One of the greatest compilations of its time (the greatest time for compilations), No Alternative was the third in the Red Hot series benefiting AIDS relief. The line up is studded with iconic artists, many on the precipice of their biggest records, from Soundgarden to Sarah McLachlan, and also features influential alternative greats like Buffalo Tom, The Verlaines, and Soul Asylum. It even spawned an MTV special with live performances from Smashing Pumpkins and Goo Goo Dolls, plus short films by the likes of Tamra Davis, Hal Hartley, and Derek Jarman. Plus, the biggest rock band in the world at the time contributed an uncredited song that even without proper listing became a huge part of the comp's hype. We used to be a proper country indeed. We're taking a closer look at the maniacal whimsy of Adam Sandler's breakthrough film Billy Madison. It launched a billion dollar career, but is it nonsensical gibberish, clever satire, or an excuse to watch kids get hit by dodgeballs? Yes.   Billy Madison Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2Q40rXJuMU&ab_channel=RottenTomatoesClassicTrailers Billy Madison is a 1995 American comedy film directed by Tamra Davis. It stars Adam Sandler in the title role, Bradley Whitford, Bridgette Wilson, Norm Macdonald, Darren McGavin, Mark Beltzman, and Larry Hankin. The film was written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy and produced by Robert Simonds, and was Macdonald's feature film debut. It made over $26.4 million worldwide and debuted at number one at the box office. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics at the time of its release, the film is now considered one of Sandler's best and has garnered a cult following over the years. What a pleasure to sit down and chat with the effervescent Tamra Davis. Tamra was the director of the MMMBop and Where's the Love video clips. These videos were one of the main, if the not, THE main parts of our Hanson 1997 era. It was through these videos that we were able to connect with Hanson, to visually see them and.....well pause our VHS's and stare. Tamra began her career directing music videos for acts like Tone Loc, Depeche Mode, Indigo Girls, NWA, Hanson and Sonic Youth and made her first feature in 92 with Guncrazy starring Drew Barrymore. Ms Barrymore received a Golden Globe Nomination. She then went on to direct feature films starring Chris Rock-CB4, Adam Sandler in Billy Madison, Dave Chappelle in Half Baked, Britney Spears in Crossroads and most recently, 13: The Musical for Netflix. She is also known for her documentary work on Jean Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child and The Punk Singer about Kathleen Hanna. After having 2 kids with her husband Mike D of the Beastie Boys she started a career in Television has directed on shows such as Grey's Anatomy, Dead To Me, The Politician and P Valley. She directed the pilot for High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. She continues to work in documentaries, episodic television and feature films. You can find Tamra on Instagram @tamradavis1

Without a doubt, you've seen Tamra's work. She is the director of so many iconic music videos and movies over the years. She's directed actors like Chris Rock, Phil Hartman, Dave Chappelle, Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler and music videos for The Smiths, Faith No More, MC Lyte, Young MC, Tone Loc, Hanson, and thats just barely scratching the surface! We talk about growing up with a comedy writer grandfather, who wrote jokes for everyone, quite literally. She went on to create a new style of music videos that were raw and felt “home made” at a time when they were heavily produced polished. Not only is this episode fun, it's also very educational for filmmakers, artists and everyone!

Parenthood is a crazy beautiful ride. There are ups and downs that so many of us experience. Josh and Paige Peck can relate! I had the privilege of having a quick sit-down chat with them the other day about their parenthood journey thus far — what they've experienced as parents and what has helped them along the way. Listening to their stories and advice was refreshing to hear because even as celebrities, they have experienced a lot of what other parents are dealing with too. I know that parents who listen to this episode will be able to take away something from what we discussed and feel a little less alone too. Who are Josh & Paige Peck? Josh Peck is a father, actor, writer, author, and podcast host. He can currently be seen in the second season of Hulu's, How I Met Your Father, alongside Hilary Duff and in the Netflix feature film, 13: The Musical, as "Rabbi Shapiro" for director Tamra Davis, alongside Debra Messing. He starred in the Disney+ reboot of Turner & Hooch, playing the son of the beloved role that Tom Hanks originated. And Josh will next be seen in Christopher Nolan's upcoming feature, Oppenheimer, alongside Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, and Robert Downey Jr. Oppenheimer will release in theaters on July 21, 2023. Paige Peck is a designer who lovingly cares for their two sons, Max and Shai. The Pecks currently reside in Los Angeles, CA. What are we chatting about? Josh and Paige recently welcomed their second baby home in October 2022 and we are chatting about all things parenting! From transitioning from one to two children, balancing careers, their advice for new parents, and more, they share their experiences with us. We are grateful to hear about their journey as parents and what they have learned along the way.

