as we’re going through this current course that we just finished in Highspot right now for one of our product trainings. I made the mistake of building the rubric outside of Highspot, so I will not be doing that next time. I will be building it right within Highspot next time, but this time I built the feedback loop outside and we met with the managers independently to make sure that they understood the logistics of going into Highspot, accessing the submissions, and being able to rate their direct reports, videos and pitches and all that kind of stuff. What we realized from that was that each manager is approaching their scoring system a little bit differently. That helped me kind of realize, okay, this is what the managers are looking for. This is what they want to see in their direct reports. This is what they’re expecting to happen in training and this is the outcome that they wanna see. At the end of the day, they want their rep to be able to pitch this particular product in this particular way. That has really helped me just meet with them one-on-one to alter the way I train and also the content that I’m putting out there post-training. Another way that I’ve also been really big on feedback is from the reps themselves. I know this is not necessarily a scalable way to do things, however, I find it one of the most effective ways, and I’ve done this at every organization I’ve been at in an enablement capacity, and that is talking to reps one-on-one. I tend to use the survey method and the one-on-one method in tandem to get feedback from reps, but the survey method obviously covers everybody, so that’s a good way to scale. I think it’s really important to have that one-on-one conversation with folks as well, so I tried my best to take like a cross-section of reps. I was looking for people who are new to the organization, people who have been here for a medium amount of time, and then people who have been here a long time. I also wanted to try to take a range of abilities, so people who are maybe underperforming, outperforming, and then kind of on target. Then of course looking for regional, so what part of the world are you in and how do you process content differently based on your culture? Another thing is maybe a difference in age ranges even, and genders because you’re looking across all different demographics, I guess you could say, just to see how people are processing the content that you put out there. I want to have these one-on-one conversations to make sure that I’m not missing the mark, and if I am, please tell me. I’ve tried really hard to cultivate relationships with folks, especially at my current organization, but really anywhere I’ve been to have open relationships with them, like have very honest relationships where they can tell me anything. I call myself the sales therapist, so you can come in, you can tell me anything that you want. My feelings are not gonna be hurt, even if the feedback is critical. It’s better to just get all your feelings out there so we can make things better because that’s really what we’re looking for. We want to make things better. SS: If we dive in a little bit more on that, what are some of your best practices for soliciting some of that meaningful feedback from across the organization, maybe not just sales reps to inform your training programs? TP: That’s a great question. I think typically I’m interacting mostly with reps and their managers, but you’re right, there’s definitely feedback needed from marketing in particular. At H1, I’m a very close partner with the marketing team as well, especially as the SDR team sits on the marketing team. That’s really important to get the feedback from them as well. I treat our SDR team just like sales reps, but the extended marketing team is ABM marketing and brand marketing, product marketing, and other folks I also try to cultivate very close relationships with them. I’ve done lots and lots of one-on-ones, especially with our product marketing director, who has been so gracious with her time and she’s really taught me a lot. The way I learned from her was that she’s very deep in her product knowledge, so what I can do with that is I can take the deep product knowledge and I can simplify it, and then I ask her back like, you know, this is my simplified version, does this still make sense? That’s a good way of getting feedback from her to say that, oh yeah, you know, you got the message right, and I think that’s exactly what the salespeople need to know. As far as actual training on the salespeople and what they’re learning and all that kind of stuff. We do work with our product directors pretty closely because it’s very important that we’re getting the messaging right there and that we’re selling in the right way on the right value props and the right use cases. I try to cultivate those relationships as well as with our SE team also and the SE team solutions engineers, they’re also super helpful in giving feedback and also generally just giving their opinions on what’s going on because they sit on almost every sales call that happens in the organization. They’ll give me information. They’ll tell me, okay, this person doesn’t really seem to have a strong handle on this, and they might give me some very specific feedback, like, okay, they might need more help in discovery, or they might need a little bit of help in prospecting because they didn’t get the right person this time, and so then I can take that and I can build courses around it or I can do sessions around it specifically. That has definitely been very helpful. SS: I love that. Now, I know that you had mentioned that you are just getting started, but how do you plan on ensuring that training is having essentially the desired impact on rep behavior and what are maybe some of the key things that you want to be able to measure to track your success? TP: That’s a great question. This is new to us. We really haven’t dived deeply into the metrics just yet, but what I’m looking for as far as impact goes is being able to reduce ramp time, in particular, especially as we’re onboarding several new reps on certain teams and then faster time to first deal, of course, is