This week, Krista takes a look back at her 2019 conversation with Brené Brown. It's incredible to think that it's been 13 years since Brené delivered her life changing TED talk “The Power of Vulnerability” on the TEDxHouston stage. The year after this episode was recorded, Brené launched two podcasts of her own which recently wrapped up – "Unlocking Us" and "Dare to Lead." In 2021, she published another best selling book, "Atlas of the Heart," which inspired a five-part docuseries. In this interview, Brené takes us back to the very beginning of her story from her early dreams of moving to New York, to her close call hitchhiking in Spain, to her struggle to get into the University of Texas.

Episode Description:Why You Can't Stay Small and Silent discusses why many of us who experienced emotional, narcissistic, and other forms of abuse stay small and invisible to feel safe. If we've been taught we are to be seen and not heard, our ideas are stupid, or taking risks were shot down with rejection, this is a normal response to this trauma. The podcast also discusses why we cannot stay small if we want to fulfill God's calling on our lives, and why God does not want us to stay small and silent. We discuss examples of people who did not stay small and silent and the difference they have made in others' lives. What if they had stayed small and silent? How many lives would never have changed? We cannot stay small and silent. Your message may resonate with others more than someone else's. You will not find peace unless you step up and do what God calls you to do. Don't stay small, give the world the gift that only you can give, and fulfill the unique purpose that God has given you. We often distinguish between “Creatives” and “Scientists.” But today's guest is the personification of the blending of both. As a classically trained performer, Mariam has a perspective on how we show up that challenges our “practice makes perfect” paradigm. Instead, it's about practicing in a way that turns knowledge into skill and new skill into skills that can be trusted to support showing up full out. And in showing up confidently, you are more likely to make the impact you desire. Michelle Poler is one of the biggest stars in the public speaking world. Her brand is distinctive, unique, and stands out from the pack -- and it all happened when she stopped worrying about pleasing everyone else, and started bringing more of herself to her work. She has a new book -- Hello, Fears -- that can help you do the same thing. In this episode, we talk about public speaking, chasing your fears, how to create a remarkable brand, and what Michelle learned about the power of being herself in front of others. In 2015, Michelle started a project called www.100dayswithoutfear.com. Where she vlogged for 100 days as she conquered her fears from eating oysters to holding a cat, from skydiving to writing an honest letter to her parents. On the 100th day, she gave a speech at TEDxHouston which changed the trajectory of her life as she launched a huge brand and career as a speaker.
In 2010, a research professor by the name of Brené Brown walked onto the TEDxHouston stage and delivered her talk, “The Power of Vulnerability.” Little did she know that this would change her life forever. That TED talk has now been viewed more than 50 million times, making Brown a global phenomenon. She is the author of five bestselling books, including “Daring Greatly,” “Rising Strong,” and “Dare to Lead,” and now Brown has a Netflix special, “The Call to Courage.” In this conversation, Brown takes us back to the very beginning of the story, from her early dreams of moving to New York, to her close call hitchhiking in Spain, to her struggle to get into the University of Texas. She also talks about faith and family, navigating success, and how she’s missing the “celebrity gene.”
“There is only one thing, and one thing only, that you are allowed to give feedback about.” In the last episode, Mike and Ethan Nash broke down the basics of delivering feedback in a way that actually communicates your truth while still keeping you connected relationally to the other person. Now it's time to crank it up a notch. Welcome to the graduate-level course of giving feedback. In part 2, the Nash team explains why you can only give feedback about one thing: behavior. Not attitudes, not intentions, only behavior. They break down the three elements of good feedback: behavior, the impact of that behavior and replacement behavior. Additionally, they touch on the pitfalls of giving feedback via email or notes…a big no-no. I love Brené Brown’s story. A “late bloomer,” Brené graduated from her undergrad when she was 29 years old, then proceeded straight into her master’s and Ph.D. programs. She experienced first-hand the impact of amazing professors and knew what she wanted her life’s work to be—changing the lives of students while getting to talk about what she was passionate about. And Brené is passionate about vulnerability. She shared her passion in a TedxHouston talk, “The Power of Vulnerability,” and to her great surprise it went viral. To date, it has been viewed over 35 million times online and is one of the top 5 TED talks of all time. Join us as we discuss what brings Brené joy; who inspired her to pay attention to vulnerability; and how the stories we tell ourselves can make or break us. In this episode of the Blanchard LeaderChat podcast, Chad Gordon interviews Dr. Brené Brown, researcher and author of three #1 New York Times Bestsellers: The Gifts of Imperfection (2010), Daring Greatly (2012), and Rising Strong (2015). Brown and her work have been featured on PBS, NPR, CNN, and at TEDx Houston, where in 2010 she presented one of the top five most viewed TED talks of all time. Brown describes her work with large organizations on the topics of vulnerability, empathy, courage, and values—and how to make skills in these areas a part of your leadership development efforts. Drawing from fifteen years of research, Brown shares how to be a courageous leader. Her findings? Vulnerability is courage in the face of risk, uncertainty, and emotional exposure. According to Brown, you have to be willing to show up, be seen, and be all in—even when you can’t control the outcome. As Brown explains, “What do transformational leaders have in common? A capacity for discomfort and a keen awareness of both their own emotional landscape and the emotional landscapes of others.” Brown also shares key points from her most recent book, Rising Strong—teaching leaders how to get back up when they fall in the service of being brave. Be sure to listen to the very end of this 35-minute interview to hear Ken Blanchard share his thoughts and personal takeaways on Brené’s ideas.
