Get their EXCELLENT Beastie Boys Book and/or watch the Spike Jonze doc that comes out tomorrow. I might whip through some of their history in the video, but I'm not going to flesh it out here.* Beastie Boys are top 10 for me. Not in a revolving “these 50 bands could easily be my top 10” sense. Real no joke never out top 10. Here's why: 1. They kicked it off right when I was the age to most appreciate them. 2. They were funny from the get-go – serious about music but never too serious about themselves. 3. They're from NYC, a place I was in love with decades before I moved here. 4. They showed me that otherwise totally uncool white boys could rap if they wanted to. 5. They took hip hop to places it hadn't been, yet still respected its roots and the people who pioneered it. 6. They evolved. Musically. Professionally. Personally. They never quit growing and exploring. 7. They mixed it up. They were never content to stick to the boom bap, because they were too curious not to always find something else to weave into their sound. 8. They LOVE music of all kinds. Love and respect and revere and take the piss out of but still know what good listening means. 9. They were never quite what you thought they were. It's still quite hard for me to believe that Adam Yauch is dead, and has been for eight years. Like Prince or Bowie or Cobain or Lennon, the world doesn't seem right without them in it. It's like they're still here. Do I wish the other two Beasties would still make music? Hell yes! Do I understand why they don't and totally respect it? Hell yes! But it hurts not to look forward to their next release every few years. So what's so special about this 12”? First, it's the only thing of theirs I have on vinyl. Second, these songs were not hits in the USA, yet I liked them better than some of the hits from Licensed to Ill. Third, the B side was written by their compatriots and early tour mates, Run-D.M.C. And fourth, the style from Side A to Side B has a real past-present-future shift. “She's On It” has that Rick Rubin heavy metal/rap hybrid, while “Slow and Low” pairs a BOOMING 808 kick with what sound like live guitar band samples. It's more than the subtle shift it sounds like. A song like “Slow and Low” both pulled from the 808-heavy past, and presaged their cut and paste work on Paul's Boutique. *Side note: my partner and I were down at the site of Paul's Boutique in the “before days”, and there's a cool little Beasties tribute mural there.* When their first album came out, and subsequently 12” singles like this one here, my brother and my DJ-ing partner/friend learned the lyrics and rapped them at school dances over the instrumental tracks. I'm fairly sure I was Ad Rock, my bro was MCA, and my friend Mike S. was Mike D. We absorbed it so early on, that it became part of our DNA. You can hear that plain as day on a song like this: REC - "Let It Wreck Your Mind" (formerly "I Took One for Me" - from the album Syncopy for the Weird) Do you have any history with the Beasties? TURNING THE TABLES If you listened to the last episode of the podcast, you know that I shared some things that parents wished their kids’ middle school teachers knew. And I promised that this week I’d be turning the tables – which is exactly what’s happening today – I’m talking about 7 secrets middle school teachers wish parents knew. MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHERS BY THE NUMBERS Once your kids are out of elementary school, Parent/Teacher relationships can often seem confrontational. But they absolutely do not have to be. And with the statistics showing that 1 million teachers left the profession in 2018 alone - a recent Gallup poll shows that almost half of the teachers in the U.S. say they are actively looking for a different job now or watching for opportunities - I don’t know about you, but I want to do everything I can to encourage the people who are invested in pouring into the lives my hormone-infused lovelies. These two episodes are all about engaging and working to understand the person on the other side of the desk from you. Because the more aligned you are, the better it is for your child or student. So scoot a little closer and listen up. It’s time to lean in. Here we go. MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHERS WISH PARENTS KNEW . . . 1. They are professional jugglers. Along with actual teaching – classroom instruction, assessment, behavior management – teachers are also responsible for attending meetings [Think everything from whole staff meetings, to subject area department meetings, parent conferences, special need accommodation meetings, committee meetings for initiatives like character education, professional development meetings, and staff teambuilding meetings prepping – lesson plans, materials for class nurturing relationships with students – remembering/recording info, asking questions, listening documenting parent, student, admin interactions communicating - with other teachers about students, with parents, with administration, with counselors, with the librarian, with the tech specialist 2. They LOVE your children. No, seriously. LOVE them. Okay, all my middle school teachers in the house – put you hands up if you’ve ever heard something along the lines of  “OMG, bless you – I could NEVER teach that age group” or “How can you STAND it?” Sound familiar? Middle school teachers may laugh at the “You must be crazy to teach this age group” comments that they hear as soon as they mention what they do for a living, but deep down, they’re thinking, “If you only knew how great these kids are.” And they mean it! Even when they’re ready to pull their hair out, most middle school teachers came into their classrooms with a passion for kids are this age, going through all the significant development that happens between 12 and 14. 