I asked John Strand, of Strand Consult, on the Good, Bad and Ugly Telco Podcast after I read his Research Note on the misinformed (and it turned out predictable outcome) takeover of TDC seven years ago. To give some context to this, TDC was the well capitalised incumbent operator with over a century of service, and it is now facing an uncertain future. To quote John's Research Note In a significant development, three prominent Danish pension funds ATP, PFA, and PKA are divesting their 50% stakes in TDC to Macquarie[their partner], marking the culmination of a troubled seven-year partnership. This research note examines the flawed strategy behind the 2018 acquisition, the subsequent financial deterioration, and the lessons for the telecommunications sector. Strand Consult's assessment of the flawed deal from 2018 is validated. John is a very clear thinker and speaker, and he related the full story very well. It's even more shocking as he clearly predicted what the outcome would be. The focus on Financial Engineering, as opposed to Customer Innovation and Marketing, ultimately means that the that many billions of Kroner have been written off. You can find the full Research Note here: https://strandconsult.dk/the-three-danish-pension-funds-atp-pfa-and-pka-sell-their-share-of-tdc-to-macquarie-at-a-big-loss-what-went-wrong-and-whats-ahead/ John can be contacted via his website or via LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/strand-consult/ If you have an interesting topic or story you'd like to talk about on the Good, Bad and Ugly Podcast in the areas of Innovation, Product Marketing, Market Trends, contact me via LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paddyflynn/

We were delighted to talk to our good friend Dr Roslyn Layton talking about how we can ensure that the Mobile and Broadband Industries become attractive for investment. We are in the sorry state where the long-term Capital Return in the Mobile and Broadband industries are effectively zero or negative. In comparison the Big Tech Industries who are the main users of these Networks have returns up to 9,000% in the long term. And they are resisting any change in the Telecoms Business Model, a model designed for different times. The Regulatory environment for Mobile and Broadband companies in Europe is not supportive, mergers and shared costs are being resisted by Regulators. Europe is missing between €50 to €200 Billion in under-investment in its networks today. Roslyn argues that we need flexible two-sided business models where the Consumer of the Data and the Originator of the Data contribute to the Investment in the Network. Fixing this issue is also one of the most Humanitarian things we can do for developing and poorer markets. Thanks to Roslyn for being a great guest and analyzing the biggest issue and most important issue in Telecoms today. We were delighted to talk to Matthew Hewston, who is Co-Founder of PassionFruit. Matthew has a background in Marketing and spent five years at Google developing his skills and networks. We've often lamented the lack of marketing innovation in the Telecoms and the PassionFruit team have come up with a great proposition to totally change the marketing of Telecoms services. The availability of eSIMs and the tried and tested MVNO business model can be allied with the Marketing Power of the community of new Creators out there. We talk in some detail about how this works and it's a great idea in my opinion. Let's listen and learn and think about how this can refresh Telecoms marketing. Enjoy! We were delighted to talk to James Williams, well known Telecoms Industry Enabler and Communicator. James is now VP Business Development for XConnect (a Somos company). We talk about James's career and how he moved into Telecoms. We discuss the power of Mobile Operator Brands and how the potential market share for Messaging Services in the SME sector is still not being tapped into fully. James points out the importance of the Phone Number, which can be argued to be more important than a National ID card, for example. Finally we finish on James's surprising hobbies and how he relaxes when at home. It was great to get James's insightful comments delivered in a very clear manner. Finally, as always, we play out on James's choice of a floor filler song. Enjoy. We have a very interesting guest on the Podcast this week. Deryck Fay has written a fascinating book about the history of Telecoms in Ireland called “Connecting a Nation” and it's a very surprising history. Its starts in the 1850s, yes, when the first sub-sea cables were being laid and Ireland was the natural hub for the first Transatlantic cables. Later its proximity to Nova Scotia made it the natural hub for the first Marconi radio services. We then talk about the state of Telecoms during the rise of the new, and in fairness not well off, Irish state. Finally, we get on to the last decades when there was huge investment in Telecoms and there was the tremendous growth of Mobile and the Internet and Ireland became a leader in many ways. Deryck is a great raconteur and he tells the story with clarity and insight that I found fascinating. I couldn't quite find the music that Deryck wanted but you'll see I got a close second with a famous clip of Albert Reynolds talking about a plane hijacking. The other voice briefly in the background is the late great Charlie Bird, journalist. Enjoy