what we’re looking for. Then, of course, compressing the deal cycle. Deal velocity is another thing that we’re looking to measure. Now, these are all things that our sales operations team already tracks, but as we’ve been using Highspot and as people are going through the trainings and we’re matching it up the training metrics with, hey, these people have completed X, Y, and Z in Highspot, and they’re pitching at like a level 10 versus a level one, which is presumably worse, and their deal velocity has gotten a lot faster, or they’ve increased their deal velocity or they’ve compressed their ramp time. That’s kind of what we’re eventually going to be looking for, but for now, we’re trying to take all the right actions so that way we can measure this stuff two months down the road, three months down the road, six months down the road. SS: Fantastic. Now I love that future vision. How today are you maybe leveraging Highspot to gather insights on the impact of your training programs? TP: Right now what we’re doing is we’re really in the information-gathering stage. As I mentioned in a previous response, one thing that we’re doing is meeting with all of the managers individually, and we’re making sure that they’re watching the rep pitch videos and making sure that really, we have this rubric set up in a way that gives us specific responses. As the managers are going through these rubrics and really watching the performance of their reps, then we’re able to see does rep performance really correlate to where they stand with respect to their quota. It’s a little surprising. Sometimes it doesn’t exactly match up and so that part has been interesting for me to see. I don’t know what that means in terms of broader impact, but it’s just some interesting information that we’ve gathered so far. SS: Now, from your perspective, what is the value of having a unified platform for enablement to equip, train and coach your reps? How has that helped you drive rep productivity? TP: I think we already kind of covered this actually, but having everything in one place is such a huge plus I think for everyone in the organization. Like I said, when I have sales reps Slack me and they’re like, are you sure the only place we have to go is Highspot? I’m like, yes and they’re so relieved. As we talked about earlier, you see people when they do go to another platform to find the information they need because the rest of our company is still on Confluence. When they go to a Confluence or another platform to find information, sometimes that information is out of date or a person who has left is still in charge of it or something like that. In that case, they have to Slack people, they have to track people down. They have to ask, has this been updated? When was it last updated? Who updated it? What are the new slides that go along with this? All of that kind of stuff and a lot of that has been eliminated now. They don’t have to do that at all. If anything, they’re slacking me and even that doesn’t come too frequently. It comes when there’s something that doesn’t even exist yet. They’re like, we need a new deck for this particular product that we haven’t ever sold before. Well, in that case, that’s fine. That’s something that doesn’t exist. We can go ahead and build that, or we could ask marketing to help build that, whatever it is. The fact is that everything that does exist today is in one singular place, and they’re able to go and find it very easily. SS: I love that. Now, I am curious, just because you have such a diverse background, do you think that there is value in talking about why it’s essential for organizations, especially those in sort of the life sciences field to improve sales productivity? Or do you see so much similarity between your current organization and your past more tech-centric organizations? TP: That’s a really good question. I definitely think optimizing systems and processes is super important no matter where you work, just from a purely economic perspective. I think that makes a lot of sense, but in this case, at H1, we are still a tech company, even though we’re not selling to tech personas, so it is really important for us to have everything updated. Things are moving at the speed of light in our company right now. It’s startup style, so everything is just moving lightning-fast at any given time. I mean, the training that I just put up is already pretty outdated, if that gives you an idea, and I didn’t put it up too long ago. We’re having to build new trainings every day and so I definitely think it’s important to have the capacity and the platform to be able to update things on the fly as quickly as possible and not have to jump through a lot of hoops to be able to do that. Then I think from a life sciences perspective in general, I’ve never worked at a proper life sciences company before, like a pharma company or anything like that, but I think generally when I think of doctors or medicine, yes, there’s like huge advances in terms of the science and all of that, but I think the way things are done is typically it takes a lot of time for those kinds of things to change. It’s like the behavior change is very slow, so I think in that case, yeah, it definitely helps to be able to have systems in place to be able to ramp people up quickly and be able to change things on the fly, change behaviors on the fly. That’s what we really need. We need more agile organizations in general across the board. It doesn’t matter what industry the way things are changing with AI these days, and of course with the macroeconomic conditions. That is my opinion on that very complicated question, but that was a really good question. Thank you for asking that. SS: I love that response. Thank you. I think that that was fantastic. The life sciences space has also been undergoing a lot of change over the last couple of years, so for you guys to be in kind of the tech sector in that world is just, I imagine things are changing quite rapidly for you guys, but very cool. Thank you for listening to this episode of the Win Win podcast. Be sure to tune in next time for our insights on how you can maximize enablement success with Highspot.

