The Cabin
A 2024 Wisconsin Guide to New Year's Resolutions

The Cabin

The Cabin is presented by the Wisconsin Counties Association and this week we're featuring Polk County: https://bit.ly/3OELsFN  The Cabin is also brought to you by Group Health Trust: https://bit.ly/3JMizCX   Campfire Conversation:  In this episode of The Cabin, Ana, Eric, and Jake welcome 2024 and divvy up some resolutions in the areas of giving, healthier living, and healthier eating, respectively. Ana focuses on giving more in 2024 and explores a variety of interesting charitable events and organizations. She goes to Lake Geneva to explore things like the Mr. Lake Geneva Pageant, where men compete pageant-style to benefit area nonprofits as well as charity events centered around golf, biking, and more. She explores Cycling Without Age, an organization that provides rides to elderly people in need - it started in Denmark and now has chapters in 39 countries, including the US and Wisconsin. DoorTran, a transportation service in Door County, does similar work in Wisconsin's most famous peninsula. Conservation alliances in Wisconsin advance the quality of life in communities as well as the environment, and Ana shares the one in Sauk Prairie, which is also active in revamping the former Badger Army Ammunition Plant grounds. Serving as a mentor is another wonderful way to “pay it forward,” and programs like the Outagamie County Mentoring Program illustrate these benefits. She also discusses a variety of walks and runs, galas, interesting contests, festivals and more that benefit communities across the state. VolunteerMatch.org provides a good resource for finding some of them.Eric dives into some unique Wisconsin workouts and ways to get in better shape for 2024(hey, he tries every year) and some of those workouts include yoga with goats or alpacas - oddly soothing for some reason; curling and ice skating in winter; pole fitness; bungee workouts at places like Swoop; TRX and cycle workouts at places like CycleBar, Spire, and Barre Code; and unique spots like Bounce Trampoline at Hometown Pilates in Fitchburg, which combines dance, music and bounce for a full cardio workout, and also helps with balance and coordination and studies have shown bounce is good for lymph circulation. More fun than your usual regular run or some sit-ups!Jake discusses food as part of his resolution, and covers examples of places around the state where you can eat healthier. Places around the state are now offering fresher and healthier grab-and-go meals and you can find them at markets like The Farmacy in Green Bay, co-ops like Willy Street in Madison, People's Co-Op in La Crosse, and Outpost Natural Foods, which has multiple locations around Milwaukee, and more. Farmers markets have greatly multiplied in number across the state where you can get fresh-grown food from area farms, bakers, and more; they're often a great way to kick off your weekend. Many of these markets take place in the warmer months, but more and more communities have winter markets indoors. Jake also drops some favorites across the state, including Downtown Grocery in Wausau; Thai Basil in Madison; Subhouse in Hudson, and Island Cafe in Minocqua, where you'll find a Mediterranean menu amidst an area primarily known for pub food and fish fries in the great North Woods. He provides a nice blueprint for places that offer that combination of tasty cuisine and better nutrition many of us want.Hope your New Year's resolutions work well and you have a happy, healthy 2024!   Inside Sponsors:Jefferson County: https://bit.ly/3gt0Nau

