In his 2017 book, “Before Babylon, Beyond Bitcoin”, David Birch predicted that we would all live in a world of multiple competing currencies. And communities, said Birch, would be one of the five main future issuers of money (along with four other “Cs”—central banks, commercial banks, cryptographic protocols like bitcoin, and companies). But community currencies have so far struggled to get off the ground. In the UK, attempts to launch a local version of the pound in Brixton, Bristol and elsewhere have failed.Bristol's subsequent idea to launch a new app called Bristol Pay, which would reward community initiatives, is stuck at the funding stage. But there are still plenty of attempts to build local money systems from the ground up. In the latest New Money Review podcast, California-based non-profit and social entrepreneur David Anderson talks about community currencies.Anderson is president and lead volunteer at Simbi, a California-based non-profit focused on community and individual development. Simbi provides a web-based community platform to help non-profit projects find and reward volunteers. It aims to promote community development, mutual aid among those in need and the development of individual skills. In the podcast, we discuss:Why local currencies are nothing to do with cryptoWhy community currencies need incentives to workSeparating incentives from speculationThe Simbi community currency modelCommunity development and non-profit modelsCan community money compete with state, bank and bigtech money?

I'm always on the hunt for new and exciting ways to help my students become successful readers (I bet you are too!)  Luckily when it comes to literacy, there are a lot of different approaches you can take. And on today's episode, I'd love to share one more with you- a platform called Simbi.  Simbi is an online platform that offers a variety of interactive content specifically designed to help children learn to read. With Simbi, your child will have access to stories, games, and activities that's intended to keep them engaged and excited about learning. Here are a few highlights:  -Simbi is developed in collaboration with literacy experts and reading teachers from around the world. -Simbi's methods – Reading Along, Narrating, TellMe and more – are proven to improve reading comprehension, fluency, and memory. -It helps motivate both avid and struggling readers to improve their own proficiency, and to help others do the same!   One of the things I love most though is this company's pledge to foster lifelong reading habits while creating global impact. Here's how they do it:  On Simbi's unique Read for Good platform, learners give back by sharing their voices to help others. Topics such as social-emotional, social justice, resilience and global citizenship are introduced. Children are able to explore diverse content from top publishers, always free of ads, and available any time of day. As students narrate books for others to hear, they earn volunteer hours automatically. Certificates can be downloaded to celebrate reading, or submit for service hours. (So cool!)   Never heard of it? Not to worry! Adrienne Gear, Canadian teacher, author and representative of Simbi is here to give us the scoop.    So if you're looking for a new and engaging way to support your child's literacy skills, check out this episode to learn more about Simbi.     Check out Simbi at https://simbi.io/   Connect with Adrienne on Instagram  @readingpowergear View Adrienne's Website: https://www.readingpowergear.com/   **Check Out this Month's Featured Workshop!** https://www.myliteracyspace.com/classes

We talk about how to manage the energy you expel in your work and what to keep for yourself.   In a recent interview Simbi said, “my career is very important to me but it's not my life, I'm doing things differently this time.” And I can hands down relate to that. As I'm sure a lot of you can. Turning up in life and setting boundaries is vital for our relationship with ourselves and with others.   Born to tell stories, Little Simz has written another amazing album – Sometimes I Might Be Introvert – because of her ability to self-reflect and look at uncomfortable things. This week I’m joined by David Anderson, a “helper of helpers” who works in the non-profit/alternative currency space. David joined me to discuss one of his main projects, Simbi, an online marketplace which promotes “volunteership, mutual aid, education and community development.”The idea is people can seek or offer aid to other users but, importantly, earn and pay in simbi credits, the non-profit’s own cryptocurrency. The aim is to relieve the pressure of having to use fiat money ($,€,£) for everything because, as David brilliantly articulates, that kind of money is becoming increasingly scarce for many people. I thoroughly enjoyed this discussion. David points out that, contrary to a lot of crypto theory out there, alternative currencies can play a very important role within existing economies. David doesn’t think simbi credits should ever replace the dollar—rather, giving people more options to earn credits for the things they need, in markets built around community, provides immediate relief and resources to populations experiencing increasing precarity. I’m sure you’ll love it. Listen directly here or catch it on Apple or Spotify.Learn more about Simbi and sign up to be a user!Platform is for people who are pissed off with capitalism.