Tanuja describes herself as a introvert that has a very outward facing presence. She says she is also a Type A personality. Back in high school Tanuja had a love for agriculture, so she secured a job milking cows at a dairy farm in Easton, PA. She went to the Governors School for Agriculture between her sophomore and junior year. Although, she did not decide to become a farmer as she once thought, she shares how much she enjoyed the experience.Tanuja entered college as a liberal arts major, but found out that she really had a passion for government affairs and politics, so she shifted gears. She went on to graduate school where she had 5 part time jobs to pay the bills. Listen in to hear how grateful she was for all of her different roles. After going to law school and building her career path Tanuja worked for NRG energy for 12 years and served as Executive Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer and Chief of Staff. She says that the gift of her work at NRG was seeing that you can have a purpose driven life and career. Tanuja left NRG Energy with a calling. She had the inclination and inspiration to participate in a yoga training program. All her past experiences have positioned her to be ready to take on the  incredibly important role that she is in now at the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. The Dodge Squad, as Tanuja calls them is in the midst of a transformation  both internally and within their community work. They are on an important equity journey. Visit Geraldine R. Dodge website for more information about the organization's focus. "We are in control of how we show up in this world", Tanuja says. "You are worth the investment. Be intentional about self-compassion – we are not perfect and perfection is not the goal." She has a lot of gratitude for her career path, who she met along the way, who helped to lift and mentor her. This is truly an incredible conversation!Don't forget to listen in to Tanuja's answer to, if I knew then what I know now. Although, more of a behind the scenes type of child growing up, she actually did not realize she was preparing herself for leadership in other ways. She took a leadership role as the manager of the field hockey team in college and traveled with them internationally. This is a great story that she shares during the interview. Now, she manages a team and organization in a totally different way. From wanting to be a school psychologist, to her first job out of college being in banking, to moving over to the not-for-profit or as I say for-impact sector. Eileen was volun-told as a teenager about the importance of giving back, as her mom worked in the not-for-profit sector as well. She was able to see firsthand the benefits of working for an organization that had a mission of giving back in some way to the community. Eileen had always wanted to go back for her master's degree and at the age of 50 she shares how she decided, it was time! Now her career path has come full circle.  Although, she may not be a school psychologist, she is working both with schools and helping to empower girls with courage, confidence and true character.  Many of us know and love those girl scout cookies, but we do not necessarily know about all the programs that the Girl Scouts organization has to offer. Eileen uses her commitment to the mission and her team to ensure that girls in our community are building confidence, leadership skills, public speaking skills, independence, empowerment, and so much more. Sorry we haven't gone back to Bollywood just yet! Smytta needed some young energy, so she chose A Death in the Gunj, the remarkable 2016 debut of Konkona Sen Sharma, daughter of the legendary Aparna Sen. Set in 1979, the story centres around Shutu (Vikrant Massey), who tries to recover from a few setbacks in his personal life through a vacation with his cousin Nandu (Gulshan Devaiah) and Nandu's friends and family at an Anglo-Indian house away from the city. However, things don't exactly go as planned... Just like Monsoon Wedding, The Luncbox and The Lift Boy, this is a subtle and ultimately devastating character drama which demands but rewards close attention. Alex enjoys the scenery,  Om Puri, and the assured direction. Whilst initially disappointed by the lack of song-and-dance, Smytta admires the character direction and unpacks the nuanced social relations, especially between Shutu and the other male characters.  Intrigued? Then jump on your motorbike and join us in the foothills as we discuss A Death in the Gunj!

