I've been on a mission to help solopreneurs cut through friction—especially when it comes to using AI. And one major pain point? Staring at a blinking cursor, not knowing what to ask ChatGPT. If you've ever wasted time retyping prompts, getting inconsistent results, or forgetting what worked last time, this one's for you.I finally built an AI swipe file—a collection of reusable prompts, templates, and context that lets me get better, faster results from tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini. In this episode, I break down how I'm using AI right now, what's in my swipe file, how it saves me time, and which tools I use to manage everything. I also shared some prompts from listeners about how projects in ChatGPT are starting to replace parts of my swipe file.If you've been meaning to get more consistent with your AI usage—or want to avoid typing the same prompt for the 100th time—this is your sign to start a swipe file.Top TakeawaysA swipe file isn't just for copywriters—it's a game-changer for AI. Think of it as SOPs for your AI tools: reusable prompts, saved context, and examples that give you consistent results without starting from scratch.ChatGPT Projects are starting to replace some of my swipe file needs by storing persistent context and instructions—great for repeatable tasks like show descriptions and editing guidance.AI is here to assist, not replace. I get a lot of questions (especially from non-techie people) on how I make money from what I do, specifically copywriting stuff. The good part about making money from the internet is there's multiple ways to monetize something. So while most of my income comes from selling a subscription to The Copywriting Course, my training program for writers, there's roughly 8 different income streams surrounding my copywriting content. Here's the way each revenue steam works: #1.) Copywriting Course Subscriptions: It sells a https://copywritingcourse.com/join (membership course) that trains people to become better writers with a focus on selling. Small businesses buy this to learn how to write better company, companies buy it for their employees to teach them to write better copy. If people want help on their copy, they post it here, and myself and writers go through it and change it up for them. Then on Thursdays we get on an Office Hours call and take up to 8 questions from members, and re-do copy or talk strategy live on the call. So the Copywriting Course is a combination training and community…and we sell monthly and yearly subscriptions to it. #2.) Swipe File: A swipe file is a collection of good marketing materials you like or can learn from. Years ago I started building my own swipe file on a desktop folder. Also a phone folder. But then when I wanted to recall something like Pricing structures, I'd have to sift through the whole damn thing. So I created SwipeFile.com, where the whole world could access my private swipe file. I wanted to SwipeFile to be an independent site, and not necessarily related to Copywriting Course. The way it makes money is it has Google Adsense ads on it, and when someone clicks an ad, I get a portion of that revenue. Swipe File makes money and pays for itself, but the main goal of it is to build the worlds best swipe file. #3.) Book: I self published a book called https://www.amazon.com/This-book-teach-write-better/dp/0989895300/ (This Book Will Teach You To Write Better). it sells on Amazon. I originally tried to make it free, but with Amazon I have to charge some money. I made it $5, and it was designed to be a readable-in-30 minutes crash course on writing copy. Till this day it still sells and has hundreds of reviews. I will say, of any form of income I make from the copywriting world, this book is the most “PASSIVE” of them all. I published it a few years ago, and have done NOTHING since. It just naturally sells on the Amazon platform, and still keeps going to this day. Honestly if I wanted to boost my passive income, I'd re-do this book and boost the price to $20/pop. #4.) 1-on-1 Consulting (aka, actually doing copywriting)! Before I started copywriting course people would ask for help with their email newsletters, and I'd charge them by the hour, sometimes by the project depending on the client. I would help people re-write things on the spot, which is honestly very rewarding in many ways: I got to see insider numbers of different companies, hear what methods work and don't work for them, get to meet really cool people, and they pay me money. All around it's pretty awesome. If all I did was https://copywritingcourse.com/work/ (consult), that would make a pretty good living. I think the reason most people find other income streams though is if you ONLY consult, your time becomes quite in demand, and your business can't function without you. In fact, YOU are the business. This is why finding other streams of income outside of just consulting is good. #5.) YouTube Channel: I post https://www.youtube.com/kopywriting (videos) about copywriting, people subscribe, and I get paid in two ways: 1.) People decide to buy our copywriting course training. So they signup for a subscription. -and- 2.) I get a percentage of ad revenue. Whenever people watch my videos, YouTube will show advertisements, and you get to share in a percentage of those. You can see all my...

