Learn about the surprising origins of Pollyanna's award‑winning Lexical Gap IPA, freeze‑distilled Eisbocks, and Snickers‑inspired pastry stout.Brian Pawola, co‑founder, head brewer, and distiller at Pollyanna Brewing Company, shares the story behind Pollyanna's most unique beers. In particular, he discusses the freeze distilling involved in crafting their Jötunheimr Eisbock Lager, the reluctance behind creating the award-winning Lexical Gap West Coast IPA, and what goes into creating their Dr. Pangloss Black IPA. He also discusses his German brewing education and his approach to balancing bitterness in high‑ABV beers. After the beer break, Brian shares some of Pollyanna's Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Toasted Marshmallow Fun Size pastry stout with peanut, coconut, vanilla bean, sea salt adjuncts, while sharing his thoughts on how to brew with lactose appropriately. Then, he discusses Pollyanna's expansion into distilling, the difference between brewing and distilling, and how much overlap there is between beer drinkers and consumers of spirits. Plus: why whiskey comes out clear from the barrel, where the color of bourbon comes from, and why roasting coffee is the next logical step in Pollyanna's evolution.Learn more about Pollyanna Brewing Company and its three locations in Lemont, St. Charles, and Roselle on their website at https://pollyannabrewing.com/ —You can learn more about Crafty Brewers and get in touch with us on our official website, https://craftybrewerspod.com Crafty Brewers is a production of Quantum Podcasts, LLC.

This might be a podcast-first: seven custom-designed and printed glasses just for this episode. Glassware is arguably the most important element of craft beer as it's the actual vessel through which we get to experience it, yet it rarely obtains the shine it so glaringly deserves. Tonight, we fix that. Dan of Zenan, the largest glassware company in Canada, and Adin of Henderson Brewing, join Cee and Nate to chat about the importance of glassware across the board, Zenan's decorating capabilities, how they work closely with the craft brewing industry to get them what they need (even in a tight turnaround), the importance of relationships with breweries and suppliers, the different types of printing on glassware, why different glasses work with specific beer styles, festival glassware, the upcoming Henderson "Toronto In 100 Beers" book, and why there aren't as many "flagship" glasses these days. They get into some gems from Henderson, in the custom-made BAOS glassware (thanks to Dan!): Rush Canadian Light Lager, The Amazing Randi Hazy Pale Ale (Ides 99), Radicle Hopfenweisse, Rube Goldbeer Belgian Tripel, Stock Ale (Ides 100), X-1 (Rush Xanabrew II) Belgian-Style Black Ale, and Best Amber Ale. This was spectacular - cheers!   BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads

Hendrick Verspecht Hendrick Verspecht from cuVer Brewing Co. is our guest on Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and with Peter Lopez sitting in for Herlinda Heras today. Hendrick's first time on Brew Ha Ha was this episode of September 16, 2021, just before cuVer opened. He was also on BHH on May 5, 2022. Now they are preparing to celebrate their second anniversary, on October 7, 2023. They begin by tasting the award-winning cuVer signature Pepperwood Saison Ale. Peter is a busy entrepreneur who runs Juncture Taproom and is a partner in Santa Rosa Pizzeria. Today he has brought some sandwiches from Santa Rosa Pizzeria. They are all named after something iconic in Santa Rosa. This panino is called Taylor Mountain. Another is Pierre's French Dip. cuVer is pronounced “koo-VAy.” Cuver is the root of the past participle cuvée, which means Ferment. When the Cushing family and the Verspecht family formed the partnership, they took the first letters of their two names and made cuVer. Hendrick tells that the French expresson “cuver son vin” literally means to ferment one's wine, but idiomatically it means to sleep off a hangover. The Pepperwood Saison Ale was the first recipe that Hendrick ever made. It is a Belgian farmhouse ale flavored with California Bay Laurel and Meyer lemon peel. Those are ingredients are not available in Belgium so this is a real California Belgian version. cuVer Second Anniversary: October 7 cuVer will be celebrating their second anniversary on October 7, 2023. Peter Lopez' restaurant was one of their first customers. The anniversary celebration will feature a food truck, Lila's Streetside Eats, and will go from 12 noon to 8 pm on October 7. They will also have a darts and cornhole tournament. They have a darts league every Tuesday night. The party will feature a competition where you can play to win cuVer merch. They are located in Windsor at 7704 Bell Road. They are down the street from Barley and Bine. They are closed Monday and Wednesday. The other days, Tuesday and Thursday open from 5-8pm, Friday and Saturday 12 noon to 8pm and Sunday from 1-6pm. The next beer they taste is a Belgian quadruple, which is even stronger then the Belgian Tripel. Hendrick tells the story of how his father wanted Belgian beers after they moved to California, and he started home brewing, for themselves as much as for others. Hendrick also gives credit to Anderson Valley Brewing and North Coast Brewing and Russian River Brewing Co., who also make Belgian styles.