Hello everyone, welcome to the fifth episode of our podcast P for Parenting. In this podcast, Anubha and Anjali are talking about the importance of nutrition for mothers. In this podcast, Dr. Tanuja Khurana joins them. Tanuja is Celebrity Nutritionist and Dietician. Dr. Tanuja has 20 plus years of experience as a dentist. Being a dentist because of her interests in nutrition and diets, she became a full-time nutritionist. She is a certified nutritionist with a degree from Melbourne University. She told that during pregnancy, mothers usually gain weight. After an interval of 8-9 weeks, it is important to lose weight but the mother has to take care that there should not be any lack of lactation and nourishment to the baby. There is a need for a certain type of diet to increase lactation, which should be taken care of. She also told that the diets of a mother who is breastfeeding should be different from those who are formula feeding. The eating habits of the mother always effects the child's health especially the one who is breastfeeding. If the eating habits of mothers are not healthy during pregnancy and even while lactating, it can have long-term irreversible side effects on a child's health. Children may develop obesity, higher cholesterol effects, or higher blood sugar level. If you want to connect with Dr. Tanuja Khurana mail her at drtannuja.diet@gmail.com

At SCAI, it's an interdisciplinary team of social scientists, computer scientists, software engineers, designers, and program managers from the lab who come together for creating, nurturing and evaluating our research ideas through real world deployments and validations. [Music] Sridhar: Welcome to the Microsoft Research India podcast, where we explore cutting-edge research that’s impacting technology and society. I’m your host, Sridhar Vedantham. [Music] At Microsoft Research India, research focused on societal impact is typically a very interdisciplinary exercise that pulls together social scientists, technology experts and designers. But how does one evaluate or validate the actual impact of research in the real world? Today, we talk to Tanuja Ganu who manages the Societal Impact through Cloud and AI (or SCAI) group in MSR India. [Music] Sridhar Vedantham: Tanuja, welcome to the podcast. I'm really looking forward to this particular edition of what we do here. Because, I know that you manage SCAI and it's quite an intriguing part of the lab. Now before we get into that, tell us a little bit about yourself. Tanuja Ganu: First of all, thanks Sridhar for having me on the podcast today. And uh, yes, uh, I'm not a full-time researcher, but I'm engineer by training and I have done my Master’s in Computer Science. Over the last decade or so, my work is primarily at the intersection of research and engineering, and it's on the applied research side. So throughout my experience and journey, working at research labs and start up, I'm very much interested in taking a research idea through the entire incubation phase to validate its applicability in real world problem settings. Sridhar Vedantham: So, Tanuja, I know you manage this thing called SCAI within the lab and I think it's a very interesting part of the lab. Talk to us a little bit about that, and especially expand upon what SCAI- the term SCAI- itself stands for, because I myself keep tripping up on it whenever I try to explain it. Tanuja Ganu: Yes, Sridhar. So since the inception of our lab, the lab has been doing very interesting work in the societal impact space. Additionally, with the advances in artificial intelligence and cloud-based technologies in recent years there are increased opportunities to address some of these societal problems through technology and amplify its positive effect. So as the name suggests, SCAI, that is Societal Impact through Cloud and Artificial Intelligence, it is an incubation platform within MSR for us to ideate on such research ideas, work with our collaborators like academia, NGOs, social enterprises, startups, and to test or validate our hypothesis through very well defined real world deployments. Also our location in India allows us to witness and carefully analyze various socio-economic challenges. So the solutions that we ideate are inspired by Indian settings and in many cases equally applicable to different parts of the world. Sridhar Vedantham: Interesting, so it sounds like there's a fair amount of difference between the kind of work that SCAI does and between what the rest of the lab actually does in terms of research. Tanuja Ganu: So at MSR India, where research work is mainly along three different axes, firstly advancing the state of the art in science and technology, second is inspiring the direction for technology advances, and the third important axis is building the technology for driving societal impact. So SCAI is primarily focused on social impact access and many of our projects also do have very strong academic and technological impact. At SCAI, it's an interdisciplinary team of social scientists, computer scientists, software engineers, designers, and program managers from the lab who come together for creating, nurturing and evaluating our research ideas through real world deployments and validations. So that's really the difference in terms of the other type of research that we do at lab and what we do at SCAI. Sridhar Vedantham: So when you decide to take up a project or accept it under the SCAI umbrella, what do you actually look for? Tanuja Ganu: Yeah, we look for a few things for defining a SCAI project. So firstly, it should address a significant real-world problem and should have a potential to scale. The second thing is the problem should offer interesting research challenges for our team. The next thing is whether we have credible partners or