I spent years doing all the “right” things—vision boards, affirmations, money mindset work, deep dives into my blocks, all in hopes of becoming someone who deserved abundance. But no matter how hard I worked, nothing changed the way I hoped. The promises of the law of attraction and prosperity gospel started to feel like gaslighting—like if it wasn't working, it must be my fault. I internalized it as failure, as proof that I was broken or cursed when it came to money. And it wasn't just the inner work—I worked hard in external ways too. I built skills, pursued opportunities, worked on professional growth, and still found myself hitting the same walls. It left me questioning my worth and wondering if success was only for people who already felt whole. But I'm learning that healing isn't a prerequisite for success or for being seen, respected, or loved. We don't have to be perfectly aligned or “fixed” to deserve a breakthrough. We can be in process and still be enough. We can be messy and still make progress. Unlike abuse, Childhood Emotional Neglect is about the absence of something. Many of us who experienced it have no concrete examples of it, so we feel a sense of emptiness without concrete events to point to! This can be so confusing. This seriously painful experience of your emotions being avoided, neglected and not having a supportive place to go to for emotional soothing manifests deeply in our everyday life and every relationship: Difficulty expressing needs and emotions: because, what is they are ignored again? Fear of seeming too needy: because you got the wrong impression you were through being ignored. People-pleasing and struggling to set boundaries: as a way to stay safe and protected. Emotional withdrawal and deep fear of vulnerability: because again - what if you are ignored, rejected and abandoned again, and then all the pain from the past comes up? Difficulty recognizing emotions: because every emotion reminds you of that past neglect and abandonment - so painful! Self-blame or invalidation: you doubt yourself just like your caregivers did. Avoidance of conflict: because conflict always involves emotions and in the past, conflict meant you were often invalidated and made to feel small. Limited self-compassion and low self esteem: you will unworthy, because you hardly felt supported as a child. Challenges in trusting others: how can you trust if you were so deeply abandoned in your childhood, in such an invisible yet super painful way? Always feeling like you are too much or need to much: because you were too much for your caregivers (but this does not mean that YOU are too much, just that they did not have the tools to properly support you!) Description: While it's easy to go down a rabbit hole on the concept of narcissism, it's good to be empowered and educated and protect yourself from narcissistic behaviors in certain others. Please keep in mind that having a certain level of narcissistic traits can be healthy in a balance. However, narcissism exists on a spectrum with some people having higher narcissistic traits, and even some who have full blown NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder, which is in the DSM). We will go over the common categories of narcissists both in clinical and common spaces. Much like the word "fog," emotional manipulators will often use fear, obligation, and guilt to confuse and control people, particularly those who are sensitive, compassionate, empathetic, and may be prone to codependency. This can make sensitive Christians especially vulnerable, since they tend have a strong level of conscientiousness. Manipulators like to use tactics that will make others question themselves and their motives, often using gaslighting to keep the other person off balance. Though we are called by God to help others, it's important we examine our motives. If others are exploiting our good will with guilt to get us to do things, this is not from God. Knowing the strategies that emotional blackmailers use will help you to identify their tactics, respond constructively, protect yourself, and get your life back, so you can live the life God intended you to live. The unique nature of this kind of abuse is often unnoticed or not believed by outsiders. However, by learning to identify and understand these forms of abuse, we are able to understand what is happening to us if we are in a situation with hidden and subtle abuse, while distinguishing between abuse and normal human flaws in a relationship that we all have. Episode DescriptionIn Trauma Reenactments, we discuss what trauma reenactments are, why they happen, and practices to help us identify, stop, and prevent them from happening again. Trauma reenactments are patterns we repeat again and again similar to traumas in the past. They can be pervasive and difficult to notice, because we may believe they are "just the way things are." But they're not. While these patterns are not our fault, if we are able to identify these reenactments, be honest about what they are and where they come from, and create more space between a trigger and a reaction, we are able to gain power over the moment when a trauma reenactment starts to occur, or to stop one that is already occurring. When you have never been taught to connect to emotions or gut feelings, you can't see the manipulation or how bright the red flags are. In Part two, Susannah is explaining how low it got for her as she was relentlessly stalked by her ex partner. She describes the realisation that this toxicity has been running through her ancestral line for decades and that true healing is about making real change, and wearing that cycle breaker crown. Episode DescriptionDon't Make Trauma Your Whole Identity, discusses how trauma survivors have their entire brains rewired when they experience trauma. As a result, when we become aware of what has happened to us and start our healing journey, it can be challenging not to make trauma our entire identity. It's easy to get into a loop of overidentifying with trauma and what has happened to us, to the point we can get stuck. This isn't our fault, but we can do something about it. By separating our core identity with what happened to us, and by rewriting our identity, we can start to move past the trauma and not get stuck in this loop. No doubt, trauma impacts our identity, how we think, and how we live day to day, including how our "default mode network," or the part of our brain involved in identity, operates. However, how we relate to trauma, think about it, and work toward recovery can help us build a strong identity outside of our trauma. Did you grow up feeling seen, heard, understood, and like you belonged to a loving family, or did you grow up feeling invisible? Childhood emotional neglect can lead to people-pleasing, agreeableness, repressed anger, and enmeshed relationship dynamics such as codependency. Feeling invisible can create a need to feel seen, which may lead into augmenting the self to fit in, regardless of the consequences.  On the healing journey, where one is becoming aware and able to confront the wounds of the past, learning to speak the truth is often the first step, yet the most difficult. Most people do not know they are not truly thinking, and instead their minds are regurgitating the memories of the past and lost in expectation, as well as locked within neurological pathways created in response to trauma.  The good news is, it is possible to breakthrough the subconscious limiting beliefs of the past and learn to live above the veil of consciousness, to align with the authentic self. In this episode, you will learn about '11 not-so-obvious signs that you experienced childhood emotional neglect'. Childhood emotional neglect can have a profound impact on our lives and relationships. We can live an entire lifetime and never recognize how our childhoods may have impacted our adult lives.  Childhood emotional neglect is a type of childhood trauma that occurs when caregivers do not meet a child's emotional needs. Emotional neglect can take many forms, including ignoring a child's emotional needs, failing to provide emotional support, or failing to validate a child's feelings. Emotional neglect can be intentional or unintentional and can occur in families of all backgrounds and socioeconomic levels. Children who experience emotional neglect may grow up feeling disconnected from their emotions and struggle to identify and express their feelings. They may also have difficulty forming close relationships with others, setting boundaries, and trusting others. Emotional neglect can have long-lasting effects on a person's mental health and well-being, impacting their ability to function in their personal and professional lives.  Emotional neglect can be difficult to recognize, as it often occurs in the absence of overt abuse or neglect. However, with awareness and support, individuals who have experienced emotional neglect can heal and learn to form healthy relationships with themselves and others. It is not uncommon to struggle with the need for approval and validation as an adult when you have suffered emotional neglect as a child.