With Geoff out after a bizarre curling incident (long story), Keith flies solo this week as he welcomes Paul Heck into Thunderlove Studio for a chat. Paul Heck created the AIDS Music Project to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and normalize discussing safe sex. In this endeavor, Heck pursued the idea of an AIDS-benefit alternative rock compilation. He partnered with fellow Brown alumni Chris Mundy (a Rolling Stone senior writer) and Jessica Kowal (a freelance writer for Newsday) to produce the album No Alternative, the third album in the Red Hot Organization's (RHO) AIDS Benefit Music series. No Alternative, released on Arista Records in October 1993. The album received an A+ review in Entertainment Weekly and was described by Rolling Stone as "a jaw-dropping compilation of musical gems." A No Alternative MTV special featured a mix of live performances by Smashing Pumpkins and Goo Goo Dolls, music videos, short films by directors Hal Hartley, Tamra Davis, Michael Stipe, Jim McKay, and Matt Mahurin. No Alternative raised over $1.5 million, and the proceeds were donated to AIDS relief organizations across the US. Following No Alternative's commercial and critical success, Heck has produced other HIV/AIDS awareness-raising albums and a series of concerts at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Heck's subsequent productions include: Red Hot + Bothered Offbeat Red Hot + RIO Red Hot + Rhapsody Red Hot + Indigo Red Hot + RIOT Red Hot + RIO2 Red Hot + FELA Master Mix: Red Hot + Arthur Russell In 2004, Heck was honored by Brown University as the recipient of the John Hope Award for Career Public Service. Paul co-produced Dark Was The Night (2009), an AIDS benefit album that raised over $1 million and featured artists like The National, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, My Morning Jacket, and Jose Gonzalez. In 2013 Heck produced a 20th Anniversary reissue of No Alternative on vinyl (Sony Legacy) for Record Store Day. In 2019 Heck produced Love is the Drug, a campaign in N. Carolina featuring live music pop-up events with video storytelling focused on raising awareness around Harm Reduction and Opioid Addiction.  In 2020 Heck invited another Brown alum, fine artist Keith Mayerson, to create a portrait of Dr. Anthony Fauci as a part of a limited art edition fundraiser for Treatment Action Group (TAG). Heck worked as an A&R for Arista Records and Warner Bros. Records in the mid-1990s. Paul has produced the compilation albums: Shuggie Otis Inspiration Information (Luaka Bop, 2002) Fela Kuti The Underground Spiritual Game Mix (with Chief Xcel of Blackalicous - Quannum Projects, 2004) Tim Maia Nobody Can Live Forever: The Existential soul of Tim Maia (Luaka Bop, 2011) In The Name of Love: Africa Celebrates U2 a project featuring African artists reinterpreting the songs of U2 (Shout! Tamra Davis came on as director for Billy Madison after they'd already been filming for a few days of production as the studio felt the original director wasn't funny enough. Davis had already met with Sandler and they connected. Plus, it helped that she found him funny. Because of this, she ended up in the director's seat, taking over the project and delivering a film that, like it or not, has given Sandler a solid home in mid-budget comedy production. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up our 90s Comedies series and our 11th season with Davis' 1995 comedy Billy Madison. Adam Sandler – Love Him or Hate Him This is a tough film for us to review. Neither of us are fans of Sandler's juvenile comedy, so we really struggled to review this in a way that appeals to his fans. What we did try to do, though, is to maintain a critical eye without being overly judgmental, knowing that we're just not the audience for this movie. It's a tough place for us, as we both certainly love crass and dumb comedies. We're both big fans of Dumb and Dumber. So why is this film so much more difficult to like? There's a certain element that definitely falls on Sandler's shoulders. His dumb title character just makes little sense to us. In context of the film's world, why does he want to run his dad's company? Is it just to keep Eric from it? Even Billy seems to acknowledge he doesn't know how to do it. With that, the story ends up feeling like a lot more sketches that don't tie together cohesively than anything else. That's a big frustration for us. We're also not huge fans of how some of the characters are treated or portrayed. Miss Vaughn isn't treated well and is written to fall for Billy far too quickly. And what are Sandler and co-writer Tim Herlihy saying about their other female characters, not to mention the gay school principal? There are funny moments, but rarely do they fall to Billy. For a film about Billy, this makes it very hard for us. Regardless, we do work to not completely bag on this movie but to approach it with some serious thought. Many love