collaborators with domain expertise to deploy, evaluate and validate of our research. We also look for how we can define rigorous impact evaluation plan for a project. And lastly, we look for what are the feasible graduation paths for the project within two to three years of time horizon. Sridhar Vedantham: What do you mean by graduation? Tanuja Ganu: So, um, there are different ways in which a particular project can complete its successful execution at SCAI center, and that's what we're really terming it as a graduation. And there could be really different types of graduation path depending upon each type of project. Sridhar Vedantham: OK, let's talk a little bit about some of the projects that you are currently doing under the SCAI umbrella. Because to me from what you've said so far, it sounds like there's probably going to be a fairly wide spread of types of projects, and quite a large variety in the type of things that you're doing there. Tanuja Ganu: So yes, Sridhar, that's very true. We are working on a very diverse set of projects right now. And, um, so to give a flavor of our work, I would discuss about two or three projects briefly. The first project is called HAMS that is Harnessing Automobiles for Safety. We all know that road safety is very critical issue and according to World Bank Report globally there are 1.25 million road traffic deaths every year. In India there is one death every 4 minutes. That happens due to road accidents. So, to understand and address this very critical issue of road safety, HAMS project was initiated by our team at MSR, including Venkat Padmanabhan, Akshay Nambi and Satish Sangameswaran. HAMS provides a low cost solution which is being evaluated for automated driver license testing. HAMS includes a smartphone with its associated sensors like camera, accelerometer, etc that is fitted inside a car. It monitors a driver and the driving environment and using AI and edge intelligence, it provides effective feedback on the safe driving practices. So at present, HAMS has been deployed at regional transport office in Dehradun, India for conducting dozens of driver license tests a day, and the feedback from this deployment is very encouraging, since it provides transparency and objectivity to the overall license testing and evaluation process. The second project is in the domain of natural language processing, called Interactive Neural Machine Translation, which was initiated by Kalika Bali and Monojit Choudhury in our NLP team. So, when we look at this problem, there are 7000 plus spoken languages worldwide, and for many many use cases, we often need to translate content from one language to another. Though there are many commercial machine translation tools available today, those are applicable to a very small subset of languages, say 100, which have sufficiently large digital datasets available to train machine learning models. So to aid human translation process as well as for creating digital data set for many low resource or underserved languages, we combine innovations from deep learning and human computer interactions and bring human in the loop. So when we talk about INMT, the initial translation model is bootstrapped using small data set that is available for these languages. And then INMT provides quick suggestions for human translators while they are performing translations. And over time it also helps in creating larger digital datasets which would help in increasing accuracy of translation for such underserved languages. So in INMT we're currently working with three external collaborators called Pratham Books, Translators Without Borders and CGNet Swara to evaluate and enhance INMT. So just to give few examples, Pratham Books is a nonprofit publisher who would like to translate children story books in as many languages as possible. Translators Without Borders is a nonprofit who is working in the areas of crisis relief, health and education, and they would like to evaluate IN&MT for an Ethiopian language called Tigrinya. Our other collaborator CGNet Swara is working with INMT for collecting Hindi Gondi data set. And just to give you one last flavor of one more project… Sridhar Vedantham: So I'm sorry, sorry to interrupt, but I was curious, how do you actually go around selecting or identifying partners and collaborators for these projects? Tanuja Ganu: So when we started thinking about SCAI projects last year, we had initiated a call for proposals where we invited external partners and collaborators to submit various ideas that they do have and the process that they have in addressing some of the societal impact projects and we Interestingly received a huge pool of applications through this call for proposals we received more than 150 applications through that. And through careful evaluation process, as we discussed earlier, we finally selected a few projects to start under SCAI umbrella. Sridhar Vedantham: OK, so I'm sorry I interrupted. You wanted to…you were speaking about another project. Tanuja Ganu: Yeah, so just to give one more flavor of the project that we are currently doing which is addressing another important issue of air pollution. So air pollution is another major concern worldwide, with an estimated 7 million deaths every year, and when we look in India, it's even more serious problem since 13 out of 20 most polluted cities in the world are in India. So to solve the air pollution problem, it is important to get correct monitoring of pollution levels, their timely and seasonal patterns in more granular manner, that is, from multiple locations inside the city. So apart from sophisticated and expensive air pollution monitoring stations feature already available, there are low-cost air pollution sensors which are being deployed for this purpose. But the local sensors tend