Justin is joined by John Michael Heath of EAP Society (youtube.com/EAPSociety) to give their first impressions of the new Sony Legacy box set, "Memphis" which released today, August 9, 2024. Marketed as "a comprehensive collection" of 111 recordings of Elvis made in his adoptive hometown from his time at Sam Phillips's Sun Records through to Chips Moman's American Sound, the iconic Stax, live at the Mid-South Coliseum and at his home, Graceland, "Memphis" is said to contain "newly mixed versions of the select recordings, pure and without overdubs" overseen by award-winning engineer Matt Ross-Spang and producer Ernst Jorgensen. Spoilers: there's good news for those who want to re-experience the 1973, 1974 and 1976 material in a different light than you may be familiar with, and a faithful collection of the Sun material... but this set's presentation of the 1969 American Sound music is a different story altogether. And that "pure and without overdubs" claim? Well, you'll hear. The guys also answer listener feedback on this episode, including several about a recent Song of the Week, but since this discussion ran long, Justin and John will be back later with a separate, full length episode for the main topic intended to supplement and compliment the "Memphis" set, focused on the history of the music industry in Memphis, how Elvis was influenced by it, and how he in turn helped reshape it.

With Geoff out after a bizarre curling incident (long story), Keith flies solo this week as he welcomes Paul Heck into Thunderlove Studio for a chat. Paul Heck created the AIDS Music Project to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and normalize discussing safe sex. In this endeavor, Heck pursued the idea of an AIDS-benefit alternative rock compilation. He partnered with fellow Brown alumni Chris Mundy (a Rolling Stone senior writer) and Jessica Kowal (a freelance writer for Newsday) to produce the album No Alternative, the third album in the Red Hot Organization's (RHO) AIDS Benefit Music series. No Alternative, released on Arista Records in October 1993. The album received an A+ review in Entertainment Weekly and was described by Rolling Stone as "a jaw-dropping compilation of musical gems." A No Alternative MTV special featured a mix of live performances by Smashing Pumpkins and Goo Goo Dolls, music videos, short films by directors Hal Hartley, Tamra Davis, Michael Stipe, Jim McKay, and Matt Mahurin. No Alternative raised over $1.5 million, and the proceeds were donated to AIDS relief organizations across the US. Following No Alternative's commercial and critical success, Heck has produced other HIV/AIDS awareness-raising albums and a series of concerts at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Heck's subsequent productions include: Red Hot + Bothered Offbeat Red Hot + RIO Red Hot + Rhapsody Red Hot + Indigo Red Hot + RIOT Red Hot + RIO2 Red Hot + FELA Master Mix: Red Hot + Arthur Russell In 2004, Heck was honored by Brown University as the recipient of the John Hope Award for Career Public Service. Paul co-produced Dark Was The Night (2009), an AIDS benefit album that raised over $1 million and featured artists like The National, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, My Morning Jacket, and Jose Gonzalez. In 2013 Heck produced a 20th Anniversary reissue of No Alternative on vinyl (Sony Legacy) for Record Store Day. In 2019 Heck produced Love is the Drug, a campaign in N. Carolina featuring live music pop-up events with video storytelling focused on raising awareness around Harm Reduction and Opioid Addiction. In 2020 Heck invited another Brown alum, fine artist Keith Mayerson, to create a portrait of Dr. Anthony Fauci as a part of a limited art edition fundraiser for Treatment Action Group (TAG). Heck worked as an A&R for Arista Records and Warner Bros. Records in the mid-1990s. Paul has produced the compilation albums: Shuggie Otis Inspiration Information (Luaka Bop, 2002) Fela Kuti The Underground Spiritual Game Mix (with Chief Xcel of Blackalicous - Quannum Projects, 2004) Tim Maia Nobody Can Live Forever: The Existential soul of Tim Maia (Luaka Bop, 2011) In The Name of Love: Africa Celebrates U2 a project featuring African artists reinterpreting the songs of U2 (Shout! From its misleading title to its meme-status cover, for all our joking about 1972's Elvis Now, it's time to put our money where our mouths are and actually see if the music itself is as misguided as the cover that contains it would seem to imply! For Song of the Week, Gurdip realizes that the 1963 "Return to Sender" sequel song, "Western Union," still sounds good despite being an outdated culture reference. Then, Justin returns to 1971 right away to give some love to the overlooked Nashville cut "Love Me, Love the Life I Lead," its genuinely great songwriting pedigree, and Elvis's raw delivery, long hampered by a muddled mix