it, and for that, we're happy they have this, Sandler's comedy, and his film productions. So check it out if you want. Either way, it's a great conversation. Tune in to check it out. Summer is here and that means things are gonna wind down around here at the blog for the month of July, but I had one more round-up of Blu-rays to bring the people while we try and get some rest before the pandemonium of August brings us out of our sleep. This month, we're rollin' with Kino and Criterion to bring you an underseen “cops and robbers” film from across the pond with Basil Dearden's The Blue Lamp, while Criterion's on a welcomely humanist kick in June with their releasing of the seminal Seattle-set documentary about unhoused and abused youth Streetwise and its follow-up, Tiny: The Life of Erin Blackwell. Criterion has also finally brought Masaki Kobayashi's towering achievement, The Human Condition, to Blu-ray (about time!). We then wrap things up with some comedy double features in the form of Tamra Davis's cable staples CB4 and Half Baked and I talk about a couple of Mae West comedies with my *tries to think of something nice to say* great editor, Michaela Owens! We chat about My Little Chickadee and She Done Him Wrong, and get into what makes Mae West and her leading men so interesting. You can find more great writing on the IU Cinema Blog here

Optimize Yourself

"We want to promote health and wellbeing to editors because they work so hard." - Kevin Tent As the recently elected President of American Cinema Editors (ACE), Kevin Tent is leading the charge to make working smarter instead of harder in the edit bay one of his top priorities. He's dedicated to making changes like taking regular walk breaks, adding in meditation, and even taking an occasional nap (the horror!!!!) to enhance your creativity and get you through the day with more energy left over for your family and yourself when work is done. Kevin describes himself as a "somewhat professional film editor who has worked in Hollywood for nearly 30 years,” who is best known for his collaboration with director Alexander Payne having edited films like Citizen Ruth, Election, About Schmidt, Sideways, Nebraska, Blow, and Girl Interrupted. He has learned the value of taking care of his body and mind while trying to balance the demanding schedules of Hollywood feature films. In our conversation, Kevin and I talk candidly about the habits he's implemented for better health and creativity while editing (many of which came about from learning the hard way from years of neglect). He also clears up the confusion about the American Cinema Editors organization and details how someone can qualify and become a member. And most importantly he speaks honestly about the value of becoming an ACE member and the benefits that doing so can have on your well-being and career (Hint: It's not to boost your career or find more jobs). If you want to know how one of the top names in the feature editing game stays sharp and continues to work at such a high level, today’s conversation is for you. Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: Kevin's origin story of how he got started editing. How ten years of editing for Roger Corman made him an "overnight success" after the success of Election. The steps he took to avoid getting pigeonholed. Kevin wants to use ACE to promote healthy lifestyles in post production. KEY TAKEAWAY: Exercise and meditation habits stick when it is something you want to do rather than something you have to do. His morning bike ride often gets him out of creative blocks in scenes. Afternoon walks with Alexander Payne are creatively beneficial for both of them while working on a movie. Kevin uses naps to give him a renewed sense of energy. KEY TAKEAWAY: All the best ideas happen when you're away from the computer. He wants to influence people to understand it is healthy to take walks and breaks during your day. The political instigator that got Kevin to start a meditation practice. The types of meditation he's tried and the benefits he's gained from a regular practice. The myriad of soft skills necessary for an editor to have and how meditation compliments these skills. Why editors are so undervalued and not treated as the integral creatives that they are. Director Alexander Payne has a deep respect for editors on his films. Being invisible artists makes it hard to get the credit we deserve. Kevin describes what ACE is, the history of how it began, and how you can join. Best advice for anyone who wants to edit big feature films like Kevin. [optin-monster slug="u1u6n4yv97rxxz4icynf"] Guest Bio: Kevin Tent (ACE) has been a somewhat professional film editor in Hollywood for nearly 30 years. He is best known for his long time collaboration with director Alexander Payne. Their first collaboration was on Payne’s Sundance hit “Citizen Ruth,” starring Laura Dern. Followed by the critical hit “Election” staring Reese