to drift or develop fault overtime and the entire monitoring and analytical insights are dependent on reliability and correctness of this IoT data. So taking these things into account, we are now evaluating our research project called Dependable IoT for these low-cost air pollution sensors. Dependable IoT helps in automatically identifying and validating the drift or malfunction in the sensors and notifies for recalibration or replacement. So currently we are working with a few startups in this space to evaluate dependable IoT Technology and as the project name such as this is not only limited to air pollution sensing, but this technology is applicable for many other use cases for IoT sensing- in agriculture, food technology or in healthcare. So I guess this gives you a view on some of the diverse projects that now we are doing and working on at present in SCAI. Sridhar Vedantham: Yeah, so this Dependable IoT thing sounds quite interesting. So correct me if I'm wrong, but essentially, what we're saying is that we're trying to figure out ways in which we can ensure that the data that we're receiving in order to extract information from it and make decisions- we're actually trying to figure out our trying to make sure that the data itself is solid. Tanuja Ganu: Absolutely. That's correct, Sridhar, and it's like monitoring the monitor, right? So while we're doing the IoT monitoring and sensing, we need to make sure that the technology that we're putting in place is being monitored and it's giving us reliable and correct data. Sridhar Vedantham: Great. Now what's also coming across to me throughout this conversation is that given the variety of projects and the variety of collaborators that you're looking at in SCAI- would I be right in saying that the kind of people that you have in SCAI in addition to the researchers, obviously who are your internal collaborators, the people who are part of SCAI, are they a very diverse and varied set of people? Tanuja Ganu: Yes, absolutely true, Sridhar. As we discussed earlier, SCAI’s an interdisciplinary team that consists of social scientists, CS researchers, solid software engineers and designers. And we also have a program called SCAI Fellows where fresh under graduates or the candidates who are already working in the industry can join on the specific SCAI project for a fixed time period and contribute towards the development of SCAI project. So particularly in SCAI, in addition to all these technical or academic skills, we're also looking for people who have passion for societal impact and willingness to do the field work and deployment to scale a research idea. Sridhar Vedantham: OK, and you know, you might at any point of time be working on say, four, five or six projects. Uh, what happens to these projects once they are completed? Tanuja Ganu: Yeah, so I would say each project would have a different graduation plan. So whenever a project is complete from the SCAI perspective, we call it as a graduation plan where we would define how this project would then sustainably grow further internally or externally. And this graduation plan would be different for different projects depending upon the nature of the project. So for some of the projects, the graduation plan could be an independent entity that is spun off to take the journey of the project forward by scaling the initial idea to more people, more geographies, or for more use cases. A very good example of this type of graduation plan is a MSR project called 99 DOTS, where researchers like Bill Thies and others at Microsoft Research started this project to address medical adherence for tuberculosis. Over the years, this work has significantly grown and there is an independent entity spun off called Everwell to take the 99 DOTS journey forward. The other type of graduation plan can be putting up a work and technology in the open source wherein the external social enterprises, NGOs or our collaborators can build on top of it and take the solution forward at larger scale. The example of this is our work on interactive machine translation, where we have open sourced our initial work and various collaborators are now using, validating and building on top of this technology. Sridhar Vedantham: OK, and does the work that you do in SCAI or say the validation that you're looking for from research projects or the validation you're looking at of research projects through SCAI- does that feed back further into the research itself, or does it kind of just stay at SCAI? Tanuja Ganu: So, it has two or I would say it would have multiple pathways, but primarily the first thing is certainly the work that we're doing is validating certain research hypothesis that we do have. So some of the output or outcome of these SCAI projects is feeding back into the research areas and validating or invalidating the hypothesis to say how the technology is helping to solve a particular research problem or not. But also if the intervention is successful, it would be useful for external collaborators internally, externally for them to take up this idea forward and utilize the technology that we have built at SCAI to taking it to larger scale. Sridhar Vedantham: OK, so once again coming back to the fact that the projects that you do are of such different nature, how do you actually even define success metrics for SCAI projects? Tanuja Ganu: Yeah, this is a very interesting question, Sridhar. So, the whole purpose of SCAI, as the name suggests, is about bringing social impact through technology innovations. So there is no one fixed set of metrics that would be applicable for each and every project at SCAI. But our success metrics for these projects are geared towards validating whether technological interventions can support the people and ecosystem and actually help address a specific problem or not. And if it does help solve the problem, then how can we amplify the positive effect using technology? So those are really the metrics that we're defining on each of the project depending upon nature of the project. Sridhar Vedantham: So Tanuja, thank you so much for your time. This has been a great conversation and all the best for going forward in SCAI. Tanuja Ganu: Thank you, Sridhar, for having me here and I really enjoyed discussing these projects and ideas with you. Thank you. [Music Ends]

