Conspirituality

Six chapters on approaches to prospirituality, now that we know (or think we know) what the hell conspirtuality is. This is a long episode, but there are evenly-placed breaks for you all to pause on! Chapter 1: Positions After 4 years, we've come to a natural question at the end of defining the problem of conspirituality. How do we orient ourselves towards possible answers? Chapter 2: The Prospirituality Challenge If you're clear on how spirituality—including beliefs in the supernatural—can be medicine, you can be clearer on where it becomes poison. Chapter 3: I did not expect to be friends with Joseph Baker I never thought I would be friends with a student of A Course in Miracles: maybe my judgments about its inevitably bad impacts are misplaced. Also: it's not a good idea to dismiss anyone on the basis of religious belief if you don't know how that belief actually operates, and you won't unless you talk to them.  Chapter 4: Buddhist Tolerance, Buddhist Repair Conspirituality is right at home within high-demand groups or cults. Paranoid and controlling social structures feed on paranoid and dissociative emotions and ideas. For members and observers alike, it can become difficult to tell whether the content of the religious group is intrinsic to its cruelty, or whether these can be separated. Surprisingly, some high-demand groups can foster reforms from within, with members reframing the very concepts that had been weaponized against them to liberate themselves. In that sense, the doctrines and beliefs can be part of the problem, but also part of the solution.  Chapter 5: Eve Sedgwick Cynicism about religion is an occupational hazard of this beat. It's also popular. At times it's worth questioning the critical economy focused more on deconstruction than on generating ideas and solidarity.  Chapter 6: The Trouble and Joy of Belief and Silence “You will know them by their fruits. Do we gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles?” Matthew 7:16 Show Notes Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People Survivors of an International Buddhist Cult Share Their Stories Paranoid Reading, Reparative Reading Baylor Religion Survey: 3 graphs On the Relation Between Religiosity and the Endorsement of Conspiracy Theories: The Role of Political Orientation Anxious attachment and belief in conspiracy theories There are higher levels of conspiracy beliefs in more corrupt countries The impact of economic inequality on conspiracy beliefs To trust or not to trust in the thrall of the COVID-19 pandemic: Conspiracy endorsement and the role of adverse childhood experiences, epistemic trust, and personality functioning Learn more about your ad choices. On today's episode Heather gets to sit down with author, speaker, and activist Ally Henny to discuss Ally's latest book, I Won't Shut Up: Finding Your Voice When the World Tries to Silence You. Citing studies and anecdotal experience, Ally explains that in our society Black women are often made to feel like their very existence is too loud. Ally then walks us through some of the societal ways in which women are silenced, invites us to think critically about the presentations of women in Scripture, and challenges us to find our voice when the world tries to squelch it. This episode is Part 2 of our three-part “Listening to Black Creators” series and speaking candidly to the Viral Jesus community in our Social Toolkit segment, Heather discusses the obstacles and injustices facing many Black creators on digital canvases such as TikTok and YouTube. We are diving into part two of my conversation with author and advocate Ally Henny. If you missed part one of this conversation I would strongly recommend you check that episode out first so you can hear some context of Ally's life, ministry, and some of her experiences as a Black woman in predominately white Christian spaces, and a glimpse into her journey of allowing herself to speak up and not just allow racism to be what is just an accepted part of her occupying space in the world. This gave birth to her new book I Won't Shut Up: Finding Your Voice When the World Tries to Silence You. Ally shares with us what it can really look like to fight racism from the inside, offers ideas of how to be welcoming in predominately white spaces, and how white people's good intentions can still cause harm if they (including me) aren't willing to lean in when it's uncomfortable and admit we don't know what we don't know. She challenges people to consider what it might look like to embrace discomfort in these conversations. and embracing what we didn't know and engaging people who do know, and then being willing to learn and sit with it. Let's lean in today, friends, and embrace this Kingdom-building work and learn how to better build one another up, and bear one another's burdens as the body of Christ. I hope and pray that every time you encounter the stories on this podcast, you walk away encouraged to live more fully in your story, equipped with how to engage those around you more fully in their story, and how to better see your place in God's story. Today I get to share with you my powerful conversation with the amazing Ally Henny. Ally is an author, a speaker, a minister, an advocate, and the vice president of The Witness, a Black Christian Collective which is an organization committed to encouraging, engaging, and empowering Black Christians toward liberation from racism. This week, Ally released her book I Won't Shut Up: Finding Your Voice When the World Tries to Silence You which one reviewer poignantly and perfectly called “An unvarnished perspective on racism that calls Black women to find their voice.” During our conversation today, Ally is going to share some of the insights from her incredible book as well as some of her experiences as a Black Christian woman who for many, many years felt constantly silenced but perpetually on display for public opinion. She shares how it feels for her to never be “off” because her responses in conversations, even her facial expressions are constantly being evaluated and judged. Or what it feels like to consistently be perceived as a potential threat or as someone who needs to be handled or managed. She unpacks topics such as society's expectation of women being the burden bearers, the helper, and the nurturers in American society, but how that uniquely plays out for many Black women and its roots in systemic harm. Ultimately, Ally shares a glimpse into the culmination of events that led to her finding what she calls her “holy hell no,” the sacred boundary that rose up in her and said I do not deserve to be treated this way and that racism does not have to be an accepted fact of life. Her book moved me so deeply and continued opening my eyes to experiences I've lived in ignorance of, and this conversation continues to remind me about the beauty and the power of not staying silent in the face of injustice and the heart of God to let ALL of our lights shine before men. This conversation goes so deep and wide, that this is actually part one of two episodes, and I can't wait to listen and learn right along with you. Remember friend, no matter where you are in your journey, you matter and your story matters. Wendi and Dfernando's eleventh episode and their guest interview is with singer-musician/actress Hayley Orrantia.  While she may be best known as “Erica Goldberg” on ABC’s hit comedy THE GOLDBERGS, Hayley is no stranger to the country music world.  Her songs have been featured on many Spotify and iTunes playlists, and on Radio Disney Country.  In 2018, she conducted the Strong, Sweet and Southern Tour, her first headlining tour hitting 22 cities across the US.  She released her first EP “The Way Out” in the Spring of 2019 chronicling her grief over a traumatic breakup. On the day of its release, it reached #20 on the US iTunes Country Chart and #3 on the UK iTunes Country Chart. As an only child growing up in Texas, Hayley spent many hours in her room singing along to the music of the great voices of our time. Standing on the stage her father built for her in her bedroom, she sang along to the music of artists from many genres including country, pop and R&B.  Although each artist had their own unique style, all made you feel something through their music.  Singing since the age of 9, she added songwriting to her list of skills at age 13, and began piano and acting at age 14.  Through years of study, practice and performance, Hayley has honed her expressive and soulful style that makes her instantly recognizable to the listener. After spending nearly five years performing at local festivals and events, Hayley came to national prominence on the 1st season of Simon Cowell’s THE X FACTOR USA.  Auditioning initially as a solo artist, she and three other females were assembled by Cowell into a country-pop girl group where they competed in the group category, finishing in 9th place. Her time on the show not only established her musical talent but also her screen appeal, and cemented her desire for a career expressing herself on stage.Hayley lives in Los Angeles while filming THE GOLDBERGS, but calls Nashville home since moving there in 2013.  She spends her time off from THE GOLDBERGS writing and recording, and is honored to be working with many of Nashville’s most prolific songwriters and producers. Her film credits include the independent film COOPER AND THE CASTLE HILLS GANG and the feature film GOD'S NOT DEAD 2 where her original song "Silence You" was featured.Listen to Hayley's musicCheck out Hayley's merchandiseAnd on this episode Wendi and Dfernando talk DESIGNING WOMEN and on the weekly RIPE & ROTTEN REPORT there's Season 8 of THE GOLDBERGS, summer films, RAISING ARIZONA and some other stuff.Follow us on our Instagram: Wendi McLendon-CoveyDfernando ZarembaGENERATION RIPE... and our guest Hayley OrrantiaRemember to subscribe to GENERATION RIPEVisit Dfernando Zaremba's website: dfernandozaremba.com