3. They want to impact your child’s life in significant, positive ways – both academically and developmentally. Remember Richard Dreyfuss as Mr. Holland in Mr. Holland’s Opus? Yeah, that’s pretty much every teacher’s dream – to create such an impact that students from decades ago remember the difference you made in their lives. Middle school teachers know that they’re seeing the beginning of the journey for these kids, and the possibilities are limitless. That they are part of building knowledge and character and life skills into these personalities at a pivotal time, when kids are starting to experiment and figure out who they are – and who they’re not. 4. The messaging they get from the school district about parents is often, well, kind of disconcerting. In many cases, the training teaches receive has a litigious flavor – and this is legitimate, because we live in a time when lawsuits are rampant, and educators are often presumed guilty until proven innocent. For newer teachers, especially ones without kids, at best it can make parents seem scary, and to be avoided. At worst, it can cultivate an attitude of cynicism and disdain. It takes a lot of gumption, again, especially for newer teachers, to keep an open door policy and invite parents into a healthy relationship. Plus, the thought of adding another task to their to-do list can be soooo overwhelming – because you’re one of 150 sets of parents. Do the math there – communicating with that many people individually isn’t feasible when you look at a teacher’s list of daily responsibilities. And if it is, the ones they want to do that with are their actual students. Which leads me to the next point, which is: 5. They yearn to know all their students as individuals. And lots of times they feel inadequate to the task. Especially when they miss something. (Share story from last week’s email.) Parents, this is a hard one. 150 students is a lot. And unfortunately, we are going to miss things. Please have grace when it’s you’re child we’ve missed, and work with us to bring us up to speed. 6. They want to be a team Teachers know that parent involvement is a key factor in student success. They know, just like you do, that there’s accountability when there’s good communication between school and home.  Again, with the number of students they have, it’s easier than we wish it was for something to fall through the cracks. Rather than assuming that your child’s teachers will “figure it out” or that something isn’t that important, staying in touch with teachers and counselors is the best way to assure that your child is fully supported in all their environments. 7. They appreciate being seen. It’s easy for middle school teachers to feel either invisible or attacked. Mostly, because as the saying goes, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. When all you hear is negative feedback, it’s easy to get discouraged. Now, it’s been several years since I’ve been in the classroom, but I will share that each year, I got many thoughtful gifts – Christmas ornaments, gift cards, jewelry. You know what I go back to to this day? The notes that parents and students wrote me. Seriously. They STILL give me warm fuzzies. SO WHAT? As a parent of a middle schooler, you might be asking, “yeah, but what does this mean for me?” Glad you asked! Here are some practical ideas for how to engage with your child’s teachers in a supportive way: Be respectful of their time. What does this look like? Giving at least 24 hours for responses to emails; scheduling times to conference by phone or in person. Listen carefully to what your kids share about their teachers – and add a dollop of grace. Because your kids also talk about you in their classrooms. And, as I used to say on Meet the Teacher nights, sometimes the best strategy is “I’ll believe half of what I hear about you, if you’ll believe half of what you hear about me.” Of course, I say that tongue in cheek, but given that it’s developmentally appropriate for middle schoolers to be a tad dramatic and self-focused, it’s actually a good rule of thumb. Offer to help teachers with mundane clerical tasks like making copies, decorating bulletin boards, or organizing classroom supplies. Figure out the best way to do this, whether it’s volunteering through the PTA or communicating directly with individual teachers. Attend meet the teacher/curriculum night and introduce yourself to your child’s teachers. If teachers ask