Witherspoon (for which Tent earned his first American Cinema Editor’s nomination). Tent received his second ACE nomination for “About Schmidt” starring Jack Nicholson and his third for “Sideways” starring Thomas Haden Church & Paul Giamati. In 2011 Tent was nominated for both an ACE and an Academy Award® for his editing on “The Descendants”, starring George Clooney. He won the Eddie for best dramatic film of 2011. He was also nominated for an ACE award for his work on “Nebraska” in 2014 and worked with Payne on his most recent film “Downsizing” staring Matt Damon. After attending Los Angeles City College’s film school, Tent got his first break working for legendary B-movie producer Roger Corman cutting classic films like “Emmanuelle 5” and “Not of This Earth”. While continuing to hone his skills in the throws of B-movies, Tent also tapped into the emerging Independent film movement in the US. Cutting the underground hit “Guncrazy” directed by Tamra Davis and the above mentioned “Citizen Ruth” by Payne. Some of Tent’s other credits include “Blow” the late Ted Demme’s drug epic staring Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz. James Mangold’s “Girl Interrupted” staring Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie, (Jolie winning an academy award for her performance). “Disconnect” directed by Henry Alex Rubin, “Welcome To Me” starring Kristin Wigg and “Parched” a foreign language film by Indian director Leena Yadav. More recently Tent’s credits include “Otherhood” from director Cindy Chupack & producer Cathy Schulman and “The Peanut Butter Falcon” staring Shia LaBeouf and Zack Gottsagen. Tent has worked with director Barry Sonnenfeld numerous times, Nancy Meyers on the “The Intern” and Martin Scorsese on his short film “The Audition”. In this podcast made in collaboration with Phillips, Scott Nussbaum, head of 20th Century and Contemporary Art at Phillips, New York and Fred Hoffman, curator of a seminal Basquiat retrospective and author of The Art of Jean-Michel Basquiat, talk about Matt Dike's relationship to the artist, their work together in Los Angeles in the 1980s, their friendship around music and the gifts of art Basquiat made to Dike. Chief among those gifts was the self portrait painted on two doors and a panel that will be sold during Phillips May 16th Evening sale in New York. Moved directly from Basquiat's studio to Dike's home, the work is a rare example of Basquiat's art never to have been sold before, as Fred Hoffman explains in his catalogue essay for Phillips: "As one of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s most compelling depictions of himself, Self Portrait, 1983 presents a metaphysical subject on two related panels. The full-length representation of the artist is juxtaposed with an adjacent panel portraying both his personal incantation, “To Repel Ghosts”, and his characterization of the passage from the material to the eternal. Self Portrait is unique, having been executed on two found doors, one which also includes an attached plywood panel. This singular painting was executed in Venice, California sometime in 1983 at New City Editions, the print studio where Basquiat produced his now acclaimed silkscreen works, Tuxedo, 1983, Untitled, 1983 and Back of the Neck, 1983. The creation of this painting is recorded in filmmaker Tamra Davis’ acclaimed documentary, The Radiant Child, possibly the only extant film documentation of Basquiat working on a painting. As conveyed to the author by Tamra Davis, after having completed the work, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Tamra Davis moved the work to the studio of Matt Dike in West Hollywood. The work is also documented in Tamra Davis’ 1988 promotional video for Matt Dike’s record label Delicious Vinyl, in which Matt Dike and his business partner Mike Ross are filmed sitting on a couch with Self Portrait in the background."

Fresh out of art school in the early 80's, Tamra Davis turned her video camera toward her friends and ended up one of the most influential music video directors of all-time. Her early work with Tone Loc, Young MC, MC Lyte and Eazy-E set the standard for low budget rap videos. She also did groundbreaking work for bands Sonic Youth, The Lemonheads and Hanson ("MMMBop" and "Where's The Love.") She was also the first person to put a camera in Spike Jonze's hand (in Sonic Youth's "100%.") In addition to her music video work, Tamra Davis is the director you call when a comedian is about to break out. She directed Chris Rock in CB4, Adam Sandler in Billy Madison and Dave Chapelle in Half Baked. She also directed Britney Spears' movie Crossroads. Tamra now works as a TV director and directed the documentary Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child. She invited Videohead to her home in Malibu where we discussed her career and her time working with Cher, Lou Reed, the New Kids on the Block and Bette Midler. Thank you for listening.