and melodramatic overdubs. "Elvis Now" is available to buy and stream on all major music platforms. We also strongly recommend the Sony Legacy box sets "From Elvis in Nashville" and "Back in Nashville." Justin is joined this week by special guest co-host Bec Wyles! They talk a little bit about her history and perspective as an international Elvis fan, then jump right into the deep end with a look back at the Nashville 1971 sessions, as featured in the recently released "Back in Nashville" set by Sony Legacy. (We STRONGLY recommend picking up or listening to this collection on your platform of choice!) These sessions resulted in Elvis's Grammy-award winning "He Touched Me" album, the perennial holiday favorite "The Wonderful World of Christmas," a substantial portion of the 1973 album "Elvis," and a number of singles. In context, the sessions also reveal Elvis hard at work on a folk/country album concept that never quite materialized. Then, for Song of the Week, Bec dips back in the previous Nashville sessions from 1970 with Dallas Frazier & Doodle Owens's sweeping country belter "Where Did They Go, Lord?" Justin, with some pep and a double step, goes all in on "Plantation Rock," the infamous song deleted from 1962's "Girls! Girls! Girls!" - but is there more nuance to be uncovered behind its history than expected at face value? Let us know what you think of Bec on the show! A MINOR CORRECTION: "Plantation Rock" was first officially released on A Legendary Performer, Volume 4 in 1983. Thanks to Gurdip and Tony Plews for this correction. Due to a family emergency, Justin is out this week, so this episode brings you a collection of previous Songs of the Week, comprising almost two hours of dedicated Elvis song history, including: I'll Remember You, Runaway, I Don't Want To Be Tied, Inherit the Wind, Santa Bring My Baby Back to Me, Promised Land, Let It Be Me and I Need You So. The guys will be back next week as usual but don't forget - Sony Legacy's 1971 set Back in Nashville drops this Friday, November 12, at retail and on digital distribution services! Expect reactions from us next week on the show and over the weekend on social media.
Welcome to Episode #98 of the Blue-in-Green:PODCAST which sees Imran and Rhonda dive into the latest project from The Purple Majesty himself 'Welcome 2 America'. Amongst the swathe of P releases to see the light of day since his passing, 'Welcome 2 America' holds the distinction of being the first full-length album to be released as originally intended. Shelved by the artist himself, inexplicably, for 11 years, Sony/Legacy bring the project to peoples' attention. Hailed for its sometimes harsh assessment of contemporary America, the thoughts and views expressed throughout are just as relevant today as they were 11 years ago. Join in the conversation to hear us discuss why we love the album as much as we do, why we feel the posthumous releases have just nailed it every time and what we'd love to see tackled by the Estate next. Also, this conversation took place in September - it was supposed to take place in August but Rhonda was unavailable due to plans to see Vanilla Ice in concert so you definitely want to hear her explanation for that comment if nothing else :) www.blueingreenradio.com TuneIn: bit.ly/2LBK0BD The Blue-in-Green:PODCAST unveils new episodes on the first, second and third Mondays of the month. Mento Buru from East Bakersfield, California has played around California's Central Valley since the early 1990s. Bandleader Matt Munoz explains how they, like many bands, have made a living and endured as a regional act. Last Christmas, Mento Buru released the East Bakersfield Christmas EP, which features Christmas classics adapted to suit the band's Latin ska sound. Munoz talks about how and why they made it, along with the two Spanish-language Christmas songs--"Donde Esta Santa Claus" by Augie Rios, and "Feliz Navidad" by Jose Feliciano. We discussed his fascination with Augie Rios in an earlier episode, but this time we talk about where he found the Spanish lyrics for the song that was written in English. Along the way, Munoz shares some of his holiday favorites, including songs by the Ramsey Lewis Trio, Cheech and Chong, and Alexander O'Neal. This week's episode also pays some attention to Earth, Wind & Fire's 2014 Christmas album, Holiday, and the 2015 Sony Legacy repackaging of it with a few extra tracks as The Classic Christmas Album. I'm fascinated by it because the band doesn't simply lend its grooves to Christmas favorites. On a number of the tracks, it either adds seasonal lyrics to pre-existing EWF songs, or it reuses familiar horn flourishes and signature parts to make their versions explicitly theirs. If you haven't already done so, please follow or subscribe to 12 Songs wherever you get your podcasts. If you listen via Apple, a five-star review would be much appreciated.