you to fill out any “tell me about your child” forms, be sure to fill them out, and thank them for trying to get to know their students more personally. Let teachers know when there’s been a significant life change or issue that might affect your child in the classroom. Assume the best about the teacher you kid complains about. Ask good questions like, “Help me understand what led up to that incident,” or “How much time did you have for that assignment?” or “What kind of resources did the teacher provide for this?” Affirm your child’s feelings, and go deeper to figure out the facts. Support your child’s middle school teachers with encouraging notes and emails. Often, it can feel like the only messages middle school teachers get from parents are ones of concern, complaint, or criticism. [Story about Jessica Hainey’s mom in team meeting] Take an extra minute to send your child’s middle school teacher a note that expresses appreciation or shares how much your child is learning or what they’re enjoying in the class. I’ve included a Swipe File of notes to teachers in my show notes, templates that you can personalize and use to send to your kids’ teachers. Parents. Middle school teachers are often just as wary of you as you are of them – and often, hearing from a parent signals confrontation. By supporting your children’s middle school teachers, you’ll go a long way in creating the best learning environment for your students. Because I guarantee you, when a parent gets involved, students are place right in the middle of a teachers’ radar, which is a good thing. Working with teachers to support them, keeping an open line of communication between school and home, and assuming the best about teachers, first, all go a long way in cultivating a positive teacher-parent relationship and a supportive learning environment for your child.

http://bizwomenrock.com/275-2   7 Habits That Will Skyrocket Your Success in 2017!   “We are what we repeatedly do.  Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” ~ Aristotle   I love the New Year.  Fresh start.  New ideas.  New visions.  New resolutions.     But what’s missing from the onslaught of resolutions that are created right now is the REAL STUFF...the glue...the daily habits that easily give us access to the things we want!   Here are 7 simple habits that will completely skyrocket your success this year!   Get Up Early   If you would have told me last year that I would be waking up at 5am every morning, I would have thought you were nuts.  But here I am...an early riser.  There is a reason that most of the world’s most successful people get their day started before the sun rises.  The mornings are a great time to get the necessary alone time you need to set your intentions for the day, to get your head clear about where you want to put your energy and to take the time to care for yourself.  Once the world starts moving around you, these things become significantly harder to do.  Is it possible to do this at night (if you’re a night owl?).  Of course it is, but as a person who has gone from a late-night person to an early morning riser, I can tell you first hand that the massive difference is in the freshness of your mind (so much creativity happens in the quiet, fresh mind of the mornings!) and the lightness of the day ahead (you don’t have the weight of a full day on your back).  Getting up early has proved to be one of the most productive things I’ve done for my life and my business.   Be Grateful   I’m not just talking about saying thank you’s, I’m talking about creating a daily practice of gratitude.  Writing down what you’re grateful for.  Every.  Single.  Day.  The more you focus on what you have and what you’re grateful for, the more of those things will come into your life.  My daily gratitude habit is writing down what I’m grateful for in my gratitude journal.  Every day I write whatever comes to mind that I feel particularly grateful for and end the exercise with 2 or 3 things I’m committed to.  Like “I’m committed to staying positive,” or “I’m committed to being kind.” This is the very first thing I do in the mornings and it sets the tone for my entire day!     Journal With a Purpose   I have always been a lover of journaling, but in 2016, I learned the art of PURPOSEFUL JOURNALING.  Which basically means that I am journaling in a specific way in order to live the ideal life I want.  I am creating the life I want through the journaling process!  In the past, my journaling had been merely an account of what was going on in my life and any accompanying thoughts or emotions I had about those events.  While it was cathartic, it wasn’t productive.     But journaling with a purpose opens the doors for all sorts of incredible things to happen!  While there are an endless stream of writing prompts and journaling exercises that lend themselves to purposeful journaling, here are just a few that you can use… Write a money statement.  It usually looks something like this: I am so happy and grateful that I received $10,000 into [insert your business name here] today! Money comes to me easily and daily!  This is more of a declaration than anything.  