Andouille sausage * 1 cup frozen okra, thawed * 8 oz can of petite diced tomatoes * 5 cups fish broth * ¼ dry white wine * 2 – 12 oz bottles of amber ale * ¾ cup celery, sliced on the bias 1/8” thick * 1 cup green bell pepper, diced * 1 cup sweet onion, diced * 3 Tbsp garlic * 2 large bay leaves * 4 sprigs fresh thyme * 2 TBSP Worcestershire sauce * 2 Tbsp Cajun seasoning * 1 ½ tsp kosher salt * ½ tsp pepper * Green parts of scallion * Parsley * 1 LBS Mussels Steps: 1. Preheat oven to 415 degrees. Evenly distribute flour on parchment paper and bake for 25 minutes. Flour will become a coca color and have a nutty smell. Set aside. 2. Add 2 TBSP of EVOO and stick of butter to pan on med-low heat. Add the flour slowly while quickly whisking to make a roux. Whisk in fish broth 1 slowly mixing very well until there are no flour lumps. 3. Add the ale, tomatoes (juices and all), Worcestershire, Cajun seasoning, salt, pepper, bay leaves, and thyme sprigs. Once this is brought to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 45 minutes. 4. Heat 1 TBSP EVOO, once oil simmers add the sausage and brown on both sides. Add peppers, onions, celery, garlic, and okra. Sauté until vegetables become soft. Add shrimp and white wine then cover and sauté. 5. Steam or boil mussels. Then shuck and put the meat to the side 6. Remove bay leaves and thyme stems from gumbo base. Add shrimp and veggie mixture including any juices to gumbo base. Add crabmeat and mussel meat to the mixture and simmer for an additional 5 minutes. Cheddar Corn Biscuits: * 4 ¼ cups flour * 2 TBS baking powder * 1 tsp ground mustard * ¾ tsp salt * ¾ cup cold butter, cubed * 1 can cream-style corn * 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese * 2 large eggs, lightly beaten * 2 TBS 2% milk Steps: 1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Whisk flour, baking powder, mustard, and salt. Cut in butter and mix until coarse crumbs form. Add corn, cheese and eggs. 2. Today we are joined St.Paul luminary, poet and organizer Tish Jones to talk about the grass roots community challenge to the 'ReConnect Rondo" land bridge project. We open by discussing the history of the Rondo Neighborhood of St.Paul, a thriving Black community that was intentionally destroyed by the construction of Interstate 94 in the 1960s. How did a Black woman from Texas become one of the most well-known civil right activists in Minnesota? After seven decades of speaking up and standing up, of fighting for fairness in voting, housing, education, and employment, Dr. Josie Johnson has finally written her memoir. "Hope in the Struggle" gives us an opportunity to not only learn about her, but to learn from her. Dr. Johnson's story began in segregated Texas, where her father organized against the Poll Tax, launching her on a lifetime of activism which brought her to the 2008 Democratic National Convention, where she cast her vote for Barack Obama for president. Her memoir offers a close-up picture of what that struggle has entailed, whether working as a community organizer for the Minneapolis Urban League or lobbying for fair housing and employment laws, investigating civil rights abuses or co-chairing the Minnesota delegation to the March on Washington, becoming the first African American to serve on the University of Minnesota's Board of Regents or creating the university's Office of the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs with a focus on minority affairs and diversity. An intimate view of civil rights history in the making, "Hope in the Struggle" is a uniquely inspiring life story for these current dark and divisive times, a testament to how one determined soul can make the world a better place. Poet and TruArtSpeaks founder Tish Jones recommends you pay a visit to Centro de Trabajadores Unidos en la Lucha in Minneapolis to check out Ricardo Levins Morales’ show “Another World is Possible.” The show features five decades of art by Morales depicting — and inspiring — social justice movements. Jones says the walls scream with the potential for what our world could be if we all stepped up. The show runs through Nov. 22. Art enthusiast Janet Polli is looking forward to seeing “Feminine Inhuman” at the Twin Cities Horror Festival. The show brings together Reverend Matt’s encyclopedic knowledge of demonesses and Erin Sheppard's kinetic choreography to create an evening that would make Elvira jealous. Artist Joan Finnegan just saw Commonweal Theatre’s production of “On The Verge” and says it was simply delightful. A trio of Victorian women decide to explore uncharted territories, including time travel. Finnegan says over the course of the evening they encounter everything from yetis and trolls to a strange substance called Cool Whip. Finnegan says it’s an entertaining allegory about searching for our place in the world. Performances run through Nov. 10.

On Thursday Feb. 22, 2018 Storymobile was at the East Side Freedom Library in Saint Paul to celebrate Meridel LeSueur. Meridel LeSueur, one of the great voices of the 20th century, was born on this day in 1900. Her writings were grounded in the grassroots experiences and stories of women, working people, the disenfranchised and dispossessed. Her immense love and respect for the power of the people and the power of the word was ever present in her poetry, novels, and essays. Meridel’s work touched generations of artists and activists, from Minnesota and the Midwest to the wide expanse of this country and this world. Storymobile joined Meridel's family and fans for presentations and performances of Meridel’s work as well as original work by established and emerging artists.