While catching up with the hot new Sony Legacy release "From Elvis in Nashville," Justin & Gurdip are inspired to take a look at the first album comprised of material from those June 1970 sessions: That's The Way It Is. Blending live and studio cuts and bearing perhaps the most prominent influence of the 70s adult contemporary style (reflecting artists like BJ Thomas and Tom Jones), does the not-so-soundtrack album accompanying the documentary film stand on its own 50 years out from its original release? Where does it sit within Elvis' greater discography? And are there still new insights to glean from the songs? All this and more in this week's TCBCast, plus Gurdip rings in the holiday season with "Here Comes Santa Claus" while Justin wraps up his tale of a 1962 movie cut with a "Happy Ending." If you haven't done so yet, we highly recommend picking up or streaming on an official platform of your choice the new compilation set "From Elvis in Nashville." https://www.amazon.com/Elvis-Nashville-Presley/dp/B08928MGYK
Can You Hear It? I Know You Caught The Spirit This week, Josh and Tracy are taking you to church. They hear about the deep, poetic roots of Gospel in Black identity from writer and professor Ashon Crawley. The Opus completes its journey with the late Jeff Buckley. Jeff Buckley hasn't been alive for 22 years, and yet, he has consistently put out "new" music. Fans can thank Mary Guibert for that. She's head executive of Buckley's estate — and also his mother. Stepping in quickly after his untimely death, she's kept Buckley's voice and vision alive all these years. It's not an easy job — after all, she had to convince seasoned label heads to take her seriously, compartmentalize her grief as a mother to act as an executive, and choose what things are shared with the world and what stays private. In the season three finale of The Opus, host Carrie Courogen is joined by Guibert, as well as Rolling Stone critic David Browne, to discuss their roles, together and individually, in doing the delicate and difficult work of keeping Buckley's legacy alive. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Grace, Jeff Buckley’s proper studio catalogue will be re-released and packaged with rare recordings and bonus international material. The sets drop on August 23rd via Columbia and Sony Legacy.
The Opus continues its season surrounding the late Jeff Buckley. Posthumous fame and legacy have been contentious subjects for decades. An early or sudden death, as in Buckley's case, can sometimes create a mythology around the artist that leaves audiences with difficult questions to ask: How do we listen to Grace — Buckley’s only finished studio album — differently with the knowledge of his death? How do we ethically proceed with lingering unfinished material in the aftermath of such a tragedy? And do posthumous releases help us understand an artist more, or do they lend to the mythology? While Buckley the person is no longer alive, through his art, his voice continues to flourish and inspire. Host Carrie Courogen is joined by critics Daphne A. Brooks, David Browne, Annie Zaleski, and musician Warren Zanes to talk about how Buckley’s tragic death, and everything that came after, casts a long shadow over the way we listen to Grace today. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Grace, Jeff Buckley’s proper studio catalogue will be re-released and packaged with rare recordings and bonus international material. The sets drop on August 23rd via Columbia and Sony Legacy.
