How can Biophilic Design help reverse Climate Change?

In the urgent battle against climate change, an unexpected hero is emerging: biophilic design. Far more than a trendy architectural concept, it represents a radical reimagining of how we interact with our built environment. We speak with Tom Dolan, a senior research fellow at UCL and leading voice in sustainable infrastructure."We're not just adding plants to buildings," Tom explains. "We're talking about a complete transformation of how we design our cities, infrastructure, and living spaces." This approach goes beyond mere aesthetics, offering a comprehensive solution to some of our most pressing environmental challenges. At its core, biophilic design recognizes that humans are intrinsically connected to natural systems. It's an approach that sees buildings and urban spaces not as isolated structures, but as living, breathing ecosystems that can actively contribute to environmental healing.Take water management, for instance. Traditional urban design channels water away as quickly as possible, creating flood risks and environmental stress. Biophilic design reimagines this, using green infrastructure to slow water movement, improve quality, and create multifunctional urban spaces. "We can capture water, slow its movement through urban landscapes, and create spaces that are both functional and beautiful," Tom argues. The potential impacts are profound. Buildings designed with biophilic principles could become self-regulating systems that require minimal external energy for heating and cooling. Imagine schools and hospitals where the building itself becomes a learning tool – demonstrating how architecture can work in harmony with natural systems. This isn't just environmental idealism. There's a compelling economic argument too. Drawing on the "donut economics" framework, Tom highlights how biophilic design can create multiple value streams. A single tree, for example, provides services that would cost thousands to replicate artificially – from air purification to carbon sequestration, from temperature regulation to mental health benefits. The climate emergency demands more than incremental changes. As Tom puts it, it's a "wicked problem" requiring a transformative approach. Biophilic design offers a holistic solution, addressing not just carbon emissions, but broader issues of resilience, well-being, and sustainable development.Real-world examples are emerging. Urban regeneration projects are increasingly incorporating green infrastructure, while innovative designers are creating buildings that blur the lines between built and natural environments. The cloud gardener in Manchester, who transformed a high-rise balcony into a thriving ecosystem, demonstrates the potential for individual action.Yet challenges remain. Despite growing evidence of its benefits, biophilic design still struggles for mainstream acceptance. "We need to change mindsets," Tom insists. This means reimagining success metrics beyond simple economic growth and recognizing the true value of natural systems. As we face escalating climate challenges, biophilic design offers more than hope – it offers a practical, beautiful solution. It's an approach that doesn't just mitigate environmental damage, but actively creates regenerative, life-supporting spaces. The future is green, interconnected, and full of possibility. And it starts with how we choose to design our world. Here are links to things he mentioned in the podcastTom Dolan, 2024, “Systemic Perspective on the Climate Emergency, National Infrastructure Transformation and Opportunities for Biophilic Design” Journal of Biophilic Design, Issue 12. The Yacht Racing Podcast

During the summer of 2024 Irish solo offshore skipper Tom Dolan joined an exclusive club when he became only the third non-French sailor to win the hallowed Solitaire du Figaro regatta. His achievement is all the more impressive given that he did not come from a sailing family or grow up close to the sea.  In fact, Tom was brought up on a farm in the middle of Ireland and his first sailing experience was on a shallow lake aboard a battered old wooden dinghy on which he and his father taught themselves to sail. An inauspicious start to a professional sailing career perhaps, but Tom had been well and truly bitten by the sailing bug.  Despite studying agricultural science at college he soon felt the pull of the sea and that led him to a bold move to Concarneau in northern France – the epicentre of the French offshore racing scene. After teaching himself French and cutting his teeth in the Mini class he moved up onto the Figaro circuit where he set his sights on one day winning the Solitaire du Figaro trophy – one of yacht racing's landmark events. We caught up with Tom to find out  the full story of his auspicious victory.

