Mad Max meets Star Wars? This has to be at least decent, right?
In the early 80s, a short lived wave of 3D movies made a splash on theater screens and home video. We discuss the entire history of 3D cinema as well as the films Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone, Jaws 3D, and Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn. Today on The Neil Haley show, Neil Haley interviews Ernie Hudson. As a child growing up in Benton Harbor, Michigan, Ernie Hudson wrote short stories, poems and songs, always thinking that his words might one day come to life on stage. After a short stint in the Marine Corps, he moved to Detroit where he became the resident playwright at Concept East, the oldest black theatre in the country. In addition, he enrolled at Wayne State University to further develop his writing and acting skills and found time to establish the Actors' Emsemble Theatre, where he and other talented young black writers directed and appeared in their own works. After graduating with a B.A. from Wayne State, he was rewarded a full scholarship to the M.F.A. program at the prestigious Yale School of Drama. While performing with the school's repertory company, he was asked to appear in the Los Angeles production of Lonne Elder III's musical "Daddy Goodness," which led to his meeting Gordon Parks, who gave Hudson the costarring role in his first feature film, Leadbelly (1976). Unfortunately, all that followed "Leadbelly" was a year of "bit parts and some harsh lessons about Hollywood," which led Hudson to enroll in another academic doctorate program at the University of Minnesota. He did not complete the program. Through his experience, he learned another vital lesson: "There are those who spend their lives studying it and those who spend their lives doing it." Hudson definitely wanted to be in the second group. Keeping in mind this self-revelation, Hudson accepted the starring role of Jack Jefferson in the Minneapolis Theatre In The Round's production of "The Great White Hope," a role that he put "everything he had into," including shaving his head. A series of starring and guest roles followed on such television shows as Fantasy Island (1977), The Incredible Hulk (1977), Little House on the Prairie (1974), Diff'rent Strokes (1978), Taxi (1978), One Day at a Time (1975), Gimme a Break! (1981), The A-Team (1983) and Webster (1983), as well as costarring roles in the TV movies White Mama (1980) with Bette Davis, Roots: The Next Generations (1979), Women of San Quentin (1983), California Girls (1985), Mad Bull (1977) and Love on the Run (1985). Other feature film credits include The Jazz Singer (1980), The Main Event (1979), Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone (1983), Penitentiary II (1982), Going Berserk (1983), Joy of Sex (1984) and, of course, the mega-hit Ghostbusters (1984).
We're talking about Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone in 3D on this episode of the Fan2Fan Podcast! They discuss the film's production, casting, theatrical release, 3D effects, and legacy. They also go over the movie's place among the 1980s 3D trend, comparisons to Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn, other Star Wars ripoffs, and more. The Brothers celebrate Kenny's Birthday! As a BiAP tradition, full creative control is given to the host on their birthday. That means the show is completely of their own design, and it's a doozy. For today's show, Kenny takes us all on a trip down memory lane with two movies from his younger years. You may not know this, but Kenny has a massive collection of movies. A portion of his collection is of movies that were put out to pasture by critics and audiences alike. We jokingly refer to this portion of his collection as “Kenny's Crap Corner”. The beauty of Kenny's Crap Corner is that each of these films has a sentimental meaning for Kenny, and every time he watches them, he is transported to the events of his life that happened the first time he saw each film. Join us as Kenny introduces two films that neither Del nor our featured guests Leigh and Chris had ever seen, and perhaps you as well. Kenny will tell us the story of why these movies have a place in his heart, and of course, we'll break them down like we always do. Laced with nostalgia, and creative sound effects, this is truly going to be movie review entertainment. Our movies are each celebrating 40 years, which is why this is a Craptassversary Episode. Instead of our usual deep-dive review, today's show will follow our anniversary-style show, only hitting the highlights of each movie. Today's movies are Spacehunter Adventures in the Forbidden Zone (1983) and Jaws 3D (1983).Thanks for listening and feel free to hit us up on any of our social media platforms!https://linktr.ee/BiAPodcastKenny's Letterboxd account: https://letterboxd.com/knnthp3/Theme song "Loli'ana" written and performed by award-winning musician Kamuela Kahoano. Dan and Conrad venture into the Forbidden Zone in stunning 80s 3D for this episode, with only a 14-year-old Molly Ringwald as their guide,Peter Strauss as their store-brand Han Solo hero and Ernie Hudson as... I dunno... someone who is also there? It's 80s b-movie sci-fi at its finest, as the world-weary bounty hunter Wolff (with two 'f's) drives across a desert planet to rescue three supermodels from the clutches of the mutant dictator, Overdog, played by Michael Ironside, whose attempts to chew scenery are frustrated by his being strapped to a camera crane throughout the movie. It's an obvious cashgrab aping both Star Wars and Mad Max, but does it deserve to linger in the Oubliette forever? Find out! In this episode of the show, we are talking about Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone as part of our 80s space western January expedition. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about how this movie fits into the legacy of Star Wars, how it borrows a thing or two from The Road Warrior, and how it sets up a few things for Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome to draw from. We also talk about Ernie Hudson's muscles, Peter Strauss as Harrison Ford you can afford and the problematic nature of aggressive shampooing your sidekicks among other things. Peter Strauss channels Charlton Heston cosplaying as Han Solo as he goes to rescue Andie Walsh in this low budget Star Wars/Mad Max mash-up. Add a dash of chapter-like adventure and a smidge of Mars red sand, and you've got our movie! Should this movie be exiled to the Forbidden Zone? You'll have to judge for yourself!

