Today, we look at the results that have come in throughout Friday in the local elections.Ben Houchen has won in the Tees Valley mayoral race, in some positive news for Rishi Sunak. Will this be enough to stop any challenges to his leadership from within his party? Overall, it continues to look a bad day for the Conservatives though. Labour have won 3 other regional mayor contests, as well as key councils like Redditch and Thurrock. Adam is joined by Laura Kuenssberg, Chris Mason and Faisal Islam. The Conservatives suffered big losses in Thursday's local elections. Labour swept to victory in places like Redditch, Thurrock and Hartlepool, as well as winning the Blackpool South parliamentary by-election. There was some consolation for the Tories in Tees Valley, where Conservative Ben Houchen was returned as mayor. The Kremlin has reacted angrily to Lord Cameron's remark that Ukraine has the right to use British weapons to hit targets inside Russia. And the twisted comedy series that's become a fan favourite, Inside No. 9, is heading to the West End.
In the run-up to the local elections this week, the Guardian columnist John Harris is in Thurrock where the council has amassed more than £1.5bn in debt since 2022. He speaks to people facing swingeing cuts and asks whether the vote on Thursday will make any difference to their lives. Help support our independent journalism at theguardian.com/politicspod
Professor Andy Pike has placed local authorities under his microscope for us, trying to figure out how to solve the crisis, as Sir Henry Daysh Chair of Regional Development Studies at Newcastle University. He's even written a book about the very topic called "Financialisation and Local Statecraft". When it was revealed in 2022 that Thurrock council in Essex faced a half-a-billion-pound black hole in its finances, it was assumed it was something that other local authorities couldn't repeat. But since then, five other local authorities, including Nottingham, Birmingham, and Croydon, have fallen like dominoes, declaring bankruptcies and one in five local authorities in England is now projected to be insolvent by next year. Something is clearly going very wrong. And it's not just bin collections at stake but adult and child social care, schooling, libraries—the list goes on. Speak to anyone working in frontline council services, and they will tell you that any further cuts will decimate how we look after society's most vulnerable. Season 5 of the We Society Podcast from the Academy of Social Sciences tackles the big questions through a social science lens. Throughout this series, you'll be hearing some of the best ideas to shape the way we live. Hosted by journalist and Academy President Will Hutton, we interview some of Britain's top social scientists and public figures from across the globe to explore their evidence-led solutions to society's most pressing problems. Ambisense, an IoT and AI analytics business which helps companies to mitigate environmental risks and improve sustainability is pleased to have been involved in the Lower Thames Crossing Project, working to help them reduce their carbon cost of construction. Ambisense was involved in the preliminary ground surveys in support of Highways England's Lower Thames Crossing, which is a once in a generation road upgrade that looks to transform links between Kent, Thurrock, and Essex in the UK. The scheme will positively impact the entire South-East of the UK and beyond, providing a key gateway for trade between the midlands and the north. This is the first major UK infrastructure project to use its procurement to target low carbon construction with incentives that drive further continuous carbon reduction across projects of this type. “It has been fantastic to be involved in a project such as the Lower Thames Crossing. This ‘pathfinder' project has made use of carbon neutral construction as part of its efforts and ambitions to make the new crossing the greenest road ever built in the UK. The project will help the UK reach net zero by 2050, which is a very exciting prospect. Additionally, this sets the standard for all other infrastructural projects to be executed in a low carbon way in the future,” commented Stephen McNulty, CEO and founder of Ambisense. Ambisense contributed to reducing the carbon cost on the Lower Thames Crossing project by supplying high-quality data that was automatically, continuously, and securely transmitted, resulting in a reduced amount of site visits. Data analytics also reduced the risk of over-engineered designs, minimising the use of materials, such as concrete and steel, and reducing use of other resources. Ambisense's mission since being founded by CEO Stephen McNulty in 2014 has been to build the world?s leading system of intelligence – to automate, analyse, and accelerate environmental risk assessment for a safer and more sustainable world. This project is a model example of how technology can be successfully woven into incumbent industry business models and used to support the project team in the management and mitigation of environmental risk. National Highways have employed many tactics, such as the involvement of Ambisense, to ensure this process is done in the most environmentally positive way possible. Ambisense combines comprehensive geo-environmental industry experience with deep technical expertise to give a solution unique to our industry. It uses environmental intelligence to give actionable insights into both the current and predicted status of a project, allowing faster, better decision-making. “We are delighted to have had the opportunity to share our expertise as part of such a strategically important low carbon infrastructure project in the UK, a project that paves the way for transport infrastructure progress. The ambitions of the Lower Thames Crossing team echo our own, and we are excited to see more projects like this across the UK in the future,” commented Richard Lavery, Development Director – Infrastructure & Construction. The route, which has been in discussion for more than 10 years, is estimated to open in 2029 or 2030. See more podcasts here. A former Bradford City footballer has been jailed for having sex with an underage girl and taking a photograph of his friend in bed with two others. Tyrell Robinson and his friend Korie Berman met three 14-year-olds at his flat in Bradford in August 2018. Bradford Crown Court heard the 23-year-old knew the girls' ages and had discussed the fact with Berman, 22. Both men admitted sexual activity with a child. Robinson was jailed for three-and-a-half years and Berman for six. Gillian Batts, prosecuting, said the player had met the victims at a social event he had been told not to attend by Bradford City's management. The court was also told the club had given all players safeguarding training regarding young and vulnerable people, which included guidance about not giving under-18s their contact details. 