In a relatively short amount of time, Matt Ross-Spang has grown from Sun Studio tour guide to one of the most sought-after producers and engineers in music. Having moonlighted behind the boards at Sun after business hours while juggling high-school, Matt helped bring the historic studio back to its analog roots and eventually stepped out on his own at the behest of Grammy-winner and Nashville studio staple Dave Cobb. This led to Matt engineering releases for John Prine, Jason Isbell, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Amanda Shires and Josh Ritter, as well as helming records for Margo Price, Lucero and Iron & Wine's latest collaboration with Calexico. Recently, Amazon even plucked him to produce, curate and debut a unique digital audio series featuring Al Green's first new recording in nearly a decade. To sum it up best, NPR describes Ross-Spang as "a music history geek with a brilliant ear for blending studio precision with spontaneity," while Rolling Stone touts him as "one of the most trusted arbiters of the Memphis sound." That last moniker rings especially true this month, as Sony/Legacy celebrates the 50th anniversary of one of Elvis Presley's most pivotal years by releasing a massive 11CD box set and 2LP vinyl edition of performances from August 1969 at the International Hotel in Las Vegas. All originally recorded to 8-track and newly mixed to analog by Matt, this string of shows is especially notable for featuring a full orchestra and the live debut of one of the King's biggest hits, "Suspicious Minds." Recorded at Sam Phillips' iconic studio in Memphis, today's interview features Matt's insight on the psychology of recording, examples of records where the room acts as an instrument, his trajectory within the industry and how a career in documenting music has changed the way he listens. Matt's social media and additional information on his work can be found at southerngrooves.com. To learn more about Sam Phillips Recording Service, visit samphillipsrecording.com.

MUDDY WATERS is an American Icon. The whole story of the blues can be heard, felt, and learned in his life. Country blues were Muddys roots and remained at his core, but through the force of his artistry he transformed them. With electricity, volume, the weaving of bass and guitar lines with piano, harmonica and drums, he created the ensemble sound and subsequently the template for future Rock and Pop groups including the Beatles and The Rolling Stones. His musics raw power and energy, plus his attitude and magnetismMuddy was the prototype for the iconic Rockn Roll starare still the major ingredients that inspire the popular music we listen to today. MUDDY WATERS?100 is a tribute album to Muddys music and legacy on the occasion of his 100th birthday. Produced by Grammy-nominated producer Larry Skoller, the album includes 15 newly recorded tracks featuring Muddy Waters Band alumni and many of todays most preeminent American blues and roots artists This WoodSongs Special Event Broadcast will be celebrating the music and legacy of Muddy Waters and feature two of the artists on this historic Grammy nominated release plus another legendary blues musician. Performing on this broadcast: JOHN PRIMER is recognized as one of todays most crucial keepers of the Chicago blues flame. He broke through playing with the great Willie Dixon, spent more than a decade alongside Magic Slim, and has released 15 albums of his own. In between Willie Dixon and Magic Slim, though, was the event that changed his life. Muddy Waters asked John to join his band, a gig which John faithfully remained with until Muddys death in 1983. John has since then felt a genuine responsibility to carry on Muddys legacyMuddys sound, his songs and his spirita responsibility that John takes very seriously. In fact, John handles most of the lead vocals and guitar playing on Muddy Waters 100. BOB MARGOLIN is a multi-award winning guitar player/songwriter/singer/producer. Inspired by Chuck Berry, he started playing guitar at age 15 and immediately started performing in local rock and blues bands. Margolin was hired by Muddy Waters in 1973 and toured the world and jammed with many great blues and rock musicians, “but the biggest thrill was playing Muddys Blues with him. Muddy brought Margolin with him to special shows and recordings including the Grammy Award-winning Muddy Waters Woodstock Album and The Bands Last Waltz concert. Since leaving Muddys band in 1980, Margolin started his own band, won several BMAs, produced albums for numerous artists including Muddys son Big Bill Morganfield, played on several Grammy-winning records, began a second career as a music writer, and produced and consulted on reissues of Muddy Waters recordings for the Blue Sky Label for Sony/Legacy. His latest solo release is My Road and appears as a special guest on Muddy Waters 100. PAUL OSCHER is an award-winning blues singer, songwriter, recording