Ed Yong's writing about the pandemic in Atlantic Magazine was read by millions of Americans. He won a Pulitzer Prize in 2021 for his coverage. Host Nate Hegyi sits down with Ed for a conversation about how he decided to step back from pandemic reporting, the benefits (and possible drawbacks) of birdwatching for mental health, and the unexpected club that's bringing two halves of his life together. A distinctive booming sound is returning to the Wairarapa Moana. Most of the surrounding wetlands have been lost after land was drained for farming. Now, after years of rehabilitation work, more of the Australasian Bittern have been heard lately. Country Life heads out at dusk to listen for the matuku-hurepō.
Charlie Mgee is a songwriter, ukulele player, permaculturist and founder of the world-renowned ecological funk/swing band, Formidable Vegetable. Growing up in a tin shed with a veggie garden, rainwater tank and one 100W solar panel for power in the south-west of Western Australia, Charlie lived the low-impact lifestyle from a young age, using a 'Dunny' that didn't flush and hanging out with his chickens for entertainment, which made him realise early on that you don't need a lot in life to be happy.Later on, Charlie went off to study permaculture and, soon after, formed Formidable Vegetable – a band based entirely around principles of sustainable living and being good to the planet, with the hope of inspiring people everywhere to grow regenerative gardens/lives/communities and generally make the world a better place. In this episode, Charlie shares his earlier childhood years living in Arnhem land and how this time influenced his perspective of music as a pattern language, and the powerful experiences he had listening to the traditional songs as a way of knowing and remembering, to propagate culture. Our conversation explores his career as a musician, how he came to use it as a tool for education and why he believes that real change is going to happen at a community level with local and bioregional scale solutions. We touch on topics such as; diversity in our landscapes and gut microbiome, the soil food web, and staying healthy on tour with some special medicinal plants.Charlie's music has since made it into the United Nations (who praised Formidable Vegetable for writing about the 'important issues of our time'), onto the stages at Glastonbury Festival alongside such acts as Ed Sheeran, Katy Perry and The Rolling Stones and has inspired the creation of many a backyard and community garden.Fresh from a sold-out national tour, Formidable Vegetable is back with some all-new Spoonbill-boosted electro-funk and positive climate action that the whole neighbourhood can get down to as they launch their brand new album 'Micro Biome' - an organic harvest of family-flavoured beets to inspire young and old to connect to the beyond-human World. With the recent sightings of the Roseate Spoonbill in Green Bay, Wisconsin we thought it would be a good time to discuss these amazing birds. John Bates, Shannon Hackett, RJ Pole, and Amanda Marquart talk what gives them their bright pink color, why they have a receding hairline, and what they are doing so far up north. We also discuss briefly the Limpkin that has been seen up in the Chicago area, and answer a question from one of our listeners. The listener Dustin Weidner is a photographer in Chicago, and reached out to us on Instagram with a question about the Great Blue Heron. Some gulls and terns may show a glowing pink color, similar to that of flamingos and spoonbills. This pink color comes from pigments in the birds' food called carotenoids. These gulls and terns are able to convert these naturally occurring pigments to hues that may enhance their success at attracting a mate.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote? Spoonbill rebel with Larry Nixon, part 3!
If there ever was an animal more perfect for this show; its the echidna! Also, the Roseate Spoonbill is weird. Try not to get turned off by these animals' weird names...these are real animals and these are their real names. The pink spoon shaped billed bird that can be found in the wetland marshes of Florida is the Roseate Spoonbill. And is the first animal we'll be talking about today. Its got pink feathers (but is not, nor is related to the flamingo. Its related to the pelican), but like the flamingo their pink is based on their food. And what's up with their beak? What's the point of the weird pancake shape of the spoonbill's beak? You'll soon find out.And what is an echidna? Or is it a spiny anteater? Is it a mammal? A reptile? A bird? Is it a marsupial like a kangaroo? It has a pouch. But it lays eggs? But it looks like a hedgehog. What even is the echidna? We will break down the udder weirdness that is the echidna and learn why the echidna and platypus are two weird cousins who are the rebels of the mammal world. Also, echidna's don't have nipples, but they have a four-headed penis (Thanks Alexander for the recommendation). Also, what's a puggle? You'll be happy you asked. Here are the silly scientific names:Roseate Spoonbill: Platalea ajajaEastern long-beaked echidna: Zaglossus bartoniSir David's long-beaked echidna: Zaglossus attenboroughiWestern long-beaked echidna: Zaglossus bruijniiShort-beaked echidna: Tachyglossus aculeatusPlease rate and review the show! This is Roald Tweet on Rock Island. Before I moved to the Mississippi River, I used to worry about God. He never seemed to have much fun. Oh, no question but that he did good work. His zebra had just the right proportion of black and white stripes, his giraffe's neck and back were so angled as to make you want to slide down it like a bannister, and his elephant looked exactly the way an animal named elephant should look like.