You are telling the universe you are open for business and ready to receive income.  Lining this statement with gratitude and a belief that money is easy to make anchors this in you every single day!   Write statement after statement about your ideal life as if it’s already happening.  This may be surprisingly difficult at first, but I promise it gets easier (and VERY fun to do!).  This may look something like this… I have a waiting list of my dream clients My VIP days are booked out for the entire year I easily pay my bills at the beginning of the month I love to work out every single day I am fit and healthy I easily exceed my financial goals every single month My education programs sell out every time My daughter and I have a group of moms that we do weekly activities with Write down your visions.  Anytime you have an idea, thought or vision about your business (or your life in general), WRITE IT DOWN!  Write out every single thing that you possibly can.  No filtering.  No editing.  Just get it out.  You will be amazed at how damn productive this is!  All of a sudden, you’ll have a reservoir of content to pull from, a treasure chest of targeted ideas on where you want your business to go next, an incredibly clear mission statement!   Check in With Your Success Team Regularly   Every week, two weeks, or month, check in with the awesome people who are part of your success team.  Who makes up your success team?   Your Coach. This person is a part of your success team because they force you to think BIGGER, to expand your mind to things you didn’t even know were possible.  They help you come up with practical strategies on how to achieve what you want and create solutions to challenges you’re facing.  Meeting with your coach on a regular basis forces you to stay on-point with the larger direction of your business.  I have coaching clients who meet with me every single week, some who meet every other week and some who meet once each month.  And I meet with my coach every other week.   Your Accountability Partner. Your accountability partner is a fellow biz woman who keeps you honest.  Setting up agreed-upon rules of how you two check in with one another will hold your feet to the fire (because you don’t want to look like a flake, do you? Sometimes peer pressure is good!).  My accountability partner and I meet once/month to set up the month and then email each other an update every single week.   Close friends for brainstorming and venting. Outside of the two above, more “structured” relationships, your success team can include a few people close to you who you can trust with ideas, creative thoughts, doubts and even negative thoughts.  There is immense value in this safe space because the practice of speaking things out with these close friends can help you see solutions, new ideas and give you great feedback!  My sister, my husband (selectively) and a few close girlfriends fulfill this for me!   Your brand ambassadors.  Your brand ambassadors are the most loyal members of your community.  They LOVE you adore the work you do.  Keeping a close relationship with your brand ambassadors allows you quick access to the heartbeat of those you serve.  Call upon them when you’re feeling doubtful (“Hey, Jane...if I did something like this, would you find value in that?”) and anytime you’re feeling low and need a reminder of how much of an impact you ARE making (hint: ask for testimonials from them and you’ll get all the positive confirmation you need!)!   Exercise   Your physiology is directly connected to your psychology.  Your body, mind and spirit are intertwined and you can bet that hitting your peak performance stride has to include your physical well being.  I am not here to be a workout guru...only to reinforce the facts that when your body is healthy, it positively impacts everything else in your life!  But let me give you some real examples of how you can use exercise to directly benefit your business. Exercise when you feel stuck.  I use this trick a lot.  Anytime I’m working and start to feel myself getting frustrated for whatever reason, I get up out of my desk and move.  If I haven’t done my workout for the day, I’ll take 30 minutes and do it then.  If I have, I’ll take 20 minutes and walk around the neighborhood.  This act always - 100% of the time - gets me back in front of my computer and kicking butt in a super focused and productive way! Schedule your daily workouts (put it on your calendar) and schedule it for the same time every day.  Just like every habit, it is imperative that you regulate this activity!  And the best way to ensure that you make exercise a habit is to schedule it in your calendar at an optimal time (when you’re most likely to actually do it) and then just stick to your schedule.  A great trick I use whenever I get out of this habit (which I do), is to commit to working out at the same time for 7 days.  Usually by then, I’ll be back into the routine!  And remember to change your schedule should your ideal workout times shift!  The ideal time for you to exercise every day is when you’ll actually do it - day in and day out!  