"There's a difference between a compilation and an album. This is an album!" In this episode, Beamin x Deno fan out over the artistry of Nigerian-British rapper, Little Simz. Her fourth album, Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, is an early 7thListen favorite for album of the year. In this offering, the fellas exchange soliloquies on their most beloved elements of the project.

Video animation by: Big Flowers Intro/Outro beat by: BLOODBLIXING Beginning of Episode (0:49). UK's Little Simz released the GREY Area back in 2019, which was a very thoughtful album. However, her perspective felt, as the title would suggest, not fully realized and fleshed out… like she was still working things out, and was more combustible as a result. Sometimes I Might Be Introvert on the other hand, sounds like someone who has gone through those mental struggles, and came out the other side. I basically see this album playing out like a coming of age story for Simz, seeing her embrace her womanhood, understanding who she is, her introversion, and being comfortable with it, and feeling herself a little bit now as a result. The thoughtful subject matter though is supported by an even more ambitious soundscape provided mainly by Sault producer, Inflo. This album is the closest to baroque rap we've gotten since Kanye West's Late Registration. Except in the presentation of this album, it's even more grand and ambitious in scope, with different styles being explored incorporating Simz's Nigerian roots. The production is so beautifully mixed, organic, and big in feel, with a really natural energy that doesn't sound forced. It's no surprise that Simz remarks in a recent NME interview, that her chemistry with Inflo is unmatched. The beats and rhymes are in lockstep, seeing Simz and Inflo perfectly working together on SIMBI. When you see Little Simz (or Simbi, as I call her) perform, she gives everything to the crowd. Off stage, she has this incredible composed energy. So, how does she find the balance? We talk about how to manage the energy you expel in your work and what to keep for yourself.   In a recent interview Simbi said, “my career is very important to me but it's not my life, I'm doing things differently this time.” And I can hands down relate to that. As I'm sure a lot of you can. Turning up in life and setting boundaries is vital for our relationship with ourselves and with others.   Born to tell stories, Little Simz has written another amazing album – Sometimes I Might Be Introvert – because of her ability to self-reflect and look at uncomfortable things. She talks about what inspires her work and the responsibility she feels as a young, Black British artist and woman.   I loved having this conversation. An album centred around someone's introversion is the unlikeliest of themes for a hip hop release. Yet, with her fourth album, the UK rapper Little Simz has turned those deepest personal thoughts into one of the most exciting and outward looking albums of the year. Following on from her Ivor Novello winning Grey Area, Little Simz worked closely again with producer Inflo to capture everything from pulsing hip hop beats through to classic Motown as well as grand orchestral arrangements. It all has a widescreen feel, yet lyrically Little Simz focused on her natural introversion to project her thoughts on life, struggle and survival. Running through highlights off the album, Little Simz speaks here to Richard Kingsmill about the ingredients that make up Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, why she used actor Emma Corrin through the record, and how she wrote about subjects like her estranged father this time round.
