Before photography, the most commonly used medium to capture a single moment in time was painting and illustration. Though photos and video have flooded most media outlets, illustration as a whole has not been replaced. It's still used to this day because of its unique ability to convey emotions and integrate a single moment within a broader context. Career illustrator Tim ‘O Brien has created some of the most famous magazine covers, book covers and more in recent history. He joins us this week to help us understand the skill and work it takes to become a successful editorial illustrator.

Leaders Of Transformation | Leadership Development | Conscious Business | Global Transformation

How can prioritizing your mission over sales impact your business success? Why is the health and wellness industry ripe for transformation? Listen as our guest today shares the answers to these important questions and more. Tim O'Brien is founder of The Healthy Place (formerly Apple Wellness). He and his wife Becki started the company in 2010, with the goal to become the best vitamin and supplement store in the Wisconsin area. They wanted to provide customers with the highest quality products, but also with the education needed for customers to stride forward confidently on their journey to find wellness. They now have four store locations and an online store, shipping across the U.S. The Healthy Place is rated 4.9 on TrustPilot (which is unusually high for a health store). But this is no surprise, since it's the result of their commitment to providing top quality products and customer education. In this episode, we discuss the inspiration behind the brand and the effect of bringing their faith into every area of their business. Tim emphasizes the importance of profit but is very clear that souls come before sales. With that in mind, every brand they place on their shelves is screened for quality, their team members are invited to be part of a family atmosphere, and even their chat box online is available to answer any health related questions people may have, regardless of whether they intend to make a purchase or not. Do the right thing and God will take care of the rest. And indeed He has. The Healthy Place is a bright-shining testimony of that. What We Discuss with Tim O'Brien in This Episode The why behind starting a health food store Adopting the concept of souls before sales Making decisions based on mission vs commission Unlearning old habits and learned behavior Weeding out the BS of the health supplement industry Episode Show Notes: https://tinyurl.com/kayyfuw

The Healthy Place Tim Obrien pt 1Everyone has struggled with eating healthy. I mean everyone. I suspect even the cavemen were given the "evil eye" by their spouse for wanting to eat that extra piece of dinosaur meat from off the new fire spicket he installed for her. It is a fact that two out of every three adults in the United States over the age of 20 are overweight or obese. That’s according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. I know I’ve struggled with weight my entire life. Just a couple of years ago, I was at 280 pounds and decided enough was enough. In the last two years, I’ve lost 65 pounds and actually want to go about another 15 or 20. But I haven’t felt this good in years. Amen! We all know that food is the best way to get your vitamins and minerals. But it sometimes can be hard to eat enough fresh veggies, fruits, whole grains, and other healthy options. A multivitamin can be a safe way to boost your nutrients. Don’t believe the studies that support the latest fad diets endorsed by some big name celebrity. Some people, anyone actually, can gain 10 pounds and then document how they went on some gimmicky diet for 30 days and lost 15 pounds and so many inches (but don’t tell you how much they were paid to endorse the product in doing so). Paleo, gluten-free, low-fat, juice cleanses, you name it: Proponents of any diet can find an academic study or some celebrity somewhere to back up their program. That brings me to my guest today. Tim O’Brien started off in the health and wellness industry back in 2003 working for GNC franchises. He then became a District Manager for the chain in 2005. Then, in 2008, he became the manager of Elite Nutrition until founding “The Healthy Place – Apple Wellness” in 2010. Tim has built a solid foundation of knowledge and expertise and this has translated into the success he has experienced in opening his own company. “The Healthy Place” first started online as e-commerce store, then turned into one brick and mortar store - but has now grown to four stores! Amen! Tim believes in educating and empowering individuals to make lifelong, healthy choices and changes in their lives. His desire is to help each individual to reach their true health potential and he does so while giving all of the Glory to God. Amen! Help me welcome to the program, Tim O’Brien! Tim, thank you for coming on the program today! First question I always start with is this. Other than that brief information I just shared, tell us in your own words, “Who is Tim O’Brien?” You started off in a GNC store. We’ve all seen them in the malls, etc. Was this a career decision you made at that time or was it just a job to earn some money and then that turned into a passion? When you met your wife, Becki, were both of you into healthy lifestyles and is that how you met or just something you found out you both had in common? You went from working with GNC to ultimately opening your own company. And it was not really that long of a ride, six or seven years. What was the motivating factor that made you decide you could make a difference? That one thing that was missing from the other healthy style stores out there? You are very selective in the supplements, vitamins, etc. that you offer, correct? I’ve read a lot of material that claims most of the nutrient supplements, etc. that are on the market do not come anywhere near the level of claims that are being made about them. What is your response to questions about the need for supplements, vitamins, etc? How do you determine what supplements qualify for inclusion in your store offerings? I know we always see the little disclaimers that the FDA has not reviewed or approved of supplements, vitamins, etc. that you see offered everywhere. Usually in fine print on the bottom of a TV ad that you have to pause to try and read. Folks, like I stated during the opening to the program, we all either have a weight problem, a health problem or know someone who... Support this podcast