I typically work out during my daughter’s morning nap around 9am.   Proactively create the schedule you want   As I just alluded to in the description about scheduling your workouts, scheduling your life is a phenomenal way to create the life you want!  It takes some practice, but when executed, this habit will force you to shift from “I’m floating down the river of life, going wherever the current takes me,” to “I’m building my own damn boat with a motor to go where I want, when I want!”  It’s a pretty massive paradigm shift.  Here are 5 simple steps to mastering your schedule: Write a list of all the regular activities you do on a weekly basis. Group them into categories (admin, content creation, business planning, etc.) Think about when you work best.  Match your energy with your work. Look at a 7 day week on a blank calendar and start blocking out the ideal times for these categories. Implement for one week. Adjust as necessary   From 5am-7am every morning, I have time blocked in my schedule called JOURNAL & CONTENT CREATION because I fell in love with habits #1 & #2 and I realized after a week of journaling that it got my creative juices flowing like crazy!  Every Thursday from 4pm-5pm, my husband and I have a FINANCIAL FREEDOM meeting where we brainstorm, strategize and take action on our financial freedom plan!  These items are scheduled in my calendar and thus, create the habit of putting attention onto the important things in my life! Laugh a lot!   My husband calls me “intense.”  Yes, I am boisterous and happy and adventurous, but I can definitely get into intense, focused moods.  And when I do, I know I need to add some laughter in order to become the best version of me again.  And I love being a goofball!  Having a kid helps habitualize laughter because hearing their laughter come back at you is the best sound ever!  For example, every morning, I dance with Sedona in the kitchen.  While she’s eating her breakfast, I turn up the dance music and jump around like a crazy person.  She LOVES it and we laugh our heads off!  How the hell can I have a bad day if it starts off like that?? :)  Do whatever you can to have laughter in your life!  Hang out with funny friends, go watch funny movies...stare at yourself in the mirror and belly laugh like nobody's watching! (yes, I’ve done this and yes it works!).  The more you laugh, the more you realize that any of the stresses you may have are just temporary and that everything is totally awesome the way it is. Do you already practice these 7 habits?  Some of them?  Need to tighten up on a few of them?  Here’s my recommendation: Commit to any ONE of these for just 7 DAYS and follow through with it.  See how it fits.  Tweak it so it works best for you.  Rinse and repeat. Roobal, rubble, potayto, potarto, makes no difference. All shops take Rubles. The coin system is too much extra effort. There are five different types of notes and six different coins. It’s worth noting that most businesses in Russia pay in Rubles or Euros.Theres’ the 10 and 50 kopek coins (which you can’t buy anything with.) Then there’s the 1, 2 and 5 Ruble coins (which you can’t buy anything with.) From 10 Rubles onwards it becomes interesting. There’s a 10 Ruble coin and note.Russians love their loose change. They LOVE it. So much so that you are often asked by the person at the checkout counter for their loose change. “Do you have 99 roubles?” “No… why would I if I gave you a 100 Ruble note?”Bizarre. I’m rubbing my hands together as I type (if that’s physically possible) with gems to share with you from Russia’s depths.Bizarre items... Fish being clubbed to death… ah, it’s a writer’s dream in there! A live fish tank... Isles and isles of frozen food that isn't covered up... Birds in the isles ... Tellers who ask you for more loose change...The list goes on. While it's great that majority of  shops are 24 hrs, Alcohol is only available until 10pm. I'm told it's to stop the alcoholics. Surely, if you're an alcoholic, wouldn't you also be drinking during the day?There are some exceptions that sell alcohol until 11pm on certain days (eg; Azbooka Vekoosa – kind of the M&S/Morrisons of Russia as at this store you find most foreign produce, but it is a tad pricier.) The service can't really be discussed as there isn't any. Asking for help or paying with a large note can get you shouted at, or dirty looks, depends on what the person had for breakfast that morning.The bakery isn't much to write home about; while they do have some tasty jam-tart like cookies, the baking seems more conservative and not as fat-filled as the European standard. That's to say if you want a good Victoria sponge or a scone you have a snowball's chance in hell.Milk is called Moloko. For the life of me I can't figure out which one is full cream (as they have 0,1% up to 5%. Where's 100%?)Dangerous to the sweet-toothed; condensed milk comes in a sealable sachet. Yum yum!The salmon comes in cheap and plentiful. Caviar comes standard. It's decently priced and often served with pancakes or sushi.Russians are consider the largest tea drinkers in the world (google it).Coffee is expensive.