We were delighted to talk to Luke Kehoe, Telecoms Analyst and World Traveler. Luke has moved to Beijing to study, and he gives us his impression of the city, the food, and the consumer digital ecosystem. Luke updates us on a range of important Telecoms Industry topics. He comments on the state of the Global RAN market, contrasting growth across the various regions. Luke gives us his views on where the European Mobile Telecoms Market is going in relation to business pressures, competition, and the regulatory regime. His has interesting thoughts on how previously MNOs differentiated by infrastructure and that they are moving to differentiation by services with the failure of the 5G business model to deliver returns. There has been a hollowing out of the Mobile Operators businesses as they have struggled to maintain profitability and we discuss where this will lead. There are also some very interesting and surprising new market entrants with strong brand recognition coming from different business sectors. It was great to get Luke's insightful comments delivered in a very clear manner. Finally, as always, we play out on Luke's choice of a classic and inspirational song. Enjoy. Neil also talks about the impact of DORA and the NIS 2 Directive on Operators and Enterprises in general. He discusses the Honey Pot information gathering that Siprotect has implemented and how the company can lock down specific User Agents. There was very big news in the Messaging Industry last week, after a decade since Apple launched iMessage and Google had standardised on RCS, Apple announced that it plans to support RCS in 2024. This will mean messaging interoperability between iOS and Android phones. But what does it mean for the A2P or Rich Messaging Business (RBM)? We reached out to Bill Dudley of Sinch to get his informed opinion about what it means. Bill has a very good analysis of what we know, what it means and what it could ultimately mean. We talked about The probably timing of the roll out The support for Universal Profile The impact of the EU DMA Act While P2P is announced, what does it mean for A2P (or C2B strictly) The future of SMS – is there one? We want to thank Bill for coming on as a very informed guest at short notice to give us all a heads up on the enormous implications of this shift in the market. It was great to catch up with our friend Bill Dudley of Sinch today. Bill always has great insights into the Messaging and CPaaS Industries. Bill and his colleagues have developing the 10 Digit Long Code (10DLC) service for Non-Consumer to Consumer messaging in the North American market under the auspices of the CTIA, and he explains this development and the technical and legal issues behind it. 10 DLC has enabled a new and fast-growing market for SMEs and Mom and Pop businesses to easily and cheaply contact their customers while liberating them from expensive Short Codes. Bill talks through the development of The Campaign Registry (TCR) and the interaction with Brands and Campaigns, resulting in hundreds of thousands of Campaigns now being registered. As always in our Podcasts, the play-out song is the Guest's Choice and Bill plays out with an artist I hadn't previously been aware of, but I found to him to be different and enjoyable. He talks through the possibilities and the pitfalls in this tour-de-force Podcast. We cover a wide range of topics in this Podcast: The Exponential Change that is happening now The Three domains interested in ID and their interactions: Personal, Private Institutions (Enterprises, Charities), Public Institutions (Government) Value in the transactions between domains, but there is also value for everyone at the Intersection of the Domains – the Community Commons All Domains can have self-interest as well as a Greater Good interest. “Meeting of the Waters” – an analogy of the Top Down interest in ID / Authentication / Personal Date and the Bottom Up – or personal interests and concerns Upcoming EIDAS Regulations Smart Wallets Control of your personal reputation – the algorithm is in charge of your reputation, not you Identity Theft, Fraud – this is the only area that we are protected today. The real and tragic Costs of Identity