Their releases have really run the spectrum of brewing possibilities. Purely selfish reasons is their take on a Belgian Tripel. This is The Beer Is Fundamentals Show and we want to welcome you once again to the NeighBeerHood where craft beer is always the talk of the town. You have probably had the Belgian Tripel and may not know the key ingredients to making such an amazing beer. You may also be one of the many who mispronounce it. Tripel is a beer full of ester aromas and flavors. So much so that the esters primarily define the style. Tripels are also not three times anything. Confusing that fact, there is another Belgian style of beer called a dubbel, which is pronounced like double. We have a great discussion on this while drinking the The WAY Tripel by Bold Monk out of Atlanta. We also discuss some of the great beer festivals happening around the country. Make sure to check out our previous episode. Remember, we will always focus on craft beer more than anything else. We believe that craft beer should be inclusive to all. The craft beer community is an important one and we want to see craft beer continue to grow. Cheers!

This week Bob and I talk about the upcoming Ashland Alefest which takes place on 6/18. We also discuss a report stating that the craft beer industry's growth has slowed and that in an industry that sees over 100 Billion in sales annually that Craft beer sales only makes up 27% of that number. The article from the Star Tribune late points out that breweries should begin to focus on growing their brand rather than their facilities or geographical footprint. Our final opening topic covers the apparent popularity of lagers within local breweries. In a report from the Wall Street journal the claim is made that smaller breweries are no longer afraid to add lagers to their portfolio due to recognition that this style of beer is popular amongst consumers. In the second half of the show Bob and I travel down to Paradigm Shift Brewery in Massilon, Ohio. We sat down with Mike Malinowski who is the owner, brewer, and pretty much anything you can imagine at Paradigm Shift. We sampled a Kolsch, a sour, an IPA and his GABF medal winning Belgian Tripel. How many Peets does it take to run a brewery? Kettlerock Brewing in Peachtree Corners, GA is a family affair.  When patriarch Stephen Peet retired in 2019 he figured the easiest way to relax was to build a brewery, and bring the whole crew with him.  Stephen and Sterling Peet joined us on the show this week with Diana, Christa, Taylor, and Devon Peet holding down the fort.  That's a lotta Peets. Stephen tells us the focus of the brewery is community, nature, and the environment.  He recalls a slow time and the brewery a a handful of guests sat apart in pairs but soon started chatting with each other, and that's exactly what he hopes Kettlerock fosters. When Sterling isn't brewing, he's a rocket scientist at Georgia Tech's Space Systems Design Laboratory.  He shares some of the projects they've worked on and tells us about CubeSats.  We asked if he's launched any yeast or grain into space and we're disappointed that he hasn't. The Peets were also founding members of the PC Mashers homebrew club.  If you've been  following the show for a while you may recall Jay as the winner of our Homebrewer of the Year in 2018.  Even though they've gone pro they still stay involved with the club. As we chat we get the story behind the Kettlerock name and each beer.  We talk about working with the whole family, and the cozy vibe at the taproom.  Those that think every new beer today is an IPA will be pleased that the taplist is pretty diverse with a Blonde Ale, Belgian Tripel, Kettle Sour, Seltzer, Wee Heavy, Milk Stout, and a couple of IPAs, of course. When you visit the brewery and order the Kettle Sour or Seltzer you'll get a basic, unflavored brew that you can add a flavored syrup to.  As we sampled the sour we realized how long it's been since we've seen one that didn't have fruit in it. Although their beer is only available at the taproom right now they've recently purchased a canning line and will have some available in the market soon.  Maybe we can talk Sterling into turning one of those cans into a CubeSat. She shares with us her first hand experience how schools, teachers implementing emergency remote learning as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic.  Schools are demonstrating many of the lessons for small businesses that we've learned on our Happy Hour Episodes Act fast and decisively - The school district had to come up with an initial plan in in about 4 hours for remote learning Be agile, flexible - teachers had to learn new technologies and new ways of teaching Be responsive to your key personas - The schools are in constant communication with students, parents and families Innovate for the future - The tools and processes developed for remote learning can be used when more normal school resumes   What we're drinking: Monkless Belgian Ales - Bend, OR Capitulation, Dry Hop Belgian Trippel, 8.1% ABV, 36 IBU "What do you do when customers say "I love hoppy beers"? Well, if you're any other brewery you might brew 6 different IPA's for them to choose from, but if you're Monkless, you capitulate, and dry hop your classic Belgian Tripel. We took one of our favorite beers, The Trinity, and dry hopped it to add a blast of flowery, citrusy hop aroma."   Brothers Cascadia Brewing - Vancouver, WA The Chromatic Series - Resonance, Batch #5, Sour Golden Ale, 6% ABV "3 pounds of peaches per gallon of beer. After a vigorous re-fermentation that consumed the sugars from the peach, we were left with massive amounts of peach flavor and a fun, complex acidity that lingers from the first whiff until long after it’s gone.”   Ghost Runners Brewery - Vancouver, WA Running Up Pils, Pilsner, 5% ABV, 28 IBU "Inspired by tradition, this German-style Pilsner is crafted with a mult-step infusion mash with old world pilsen malt. We then lager ferment over three different temperatures until the flavor profile is just right.  This light German Lager is packed full of flavor and is perfect accompaniment to the spring and summer. Cheers, and happy lawn mowing!"   Maryhill Winery - Goldendale, WA Pinot Gris "Rich nectarine and pear notes mingled with honey. Crisp fruit flavor is delivered at the front of the palate, while a slight creamy texture fills in the finish."   Episode Links: Wisconsin Jumps Around #BizOverBeerChallenge

