Welcome to Peri Menopause Power, where we dive deep into the transformative journey of perimenopause and midlife. In this episode, we're speaking with Andrea Clark, a highly experienced trichologist, stylist, and hair consultant with over 30 years in the hair industry. Splitting her time between Melbourne and Hong Kong, Andrea offers her expertise to salons in both cities and provides individual consultations to clients globally via Zoom. Her passion lies in helping clients overcome challenges like hair thinning, hair loss, and scalp conditions, as well as restoring hair's overall health and condition. Andrea began her career as a stylist in Melbourne, before moving to Hong Kong in 2007 to join the prestigious Mandarin Salon at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. She advanced to senior stylist, then salon manager and artistic director, specialising in colour and cutting. Motivated by the common scalp and hair issues faced by her high-stress, time-poor clientele - and inspired by a meeting with the renowned trichologist Philip Kingsley - Andrea pursued certification in trichology with the International Association of Trichologists. This training has enabled her to combine science-based solutions with her stylistic expertise to provide comprehensive care for hair and scalp health. In this episode of HairPod, I sit down with UK-based trichologist Eva Proudman. We talk about the many potential causes of hair loss, hair thinning, and hair shedding. If you're not sure what the differences between those terms are, make sure to listen in for that and more actionable tools you can use to help you navigate your own personal hair loss journey. Hair Loss: Eva's Personal Experience Hair loss is a difficult thing to experience no matter when or why it happens. Eva's journey began when she underwent bariatric surgery to manage her diabetes. While the surgery successfully put her diabetes into remission, it also led to significant hair loss as a side effect. This experience, coupled with her involvement in a program providing hair extensions for young cancer patients post-chemo, inspired her to transition from owning a hair extension company to becoming a trichologist. Trichologist Talk: Diagnosing and Treating Hair and Scalp Disorders As a trichologist, Eva Proudman specializes in diagnosing and treating hair and scalp disorders holistically. Trichologists consider various factors such as diet, stress, and medications when assessing patients' conditions. They undergo comprehensive training and use a differential diagnosis approach to understand patients' symptoms and provide effective, personalized treatment plans. Proudman explains the process of diagnosing hair conditions through patient accounts and clinical evidence. She discusses various conditions, including telogen effluvium, female pattern hair loss, alopecia areata, and autoimmune scarring conditions like frontal fibrosing alopecia. She emphasizes the complexities of diagnosing and treating multiple conditions in women and the importance of thorough diagnosis and tailored treatment plans. Hair Health: The Role of Nutrition and Lifestyle Throughout the podcast, Eva Proudman highlights the crucial role of nutrition in maintaining hair health. She emphasizes the importance of protein in supporting hair growth and recommends incorporating red meat, eggs, chicken, fish, turkey, dairy, nuts, beans, and legumes into the diet. Proudman also advises against excessive consumption of processed foods, fast foods, salt, and sugar, which can negatively impact hair health. In addition to nutrition, Proudman discusses the significance of stress management and quality sleep for overall hair health. Trichologists may refer patients to therapists or specialists for psychological hair-related conditions such as trichotillomania, and they encourage stress management techniques to promote hair well-being. Why hairdressers make great Trichologists Wil Fleeson has been a hairdresser for three decades, and is now on the board of directors for Rainbow rooms international. After attending a hair show, he became aware of Trichocare and felt that learning Trichology would give him the knowledge to meet his clients' problems. He found that as his clients aged alongside himself, their needs and concerns changed. He thinks that having a background in hairdressing is an advantage for trichologists and loves the balance between the emotional clinic sessions and the upbeat days in the salon. He outlines the importance for hairdressers and trichologists to have a network of specialists to refer clients to, including mental health workers and nutritionists, , so that they can work together to create a good outcome.Connect with Wil:Facebook - Trichology Scotland | FacebookInstagram - Trichology Scotland (@trichology_scotland) • Instagram photos and videosWil Fleeson CIT ART (@wilfleeson) • Instagram photos and videosLinkedIn - Wil Fleeson CiT ART | LinkedInConnect with Hair therapy:Facebook- https://www.facebook.com/HairTherapyUKInstagram- https://www.instagram.com/hairtherapyuk/Twitter- https://twitter.com/HairTherapyUKClubhouse- @Hair.TherapyThinking of starting your own podcast?