If you see a decent landing page, you can save it for future reference. A great email campaign from your favourite brand? You guessed it - you can keep it for inspiration for later.

If you see a decent landing page, you can save it for future reference. A great email campaign from your favourite brand? You guessed it - you can keep it for inspiration for later. Every marketer needs a swipe file, a base of knowledge you can refer to when working on a campaign. Marketing can only be mastered by doing it - courses, guides and marketing degrees teach you certain things, but they don't give you practical knowledge. Plus, there's no need to reinvent the wheel for every landing page or email; instead, if you see something is working, save the idea, find out why it's working and apply the principles to your business & customers. Corey is the founder of SwipeFiles, community, courses, and content to master marketing curated in one place. He's a marketer, maker, and proud pug owner. Previously the Head of Growth at Baremetrics and first marketing hire at Cordial, Corey has consulted with dozens of startups on marketing and growth including SavvyCal, Evercast, Riverside, Holloway, Beamer, and Timetastic. Today’s episode is about the importance of swipe files. I will be explaining why you need your own personal swipe file, what to collect in it, and how to use it. For those of you who don’t know, swipe files are collections of saved examples which you might want to use in the future for reference as an inspiration, just like lawyers use go-bys. In marketing, you will have to write emails, webinars, sales pages, and so on. That means you will have to create, but it’ll be very difficult to begin on a blank page without knowing where to start. This is still true even if you know the theoretical rules of writing in marketing. I've personally used a copywriter’s page to get the inspiration for my first sales page. To create a swipe file, you should collect whatever speaks to you since that means it’s effective and worth keeping. Collecting is very simple; it includes things like screenshotting Facebook ads, copying and pasting text from emails, screen grabbing videos, and then saving those in a document for future access. Using swipe files is quite simple, but it is very important to note that they’re for inspiration and not for stealing, copying, or just swapping out words. So instead of starting on a blank slate, you’d be able to find frameworks, how people are coaching, how they’re converting a feature into a benefit, and much more. If you don’t have a swipe file already, I urge you to start one now. Start making copies of whatever files seem attractive to you and use them as a guide. Swipe away and you’ll be much closer to building a successful online business. When not to use swipe files for ads How using a swipe file lost me a client. Please don't make this mistake when creating copy / ads for Facebook, emails, Google - online or offline.
Continue Reading
We all have superpowers - the problem is that most of us don’t recognize them as such. We need others to point them out to us. This episode is about that - and it’s sparked by a conversation I was having with a friend just this week. He’s feeling down, like it’s hard for him to get himself into the game and I totally understand the feeling. I want you to hear what I shared with him because I think it’s powerful. If you can do this one thing you’ll equip yourself with the tools you need to pull yourself out of that slump every time it happens. Give yourself permission to feel down. On the other side of pain is tremendous power Before we get too far into this, I want you to understand something - nobody can be motivated and “up” all the time. Life simply isn’t that way. In spite of the impression we get from Instagram, nobody’s life is perfect and happy all the time. And here’s the good news - it’s OK to feel down. We need to learn how to let the pressure off of ourselves and quit expecting that we should be full of motivation and energy all the time and give ourselves permission to be down when the time comes. When we can do that - and work through the painful down time - we’ll find tremendous reserves of power available on the other side. Start with the 5 core elements you need as a human being One last thing before I tell you what I told my friend. As human beings we all need 5 core elements to be well adjusted and healthy. Too often we jump to radical things like therapy or fasting or a crazy eating plan when all we really need to do is focus on these 5 basics consistently. What are they? Water, sleep, movement, diet, and air. I spend a small portion of this episode explaining what I mean by each of those and why they are so important. If you take nothing else away from this podcast but can get yourself going in the right direction with these 5 things, you’ll be doing well. Do you know what a swipe file is? The concept of a swipe file comes from the famous copywriters who have made their money by fashioning headlines, marketing