» Diffusé le 12 avril 2022 Générique : Fast and wild/EdRecords Post-production : Julien Badoil/Studio Juno

Sit with us as we explore attitudes and customs regarding death and dying, from the practicalities and preparations of the corpse, to the wake house and beliefs regarding the departure of the soul. The episode features a good deal of archival audio from NFC collections, details of which can be found below. I'd like to thank David for being so generous with his time and knowledge, and send special thanks likewise to Síle Denver and the group Líadan, for permission to include their beautiful rendition of Amhrán Mhuínse to close the episode - baochas ó chroí libh uiléir. Diffusé le 17 septembre 2021 Générique : Fast and wild/EdRecords Post-production : Clovis Tisserand

Tom has high 400 IM swimming IQ, and he shares it here, breaking down the Chase Kalisz and Jay Litherland gold and sliver medal Olympic performances.  Daiya Seto just missed the final, and Caron Foster dropped a 4:08.4 at the Speedo Sectional Meet in Austin, Texas, 24 hours ahead of the Olympic final, a time that would've won the gold. There are a lot of layers to this analysis, and we air them out entirely.   For those who don't know what's going on with Tom Dolan post Olympics: He's been a force in the learn-to-swim industry with his Tom Dolan Swim Schools. Research into recycling of nuclear fuel was shut down by Jimmy Carter's administration in the anti-nuclear movement of the ‘70's. The work has largely remained sidelined due to the fact that Uranium is abundant and cheap and the spent fuel is easy to store safely on-site.  Opponents of nuclear power, however, have latched on to the long lifetime of hazardous radioactive waste as a reason to oppose new nuclear developments.  In light of this situation, and the amount of Uranium we will need in coming years to displace fossil fuels, it makes sense to revisit recycling. Mr. Thomas Dolan has an aviation degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and is a FAA Commercially instrument rated pilot. Mr. Dolan joined Nassau County Police Department (NCPD) in 1986 and accumulated over 25 years experience in law enforcement. Mr. Dolan formed and was the CEO of Homeland Security Aviation & Maritime Services, Inc. (HSA) in 2002 wtih a group of technical experts, addressing idenfitication and measurement of radiation sources in response to the needs of the emergency response community. Tom is a current member of American Nuclear Society. Steven Curtis holds a masters degree in Health Physics and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE), both from UNLV. He worked on the Nuclear Emergency Support Team (NEST) and radiation consequence management missions for Department of Energy (DOE)/National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) for 13 years, and was project manager in charge of the Aerial Measuring System (AMSr). Mr. Curtis held Battalion staff and Company Commander Positions as an officer in the Army and Nevada National Guard. He has supported National Security Technologies, LLC, as a consultant in support of the Nevada Test Site. He has worked with Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) on several DHS Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) architecture projects. Trailer - Waste to Energy Now! The Clean Energy sensible alternative to just burying it!

March 31, 2020 The United States is the Technology Leader in Nuclear Recycling. The carbon-free energy that can be Recycled from the U.S. stockpile of roughly 90,000 tons of SUNF & 600,000 tons of depleted uranium will last thousands of years with “Clean Energy Too Cheap to Meter” (meaning one low monthly price for all the electricity you can use!). Once Recycled the stockpile's energy would be equal to 4.5 Trillion Barrels of oil, that is more than 200 times the Oil reserves of the U.S. and over 4 times the known Global Oil reserves. Also, one pound of this recycled SNUF energy is equal to 3 Million pounds of coal. The current end waste storage problem of the 1,000,000 year Highly Radioactive materials volume would be reduced by 90% and radioactivity reduced to about 300 years. Currently, this SUNF has been in storage since the mid 70s. Is it time to recycle this unlimited fuel? What do I know about nuclear recycling? Is it valuable? What is the current state of nuclear recycling in the US? Do we need to start now and Why? These are key questions Jose Negron will discuss with Steve Curtis and Tom Dolan, all advocates to recycling nuclear energy safely. Go to https://wastetoenergtnow.org and/or https://virginia-recycles-snf.com/ for more information.

Trailer - Waste to Energy Now! The Clean Energy sensible alternative to just burying it!

What do we know about Nuclear Energy? As we continue to rely on renewable fuels, such as solar, wind, bio, wave technology and others are we missing the best renewal fuel? Nuclear energy, I believe is being overlooked as we decide to go green in the United States. Clean Air & Climate change has impacted our lives, but are we addressing the real causes? Do we know the energy saving and output for our green revolution? Jose Negron, Steve Curtis and Tom Dolan will be discussing this all and are advocates for the use of nuclear energy and recycling nuclear fuel. Why is nuclear power so important as we move to the future to meet our energy needs? How is nuclear energy use today and possibly in the future. We invite you to visit and learn more in your thirst for your nuclear energy knowledge by going to: https://wastetoenergynow.org and/or https://virginia-recycles-snf.com/nuclear-ed/ to hopefully give you some more knowledge on this subject.