Who remembers this movie? ...Hell, who even seen this movie?? Opening weekend it brought in over $7million dollars, so somebody had to have seen it. It has a lot going for it; good actors, great set pieces, a fantastic villain, but good ingredients don't always make a delicious dish. Either way, let's see if Spacehunter offers some entertainment value. The second greatest space epic of 1983! This episode was originally our very first Patreon-exclusive back on 25 October 2019. It was the first episode of J and Lazy N Review… before we decided to just incorporate this kind of thing into the regular podcast. They were always more ramble than review. However, this and the two others that will follow have been re-edited from their "master files”, not they're not exactly the same. You wouldn't know it, but Lazy N has learned a few tricks in the last nine months. A few seconds here and there will amaze you. Maybe. Not. Oh, and there are going to be spoilers for a 37-year-old movie... You've been warned. Our theme music is "Back to the Grind" by Billie Stevens. Podcast logo by Lazy N. Saturday Mornings The Herculoids have always been a favorite of shazbazzar and JediShua, and with their amalgamation of style (prehistory fused with the future), the cartoon looks a bit dystopia. The eight-member team is heavily weighted against the humans on this super team of good guys. History Lesson In May 2013, shazbazzar mentioned a movie’s release on May 20, 1983. That movie was Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone. Guess what? We watch it again. The Future’s Not So Bright (Dystopian Summer) If Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone even remotely resembles the future, we’re all going to be disappointed. That’s nothing against the 1983 film’s effects, props, story, or acting chops and everything with all the bad things that happen to Wolff and Niki during their 3-D adventures in the Forbidden Zone. Even if you’ve never seen this movie, you should check out the discussion. It’s a good movie! Maaaaaates. The moors around Manchester are literally on fire. It hasn’t rained in Rain City for over 3 weeks. But we haven’t let it stop us from doing a 3 HOUR PODCAST! This episode we discuss why we hate muscleman Chris Pratt, the mantic space dungeon crawler Space Saga, talk about playing RPG’s over t’interwebs and we answer some listener questions. Ager also tells us why every film must be a SPACE FILM as we made him watch Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone. Also “growler” is a meat pie….. It's another movie-themed show, because Kornflake finally saw the latest Star Wars movie, just in time for actor John Boyega's birthday. (You know John. He plays Finn, the Stormtrooper with a heart of gold.) We also discuss Kornflake's January movie (for each month of 2018, she is watching a classic movie she should have seen years ago), Labyrinth! (Come on, it's Bowie and Muppets. Can't go wrong.) Then following a super-quick review of Black Panther, the rest of the show is all about Molly. We're gonna need 34 more candles, because our favorite Brat Packer, Molly Ringwald, just turned 50! So we're looking back at Molly's career, from Facts of Life (first season only, alas) through the John Hughes years and beyond, up to her present role as Archie's mom on Riverdale. And because Kevin just saw it, we spend way too much time on 1983's Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone. It has Molly, and Ernie Hudson, and space chickens, so we love it. There's some TV talk as well, about One Day at a Time and Red Oaks, because we also enjoy creepy 1980s mustache dudes. Don't judge us. Anyway, Happy Birthday, Molly! Next week: MarsCon.
Keeping in mind this self-revelation, Hudson accepted the starring role of Jack Jefferson in the Minneapolis Theatre In The Round's production of "The Great White Hope," a role that he put "everything he had into," including shaving his head. A series of starring and guest roles followed on such television shows as Fantasy Island (1977), The Incredible Hulk (1978), Little House on the Prairie (1974), Diff'rent Strokes (1978), Taxi (1978), One Day at a Time (1975), Gimme a Break!
Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone Attack of the SciFi Clone It is a dark time for the podcast. Although the recordings have been going well, listeners have been hiding in their bases(Mack and Peter assume) missing the waves of love of b-movies and obscure films our podcasters have been floating throughout the galaxy. Evading the dreaded negative review, our galactic movie lovers led by Mack CONSTANT-TALKER have established a new secret tactic discovered on an unnamed remote ice world. Custodian of the secret tactic, The Icebreaker, the cinema geeks start the long journey home. During the voyage the film nerds managed to get themselves stuck in an asteroid field filled with 80s movie clones of a popular SciFi series. Stumbling upon a less hostile one, "Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone", they set up camp in their bunk beds and feast their eyeballs and earholes on a charming space escapade with likable heroes, great sets, awesome vehicles and wonderfully evil baddies. Peter Wauntztugo-SOLO, obsessed with trolling young CONSTANT-TALKER, has used faithful SPEW(Spoiler Protection Edict Widget) to dispatch thousands of interwebular bots into the far reaches of space....in hopes that they stop talking about Molly Ringwald and just get back to discussing the movie!! Going to be to be easy for our guys to bring balance to the episode it is not. Yes, hmmm. May the Movie Ball be with them...and Super, I guess. And may you all pull away from TLJ spoilers, just like pulling out of beggar's canyon. #supermovieball #spacehunter #starwars #clippertrain Follow Us: supermovieball.com = web supermovieball = twitter supermovieball@gmail.com = email super-movie-ball = soundcloud Music By: Intro = Original_Music By Joe D'Agostino Outro = By RoccoW & xyce

Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone (1983) is a b-movie space adventure staring Peter Strauss, Molly Ringwald, Ernie Hudson and Michael Ironside, but there’s a budget behind it. Molly Ringwald and Ernie Hudson (a.k.a. the black Ghostbuster) star in 1983's 3D Star Wars ripoff bonanza, about a Han Solo type (Peter Strauss) who travels to a desert planet to save some hot earth women from the lecherous Overdog (Michael Ironside). What is absent is a significant amount of hunting in space, and we're not entirely sure how forbidden this zone is. Produced by Ivan Reitman and part of the resurgence of crappy 3D movies in the early 80s with incredibly long names.
