Offerings Acceptable to God k/d]Zj/nfO{ u|x0fof]Uo e]l6 “In and through the practice of offering, work and worship become one.”[1]  Pastors and worship leaders have a responsibility to develop Sunday liturgies that can confront and respond to marketplace malformations. Worship trains our imagination that in turn shapes how we inhabit our workweek: [Saturday] worship is not some escape from ‘the work week.' To the contrary, our worship rituals train our hearts and stir our desires toward God and his kingdom so that, when we are sent from worship to take up our work, we do so with a habituated orientation toward the Lover of our souls. This is why we need to think about habit-shaping practices-vocational liturgies,'- that we can sustain this love throughout the week.” (You are What You Love, 187) “Workers are people who are integral to the mission of God.” Dorothy Sayers, Creed or Chaos?   Our failed offerings: There are offerings that are not acceptable to God, such as Cain's offerings, Eli son's and Saul's offerings. Why? They are only for show, shallow, technical to get something back. Our hearts are not in it. God's desires are not considered. Love for our neighbors and world around are not measured appropriately. Are we offering (bringing to God) that he does not like or accept?  Matt and Cory say in their book Work & Worship, church needs “Reimagining of the offerings”. “Offering can return to its ancient focus whereby the community renders its whole life and whole labor to God in Worship (Work & Worship, 236). How can we reimagine offering whole lives to God as a living and working sacrifice? (Rom 12:1). They say, “In light of our investigations of Scripture, history, and the global church, there are four principles that can inform the future of the offering rituals. Offerings need to strive to be more embodied, creational, vocational and communal.” (237). By this they mean “offerings need to engage our bodies, our material world, our daily work, and they need to actively connect worshippers to one another and their city.” (237). During this Thanksgiving season, we will follow these themes, and principles from the book, particularly found in Chapter 9 “Offerings of the Early Church”.  In light of our reimagined offerings, we as Cross-Way want to be a consciously offering church, a church that loves God, gives whole life to the mission of God, and loves our city and the world (starting with Nepal). Thanksgiving is a season of harvest. Even though many of us living in the city do not farm, our lives are closely connected with the products of the soil. We must eat food that our lands produce. We work various jobs each day, and earn money, which allows us to be fed and live. We all want to live healthy lives that pleases God.   Offerings acceptable to God is a Thanksgiving series that will explore a) Why God of Creation asked for offerings? B) What do offerings in the OT and NT mean? C) What are principles that the historical church have valued as acceptable to God? D) What kinds of offerings should we bring to the Lord, that are acceptable to him (and what kinds are not acceptable to him)?[1] Work & Worship: Reconnecting Our Labor and Liturgy, Matthew Kaemingk, Cory B. And this is especially true for summer time when we feel pressured to fill our entire schedules with activities and things to do with our kids.   In their conversation, Desirae breaks down the four pillars of 'minimal-ish' living: reducing the stuff in our lives, aligning our daily actions with our core values, clearing the mental clutter, and striving for contentment. “Urban agriculture always seemed like a beautiful solution to so many environmental problems like food miles, seasonality, getting rid of the sod; not to mention all of the physical and mental benefits that gardens bring to people." —Meredith Shepherd   Urban farming can help create a future where everyone has easy access to fresh, nutrient-rich produce. Additionally, these gardens provide green spaces in cities that can be used for leisure activities and contribute to improved physical and mental health. With the help of modern technology, urban farmers will be able to maximize their yields while minimizing their use of resources such as water, energy, and land. This could lead to a more sustainable future for our cities and a healthier lifestyle for all.   