In this episode of GENN, Nick Breeze talks to Professor Mike Berners-Lee, Chair of the National Emergency Briefing (NEB), about why the UK is “not ready” for the accelerating climate and nature emergency.Visit: https://nebriefing.orgThey begin with the recent Europe-wide heat dome that led to an estimated 20,000 excess deaths and record breaking UK temperatures, then explore what this tells us about how exposed our societies have become to extreme weather. Mike explains why the conditions we are living through now are likely to be the least extreme we will ever see in the UK, with a super El Niño expected to drive even more intense heat in the near term. The conversation covers the UK's ageing infrastructure, under investment in resilience and the rapid shift from “one in a thousand year” events to risks that now carry a realistic chance of occurring every year. Mike argues that the climate and nature transition is entirely doable and economically attractive, highlighting analysis that shows large scale investment in net zero and retrofit pays back rapidly and creates skilled jobs across the country.Nick and Mike dig into the role of disinformation and comforting narratives such as “we cannot afford it” or “Britain is only one per cent of global emissions so does not matter,” and why these stories amount to denial of the scale of response now needed. Mike explains how the NEB takes a different view of the public, treating people as capable of handling difficult truth, and how honest communication can improve psychological health by replacing vague anxiety with clear agency. They discuss systemic risk across food security, national security and infrastructure breakdown, including the possibility of a future food shock that could act as a national wake up call. Mike describes the NEB's work to create trusted briefings for leaders and the public, the energy in the Westminster briefing where no one felt the situation was exaggerated, and the growing movement around the People's Emergency Briefing film presented by Chris Packham. You will also hear how NEB screenings are snowballing across the UK and beyond, how the initiative is building support for a televised government supported national emergency briefing on climate and nature, and why Mike believes there is “nothing not to like” about a fair green transition that strengthens communities, farmers and livelihoods. The episode closes with a focus on agency: from attending NEB screenings and inviting MPs, to getting involved in local resilience and non partisan political work, and helping to take this emergency briefing model international. Mike sets out a theory of change for how public engagement, honest information and systemic action can still turn the tide, even in the face of deep geopolitical barriers.Key topics:Europe-wide heat dome and excess deathsWhy “we are not ready” for extreme weatherUK infrastructure, heatwaves and super El NiñoNet zero investment, jobs and paybackDisinformation, denial and national narrativesFood security, biodiversity and systemic riskThe National Emergency Briefing and People's Emergency Briefing filmPublic agency, psychological health and community resilienceHow to get involved and help NEB go mainstreamLinks mentioned:National Emergency Briefing: nebriefing.orgWould you like a shorter, 2–3 paragraph version of these notes as well for platforms that truncate descriptions more aggressively?

In a stunning political move this week, President Donald Trump cancelled a planned ceremonial signing of a major bipartisan housing affordability bill at the Capitol. The bill, which passed both chambers of Congress by overwhelming margins, would have addressed critical housing affordability challenges facing Americans.Trump is using the bill as leverage to force lawmakers to pass his proposed "SAVE AMERICA ACT," which would implement a radical overhaul of voting procedures. In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared the housing news conference and signing cancelled "until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency."There has also been a significant legal setback for the Trump administration's immigration enforcement agenda comes from the ruling of a federal judge. U.S. District Judge P. Casey Potts ruled that ICE agents can no longer conduct arrests at immigration courthouses across the country. Judge Pitts, a Biden appointee, vacated the Trump administration's policies that were implemented via executive order last year, determining that the Department of Justice failed to provide adequate legal justification for the enforcement tactics. He called them "arbitrary and capricious," and said the Trump administration did not properly consider how arresting noncitizens at courthouses would impact people pursuing lawful immigration status. We welcome John Rothmann - presidential historian and the host of ‘Around the Political World with John Rothmann' to the show to discuss this and the latest on negotiations to end Trump‘s Iran war.The conversation continues as we welcome author and political commentator Jared Yates Sexton to the showThe Mark Thompson Show 6/24/26Patreon subscribers are the backbone of the show! H.W. Brands explains how, in May 1941, Roosevelt declared an "unlimited national emergency," putting American industry and the public mind on a wartime footing. This move escalated the "moral war" against Germany and effectively criminalized dissent, as Roosevelt began labeling his critics "copperheads" and "fifth columnists"—terms implying disloyalty or treason. Lindbergh felt this was a dangerous overreach, noting that his father had been hounded by the Justice Department for similar dissent during World War I. The administration intensified its pressure, with the FBItapping America First Committee phones and British agents attempting to sabotage their gatherings. Roosevelt even misrepresented the Greer incident, claiming a German submarine had fired unprovoked on an American ship, when in fact the Greer was actively hunting the submarine. On September 11, 1941, during a rally in Des Moines, Iowa, a desperate Lindbergh made a fatal rhetorical error. He identified three groups pushing for war: the British, the Rooseveltadministration, and Jewish Americans. Although he stated their sympathies were understandable, his mention of "American Jews" allowed his enemies to brand him an anti-Semite and a "Nazi stooge." Even supporters like Herbert Hoover told him that while his words might be true, he was "wrong to say it" because he had moved himself politically out of bounds. (7)1940