Your grocery and drug store purchase cards allow the stores to predict when you're going to need laundry detergent and Advil, and when you don't buy it in time they send you a coupon to get you to come back in. Then there's an even more advanced (some might call it "insidious") form of Artificial Iintelligence (A.I), like Frankie Russo's. Frankie's A.I knows you want to buy a car before you do. We humans have an uneasy relationship with algorithms and robots. Sure, we create them. But there is a general sense of foreboding about a world where humans and algorithmic-driven bots co-exist. Part of that fear is rooted in a Hollywood science-fiction vision of the future, which is more fiction than science. And then there's the all-too-real truth about the advent of driverless cars; the massed DNA information database that Ancestry.com is building; and how much Facebook knows about you already. When you consider this growth of Artificial Intelligence, you might start to realize that a science fiction future isn't going to look like a Will Smith movie - where we're fighting humanoids in the streets - but it's also not futuristic. It's happening right now. Even right here in Acadiana. In fact, one of the pioneers of artificial intelligence in the world of marketing is Lafayette's own Frankie Russo. Frankie Russo is a pioneer in the field of Artificial Intelligence in the world of marketing. Which is why Frankie's company, 360 IA, knows what you want to buy, before you do. If you think that's fascinating, listen to this conversation. If you think someone who can accurately predict your purchasing future is just too freaky, you might want to skip this. You can see photos by Lucius Fontenot from this show, recorded at Spoonbill Watering Hole & Restaurant in downtown Lafayette, here. You can hear Frankie's previous appearance on Out to Lunch here. At the end of the day, business is all about sales. You might have a revolutionary idea for a business or a product. You might even be a genius. But if you can't sell, you might as well just leave all your brilliant ideas in your desk drawer. The art of sales is a particular skill. And it doesn't come naturally to everyone. That's why Reece Theriot started up his company, Fulcrum Sales and Marketing. Fulcrum is a professional sales staff who you can hire to sell your great idea or product. The benefit to you as a business person is, you don't have to hire, train, and pay a full-time sales staff. Reece and his team at Fulcrum set up meetings and pitch your product for you. In a world of out-sourcing, cost-cutting, and increasing specialization, it's amazing nobody around here has thought of this before. Marcus Descant has the polar opposite take on sales. Marcus is a horticulturalist and the owner of a company called The Urban Naturalist. Marcus was on Out to Lunch back in 2016. At that time he talked about his unique landscaping and gardening business that flipped the traditional concept of planting flowers in the front of your house and fruit and vegetables in the back. It was a concept he was calling the Edible Garden. Marcus hasn't totally quit doing landscaping but he's scaled back that side of his business. Now he concentrates more on selling plants. He grows and sells up to 40,000 plants a year. His nursery is open 24 hours a day. And here's the final statistic - the number of sales people Marcus employs. Zero. Marcus dramatically cut his overhead by disbanding his sales staff and selling his plants and garden products on the self-serve honesty system. And, guess what? Sales have increased! Photos over lunch at Spoonbill restaurant in downtown Lafayette by Lucius Fontenot. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
If everything worked out the way you thought it was going to, 10 or 20 years ago, what kind of a life would you be leading today? It's fascinating to ponder how different the world might be if Jeff Bezos didn't quit his job and start Amazon. Or if William Shakespeare had been content to make a living as an actor and hadn't started writing. We all change course. We change our minds. We fall in love, with a career or a person, and things that were quietly rolling along are suddenly off the rails and we're going in a whole other direction. Heather Degeyter is a prime example. Heather was, step by step, building a career as an academic. She got a masters degree in language and literature at UL. And she was teaching at LSU, when she gave it all up. To make macarons. In June of 2019, Heather turned what was a passion and a growing home-business, making macarons to order, into a full-time job, and a storefront bakery on Kaliste Saloom in Lafayette, called Bonne Vie Macarons. And then there's the story of Stephen Verrett, who dropped out of college to become a freelance web designer. If you're waiting for a story about how Stephen became a fabulously successful web designer... well, I could tell that story, but instead I'm going to tell you how he gave that up - to open a restaurant in Lafayette. Along with a couple of partners, Stephen took over what was the old Filling Station restaurant - which itself was originally a gas station - and turned it into Spoonbill. Today, we're sitting a table at Spoonbill, across from its co-owner, Stephen Verrett. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Los Angeles, 1935. It’s the heart of the Great Depression and Philip Marlowe is broke. He’s contemplating whether he should pawn his .38, give up his Private Investigator’s license, and find another profession. He stops into his friend Lou’s automat for a sandwich. Lou tells Marlowe he’s got some work for him to do. It sounds like it’s Marlowe’s lucky day… or is it? Author Raymond Chandler set The Big Sleep, the first of his novels involving famous private detective Philip Marlowe in (then) present-day 1936, but who was Marlowe before The Big Sleep? In A Man Named Marlowe, we’ll find out. It’s a story with an empowered woman, heinous crimes, back room deals, gruesome murders, hundreds of thousands of dollars of gold, and two long-dead ghosts that teach us heroes can live forever. Episode 81 comes to us by way of our favorite master of the funk infused, squishy bass — the one and only VibeSquaD! This new mix contains a few tunes from his recent album Spinning Gears and Making Things. He also drops a couple of our old favorites, Swivel and Snagglepuss. Also notable are the Spoonbill collaboration and the remixes for Hellfire Machina and previous Memekast selector Freddy Todd (mk075). Definitely one of the most solid Memekasts to date, and we're stoked to be able to share it with you.