Why I stopped caring about leanness

“So, tell me why” Silence “You’ve been at this for 22 weeks now, don’t you think its time you stopped?” The prominence of the coffee machine’s whir highlighted my surprise at the question. “Now that I think about it, I don’t even know why I’m doing this!” Yusef and I were discussing our plans moving forward for diet and training and I was furiously chasing 5% body-fat. I’d been dieting for 22 weeks and progress was starting to slow. We sat in a small coffee shop, mulling over carb timing, de novo lipogenesis and the pros and cons of keto. I sat staring past Yusef’s shoulder into space as he spoke…thinking about how great it would be to FINALLY reach my goal, about how I could finally eat to the point of being properly full for the first time in months. When he asked me why, it caught me off guard. Was it for myself? For other people? Who was I even trying to impress? Why...did I even care. I’d been so caught up in the specifics - grams of carbs, numbers of re-feeds and minutes of cardio that I’d totally lost sight of what I was even chasing, why I was putting myself through this. I was even so focussed on some intangible goal in the future that I couldn’t stay present enough to discuss how to get there! For the majority of my training life I thought being lean meant you were successful,  the gold standard. Influenced by magazines, fitness websites and photoshopped versions of my dehydrated idols, I’d decided that to be truly content - I needed to be as lean as I could be. The insidious thing is, looking back, I’d been really lean for weeks by the time I turned to Yusef for help. In reality, I’d surpassed any initial expectations I had of how lean I could get…yet I kept on pushing.   Why did I care?   Simple, but hard to admit. I cared what others thought of me. Don't we all? With predicable consistency we rate our lives against those of others and focus the majority of our actions to impress our peers. We choose the clothes we wear, the cars we drive, the jobs we work, even the people we sleep with, based on what we think our friends and family will think. “If I manage to get really lean, my friends will all envy how I look and of course - I’ll be more attractive won’t I - who doesn’t want that, I’ll be so happy and life will be amazing!" I was chasing approval, not from myself, but from others.   I was hungry, tired, suffered mood swings, low sex drive, loss of strength, lack of quality sleep and all consuming food focus.   What’s worse, as I got leaner and even after I’d unveiled a full set of abs, all I could see was how I wasn’t quite at my goal yet - the progress I’d made evaded my thoughts as I critically evaluated why I couldn’t lose those last few pounds. 3 years on from the end of this diet and I’ve drastically changed how I feel about leanness…Ive stopped caring. Am I miserable and upset with how I look? The opposite. In fact, Yusef and I often discuss the last few years of our training careers as being the equivalent of enlightenment as far as fitness is concerned. Below, I will explain a little of what I’ve learned from my journey. Exaggerated impressions The obvious starting point is to examine where we all obtain this idea that being lean is desirable.    Fitness models serve as the constant reminder that society has an expectation of how we should look - an attractive ideal that we should all pursue and they’re everywhere. Obviously, in the fitness sphere itself, lean photos appear on the side bars of most websites and shredded abs smother protein tubs. But now, lean physiques can be seen in pop-media, heat magazine even have a “torso of the week” feature just to remind women (and men) that there is standard for a male’s body. Its also rare (read: never the case) that you seen a less than lean model on the cover of FHM. Of course, the degree to which this is the case depends on your social sphere - I can’t imagine the guy j...