artist, and multi-instrumentalist, (harmonica, guitar, piano, melodica, and bass harp). Over an astounding career in which she has sung all styles of popular music as leader and as support singer, Merry Clayton is vocal royalty. Among the legends Clayton has supported are Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones, Quincy Jones, Etta James, Barbara Streisand, Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, Bobby Womack, Art Garfunkel, Tina Turner, Tom Jones, Diana Ross, Leon Russell, The Jazz Crusaders and Elvis Presley. From Hollywood to Broadway and around the world, Merry brings audiences and peers to their feet. In 2013, her amazing life story is covered in the award-winning background singers’ documentary, 20 FEET FROM STARDOM. This encore in the spotlight coincides with the long-overdue release of Sony Legacy’s THE BEST OF MERRY CLAYTON, celebrating her golden years on Ode Records. After growing up in the church in New Orleans and Los Angeles, her first pop recording was a duet with Bobby Darin in the early '60s. Merry became featured singer with Ray Charles’ girl group The Raelets in the mid-'60s, appeared on several of Joe Cocker’s releases including album WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS and single “Feelin’ Alright,” on Lynyrd Skynyrd’s anthem “Sweet Home Alabama,” and originated the role of “Acid Queen” on the inaugural recording of the rock opera TOMMY with The Who & the London Symphony Orchestra. Dave Getz is the drummer for one of the most important bands of the Sixties’ San Francisco music scene, Big Brother and the Holding Company. Their album, Cheap Thrills, recorded with Janis Joplin, stands as one of the finest examples of psychedelic rock, and still sounds fresh today. Sony / Legacy has just issued Live at the Carousel Ballroom 1968, a vintage recording of the classic lineup, just a couple of months before their breakup. The disc features ferocious performances, and is testament that Big Brother was a lot more than simply Joplin’s backup band. In addition, Dave’s other group, the Dave Getz Breakaway, have a new album out featuring an unreleased song that Getz co-wrote with Janis.
The Stranger was Billy Joel's fifth album, but in some ways, it felt like his debut because it's the album that catapulted him to superstardom. Before its release, he'd had a radio hit with "Piano Man," but his genius was hampered by a string of overly slick producers who didn't connect with his musical vision. But all that started to change leading up to The Stranger. With no hits to his name, his own wife as a manager, and a refusal to work with big-name producers, Joel finally had a chance to make an album on his own terms. Then came a performance at Carnegie Hall, and soon after, a meeting with Phil Ramone, the producer that finally understood what Billy was trying to do. With Joel's insistence on bringing his touring band into the studio and Ramone on his side, The Stranger finally began falling into place. On Episode 1 of The Opus: Billy Joel's the Stranger, host Adam Unze takes a look at the groundwork for what was to come, going through the history of Billy Joel's first four records to his landmark performances at Carnegie Hall, meeting Phil Ramone, and finally finding a recording process that gave him creative freedom and the ability to capture the magic of his live band. The Stranger wasn't only Billy Joel's critical breakthrough, but it was the start of a decade-long creative partnership with producer Phil Ramone. Together, the two created some of the most lasting songs in music, and it all began with those first sessions in the summer of 1977.Joel had a specific vision for what would be his fifth studio album, and that meant finding the right person to work the boards. It wasn't until Ramone -- known then for hits like "It's My Party" in the '60s and working with Paul Simon in the '70s -- expressed his enthusiasm for working with Joel's touring band that the Piano Man knew he'd found his producer.Together, they captured the energy of a Billy Joel concert on tape, with Joel's band pounding away live in studio (leading to utterly in-the-room sound leakage). Add in Ramone's innovative recording techniques, and they were able to fully realize the sound that had always been in Joel's head. It was a collaborative environment that allowed the best of everyone to come out and led to one of the best albums in the history of music.Presented by Consequence Podcast Network and Sony Legacy, Episode 2 of The Opus: The Stranger explores how working with Ramone allowed Joel to ascend to a new level of legend. In addition to archival interviews from the two icons, host Adam Unze speaks with Ben Folds, Joel's drummer Liberty DeVito, Arkells' Max Kerman, Andrew McMahon and the Wilderness, and Rozzie.Keep up with the rest of Season 19 by liking, reviewing, and subscribing to The Opus wherever you get your podcasts.