A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, O'Brien explains why he does not like being called a war writer and he shares details about the new novel he is currently working on. Plus, he tells Duthiers that he just finished working on the screenplay for "The Things They Carried," set to star Tom Hardy and Pete Davidson. The documentary, "The War and Peace of Tim O'Brien," is available on demand.

Phil took his trusted companion Cody, a German Shepherd, to take a look. When they arrived at the corner we saw nothing but a heavily wooded area. They parked the car and went for a walk and there it was a large granite monument with the words “The War Dog.” As we looked around we could see several headstones buried in the foliage and brush. The site was in horrible shape…and that’s when Phil knew something had to be done to preserve “The War Dog.”  For More Information: www.mwdm.org

In Aaron Matthews’ clear-eyed look into the life and times of a writer that has been called “the best American writer of his generation,” and our "poet laureate of war” Tim O’Brien. A Vietnam veteran, and National Book Award-winner, O’Brien is one of the great voices in modern American literature. The Library of Congress recently named his groundbreaking novel about the Vietnam War, “The Things They Carried,” one of the 65 most influential books in American history. It’s practically a cliché in the military – the book everyone carries is “The Things They Carried.” But O’Brien hasn’t put pen to paper in nearly two decades. He swore off making sentences when, at a late age, he had his first of two children. Plus, the nation was waging new wars in Afghanistan and Iraq that he couldn’t wrap his head around – wars that both reconfirmed and upended the notions of war, soldiers, and society that animated his books. Now, Tim O’Brien is trying to write again. He thinks the country is past due for a conversation about war’s impact. He thinks we’re running out of time. And, at age 70, that he is too. THE WAR AND PEACE OF TIM O”BRIEN follows O’Brien on his journey writing his next and last book. What makes wars worth fighting? How do we write about war? What are the obligations of citizens with respect to war? What are the after-effects of war on individuals and families? He's a singer and a songwriter, a fiddle and mandolin master, a band leader and a valued collaborator.  Tim O'Brien has few peers in his influence on American roots music over the past 40 years. He formed the band Hot Rize in 1978 in Boulder CO with banjo player Pete Wernick, guitarist Charles Sawtelle and bass player Nick Forster. That quartet became arguably the most popular and influential bluegrass band of the 1980s and Hot Rize inspired a vibrant bluegrass scene in Colorado with its own strains and sounds. When the IBMA inaugurated its award show in 1990, Hot Rize won the first Ent of the Year prize. There's been much more - a varied solo career, duo albums considered folk masterpieces with his sister Mollie, an album called Red on Blonde that set the gold standard for Bob Dylan cover records and numerous collaborations with musicians from the US and the UK. Along the way he's had songs recorded by Garth Brooks, Alison Krauss and others. He co-founded the Earls of Leicester, the Flatt & Scruggs inspired band that's become the toast of bluegrass. He's been a case study in excellence and steadiness. Tim OBrien's newest album mingles original and cover songs dedicated to the state where it all began for him - West Virginia. It's called Where The River Meets The Road.