For one woman, this was the motivation to start Love & Carrots, a company that helps city dwellers to enjoy the benefits of urban farming while also reducing their carbon footprint. Not only will they be able to access fresh and healthy food right from their backyard but it will also bring them closer to nature and provide them with an opportunity to learn new skills. From seedlings to soil preparation, this initiative is providing all the necessary tools and advice that one needs for successful urban farming.   Listen in as Justine and Love & Carrots founder, Meredith Shepherd share the benefits of urban gardening, finding good people to join your team, operating with a system in place, being adaptable and patient, being able to delegate tasks strategically, and taking baby steps as you navigate your journey.  Meet Meredith: Meredith Sheperd has been working in organic agriculture and environmental sustainability for 15 years. Before founding Love & Carrots in 2011, she was the manager of Chaily Farm in VA, which produced organic herbs and vegetables for DC restaurants. Meredith received the 2013 DC Mayor's Sustainability Award, 2014 Green America Award, and Business Insider's Top 50 'Coolest' Businesses in America.    Website Facebook Twitter Instagram Connect with NextGen Purpose: Website Facebook Instagram  LinkedIn YouTube Episode Highlights: 02:44 The Growth of Love & Carrots 06:29 It's All About Your Team   13:52 Overcoming the Pandemic and Other Challenges 18:09 How to Focus on What You Love 21:27 It Takes Time

Welcome to episode seventy-six of New Creation Conversations. My guest today is the incredibly gifted writer and Christian philosopher, Dr. James K.A. Smith. I have really been looking forward to having this conversation for a while. Jamie and I became friends about twenty-five years ago when he was a young professor at Loyola-Marymount University, and I was early in my teaching career at Southern Nazarene University. We both got accepted into a summer study program at Calvin College to study “eschatology and hope” with Dr. Miroslav Volf. It was a very enriching summer intellectually and spiritually. However, part of the benefit of the program was that Calvin invited us to bring our families with us for the six weeks we were there. It just happened that Jamie and his wife Deanna, and Deb and I both had four kids all around the same age and so we got to hang out as families. The group that summer had several very gifted and bright people in it, but it didn't take long for us to figure out that Jamie was gifted in unique ways. Eventually Calvin invited him to join their very prestigious philosophy faculty – a faculty that in the past has included names like Richard Mouw, Alvin Plantinga, and Nicholas Wolterstorff. Jamie now is Professor of Philosophy and the Gary and Henrietta Byker Chair in Applied Reformed Theology and Worldview. In these last two decades Jamie has written some of the most widely read and greatly influential books of this generation. We will talk about several of them in our conversation, but some of the best known are Who's Afraid of Postmodernism?; How (Not) to Be Secular (CT winner); the award-winning Desiring the Kingdom (CT winner); You are What You Love, and more recently On the Road with St. Augustine (CT winner). He's also written for the Wall Street Journal, the nY Times, The Washington Post, USA Today… well, you get the point.Jamie has an amazing story of both coming to faith in Christ and becoming a scholar – which he I got him to tell pieces of in our conversation. He's a graduate of the University of Waterloo. Did his Master's in Philosophy at the Institute for Christian Studies, and earned his PhD in Philosophy from Villanova University. A lot of our conversation centers on his brand-new book, How to Inhabit Time: Understanding the Past, Facing the Future, Living Faithfully Now (Brazos Press). It is exactly what you would expect from Jamie, a rich, thoughtful, well-written, and transformational textJamie makes a very short list of four or five people who have shaped my own journey and my thinking the most, it's fun that I also get to call him a friend. Thanks for listening in to this New Creation Conversation. Here's my conversation with Dr. James K.A. Smith.