Fraud Costs of too much Self-sovereignty can also lead to anarchy and chaos. The middle path – The Identity Nexus – where Individuals, Private and Public Institutions meet. The Identity Nexus Equation Michael's new term, and this is my favorite – Phigiverse, the intersection of the Physical and Digital Worlds!! We're delighted to have Gerry McKenna on the podcast this week. Gerry has worked in the Software Industry since he graduated, both Internationally and in Ireland. He's probably best known for being the CEO of Logica Aldiscon during the fast growth days. What's very interesting about Gerry's story are his reflections on the changes in the Software Industry in Ireland from the days of emigration to the current maturity and sophistication of the industry. Gerry grew up in Monaghan near the Border and he tells how that situation affected everyone's outlook and how, with the Peace Process and the Single Market, the National introversion turned to an extroversion and growth in confidence. Gerry has a lot of fun and interesting stories about the growth of Logica Aldiscon and there is one in particular that I know you will find amazing. Gerry is currently CEO of Cation and they are a provider of, as he says, the best Chat Bot available for Customer Service. We're thrilled to have Rena Maycock on the Podcast this week. Rena has an extraordinary career across a range of businesses and has been founder / co-founder with two of them, as you will hear. Rena has natural Sales and Communications skills and tells us how she first started working with her Co-Founder to develop the very successful Intro Matchmaking (https://www.intro.ie/ ) after a chance encounter. She and her partner identified a market opportunity and they developed the company through the years. The last year has been the most successful they have had. Rena explains why this business has been so successful – spoiler alert: Its their focus selling skills. Next Rena took some time out to have a child and after being a Parent for a while that she became aware of the dangers of online for Children. She followed this up and founded Cilter, a deep tech company (https://www.cilter.ie/) that has developed Intellectual Property to protect children. She has developed this company to be a credible player in the market. The scarcity of seed funding in Ireland is a topic that Rena has views on after her experience with Cilter, the lack of funding for Deep Tech companies that require some level of investment to deliver their Intellectual Property. This has skewed early stage investment to companies that are already trading. As she says “There is very little appetite for risk in Ireland”. Hopefully this will be addressed as a structural problem over the next few years. We're delighted to have Tony Boyle on the Podcast this week. Tony is a well known entrepreneur, both in Ireland and Internationally, in the Wireless Industry. Having worked for Motorola in the early days, he and his business partner, Michael McGinley, established Sigma Wireless thirty years ago and it is one of Ireland's market leading Wireless Equipment providers. Tony has been there for the full range of Wireless Industry developments, from TACS to GSM and now 5G LTE Private networks. He relates an interesting story about the initial projection of sales for Mobile Phones versus what actually happened. Sigma Wireless is still innovating today and runs a very interesting mission critical network using TETRA technology used by the Public Services across the country. Tony also gives his thoughts on what made the Sigma Team successful and on where the new innovations in the Wireless Industry will be. We're delighted to have Drew O'Sullivan on the Podcast this week. Drew is well known in the Start Up ecosystem in Ireland and Europe He has achieved many things throughout his career but summarises his work mainly as Investor, Advisor and Mentor. Currently Drew is working with Intertrade Ireland and the European Angel Fund / European Investment Bank. If you know Drew, I think you'll know you will get an informed and experienced opinion - and that's what you get here. As he says himself he can be a little blunt but it makes for very interesting listening. We cover three main Start Up topics, the first is Company Valuation, the second is what makes Start Up teams work and Drew has some very interesting thoughts on that. The third is a topic that is rarely well thought through and that is Product or Service pricing in the market as a Start Up. I found that Drew's insights are often against the current conventional wisdom and that makes them more interesting. You'll have to forgive two things in this podcast, one is my chesty voice and the second is the interruption by my dog – but I left that in as its amusing. Otherwise, this is a great