Everyone knows what herbs are and what we use them for on a daily basis but these wonderful plants have more to them than just their flavoring properties. We spoke with Lauren Dorminey, the creator of Wild Herbs of Iolita (https://www.instagram.com/wild.herbs.of.iolita/), about how she uses herbs and some of the lesser-known things about a few of them. Wild Herbs of Iolita Lauren, who considers herself an herbalist and a forager, began her company a few years ago after beginning to work with herbs and foraging for local wild plants to use in her products. The name came a little later after she looked into her ancestry where she found the first recorded female ancestor in her family named Prudence Iolita Littleheart. Iolita was a member of the Cherokee and as such Lauren knew that local herbs and other flora would have played a larger role in the day-to-day lives of Iolita's people. In that knowledge she found a deeper connection to her foreberrer and decided to honor her with the name. In the early days of her business Lauren began looking into herbs and other plants that could be burned for their aromatic and cleansing properties, be it in a spiritual or medicinal application. She would go out into the local forests, forage for wild herbs and flowers, then bundle them together with cedars and other hardwoods along with sage. These bundles then could be burned for their beautiful aromas. Soon, the directions of her business blossomed into other areas and she began to make teas and tinctures from the local flora around her. At times she found that she needed other ingredients for her various products and began growing a greater variety of herbs, like lavender and sage, in her garden. Lauren has even found a way to take the painful stinging nettle and use it for its natural properties; taking this ‘nuisance' plant and turning it into a ‘beneficial' herb. Herbs According to Wikipedia, herbs, in general, use, are “plants with savory or aromatic properties that are used for flavoring and garnishing food, for medicinal purposes, or for fragrances; excluding vegetables and other plants consumed for macronutrients.'' Interestingly, the world's largest herb is the banana plant.  We went over a few selections of the herbs we carry and asked Lauren to give us a little more insight on them and any alternate uses for them. Bouquet Dill The Bouquet Dill is the most popular variety that we carry. This plant will get to be about 30 inches tall with a 45-day maturity and grows well in zones 3 - 9. Dill is most famously used as a flavoring ingredient in the pickling process for dill pickles. Lauren also uses the clusters of little yellow flowers in her bouquets. It also has been used to treat stomach issues, headaches, boils, and helps with babies that have excess gas. Basil We carry several varieties of basil with Italian Basil, Thai Basil, Lemon Basil, and Genovese Basil are just a few. Italian Basil, like most basil varieties, is known to have poor germination. It is typically recommended to sow several seeds and then when needed. This variety will reach 24 - 30 inches tall and does well in containers. Basil is mostly used in cooking with the food it is included in typically considered “comfort food”. This is with good reason as basils are known to have antidepressant properties as well as antiseptic, among others. Thai Basil is excellent for cooking due to its high heat properties. Like its Italian cousin, it has antidepressant qualities and can help stabilize your mood. Lemon Basil has a lemony taste to it, hence the name, and Lauren says it goes well in a cocktail or with cucumber. Genovese Basil is highly aromatic and goes well on pizzas, in pestos, and other sauces. Thyme Thyme does well in zones 5 - 9 and will reach 6 - 12 inches tall. Lauren notes that bees love thyme and the plant will bring beneficial insects to your garden. She likes to take thyme and infuse it into honey to giv...

S1E57 - The Bruery's Trade Winds Belgian Tripel Ale

The Two Minute Beer Review

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 27, 2019 2:58

Episode Notes It’s the Two Minute Beer Review!I’m Andrew Burkum and it’s that time of the week again where we pick a bottle from that massive craft brew aisle hoping to find a hidden treasure. This week we’re going to take a look at Trade Winds Belgian Style Tripel Ale from The Bruery in Placentia CA. Will these winds blow us toward our fortune? Let’s find out!Trade winds pours a hazy golden color like a classic Belgian should. It smells like a bit of dried fruit with maybe just a bit of menthol in the background? There’s a strange pungency there that for the life of me I just cannot place. It’s a scent profile that’s not out of line with what I would expect from a Belgian, but it is incredibly strong. But what about the taste? I can only say that it’s kind of a pedestrian Belgian ale. The label claims that the beer is brewed with Thai Basil and rice but I just can’t see any of that in the beer’s flavor. What I do get is a tremendous amount of that banana clove flavor that’s traditional for a Belgian. It begs for some bitterness that it just never gets. I am sure there are Belgian die-hards out there that would drink this and totally love it, but for me—admittedly not a fan of the style as I have said before—this beer is almost completely impenetrable. I really want to like it but I simply cannot find anything in there that’s for me, other than the 8.5% Alcohol by Volume. Take all that with as many grains of salt as you’d like, but I just can’t recommend Trade Winds. Well that’s all for this week, but I hope you’ll join me next week as I take a look at Buck Hazy Double IPA by Dust Bowl Brewing in Turlock, CA. Will this one make us say Hee Haw? We’ll find out next week! Look for links to this week’s beer and brewery in the show notes. Don’t forget to let me know what you’re drinking and what you’re thinking about the show. Traveling, packing, car shopping...It's all the same. We think we know what we want until we get to the “destination” and get presented with multiple options. Maybe we should be a little more intentional about what we need to accomplish. Are we overpacking our suitcases and over accessorizing our vehicles? The goal in a car is to get from point A to point B safely, right? Do we really need a good sound system and heated seats? If the goal of wearing clothes is to not be naked, do we really need to pack 10 swimsuits and multiple outfits? Today we discuss being "Fully Loaded" with a fully loaded beverage.