campaigns, and advertisements. They would pay attention to the other marketing and branding going on around them and keep examples of things that inspired them or that they thought were particularly brilliant. When they were ready to create their next piece of work, they would not start from scratch. They’d go to that swipe file and begin pursuing the ideas that had made them want to do great work themselves. Without fail, they’d find some ideas to put together that would serve as fuel for their current project. Keep that concept in mind as I reveal what I told my friend. He needs to create what I call a “superpower swipe file.” What the heck is a superpower swipe file? Along the lines of a traditional swipe file that any entrepreneur, writer, or business owner might create, you can and should create your own personal swipe file. It’s not for capturing great business ideas - it’s for capturing the great things that are said about you, your services, and your products. When people praise us, we need to do more than just say “thank you.” We need to pay attention. And if we are able to pay attention over time - by keeping the notes, emails., etc. - we’ll be able to encourage ourselves with the truth of what others have seen in us, on the spot, when we need it. My friends - please start your superpower swipe file today. Outline of This Episode [0:37] The reason I’m sharing this topic with you [1:23] The feeling of being stuck, being out of the game, without motivation [2:01] Give yourself permission to feel down [3:32] Nature is a tremendous resource for resetting your mood [4:55] 5 core elements everyone needs [8:08] Create a superpower swipe file [12:52] And about a business swipe file... I'm launching Gorgias' first vlog/podcast, called the Ecomm Swipe File! Each episode is a quick tactical tip that any merchant can implement in their store, about 2-5 minutes long. As a huge fan of podcasts, I don't love when they're super long. There are also a ton of long drawn out webinars that don't have any substance. Or they want to sell you a course on dropshipping. I'm hoping this will turn into a virtual mastermind of sorts, learning from some of the leading ecom brands, partners and agencies. So far we've recorded episodes with Jake Kassan from MVMT, Kara Goldin, CEO and Co-Founder of Hint Water, Eric Bandholz from Beardbrand
A swipe file is a complete game changer, whether you're just starting out or a seasoned content creator. But how do you stay in the inspiration zone and not end up copying? There's a whole world of brilliance happening around us every day but copying someone's work is a complete no-go zone, which is why your swipe file must be a starting point not a step by step guide. Here's how to use your swipe file without crossing that line.
It's tough to create something out of nothing, so a swipe file collection of content created by other people is a great reference to inspire your own content and marketing. But to use one effectively you need to set it up right. Find out how to set one up, create categories, find and save resources and stay organized with your swipe file.

TURNING THE TABLES If you listened to the last episode of the podcast, you know that I shared some things that parents wished their kids’ middle school teachers knew. And I promised that this week I’d be turning the tables – which is exactly what’s happening today – I’m talking about 7 secrets middle school teachers wish parents knew. MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHERS BY THE NUMBERS Once your kids are out of elementary school, Parent/Teacher relationships can often seem confrontational. But they absolutely do not have to be. And with the statistics showing that 1 million teachers left the profession in 2018 alone - a recent Gallup poll shows that almost half of the teachers in the U.S. say they are actively looking for a different job now or watching for opportunities - I don’t know about you, but I want to do everything I can to encourage the people who are invested in pouring into the lives my hormone-infused lovelies. These two episodes are all about engaging and working to understand the person on the other side of the desk from you. Because the more aligned you are, the better it is for your child or student. So scoot a little closer and listen up. It’s time to lean in. Here we go. MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHERS WISH PARENTS KNEW . . . 