Lindbergh's reputation suffers a fatal blow after a speech in Des Moines, where he identifies the British, the Jews, and the administration as those pushing for war. Branded an anti-Semite and Nazi sympathizer, he becomes politically radioactive. This controversy leads to the decline and eventual disbandment of the America First Committee as war becomes imminent. In this episode, I'm chatting to Nick Oldridge, founder of Climate Science Breakthrough, and co-founder of the National Emergency Briefing. What Nick has done with both of those projects, as you will here, is incredible, but I'm also really fascinated in his back story and his journey to where he is now (side note, really think I need to do an episode on insurance as a lever for climate action!).I ummed and ahhed about whether to publish this episode so early in the re-launch, as (spoiler alert) some of it is pretty bleak, almost right out of the gate. I'm a big fan of focussing on action and the things that we can do, and I'm very aware that confronting the reality of where we are can be overwhelming and paralysing. However, as Nick says, I think it's important that we don't hide from that reality, and that we find a way to channel our anxiety into action, and use it as motivation to keep taking the next steps. The Climate Science Breakthrough videos are brilliant - I've linked to them all below. They're all just 4 or 5 minutes long, and do that really clever thing where they're delivering a pretty brutal message, but somehow making you laugh at the same time. The National Emergency Briefing videos are now all online - I'm working up the courage to watch them if I'm totally honest, and trying to figure out a way to maybe host a 'watch party' so we can all be in it together. If you're interested in that, let me know!I do think it's important that the videos are watched and shared and that we all understand quite what is at stake. But even more important I think, is that the Briefings result in action, ideally from the Government, but we 'ordinary people' will need to take action to make that happen. I've linked below to the Take Action page, the good news is that all of them can be done from the sofa! In the first episode of this podcast reboot, I dived in a little bit into the individual change vs system change debate. And as an individual, system change often feels like this nebulous thing that we agree needs to happen, but that we're not quite sure how that happens, or the role that we can play. The National Emergency Briefing is a route to system change, and gives us really clear ways that we as individuals can get involved. And as I said, they're not big asks, doing all of them would take less than 10 minutes and you don't even need to leave your house. And in the podcast, Nick shares that apparently once MPs receive around 20 emails (from different people!) on the same subject, it makes them start to sit up and pay a bit more attention. That number feels do-able - how many people do you know local to you, who you might be able to encourage to send your MP an email? Finally, a quick mention of the Crowdfunder, which at the time of this podcast dropping, is at over £70,000 and nearly halfway to the target. Frustratingly (but good news for the crowdfunder!) the cheaper rewards have all sold out, but that doesn't mean you still can't donate whatever amount you might feel able to. And as Nick says in the podcast, times are tight, and if you aren't able to donate, please do share it on your social feeds.Nick Oldridge LISTEN... Listen to the article with analysis from the author: President Donald Trump invoked the National Emergencies Act to ensure he controls the funds generated from selling stolen Venezuelan oil. “The attachment or the imposition of other judicial process against the Foreign Government Deposit Funds will substantially interfere with our critical efforts to ensure economic and political stability in Venezuela,” the executive action signed by Trump on Friday stated. “The failure of these critical efforts would jeopardize major foreign policy objectives of the United States.” After ordering the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on January 3, Trump claimed that the US was controlling the country. The White House policy calls for taking the South American country's oil, selling it, and using the money to run Venezuela. Additionally, the US has seized five oil tankers carrying Venezuelan oil in recent weeks. A senior US official told Axios that the US would be running Venezuela's oil industry “indefinitely.” Trump's plan for controlling Venezuela's oil is already facing challenges. On Friday, major oil executives met with Trump in the White House and failed to make significant commitments to the President's plan to rebuild Venezuela's oil infrastructure. “It's uninvestable,” ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods told White House officials after hearing Trump's proposal to invest in the country.“There are a number of legal and commercial frameworks that would have to be established to even understand what kind of returns we would get on the investment.” First Published at Antiwar.com

This shutdown is much more complicated that it at first appears. You probably guessed that already. Many factors are in play, both political and financial. Benefits are in play. Both Federal and State food support programs exist. Gov. Newsum has other goals with his lawsuits. There are short term reserves, but less than a month's worth. There are actual elderly and others who are legitimately needy and eligible. States cannot lawfully cover SNAP costs. It's a Federal entitlement program and not State funded. Congress holds the purse strings. There is no co-mingling of funds. Dims say nobody eats until the Repubs give in. It's always the blue states. Anchor babies are eligible, but undocumented illegals are not. Illinois and California have the most. It's difficult to get off the benefits. Cal's Governor is lying as he goes Biblical. Illegals will still get benefits. There are emergency actions the President can take. Use Congress salaries for food. Trump can frame food security programs nicely. The triple CCC. When Tore testifies against Brennan, she'll be looking hot. Good liver news too. Trust your President because he knows what he's doing.

In both this week's new remarks and our reissue, we go back to pre-Pearl Harbor 1941 and the days when Joe DiMaggio was, day by day, counting up hits and the president, without the medium of television available to him, spoke on a nationwide radio broadcast—an event so new that it caused a major league game to be put on pause. Meet the old boss, different than the new boss, because the world was demonstrably on fire. Then we return to a segment about a manager getting too much credit for helping, which seems timely in a postseason in which managers are taking a good deal of deserved credit for inflicting harm. The Infinite Inning is a journey to the past to understand the present using baseball as our time machine. America's brighter mirror, baseball reflects, anticipates, and even mocks the stories we tell ourselves about our world today. Baseball Prospectus's Steven Goldman shares his obsessions: history from inside and outside of the game, politics, stats, and Casey Stengel quotations.
