Krista Shows is a singer-songwriter living in North Carolina. Last year she put out an album called “Prone To Wander” on Dial Back Sounds, a label headed-up by Drive By Truckers’ bassist Matt Patton. This May they are putting the album out on vinyl. I got a chance to chat with Krista about the album, and the songs she wrote for it. She has a distinct sound, and the album captures a great vibe. I hope you enjoy our conversation.

This May, the notorious fashionista Cruella de Vil is getting the origin story treatment with the live-action Cruella. But what happens before the movie? Inspired by Cruella, Maureen Johnson’s Hello, Cruel Heart follows 16-year-old Estella — an ambitious, aspiring fashion designer who runs heists throughout 1967 London with her loyal accomplices. After a serendipitous run-in with posh socialites, she finds herself thrust into high society and living the fashionable life she’s always dreamed. But what will it cost to keep up with the rich and fabulous? About HELLO, CRUEL HEART Swinging London, Summer 1967. Sixteen-year-old Estella, gifted with talent, innovation, and ambition, dreams of becoming a renowned fashion designer. But life seems intent on making sure her dreams never come true. Having arrived in London as a young girl, Estella now runs wild through the city streets with Jasper and Horace, amateur thieves who double as Estella’s makeshift family and partners-in-(petty)-crime. How can Estella dedicate herself to joining the ranks of the London design elite when she’s sewing endless costumes and disguises for the trio’s heists? When a chance encounter with Magda and Richard Moresby-Plum, two young scions of high society, vaults Estella into the world of the rich and famous, however, she begins to wonder whether she might, indeed, be destined for more after all. Suddenly, Estella’s days are filled with glamorous parties, exclusive eateries, flirtations with an up-and-coming rock star, and, of course, the most cutting-edge fashions money can buy. But what is the true cost of keeping up with the fast crowd—and is it a price Estella is willing to pay?

Get to know my new favorite band: The Aces. Comprised of sisters Alisa and Cristal Ramirez, Katie Henderson, and McKenna Petty, The Aces grew up in Provo, Utah where they started the band in their early teens in Katie’s garage. After one of their moms cold-called a recording agent by finding his number on Google, they signed with Red Bull Records where they released their debut album When My Heart Felt Volcanic in 2018, and later joined 5 Seconds of Summer for their Meet You There Tour. They’ve also gone on their own North American headlining tour, where they performed on Seth Meyer's Late Night Show and SXSW. This May, they announced the release of their second studio album, Under My Influence, which dropped Friday July 17th. In this episode, The Aces and I talk about what it was like to grow up in one of the most conservative Mormon towns in the United States, our everlasting love for Haley Williams, how they’ve set out to re-define the idea of the girl band, and why this new album is a step in a more honest and real direction for the band.   Check out their latest album, Under My Influence, out now! This May 28th, 2020 has been declared the inaugural ‘LGBTI Domestic Violence Awareness Day’. Intimate partner violence is reported at similar rates in same gender relationships to heterosexual relationships. While some studies have found even higher rates, particularly for bisexual women and trans and gender diverse people. However, given that the LGBTIQ community has struggled to gain equal legal and social recognition of their relationships, acknowledging that Domestic Violence can also occur within these requires nuanced community and service sector education. Joining the podcast to talk about this are two people very engaged in this area in Victoria, Matthew Parsons & Russell Vickery. Matthew Parsons is the Manager, Education and Strategic Development at Rainbow Health Victoria within The Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health & Society (ARCSHS), at La Trobe University. Matthew is one of Australia’s leading specialists in LGBTQ experiences of intimate partner and family of origin violence. Matthew leads the delivery of LGBTQ domestic violence and inclusive practice training to mainstream domestic violence services across Victoria, and has driven LGBTQ domestic violence public educational projects and media campaigns through producing and directing the innovative educational theatre piece “My Other Closet the Cabaret”. Russell Vickery is a banker by day and a musical performer and community advocate and educator by night. Russ is passionate about dispelling the myths surrounding Domestic Violence and advocating for survivors. He is the LGBTIQ representative on the Victorian government’s Victim Survivor Advisory Council and star of “My Other Closet the Cabaret”, turning his lived-experience of surviving a violent and abusive gay relationship in to a vehicle for change. Regularly appearing on stage and in media interviews telling (& singing) his story, Russ was notably the first queer survivor of DV to share their story on national Australian television when he appeared on ABC TV’s “You Can’t Ask That” last year.

In this episode, I step in to take on the only miniseries from that time that you'd expect, which is The Return of Donna Troy. But in order for you to actually understand how and why Donna Troy is returning (and where she went in the first place, you need to know the answer to the age-old question ... "Who is Donna Troy?" This May, Portland area voters are being asked to weigh in on a business and personal tax to raise an annual $250 million for homeless services. The regional government Metro says money raised from the measure would go to services such as case management, rent assistance, addiction and recovery services, mental health care and employment support. The measure would add a 1% tax on profits for businesses with annual sales of more than $5 million. Additionally, individuals making more than $125,000 per year and couples earning more than $200,000 would have a 1% marginal income tax. We hear from Portland Business Alliance president and CEO Andrew Hoan, who is in favor of the measure and Cascade Policy Institute research director Eric Fruits, who is opposed to it.

Demystifying Work/Life Balance: When will it ever be enough?