1. They are professional jugglers. Along with actual teaching – classroom instruction, assessment, behavior management – teachers are also responsible for attending meetings [Think everything from whole staff meetings, to subject area department meetings, parent conferences, special need accommodation meetings, committee meetings for initiatives like character education, professional development meetings, and staff teambuilding meetings prepping – lesson plans, materials for class nurturing relationships with students – remembering/recording info, asking questions, listening documenting parent, student, admin interactions communicating - with other teachers about students, with parents, with administration, with counselors, with the librarian, with the tech specialist 2. They LOVE your children. No, seriously. LOVE them. Okay, all my middle school teachers in the house – put you hands up if you’ve ever heard something along the lines of “OMG, bless you – I could NEVER teach that age group” or “How can you STAND it?” Sound familiar? Middle school teachers may laugh at the “You must be crazy to teach this age group” comments that they hear as soon as they mention what they do for a living, but deep down, they’re thinking, “If you only knew how great these kids are.” And they mean it! Even when they’re ready to pull their hair out, most middle school teachers came into their classrooms with a passion for kids are this age, going through all the significant development that happens between 12 and 14. 3. They want to impact your child’s life in significant, positive ways – both academically and developmentally. Remember Richard Dreyfuss as Mr. Holland in Mr. Holland’s Opus? Yeah, that’s pretty much every teacher’s dream – to create such an impact that students from decades ago remember the difference you made in their lives. Middle school teachers know that they’re seeing the beginning of the journey for these kids, and the possibilities are limitless. That they are part of building knowledge and character and life skills into these personalities at a pivotal time, when kids are starting to experiment and figure out who they are – and who they’re not. 4. The messaging they get from the school district about parents is often, well, kind of disconcerting. In many cases, the training teaches receive has a litigious flavor – and this is legitimate, because we live in a time when lawsuits are rampant, and educators are often presumed guilty until proven innocent. For newer teachers, especially ones without kids, at best it can make parents seem scary, and to be avoided. At worst, it can cultivate an attitude of cynicism and disdain. It takes a lot of gumption, again, especially for newer teachers, to keep an open door policy and invite parents into a healthy relationship. Plus, the thought of adding another task to their to-do list can be soooo overwhelming – because you’re one of 150 sets of parents. Do the math there – communicating with that many people individually isn’t feasible when you look at a teacher’s list of daily responsibilities. And if it is, the ones they want to do that with are their actual students. Which leads me to the next point, which is: 5. They yearn to know all their students as individuals. And lots of times they feel inadequate to the task. Especially when they miss something. (Share story from last week’s email.) Parents, this is a hard one. 150 students is a lot. And unfortunately, we are going to miss things. Please have grace when it’s you’re child we’ve missed, and work with us to bring us up to speed. 6. They want to be a team Teachers know that parent involvement is a key factor in student success. They know, just like you do, that there’s accountability when there’s good communication between school and home. Again, with the number of students they have, it’s easier than we wish it was for something to fall through the cracks. Rather than assuming that your child’s teachers will “figure it out” or that something isn’t that important, staying in touch with teachers and counselors is the best way to assure that your child is fully supported in all their environments. 7. They appreciate being seen. It’s easy for middle school teachers to feel either invisible or attacked. Mostly, because as the saying goes, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. When all you hear is negative feedback, it’s easy to get discouraged. Now, it’s been several years since I’ve been in the classroom, but I will share that each year, I got many thoughtful gifts – Christmas ornaments, gift cards, jewelry. You know what I go back to to this day? The notes that parents and students wrote me. Seriously. They STILL give me warm fuzzies. SO WHAT? As a parent of a middle schooler, you might be asking, “yeah, but what does this mean for me?” Glad you asked! Here are some practical ideas for how to engage with your child’s teachers in a supportive way: Be respectful of their time. What does this look like? Giving at least 24 hours for responses to emails; scheduling times to conference by phone or in person. Listen carefully to what your kids share about their teachers – and add a dollop of grace. Because your kids also talk about you in their classrooms. And, as I used to say on Meet the Teacher nights, sometimes the best strategy is “I’ll believe half of what I hear about you, if you’ll believe half of what you hear about me.” Of course, I say that tongue in cheek, but given that it’s developmentally appropriate for middle schoolers to be a tad dramatic and self-focused, it’s actually a good rule of thumb. Offer to help teachers with mundane clerical tasks like making