In this episode of ⁠The Tarot Diagnosis⁠, I explore why asking better questions might be the most important tarot skill you can develop.As a psychotherapist, I often joke that I'm a “professional question asker.” It's half joke, half truth because the arc of a therapy session (sometimes even the arc of an entire therapeutic relationship) can hinge on one well-timed, well-crafted question. And I've come to realize the same is true in tarot.We spend so much time mastering card meanings, memorizing spreads, studying symbolism, and refining interpretations, but if the question we bring to the cards lacks depth, precision, or courage, even the most technically impressive reading can fall flat.In this episode, I explore:Why poorly crafted tarot questions limit insightHow to stop outsourcing your authority to the cardsHow Socratic questioning can deepen tarot readingsHow vertical arrow questioning (a cognitive therapy tool) applies to tarotI also walk you through a live exercise after pulling the Nine of Swords and the Three of Cups, to show how a surface-level question can evolve into something much more layered, reflective, and transformative.For example:The Nine of Swords goes from “What thoughts are plaguing me?” to “What story am I telling myself when I can't sleep?”The Three of Cups moves from “Where do I feel supported?” to “What feels vulnerable about needing other people?”And we explore something that often goes unnamed: tarot is inherently projective. The questions we ask are never neutral. They reveal our fears, our defenses, our comfort zones, and our blind spots. Recorded live at the Stony Island Arts Bank with the Chicago Architecture Biennial Robert Burnier joins Duncan MacKenzie and Brian Andrews for a wide-ranging conversation that moves between sculpture, drawing, divination systems, urban planning, Mondrian, Agnes Martin, and the politics of place. Known for his bent and torsioned aluminum works—objects that hold gesture, decision, and duration in their skins—Burnier talks about a recent body of drawings made while traveling between Europe and South Africa. Working on translucent washi paper, the pieces attempt to register light, color, and spatial memory rather than image, emerging from time spent in Cape Town's Bo-Kaap and the erased landscape of District Six. The discussion connects these experiences to Burnier's upbringing in Oak Park and to larger questions about how communities are structured, protected, or destroyed through seemingly mundane formal decisions. From there the conversation spirals outward into the role of myth, tarot, and Yoruba divination as models for thinking through chaos, and into the slow time of art as a counterpoint to the speed of contemporary media. Lorezetti's Allegory of Good and Bad Government becomes a touchstone for considering how abstraction can carry ethical or civic attitude without becoming propaganda, and how form itself can function as content. Throughout, Burnier frames sculpture and drawing as "sites of possibility" rather than statements—tuning forks for thought that ask viewers to complete the work through their own duration and attention. The episode closes with talk of new material directions following a recent Pollock-Krasner grant and an ongoing commitment to work that never fully resolves, but keeps adjusting—open, provisional, and in motion. Because this Solar Eclipse is sitting at the top of my chart, on my Midheaven, I'm in essence receiving a message that it's time to step up, and answer my "Aquarian Calling and Go Far".I'm encouraging you to listen,  turn and embrace your "Genius Zone" and set your intention on something that is uniquely yours.   Why is this important?  If each of us fully, truthfully and courageously embraces something uniquely of self, this is where things around us will begin to change.  Collectively and personally this new beginning starts with fully believing in the vision of our worthiness.  Don't be fooled by the ignorant depictions, images, name-calling and all the other mean spirited nonsense.  It's of utmost importance to understand who is in a prison of fear and bondage.  Freedom is a deep self awareness of yourself.  Keep knowing no can give you freedom, it is yours by divine right.  Remember the late great Nelson Mandela was kept in a prison for 27 years, but all that time he was free inside of himself.  Finally, the outer reality matched with what he always understood, he was free. This is the Aquarian superpower, the ability to own and bring truth, freedom and revolution into reality.  Aquarius is also the sign of standing with other people to initiate change by holding a collective vision that wants everyone to have their life valued, respected, honored and celebrated.  Be a rebel in that "Genius Zone" area of your life, and you will be enough, and you will "Go Far".