This week, and for the foreseeable future, we're committed to sharing the most updated and reliable information on COVID-19 and MS. Joining me as my guest is Dr. Tanuja Chitnis, a board-certified neurologist specializing in multiple sclerosis, with a dual appointment at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Dr. Chitnis is a Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and a Senior Scientist at the Ann Romney Center for Neurologic Diseases at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, where Dr. Chitnis created the Translational Neuroimmunology Research Center, which is focused on bringing bench discoveries to clinical trials for multiple sclerosis and related diseases. Dr. Chitnis serves on the advisory boards and steering committees of several MS-related organizations, including the National MS Society’s Medical Advisory Committee, and she’s written more than 200 publications and reviews related to multiple sclerosis. We're discussing who, among everyone living with MS, is immunocompromised and who isn't -- and why that matters when it comes to being susceptible to COVID-19. We're talking about whether pandemic-related stress can lead to an MS relapse. And we'll look at the outcomes of MS patients who have already contracted COVID-19. We'll remind you about the value of a fact, and why credible information from reliable sources is so critical right now. And we'll connect you to the video replay of last Friday's Ask An MS Expert webinar.  (I hope you already consider these weekly webinars with leading MS experts answering your questions to be "can't miss" viewing.) We'll also tell you about a new North American MS/COVID-19 patient registry for healthcare professionals that will help define best treatment strategies and best patient outcomes for people living with MS who contract COVID-19 in the future. And now that we all have a bit more time on our hands during the day, we have some suggestions for how you can constructively spend some of that time, including: Taking the University of Washington MS Rehabilitation & Wellness Research Center's online survey Taking the Massachusettes General Hospital online survey Getting involved in iConquer MS patient-powered research ...and, if you happen to be using an iPhone, even giving RealTalk MS a rating & review! A CEO’s Virtual Mentor Episode 11  Board Governance & Effectiveness, Shareholder Activism, and Utility Industry Consolidation and M&A Guests include: Corporate governance expert, Tanuja Dehne Paul Bonavia, Retired Chairman and CEO of UNS Energy Chris Young, Managing Director and head of the Contested Situations Group, Credit Suisse   If you did not join us for our last episode, Episode 10 which was a special podcast on Innovation, you may have missed the announcement that we formed two companies under Leadership Lyceum’s brand: Lyceum Leadership Consulting which provides executive and board of director’s search, board effectiveness review, and an array of services for successor development and board-readiness.  And Lyceum Leadership Productions which brings you this podcast.  We also announced that we would be expanding the programming of the episodes this summer.  Well happy summer!  This is the first of our expanded episodes.  Welcome to Episode 11 which expands the programming into three segments.  We will continue to bring you the in-depth CEO and Director interviews around compelling business situations as a main middle segment, Segment II.  That main segment will be bookended over the next three Episodes with shorter Segments I and III.  At least over the next three episodes, Segment I will cover Board and Corporate Governance Best Practices on one hand and Segment III will cover the consequences of deficiencies in corporate governance, namely shareholder activism, on the other.  We hope you enjoy this expanded coverage which we will be refining over the next few episodes.  So please subscribe through iTunes and give us feedback on the new programming.  Tell us about leadership situations and subjects that you are interested in us exploring.  Please visit our website www.LeadershipLyceum.com for all of our archived media and offerings.  We will be right back to start the program.   Welcome back to this newly expanded Episode 11 of the Leadership Lyceum: A CEO’s Virtual Mentor.  We welcome three fabulous guests to this Episode.    Introduction to Episode 11 Program In Segment I the first of a series on Corporate Governance and Board Effectiveness, we welcome governance expert Tanuja Dehne.  Tanuja serves on two public company boards and is a frequent speaker on board governance -- most recently she was part of the instructor panel for the NACD Advanced Director Professionalism program earlier this month.  In Segment II we welcome Paul Bonavia, retired Chairman and CEO of UNS Energy (better known as Tucson Electric Power).  We will explore the triggers and interconnected events that have led to remarkable levels of consolidation in the electric utility industry and Paul’s leadership of the sale of UNS to Fortis in August 2014. In Segment III, the first of a series on Shareholder Activism, we will be joined by Chris Young, Managing Director and Head of the Contested Situations Group at Credit Suisse.  