copies, decorating bulletin boards, or organizing classroom supplies. Figure out the best way to do this, whether it’s volunteering through the PTA or communicating directly with individual teachers. Attend meet the teacher/curriculum night and introduce yourself to your child’s teachers. If teachers ask you to fill out any “tell me about your child” forms, be sure to fill them out, and thank them for trying to get to know their students more personally. Let teachers know when there’s been a significant life change or issue that might affect your child in the classroom. Assume the best about the teacher you kid complains about. Ask good questions like, “Help me understand what led up to that incident,” or “How much time did you have for that assignment?” or “What kind of resources did the teacher provide for this?” Affirm your child’s feelings, and go deeper to figure out the facts. Support your child’s middle school teachers with encouraging notes and emails. Often, it can feel like the only messages middle school teachers get from parents are ones of concern, complaint, or criticism. [Story about Jessica Hainey’s mom in team meeting] Take an extra minute to send your child’s middle school teacher a note that expresses appreciation or shares how much your child is learning or what they’re enjoying in the class. I’ve included a Swipe File of notes to teachers in my show notes, templates that you can personalize and use to send to your kids’ teachers. Parents. Middle school teachers are often just as wary of you as you are of them – and often, hearing from a parent signals confrontation. By supporting your children’s middle school teachers, you’ll go a long way in creating the best learning environment for your students. Because I guarantee you, when a parent gets involved, students are place right in the middle of a teachers’ radar, which is a good thing. Working with teachers to support them, keeping an open line of communication between school and home, and assuming the best about teachers, first, all go a long way in cultivating a positive teacher-parent relationship and a supportive learning environment for your child.

No longer confined to the copywriting and journalism industries, a swipe file can lead to new avenues of creative marketing in your eCommerce business. Starting, maintaining, and referring to a swipe file can be a fun process, and I explain 3 methods to consider on this episode of Marketing For eCommerce. I promise it’ll inspire you to leverage new ways of marketing, and if you start today you’ll reap the benefits today. Be sure to check out this episode! What is a swipe file and why do you need one? A swipe file is simply a collection of ideas and inspiration. The contents of your swipe file will vary, but most people have a collection of headlines, ads, emails, calls to action, photos, graphics, etc. Any time you read or see something that inspires you, draws emotion, or makes you want to buy a product, that’s a piece that can be added to your swipe file! After a few weeks, months, or even years of collecting and curating this information, you’ll have a treasure trove of info that spans industries and time periods. Then, when you’re thinking about a new campaign or marketing email, simply dip into the file and pull out examples that previously captured your attention. You can choose to house your swipe file digitally, in your email, or in print. Always remember that this file is meant for modeling, not copying, and that each piece should be appropriately modified for your business. Method #1 - Seek out and learn from your competitors The first method for building a swipe file involves identifying your direct and indirect competitors and simply watching what they do. Create a second email account (this will be your swipe account), and start subscribing to everything! People who are catering to your market will be sending out great content that can be then filed into categories such as introductory emails, upsells, etc. Whenever you want to send a creative new email, you’ll have 12 examples sitting in your email account, ready for review! It may seem counterintuitive, but it’s also immensely helpful to purchase your competitor’s products. By following their entire purchase journey, you can see critical steps of the process that aren’t immediately available to the public. It’ll be a useful investment and you’ll have an even better view inside your own market. Method #2 - Examine the Facebook “Info and Ads” tab The second method involves taking a look at the “Info and Ads” tab on Facebook. This new tab allows all Facebook users to view a Page’s active ads and campaigns. These insights can be leveraged in your swipe file! Check out the ads your competitors are running and see what’s working for them. Layout ideas, copy, color schemes, and more can all be added to your swipe file. Adapt those ideas for your eCommerce business and you’ll start seeing even greater digital marketing success. Method #3 - Take advantage of new verticals Finally, don’t be afraid to step