SHOW NOTES: On this show…we're not waiting until they reach the brim, flow over, or a rainy day. We are seizing the moment as we look at what's in your bucket so we can start living NOW! I think we all have them. Call them lofty goals, fantasies, or big dreams. Those bits of adventure we've been putting off for one day, someday, or any other day but today. The bucket list; is a number of experiences or achievements that a person hopes to have or accomplish during their lifetime. During. Did you hear that? It didn't say toward the end after everyone and everything had been taken care of then and only then can you explore the bucket. But that's what happens. The bucket sits there with bits of wishes, dreams, fears, and exhilaration. You think about it and refer to it a lot. It's that mirage you think you'll reach eventually but yet you never take a step toward it. What can we pull out today? What can we experience today? What can we move from the dream column to the done column? You might think your bucket needs to be full of adventure like a trip around the world or climbing Mount Everest but it doesn't. To be honest, it's your bucket. Put in what you like. If it helps you to organize your thoughts and collect things you would like to do or places you'd like to visit or stuff you'd like to learn then GREAT. You're on the right track.  I've been emptied nested for 7 years. Wow, I just counted that up, seven years. What a transition that was. I am the mother of three and for 25 ½ years, I was raising kids. I feel like the bucket was a little deeper then and possibly overflowing since everything seemed reserved for another day. My focus was on their welfare and my career. That trip to Europe or a second language would just have to wait. I want to say it got easier and easier as they each left but to be honest, by then I was more on autopilot and worried I'd have a crash landing when I was finally left alone. “Don't leave me!!” I actually told my youngest I was considering hosting an exchange student because I was afraid the house would be too quiet. Ok…for those of you already where I am now, I'll give you a minute to chuckle. Could anything really be too quiet? HA Let's just say I adjusted and quick I might add. The major difference was time and focus. I had so much more time to focus on the things I wanted to do. Now, what did I want to do? I'll come back to that….let's first find out where this idea of a bucket list comes from and what it entails. Joe Oliveto informs us with Where Does 'Bucket List' Really Come From? For many people, fear is what holds them back from doing what they love to do, but when you have that clarity on who you are, that fear becomes less than how you want to show up in this world. In this episode, serial entrepreneur/Reinventor/Change Agent Karen Moore shares how she embraced her fears and approached her Reinvention moments with authenticity, clarity, curiosity and creativity. With over 25 years of promoting some of the biggest names in entertainment from the Rockettes at the Radio City Music Hall to the most lavish touring Broadway shows, Karen has a rich background in marketing, sales, advertising and securing multimillion-dollar sponsorships. She has utilized her talents to affect social change at Habitat for Humanity, and she has now applied her marketing, negotiation and interpersonal skills to her lifelong passion for real estate. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Having clarity on doing the thing you love to do Showing up with authenticity, curiosity, and creativity Realizing how short and precious life is Embracing moments of fear How Karen got into the real estate space Raising your vibrational frequency Episode Highlights: [11:15] Creativity and Clarity on What You Love to Do in Life Do not let your past or present define you. Do not be defined by your job either. Just because you wrote something on your resume does not mean you must stay on the same path. Be curious and be creative about how you can do things and achieve your goals in a way that's different from what you've always done. [16:19] The Authenticity of Who You Are This era of Google and information at your fingertips has provided an opportunity for us to really show up authentically – and how you show up is unique to you. It doesn't matter how many people are doing the thing that's tickling your fancy. Do it because no one is going to do it the way you do it and no one is going to give it the flavor that you give it. [21:57] Embracing Moments of Fear Fear is a big thing that inhibits so many people from taking a step. Whether you're leaving a job or going through a big change in life, there's always going to be some degree of fear. And so, approach things from the perspective of putting one foot in front of the other and doing the next right thing – then things wouldn't be that scary. [40:34] Do What You Love to Do Do what makes you happy and it will open yourself up to your life's journey and what you're supposed to be doing on this earth. And if you don't know where that direction is, or that end goal, just do something that sounds interesting to you. Look to successful people and figure out how you can do the same things they're doing without shunning your authentic self. You don't have to know all the answers. Just do what you love to do and you'll see where that leads you. New podcast episodes are available every other week. Find ways to do more of what you love and less of what you don't. Have you ever thought about what it looks like to actually live life on your own terms? That might sound simple, but if we're honest, most of us have a hard time actually doing it. I love to do things on my own terms. And because of that, I've done a few things that you might say are a little . . . weird. For instance, when I came home from college, Dancing With the Stars was in its first season. One week, an