'Violently ill' However, Robinson later sent one of the girls a message saying: "I think you are stunning, but your age is a killer." Robinson, from South Ockendon, Essex, admitted having sex with one of the girls in his bedroom after he and Berman met up with them. He also took a photo of Berman in bed with the two other girls and shared it with him. Berman admitted to police he had sex with them, although the court heard the girls, who had been given alcohol, had "little or no recollection" of events and had been "violently ill" afterwards. The court also heard Berman, from Thurrock in Essex, had sex on two other occasions with one of the girls at Robinson's flat while the footballer was away. Robinson was suspended by Bradford City days after the attack in August 2018 and was later sacked by the club. Judge Richard Mansell QC said the teenagers had been "immature, typical 14-year-olds who were sexually inexperienced, naive and vulnerable to grooming and sexual exploitation by adult men". All three girls and their families suffered considerable harm, he added. In addition to their sentences, both men will be on the sex offenders' register for life. Every year from the late-nineteenth century Covent Garden’s Royal Opera House opened its doors for a night of costumed revelry. Urbanites from all social levels dressed up in the most creative of costumes and vied for some very special prizes, from grand pianos to bicycles. Lucy and Ben become very excited (more so than usual) as they become historical voyeurs. The episode is presented in conjunction with our partner Penhaligon’s and their Iris Prima fragrance. Talking Classical is back for the summer and I'm delighted to share this interview with Thomas Guthrie. A wonderful opportunity to learn about what being a director entails, particularly, within music theatre. We also talked about how one manages and interacts with not only the creatives and production team but one's fellow singers - Tom is a singer himself and very much comes from directing at a performer's perspective. However, we do discuss being "on the other side of the fence", to so speak. Tom was keen, too, to advocate the importance of previews in opera, which are commonplace in other performance-based art forms such as musicals and plays. Many thanks to: Kathryn Hare at Orchid Media for arranging this interview on the day and Tom for taking the time before his concert to talk to me! Podcast published on 22 July 2019. Interview recorded on 18 July 2019 in the gardens of the Inner Temple, London. Thomas Guthrie is an innovative and award-winning British director and musician working in theatre and music to tell stories in vivid, new and direct ways. A former Jette Parker Young Artist Stage Director at the Royal Opera House in London, his revival of David McVicar’s Die Zauberflöte there won What’s On Stage Best Revival 2018. His own critically acclaimed productions of Le Nozze di Figaro and Die Zauberflöte at Longborough Festival Opera led to an invitation to direct Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer there in 2018 (subsequently called ‘one of the best productions at this venue I have seen’, Rupert Christiansen, Telegraph). With a reputation for stylish, unfussy, energetic, physical, theatrical and sometimes controversial work, the clarity of the storytelling, the commitment of the performers and a pre-eminence of musical values are at the heart of his productions. In his own words, ‘great theatre depends more on engaging and inspiring the imagination of the audience than on telling them what to think’ (from a recent Q and A at Princeton University). Tom also works with non-professionals of all ages and backgrounds. Some of his most thrilling projects have been in this field, including work with Streetwise Opera, the Prison Choir Project, the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, and the Royal Opera House, through whom he has inspired hundreds to connect with their inner Caruso and raise the roof. His production of Ludd and Isis, a new opera commissioned to launch the ROH’s new Production Park in Thurrock, involving a cast of hundreds, including professionals and amateurs of all ages, was acclaimed as ‘one of the Royal Opera House’s grandest achievements’ (Opera). Thomas is the founder and artistic director of the charity Music and Theatre for All, Guest Artistic Advisor to the York Early Music Festival, was Belknap Fellow at Princeton University, New Jersey in 2017, and is proud to sing and play with Bjarte Eike’s Alehouse Boys. Chlorine is more than just a chemical used in swimming pools. This poisonous green gas is the great enabling element of the chemicals industry, used in creating your clothes, computer chips, medicines and flooring. Justin Rowlatt travels to Thurrock to tour the chlor-alkali plant of Industrial Chemicals Ltd with chief chemist David Compton, as he discovers the brutal process of extracting chlorine from the most mundane of raw materials - table salt. We hear from regular contributor Professor Andrea Sella of University College London who explains the many uses of chlorine. Finally Laurence Knight speaks to Mike Smith, an expert in the chlorine market from consultants IHS, about why the bursting of Spain's property bubble might put up the price of soap there.
Wesley Stephenson hangs out in the Essex district of Thurrock and tries to find out why so many of its voters deserted Labour and the Tories for UKIP. In the European and local council elections the UKIP vote jumped 163 percent in Thurrock. The council area comprises one of the most marginal Westminster seats in the country, so what will this mean for the general election and can what's happening in Thurrock tell us anything about the rise of UKIP elsewhere in the UK?