podcast covering important topics for Start Up companies looking for investment, wondering what makes their team work and how they should look at pricing their products. One of Ireland's most successful writers is Roddy Doyle, who wrote about the fictional Dublin Family, the Rabbittes. Paul tells us some great stories about the learning and the doing that made the company so successful in Asia. He talks about the team effort and the enthusiasm of the people who went to all parts of Asia and also all the local employees across the region who made such a difference. We have a very interesting guest this week with Paul McBride. Paul is a co-founder and MD of Peroptyx and an also an expert on localising Machine Learning to different markets. This is an important area of AI and Machine Learning that I certainly wasn't aware of previously. You can see why software that is sold Globally needs to be the language of the country that it is being sold into. But, when you think about it, if the software is Machine Learning, then the AI Machine, needs to be trained to not only the language, but also culture and User Experience appropriate to that country or culture. Paul talks about how his company, Peroptyx, enables this service for AI / ML Software, enabling culturally appropriate AI and removing any biases. Paul also talks about setting up a Global Software company in rural and beautiful County Mayo. Peroptyx is a a great example of the benefits of the National Broadband program. This week we have a slight change of pace and we're looking a major environmental issue, that is, the quality of water in Dublin Bay. I've had the pleasure of knowing Gerry Jones for many years and he's well known as a successful Investor, Chairman and Director, over a wide range of Technology businesses. But Gerry, through his personal interest and that of his family, and with a group of other concerned citizens, became involved in Citizen Activism after finding out about the poor quality of water in Dublin Bay. The story is very interesting, about how the group discovered flaws in the monitoring of water quality in Dublin Bay and that there is still a large amount of sewage flowing into the Bay during times of heavy rainfall. Gerry and the SOS Dublin Bay team are shining a spotlight on the problem and he updates us on what they have done, in terms of short terms fixes and also to help move the Political establishment and Authorities to focus on the issue. We're delighted to have a legend in the Telecoms industry on the Podcast this week, with Joe Cunningham as our guest. Joe, along with Larry Quinn and Gilbert Little, co-founded a succession of successful Telecoms companies and sold them on. The companies include, Aldiscon. Apion. Aepona, Accuris, and only sold last week, Ammeon. The experience that people build when working in these companies led them, in turn, to go on and to found dozens of other companies, many of them still with us today. Joe recounts how Aldiscon got into SMS in the very early days and how this was the start of a now $200 Billion Industry. Funnily, he tells how Aldiscon helped, what turned out to be its later biggest competitor, CMG, build an SMSC in the early days. You can see in this fascinating story how the traits of great Entrepreneurship are exhibited, such as responding to failure with pivots, tenacity, patience and a focus on building great teams and delivering great products. Finally Joe finishes off with his thoughts on where the future opportunities are and he plays out with a beautiful song. Frank is very kindly offering Five Free Copies of his book to listeners – see details here. Finally, Frank plays out on probably one of the best ever songs and a personal favourite of mine. By the way, the incidental music in this podcast was written and played by my talented brother, John Flynn Contact Links Book Launch event link is here – Date is on May 06, 1600-1700 CEST https://community.innov8rs.co/c/upcoming/frank-mattes-book Book announcement link: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/frankmattes_leanscaleup-corporateinnovation-digitaltransformation-activity-6785809741655367680-JqHD The book promo page is at https://www.leanscaleup.com/book/ Contact Frank here: http://www.innovation-3.com Folks who are interested in getting a free copy (5 free copies are available for this event) should simply send a mail to frank.mattes@leanscaleup.com “Yes, I want the book” Music Credit: Ennio Morricone, John Flynn – “Star”, Lennon-McCartney --- This Podcast is sponsored by Nettzer – Digital First Selling - www.nettzer.com Digital First Selling is the answer to new Customer Acquisition, increasing revenues and cost reduction If you are a Telco, an MVNO, or an eSIM provider we have the ideal Digital First Selling-as-a-Service solution for you.