Vision to Thrive

There are two months out of the year I tend to feel totally out of balance in my life and business: May and December. Typically those are the months with more family and school activities, work gets nuts, major holidays occur, travel is high, and the urge to say YES to all the things is at a fever pitch. This May is different, though, because of the global pandemic. Our family activities and school commitments have been wiped off the map, evaporating into thin air. Our work travel is a thing of the past. There are no parties to attend, no cookies to bake, no awards ceremony to videotape, no road trips to take. What an empowering time to get to switch up the script on work/life “balance” (spoiler alert! It never existed! But I believe work/life “integration” does...more on that later…) Today I ask (or, if I’m honest, I YELL this in my own home!) “When will it ever be enough”? When will we have enough activities on the schedule, enough likes on our social media posts, enough parties to attend, enough time, enough money earned, enough savings in the bank, enough accolades on our resume...to feel contented, to feel satisfied.  When will we know when to slow down and to stop? This is a topic we will dive deep on in “Aligned & Balanced,” a 15 member small group, high touch coaching program forming NOW and launching online May 7.  Only a handful of spots remain so email me andrea@andreaseeney.com if you’re intrigued. I can’t wait to hear how you answer this question for you and your family.  Are you ready to put yourself on the list and say enough is enough? Register for one of the last spots of my 4 week small group, high touch coaching program “Aligned & Balanced” right here. https://andrea-seeney-1531.mykajabi.com/offers/rzo6eYKW  We’ll meet live on Zoom on Thursdays - all calls will be recorded. After winning a modelling competition at 18 years old in her hometown of Perth, Megan has had a stellar career as a fashion icon and become a household name gracing the covers of many a glossy magazine both in Australia and overseas, holding the longest fashion contract in Australia with David Jones, and becoming an ambassador for L’Oréal joining the likes of Beyonce and J.Lo. But she’s not just a pretty face (and smoking hot body), Megan has also enjoyed success in film and TV including Getaway, Australia’s Next Top Model and Project Runway. If that weren’t enough, she started her own swimwear range, Isola, in 2010 AND has also conquered motherhood with two beautiful children River and Rosie to fiancé Shaun Hampson (who is actually an old friend of mine!)For many, that would be more than enough to feel deserving of putting up the feet but Megan has added another incredible project to her repertoire. This May, she debuts Mindful Life, a conscious children’s skincare collection that’s been 5 years in the making. Made in Australia from ethically sourced, cruelty-free and naturally derived ingredients, the range is designed to nurture the relationship between parent and child and encourage presence in an endlessly busy world of stimulation and time paucity. Living your Yoga with Dr Melissa West

Triple Warmer Meridian Have you ever heard anybody talk about how self myofascial release can improve your relationships? I haven´t, but I am going to explain why in this video. I know many of you have been practicing self myofascial release for a number of years. Maybe one of the benefits you hadn't even brought into your conscious awareness yet is a smoother connection with yourself and those in your life. In short, warmer relationships. I have been offering myofascial release to our members in our membership community using balls and foam rollers since 2013. This May we will be celebrating Myofascial May with Myofascial release classes in our membership community. If you would like a PDF of my favourite props and how to use them in a 10 week series of videos go to www.melissawest.com/props This month in our membership community some of our advanced students are taking part in the advanced five elements yoga and meditation course about the fire element. Five element theory asserts that the continuous patterns of change and transformation that are alive in the universe through not just yin and yang, but also water, wood, fire, earth, metal and water, are also alive in us. The fire element is associated with the changes of the summer season and the heart. The heart is so important it has four meridian systems associated with it: heart and small intestines and the pericardium and triple warmer meridians. Today I want to talk to you a little more about the triple warmer meridian. It is one of the twelve main meridian channels, but not one that I see focused on too often in yin yoga. In your body it is located in the chest, solar plexus, lower abdomen areas. The most fascinating thing about the triple warmer meridian is that it is not connected to an organ like other meridians, but it is seen as a communicative matrix of connective tissue or fascia that envelopes every organ, muscle and bone that plays a key role in the flow of chi and the communication between organs. When we mindfully touch our connective tissue we touch the energetic function of the triple warmer as a coherent messenger. In other words, the triple warmer carriers the qi, the energetic impulse for connection found in the connective tissue. This supports the connection and throughout our body, and by extension our appropriate connection and relationships with others. Classes like this one, storing your energy for the day, use this beautiful prop, the slo mo ball, and connects you with the three areas of the triple warmer your chest, solar plexus and lower abdomen areas. The video starts by connecting you with the lower dantian, your energy storehouse and the middle dantian the seat of your soul, spirit and compassion in your body. From there we take the slo mo ball and compress and elongate dormant and tired tissue and introduce circulation back into the lower belly. The rolling and friction created by the grippy surface generates a shear within the tissue waking up nerve cells and improves the body's neurophysiological response. This is what we have been talking about in all of the self-myofascial release videos. When we roll a ball on our body or move a body part over a ball, the gentle pressure on your fascia which is rich in nerve endings communicates that there is no longer need for tension in that area. The neurological response gives you the opportunity to create more efficient movement patterns that include: ease of movement, less pain, and more range of motion. In the case of a class like this where we are focusing on the areas of the triple warmer meridian, the chest, solar plexus, lower abdomen areas, some of the main benefits that you will experience are, less back pain, improved digestion, greater ease of breathing, more energy stored in your body, and greater connection with yourself and others. From the perspective of traditional chinese medicine, this class which offers self myofascial release using th...