This one's been a long time coming. As one half of Bay Beat Collective (BBC), Sohail Arora has been pushing low end sounds for over 4 years. His solo project Ez Riser aims to showcase newer forms of exactly that, yet with particular focus on glitch-hop and electronica (with a touch of hip-hop). A self confessed music geek and influenced by artists such as Koan Sound, Spoonbill, Opiuo and Griz (all currently destroying dancefloor's across the world), it's not hard to see where he gets his patronage for bass. As the founder of KRUNK, India's foremost alternative booking agency and events crew, Sohail has also over the years been responsible for touring acts such as Concord Dawn, Klute, London Elektricity, Koan Sound and Dub Phizix across India, whilst representing some of the freshest local sounds, including at a time, Dualist Inquiry and Reggae Rajahs with more recent additions such as Delhi Sultanate, BASSFoundation, Ox7gen and Sandunes. If like us, you've kept your ear to the ground, you'll know that he's done a lot. Ever attend any of the editions of BASS CAMP Festival? That's him too. Ultimately, it's Ez Riser's fidelity to the low end that ties his sound (and most probably life) together. And in truly well expected fashion, Wild City #051 absolutely bangs. From the stuttering almost-booty beat of Snareophobe's 'Stress Relief', right through to the fluttering groove of Heyoka's 'Glibidy Glob' and the hyper 'Eastern Thug', this is a mix made with the dancefloor in mind as much as the bedroom. And although the sounds may be familiar, the vibe is undeniably fresh - simply solid all the way through and that's more than enough. Fill your boots. "Introduction to glitch; Introducing a wide range of glitch influences, new and old on my 1st ever Wild City mix. Strictly for your best pair of headphones or sound system. Hope y'all like it." - Ez Riser For a tracklist and further info, head over here: http://www.thewildcity.com/EN/music.xhtml/article/3714-wild-city-051-ez-riser
The paddlefish or spoonbill (Polyodon spathula) is native to a number of large North American rivers, including the Ohio River. One remarkable feature of this awesome species is the prominent rostrum or paddle, an extension of the skull that grows rapidly soon after the fish hatch. Dr. Robertson will describe his collaborative research into the functional morphology and growth of the rostrum, including capstone projects and course-based studies.
Nearly two feet of newly fallen snow proved little obstacle for fans to clap their eyes on musician Bill Callahan on a recent winter's night. Callahan, known to many by the name Smog, drew a hip crowd to Spoonbill and Sugartown in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, for a reading from his novel, Letters to Emma Bowlcut. The book, read in the author’s halting, sonorous voice, consists of correspondence written by a man to a woman he met at a party. Readers aren’t provided much context for the meeting but can sense the relationship develop as the letters progress. During the lengthy question-and-answer session that followed his reading, Callahan admitted he was attached to the art of letter writing. “If I was younger and had never experienced life without the Internet, then it probably would have been e-mails, but I’m still holding onto pen and paper,” he said. Callahan also noted that he’s focusing on his music these days, but that he might publish another book in five years or so, which was how long it took him to write Letters to Emma Bowlcut. Click the audio player above to hear the full reading. Here are our bon mots from the event: Reading from Letter 37: "My voice has a strange accent lately—wistful Korean grocer chiding a pyramid of pomegranates."Reading from Letter 39: "It smoothed me out to read your letter. Despite your strife, you are so tender to me. I was certain it was going to be a Vicodin night, as I needed some pinning down. But I lost that feeling when I read what you wrote."Reading from Letter 40: "Everything that I have done today could have been done by a bear. The long seasoned sleep. The lumbering out of bed. Tearing at a hard roll dipped in honey. And then sprawling lazily in the grass where the sun hit. I was going to take a bath but decided that would have been too much bear activity." Below, listen to excerpts of Callahan's answers from the question-and-answer session. He discusses what he's currently reading and names the two songs that were originally written as poems.