The questions and research discussed on this episode was taken from 2001 to about 2013 from Dr. Brene Brown. Vulnerability is the central focus of her research, which includes shame and guilt. In short, guilt is "Sorry I made a mistake," and shame is "Sorry I am a mistake." For the next few episodes connections will be made, and with the right questions, we can move forward with a little more peace of mind. Michelle Poler Speaker Youtuber Fear Facer Creator of Hello Fears and 100 Days Without Fear http://www.michellepoler.com Hello Fears"Facing your fears is scary, but living in fear is terrifying." Born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela to a family of holocaust survivors, Michelle was accustomed to living with fear. But when she moved to New York to pursue a Masters in Branding at the School of Visual Arts, Michelle quickly realized that NYC was not for the fearful. In efforts to re-write her definition of fear, Michelle completed a project where she faced 100 fears in 100 days. At around day 40, the project was discovered by the media becoming a viral phenomenon. Facing her fears took Michelle to TEDx’s stage where she completed her 100th challenge. This helped her turn a personal project into a global movement, allowing her to quit her job as Art Director in Y&R to pursue her passion. Michelle discovered that inspiring others to go after their fears was her new calling. She is now touring the world speaking at companies, schools and organizations teaching audiences how to step outside their comfort zones as a way to tap into their full potential. She is also the founder at Hello Fears, a platform where everyday people get to inspire everyday people with stories of courage. The following is from 100dayswithoutfear.com and in Michelle's own words. Thinking about it, living in fear worked out pretty good for me. I got to live a controlled lifestyle where things would normally go according to plan. Until now. In 2014, I moved to New York City to start a Master's Degree in Branding at the School of Visual Arts. Trying to control New York was a complete nightmare, but what really pushed me to pursue this project was not the controlled lifestyle I was leaving behind, but the frustration of not enjoying this city and life in general to the fullest. Since the unknown has proven to be so much more fulfilling than the familiar, I decided to face all of my fears one by one being completely vulnerable about it and trying to enjoy the ride. On October 18th, 2015 I faced my last fear: to speak at TEDxHouston. I not only faced the big fear of public speaking but I empowered millions to step out of their comfort zone and live a life without fear, which is the biggest reward I obtained by starting this amazing initiative. From that day on I decided to dedicate my life to encourage as many people as possible to start living a more fulfilled lifestyle by speaking at schools, organizations and companies all over the world. I also launched an online platform for everyday people to get inspired by everyday people. Hello Fears is a community of non-conformists who understand there is no such thing as being fearless but appreciate bravery in every way. Dr. Brené Brown (@BreneBrown) is a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. Brené's 2010 TEDx Houston talk, The Power of Vulnerability, has been viewed more than 31 million times and is one of the top five most viewed TED talks in the world. She has spent the past 13 years studying vulnerability, courage, worthiness, and shame. Brené is the author of three #1 New York Times bestsellers: Daring Greatly and The Gifts of Imperfection, and Rising Strong. This episode turned into a therapy session of sorts for me because I felt like I needed a lot of help related to topics she has explored. I thought I would give you a sample of some of the highlights -- the things I applied to my own life and have revisited many times since. It's really a sample of a small profile in my new book Tools of Titans. Please enjoy this distilled collection of highlights from Dr. Brené Brown. Be sure to stay tuned for a surprise at the end! There are few names that have brought as much notoriety asBreneBrown over the last few years. She sprang on the "scene" in 2010 with her TEDx Houston talk:ThePower of Vulnerability. But Brene's story goes back even further than that. For her entire academic and professional life, Brenehasdedicated herself to the study and practice of social work. Shehasa Bachelors... Masters... AND Ph.D. (NBD) in Social Workandremains a research professor in the subject for the UniversityofHouston to this day.In short, she's a badass.A badass who's out to prove that vulnerability is not whatwemade it out to be. In fact, a bunch of my start-ups are already using Vimeo Pro. WealthFront uses it to explain how it develops personalized investment portfolios. TaskRabbit uses it to tell the company’s story. Twitter uses it to showcase Periscope. Why are they using it instead of other options out there? Vimeo Pro provides enterprise level video hosting that typically costs thousands of dollars for a tiny fraction of the cost. Features include: Gorgeous high-quality playback with no ads Up to 20 GB of video storage every week Unlimited plays and views A fully customizable video player, which can include your company logo, custom outro, and more You get all this for just $199 per year (that’s only $17 per/mo.) This is the deepest discount you will find anywhere for Vimeo Pro. This podcast is also brought to you by Wealthfront. Wealthfront is a massively disruptive (in a good way) set-it-and-forget-it investing service, led by technologists from places like Apple and world-famous investors. It has exploded in popularity in the last 2 years, and now has more than $2.5B under management. In fact, some of my good investor friends in Silicon Valley have millions of their own money in Wealthfront. Why? Because you can get services previously limited to the ultra-wealthy and only pay pennies on the dollar for them, and it’s all through smarter software instead of retail locations and bloated sales teams Check out wealthfront.com/tim, take their risk assessment quiz, which only takes 2-5 minutes, and they’ll show you—for free--exactly the portfolio they'd put you in. If you want to just take their advice and do it yourself, you can. Or, as I would, you can set it and forget it. Well worth a few minutes: wealthfront.com/tim.
