John W. Yanta, Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Amarillo, has died. He was the first bishop of Polish background to be appointed to a Texas diocese. The South Texas native, a proud descendant of Polish immigrants, died early Aug. 6; he was 90. He was born in 1931 and grew up on the family farm in Runge.