advertisement popped up for Latin and ballroom dance lessons in Nashville, and I thought, I think I'll do it. So, I did. For almost two years, I took Latin and ballroom dance lessons, and I even competed in a dance competition. Now that's weird. But that's not the only weird thing I've done. When all my friends were living in the city, I moved to a 40-acre farm with fainting goats, horses, and a mini donkey. While my friends were working their corporate jobs, I was mucking stalls. That's not normal. And then I decided I wanted to play soccer. So I went to the YMCA in my area and signed up for the adult league. I didn't have a team to play with, so they put me on a team with all Guatemalan men who spoke no English. And it was one of the most fun experiences of my life (not to mention, my Spanish got really stinking good). It was amazing how all of these experiences, though weird, were a lot of fun. But what was even more important was that they were things I wanted to do. They were things that were true to me. Here's what's interesting: Not everyone is quite as comfortable being a little weird, going against the "normal" logical path and plan for their lives, and doing some things that might be different. Do you struggle with this? Maybe you feel like it's not logical or practical to do something different. Maybe you're worried about what people might think. Friend, I don't want you to wait until it's too late to decide that you want to live your life. I don't want to look back with that regret and feel like I always made the safe choice or did what other people thought I should do and I'm guessing you don't either. Do you know that your life is just that-yours? You don't just have the right to create the life you want. You have the responsibility to. No one can change your life. You have everything you need and all the power in the world to make different decisions today about who you are and what you want for your life, your family and your future. Minisode 50 Spend on What You Love, Save on All Else Cut expenses and save money on the things you don't really care about. Spend  money on the things you love. Have expenses saved up and  invest in low cost target retirement funds. Do you make to much to cut grass or buy pre chopped veggies? What's up to Episode 50 of the Minisode A Doctor's Perspective series. I'm your host, Dr. Justin Trosclair. Before we begin, you know, I've been doing the series for 2019 having a blast with it. And I realized, hey, there's a couple of series I could put together that I didn't create a PDF form, like the cash practice physical therapy. So if you just go to www.adoctorsperspective.net/cashPT , I'll put all the episodes, there's only four of them that correspond to that. So you don't have to guess. And we had a marketing series www.adoctorsperspective.net/marketingseries , it was three and then three others kind of randomly. So I just I'm going to put those together and you just go to, and you'll be able to get that. That's all I wanted to chat about with you today. The marketing was quite good. A cast VT was good. So hopefully you will look at that and we just sort of wrapped up the dentist series. So that's www.adoctorsperspective.net/dentists , Lastly, check out the Financial series earlier in the summer of 2019 www.adoctorsperspective.net/financial . So enjoy those PDF reference sheets. So You don't ever have to guess again. This week was Noah Kagan. He's the app Sumo guy. And he interviewed Ramit Sethi. He's got several books. One of his books is your move the underdog's guide to building your business. That one's less known compared to the I will teach you to be a rich second edition. I believe he was on Tim Ferriss as well. But it's like, hey, if you would have done what I told you to do, 10 years ago, you'd be in a much better place. So just do it. So one of the things he talks about is a rich life means you can spend on the things you love as long as you cut costs mercilessly on the things you don't. So let's dive into that. Of course, as always, you gotta get on a budget, you got to reduce your spending. One way to reduce your spending for some people is to get off the email list to all the stores open it up, hit unsubscribe, if you didn't know that, that there was a 20% off sale. You probably wouldn't spend that money you just said that you would have never known but it's like there's something about seeing the sale. You know, thinking about getting there and go ahead and just get it or I didn't even need it. But hey, 35% off Amazon do it. One of the ways you can lose a lot of money is by doing a lot of house remodels. The kitchen in the bathroom could get a return on investment. A lot of times the landscaping in the backyard and all that it's just money that goes down the drain. So if you're looking for ways to cut Spence's and save money, that's a good way to do it. When he's referring to investments. He likes low-cost funds, target funds, like a Vanguard target retirement 2045 or 2015, wherever you're going to retire. He believes having like a new account for each fund, and having three months of expenses saved. And he does prefer like a Vanguard versus a wealth front. I use both. New bank account for each fund as just saying if you're gonna buy a couch, an envelope or fund an account for that new car, that vacation, have fun for each one. And so your savings go splits into all of those. Again, the concept you can only cut so much, but you can make more money in an unlimited number of ways. We already talked about a couple of episodes ago, so we won't rehash that yet. One of the things he said is like look, a lot of our parents, you know, the baby boomers, they wait till they retire to try to spend their money and travel. But a lot of people their health doesn't allow him to. So the new thing and would find to be better is between the age of 40 and 75. I'd even say up to like 60.