out of your industry comfort zone. Businesses that are totally unrelated to eCommerce have fantastic videos, ads, and campaigns that may not be used in your industry. If you go to a completely unrelated vertical and research how they’re approaching their market, you’ll come back with original ideas to put to use in your market. Consider watching webinars, subscribing to YouTube channels, reading printed magazines, etc. and you’ll be amazed at how quickly your creativity starts to flow. Having a swipe file allows you to shortcut the brainstorming process and jump right into developing creative, engaging digital marketing content. Make it part of your routine, and you won’t be sorry. Be sure to catch the full story on swipe files and why you need to start creating one, all on this episode of Marketing For eCommerce. DG recorded this one in his car on the last day of vacation in Hilton Head, SC a few weeks back, just for you. The book he mentioned was Hey, Whipple, Squeeze This by Edward Boches and Luke Sullivan, who was an ad agency guy for 30 or so years. This episode draws on an idea from Ludvig’s Ultimate Commonplace System. The Review File is like a virtual book summary book, only more extreme. It’s based on two learning methods: Spaced repetition and availability bias. Your Review File is where you collect all the best materials related to your work, studies, investing, creative project, etc… and you want to review it every now and then over the long-term to make sure the best ideas stick to your brain, and become internalized. 4 Examples of a Review File: For Creatives: To build a scrapbook of inspirational work. For Marketers: To create a Swipe File of historically proven material For Investors: To collect the case studies of successful/horrible businesses For Everyone: To collect the best learning materials by category. How You Can Build a Review File Now: List your TOP 5 books and other learning resources (articles, videos, audio). Divide this material into relevant categories (if you come up with a lot). Create a Review File in your commonplace and link to the content if possible. Set a reminder for when you should use your Review File. The Review File is only a small piece of a commonplace. If you want to learn how to: build a commonplace that works like a dashboard over your life, collect an archive of your work that grows in value over time (like compound interest) structure your work so that you can work from your phone (if you work with your head) and gain an extra 10 hours a week (if you forget things or do a lot of routine work) Then check out Ludvig’s Ultimate Commonplace System: https://futureskillspodcast.com/commonplace

Spiritual Foundations This past week we held our Copywriting Virtual Summit where I gathered over twenty-five of the world’s leading direct response experts and marketers to share their best wisdom with anyone who has ears to hear. What does this have to do with Spiritual Foundations? Proverbs 19:20 tells us, “Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future.” Seeking an outside perspective from qualified sources can give you answers you never knew existed to the challenges you face today. Like I tell the people in my mastermind, “You can’t read the label if you’re inside the bottle.” Selah. Feature Presentation Brian Kurtz is one of the heroes of direct response copywriting. He has over thirty-five years of experience in the field, and as the leader of Boardroom, Inc which was the proving ground for state of the art direct marketing and copywriting. He has been able to market and sell newsletters and books via direct response television (infomercials) and using e-mail and the Internet in huge numbers. At the height of his infomercial success, he was responsible for buying media in excess of $80 million and sold over 3 million books via direct response television over a three year period. Brian is also the co-author of one of the most important books in recent memory, The Advertising Solution. This modern-day masterpiece is a collection of direct response gems from six legends of copywriting…the original MadMen. Imagine sitting in a room with David Ogilvy, Claude Hopkins, Robert Collier, John Caples, Gary Halbert, and Eugene Schwartz as they imparted their greatest secrets of how to turn copy into cash. In this interview Brian reveals: Why this is the best time to be a marketer. The answer is right at your fingertips. How being grounded in the “old school” can make you a master of the “new school”. It’s a marriage made in Heaven. One of the most important tenets in copywriting. Do this and watch your sales skyrocket. The single best way to write original copy that sells…almost everyone does this the wrong way. And how to get your hands on hard to find swipe files, videos, and more from the direct response masters mentioned above…for FREE! While you’re thinking about it, go to TheLegendsBook.com and secure your copy of the book that should be sitting right next to the laptop of every serious copywriter out there. Weiterlesen