In the first part of this series we will cover the history of activism and the market for corporate governance, growth in the asset class, and answer a fundamental question: what do activists want?  We will be right back with Segment one with Tanuja Dehne on Corporate Governance and Board Effectiveness.    Segment I: Governance & Board Matters “Corporate Governance and Board Effectiveness” I am delighted to be joined by Tanuja Dehne. Tanuja is a corporate governance expert and serves as an independent director on two NYSE-listed, company boards: Advanced Disposal Services, a $1.4 billion revenue environmental services company and newly IPO’d, Granite Point, a publicly-traded commercial mortgage REIT.  She also dedicates her time to not-for-profit board service including the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, Young Audiences, HomeFront NJ, and Sustainable Jersey. That ends Segment I with Tanuja Dehne.  Join us for our continuing conversation with Tanuja next month in Episode 12 --- we’ll discuss derailers to effective boards and effective leadership styles in the boardroom.  And shall I say it?  Why not.  As a self-promoting reminder, the Lyceum Leadership Consulting does provide third party, Board Effectiveness Review.    Segment II:  Main Feature Interview “Special Guest Paul Bonavia, Retired Chairman and CEO of UNS Energy”  You may have read our article in the May 2017 issue of Public Utilities Fortnightly about our next guest - Paul Bonavia.  By sheer coincidence, I wrote that article for Fortnightly on April 1 of 2017 in Chicago Illinois.  Exactly ten years before that on April 1, 2007, the Illinois General Assembly passed a resolution designating April 1st as “Cheap Trick Day” in Illinois. I am giddy with delight to come as close as I can to a Rolling Stone reporter in featuring this conversation with drummer Paul Bonavia, who in his younger days was in bands with members that would go on to form Cheap Trick.   While I’m sure some subset of our listenership is interested in Paul’s pre-utility rock and roll lifestyle, this conversation was directed toward Paul’s “alternative” lifestyle as a CEO of an investor-owned utility and the sale of the company he led --- to Fortis in August of 2014.  Segment III: Special Subjects Segment “First of a Mini-Series on Shareholder Activism with Chris Young, Head of Contested Situations at Credit Suisse” Welcome to our final segment in this Episode on the dramatic, consternation-filled subject of shareholder activism.  That’s Orson Welles in his introduction to his panic-producing, 1938 radio masterpiece War of the Worlds. For the Lyceum, an allegorical backdrop of an environment well-suited to some “alien” form of activism perhaps? This is our mini-series on Shareholder Activism, and we are joined by Chris Young, Managing Director and Head of the Contested Situations Group at Credit Suisse.  In this first part of this series we will cover the history of activism and the market for corporate governance, growth in the asset class, and answer a fundamental question: what do activists want? As a backdrop, The Wall Street Journal reported recently that shareholder activism, which has been a perennial nuisance for chief executives, is now becoming an existential threat. Activists are going beyond just settling for board seats and are waging campaigns that target changes in top management at the outset. So far in 2017, and this is going back a few weeks right now, but so far in 2017 activists have started nine campaigns targeting top management. This is the fastest pace on record according to FactSet. I have represented two clients this year from the power and utility industry on board searches in the face of shareholder activism.  While two companies experiencing activism does not constitute a trend, my clients’ experience of late certainly seemed to warrant raising awareness with our CEO’s Virtual Mentor listenership by featuring this fascinating and informative conversation with Chris Young.  As we were in production on this podcast, Daniel Loeb, founder of activist investor Third Point, demonstrated this activism genius by accumulating a small 1.25% stake in Nestle, published a letter on a Sunday and two days later, Nestle announced a $20.8 billion share buyback as well as clarifying other strategic objectives. Closing of Segment III That ends Segment III.  We will continue this discussion with Chris Young in late July with Episode 12.  We’ll cover more on the “mainstreaming” of activism as an asset class and we will take apart the activist’s playbook and take you step by step through the Escalation Path.      Preview of Next Month’s Episode 12 We will be back with Episode 12 at the end of July featuring more on corporate governance with Tanuja Dehne and activism with Chris Young and an interview with Allen Leverett, President and CEO of WEC Energy Group in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  WEC has been highly acquisitive over the last decade, Allen and I will discuss the company’s significant growth that has led to a uniquely different collection of operating assets over that time period.  Final Spot: Famous Last Words As we sign off we wrap with another new spot on our program called “Famous Last Words”.  In keeping with our War of the Worlds – Shareholder Activism allegory we will leave you to be restored to the real world in the good hands of, an out-of-character, Mr. Orson Welles.    Thanks for joining us.  We can’t improve without your feedback – write us through our website www.LeadershipLyceum.com and subscribe on iTunes.  See you next time.   Informative and Helpful Links The Lyceum’s Well-Tuned Governance Model https://www.leadershiplyceum.com/lyceum-board-effectiveness   War of the Worlds Link to one the Lyceum’s favorite websites – archive.org.