Beer and Conversation with Pigweed and Crowhill

What does "cultural appropriation" add to our understanding of bad behavior? The boys discuss, but first they irrigate the mind meat with Peabody Heights' Unforgivable Curses -- a Belgian Tripel. It's quite the winter warmer. Pigweed explains what cultural appropriation really means, but Crowhill doesn't think it's explaining much. The worst thing about cultural appropriation is when it's applied to Halloween, where people are simply pretending. Quit being uptight about people being silly and having fun! Then the boys read an article from a genuine believer in cultural appropriation and try to dissect it.

Beer Barrels & Blockbusters

We go from the light elegance of the Belgian Tripel to this dark beast of a beer. This beer is jacked. No, really, that's what some people call freeze distillation, which is what makes an Eisbock an Eisbock. Episode Notes It’s the Two Minute Beer Review!I’m Andrew Burkum and it’s that time of the week again where we pick a bottle from that massive craft brew aisle hoping to find a hidden treasure. This week we’re going to take a look at Trade Winds Belgian Style Tripel Ale from The Bruery in Placentia CA. Will these winds blow us toward our fortune? Let’s find out!Trade winds pours a hazy golden color like a classic Belgian should. It smells like a bit of dried fruit with maybe just a bit of menthol in the background? There’s a strange pungency there that for the life of me I just cannot place. It’s a scent profile that’s not out of line with what I would expect from a Belgian, but it is incredibly strong. But what about the taste? I can only say that it’s kind of a pedestrian Belgian ale. The label claims that the beer is brewed with Thai Basil and rice but I just can’t see any of that in the beer’s flavor. What I do get is a tremendous amount of that banana clove flavor that’s traditional for a Belgian. It begs for some bitterness that it just never gets. I am sure there are Belgian die-hards out there that would drink this and totally love it, but for me—admittedly not a fan of the style as I have said before—this beer is almost completely impenetrable. I really want to like it but I simply cannot find anything in there that’s for me, other than the 8.5% Alcohol by Volume. Take all that with as many grains of salt as you’d like, but I just can’t recommend Trade Winds. Well that’s all for this week, but I hope you’ll join me next week as I take a look at Buck Hazy Double IPA by Dust Bowl Brewing in Turlock, CA. Will this one make us say Hee Haw? We’ll find out next week! Look for links to this week’s beer and brewery in the show notes. Don’t forget to let me know what you’re drinking and what you’re thinking about the show. Our fourth talk is with the Brewmasters, two people who've won lots of awards for creating some of some of the best craft beer to come out of Northern California.

O resultado você vê no vídeo!
