Today's guest is author-illustrator Jena Benton. Talking with her was so inspiring, I had to stop myself from writing down everything she said as a quote to share. Please enjoy her love of language, books, Alaska, community, and creativity. Some Highlights: The impact teachers can have early on, whether to encourage or discourage our creativity. Writing play manuscripts in high school. “Networking is about the friends you make along the way.” Soundproof kid's corners for loud reading. Book recommendation love and kidlit obsession. Alaskan road systems. The traveling bard revival and why we need more oral storytellers. Cheesecake moments. It is important to have a community to support you through obstacles and let yourself experience the obstacles–be sad–but have a deadline to get back up and keep going. They very generously share those journeys with us here—everything from the decision about which route to go, to the editing process, how they found their illustrators, what their distribution looks like, the percentage return they receive on book sales, special military/aviation-related considerations about depicting specific ‘brand' images, to book promotion and lessons learned along the way. Today I am so pleased to introduce you to author Steena Hernandez. Steena's debut picture book, Lupita's Brown Ballet Slippers, illustrated by Melissa Castillo is coming out with Beaming Books on October 22, 2024.  It was a joy to talk with Steena and I can't thank her enough for being on the show. Here are some highlights: The joy of being a library family and sharing that time together, picking whatever book your heart desires. The overwhelming generosity found within the kidlit world. The beauty of the two way street one can find in kidlit critique group relationships. Chalk painting and walking in nature to refill a creative well running dry. Her home that is full of chalk painted furniture. How joyful it is to go back after the chalk paint dries with a bottle cap and scrape the paint away, creating something worn and new at the same time.  How powerful it can be to step away from our writing. Taking a real break from it and coming back after a week away. Her background in professional dance and it's inspiration to create her debut picture book. Writing for the little girl who wants to see someone who looks like her on the cover. On episode 65 of the podcast, I’m joined by children’s book author, educator, and activist Joanna Ho. Joanna is the New York Times bestselling author of Eyes that Kiss in the Corners, a beautiful picture book that tells the story of a little Asian girl who learns to love and appreciate the shape of her eyes.    Joanna holds a BA in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, and a master’s from the Principal Leadership Institute at Berkeley. She has been an English teacher, a dean, the designer of an alternative-to-prison program, and a professional development mastermind. She is currently the vice principal of a high school in the Bay Area. Joanna Ho Wants to Change the World with her Writing During our conversation, which felt like a chat with an old friend, Joanna shares how writing for young people is part of her anti-racism activism; why it makes her sad that so many Asian women love her book; how she reacted when her first attempts at writing picture books were rejected; and why she’s not interested in leaving her day job to pursue writing full time, despite the fact that she has three other books already in the works! Joanna Ho is an absolute delight and I hope you enjoy the show! A Meltingpot Minute About Multicultural Witches During the Meltingpot Minute, I take a moment to preview next week's episode and to share my review for the amazing new novel, The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow.  Literary Links from the Show Grab your copy of Eyes that Kiss in the Corners To keep up with all of the amazing content Joanna puts out in the world, visit her website at JoannaHowrites.com. While you wait for Joanna's book about YoYo Ma at the border, check out this article from Time magazine about some of his humanitarian work. Joanna just finished reading Punching the Air by Yusef Salem and Ibi Zoboi. You might want to read it too. You might also like American Street by Ibi Zoboi. I reviewed it a few years ago on the blog.  If you'd like to take some classes or learn more about writing for children, do what Joanna did and check out the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). Buy yourself some beautiful pajamas or a lovely nightgown, so you can read in bed in style...like me. Visit the Printfresh online store and use the promocode LORILTHARPS for 15% off your order. Hey y'all! Thank you so much for listening this month. This episode I wanted to highlight self-published author Kim C. Lee! We talk about the process of self-publishing a book, discovering new technologies and our favorite reads of 2020 AND of all time. Kim C. Lee - a lover of stories that tickle the heart - is a children's book author and literacy advocate. As a mother, she can attest to the importance of diverse representation in literature and the impacts that its absence and presence can have on children. Inspired by her son, she writes to illuminate the perspectives and experiences of African American children. Kim released her first book, The Night Owl, in July 2020 and then followed it up with second book, Meet Frankie Jordan, in January 2021. At home in Maryland, Kim enjoys spending time with family and tinkering with gadgets of all sorts. Kim is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). How can children grow to realize their inherent rights and respect the rights of others? In Human Rights in Children's Literature: Imagination and the Narrative of Law (Oxford University Press, 2016), authors Jonathan Todres and Sarah Higinbotham explore this question through both human rights law and children's literature. Both international and domestic law affirm that children have rights, but how are these norms disseminated so that they make a difference in children's lives? Human rights education research demonstrates that when children learn about human rights, they exhibit greater self-esteem and respect the rights of others. The Convention on the Rights of the Child — the most widely-ratified human rights treaty — not only ensures that children have rights, it also requires that states make those rights “widely known, by appropriate and active means, to adults and children alike.” This first-of-its-kind requirement for a human rights treaty indicates that if rights are to be meaningful to the lives of children, then government and civil society must engage with those rights in ways that are relevant to children. Human Rights in Children's Literature investigates children's rights under international law — identity and family rights, the right to be heard, the right to be free from discrimination, and other civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights — and considers the way in which those rights are embedded in children's literature from Peter Rabbit to Horton Hears a Who! to Harry Potter. This book traverses children's rights law, literary theory, and human rights education to argue that in order for children to fully realize their human rights, they first have to imagine and understand them. “Anyone can make a difference. Find a problem, get some friends together, and go fix it. Remember you don't have to change the world, just change your world.” –Joan Trumpauer Mulholland In the early 1960s, in the segregated South, a white teenager, Joan Trumpauer Mulholland, made a conscientious decision to join the Civil Rights struggle. In doing so she put her life at risk, but given her family history (the first relative to come to America did so as an indentured servant in the 1600s; her grandmother was a suffragette) she could not sit idly by as blacks were treated like second-class citizens. She organized non-violent sit-ins, attended a predominately black college, and participated in protests including the March on Washington and the Selma to Montgomery March. She was arrested and held on death row; she was spit on, dragged off her stool and threatened with violence at a Woolworths lunch counter sit-in, yet she never relented. Now readers of all ages can learn more about this extraordinary woman in She Stood for Freedom: The Untold Story of a Civil Rights Hero, Joan Trumpauer Mulholland (Shadow Mountain, 2016). The picture book is for ages 4 to 8; the illustrated biography is for ages 8 and older and includes primary source photographs and documents from the period. She Stood for Freedom has been nominated for the 2017 Amelia Bloomer Award, part of the American Library Association's Task Force on Social Responsibility recognizing the best feminist books for young readers that “affirm positive roles for girls and women.” Susan Raab is president of Raab Associates, an internationally recognized agency that specializes in marketing literature, products and initiatives that help improve the lives of young people.
