What does it mean to perceive reality? How do art, science, and philosophy converge in shaping our understanding of the world? In this episode of Departures with Robert Amsterdam, we sit down with William Egginton, acclaimed author and professor, to dive into his latest book, "The Rigor of Angels: Borges, Heisenberg, Kant, and the Ultimate Nature of Reality." Egginton weaves a captivating narrative that bridges the literary genius of Jorge Luis Borges, the groundbreaking physics of Werner Heisenberg, the poetry of Robert Frost, and the profound philosophy of Immanuel Kant. Egginton explores how these thinkers confronted the boundaries of human knowledge, the mysteries of perception, and the paradoxes of existence, fate, and choice. In this conversation with Robert Amsterdam, Egginton shares his insights into the unexpected connections and overlapping themes with these towering figures, the questions they asked, and how their ideas resonate with our quest to make sense of an increasingly complex universe. The remarkable harmony between nature, science, art, philosophy and literature during these critical years resonated deeply with us, and we hope you enjoy this conversation about this special book.

The Times's staff book critics — Dwight Garner, Jennifer Szalai and Alexandra Jacobs — do a lot of reading over the course of any given year, but not everything they read stays with them equally. On this week's podcast, Gilbert Cruz chats with the critics about the books that did: the novels and story collections and works of nonfiction that made an impression in 2023 and defined their year in reading, including one that Garner says caught him by surprise.“Eleanor Catton's ‘Birnam Wood' is in some ways my novel of the year,” Garner says. “And it's not really my kind of book. This is going to sound stupid or snobby, but I'm not the biggest plot reader. I'm just not. I like sort of thorny, funny, earthy fiction, and if there's no plot I'm fine with that. But this has a plot like a dream. It just takes right off. The Rigor of Angels: Borges, Heisenberg, Kant, and the Ultimate Nature of Reality by William Egginton https://amzn.to/3tKTVPy Argentine poet Jorge Luis Borges was madly in love when his life was shattered by painful heartbreak. But the breakdown that followed illuminated an incontrovertible truth—that love is necessarily imbued with loss, that the one doesn't exist without the other. German physicist Werner Heisenberg was fighting with the scientific establishment on the meaning of the quantum realm's absurdity when he had his own epiphany—that there is no such thing as a complete, perfect description of reality. Prussian philosopher Immanuel Kant pushed the assumptions of human reason to their mind-bending conclusions, but emerged with an idea that crowned a towering philosophical system—that the human mind has fundamental limits, and those limits undergird both our greatest achievements as well as our missteps. Through fiction, science, and philosophy, the work of these three thinkers coalesced around the powerful, haunting fact that there is an irreconcilable difference between reality “out there” and reality as we experience it. Out of this profound truth comes a multitude of galvanizing ideas: the notion of selfhood, free will, and purpose in human life; the roots of morality, aesthetics, and reason; and the origins and nature of the cosmos itself. As each of these thinkers shows, every one of us has a fundamentally incomplete picture of the world. But this is to be expected. Only as mortal, finite beings are we able to experience the world in all its richness and breathtaking majesty. We are stranded in a gulf of vast extremes, between the astronomical and the quantum, an abyss of freedom and absolute determinism, and it is in that center where we must make our home. A soaring and lucid reflection on the lives and work of Borges, Heisenberg, and Kant, The Rigor of Angels movingly demonstrates that the mysteries of our place in the world may always loom over us—not as a threat, but as a reminder of our humble humanity.

The Real Refuge Is Your Wisdom Realizing the Ultimate Nature

This podcast is from a teaching that Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave about Buddhist refuge for the graduation ceremony of the first cohort of Human Spirit, an Israel-based Buddhist-psychoanalytic training program over Zoom. Here's a summary of Rinpoche's teaching, which was offered on June 8, 2022, from Kopan Monastery in Nepal. All happiness and suffering come from the mind, not from the outside, Rinpoche reminds us. Since we want happiness and don't want suffering, the vast subject of the mind should be of utmost importance for us to investigate. To become healthy—both physically and mentally—we practice meditation, study the Dharma, and learn about the mind in order to clean it up. A negative and unhealthy mind brings sickness and suffering in so many forms. By continuing with effort to clean up the mind, going deeper and deeper through meditation and analysis, you can completely cease delusions and karma and remove the cause of suffering. By realizing the ultimate nature of the mind—the ultimate nature of I—then we can develop wisdom and realize emptiness. This is ultimate Dharma. The real refuge is ultimate Dharma. This is like taking medicine; it ceases the cause of suffering, delusions, and karma. Since Buddha revealed the path, in the analogy of medicine, Buddha is the doctor. You take refuge in the Buddha when you take refuge in the Dharma, the teachings of the Buddha. And the Sangha are those who help you actualize the absolute Dharma and understand conventional Dharma through the scriptures. So this is why we take refuge in the Sangha. Anger makes us very frightening and ugly, and causes us to want to harm others. So much negative karma of the body, speech, and mind are created when we view others as the enemy. This is why the benefits of practicing patience are unbelievable. By completing the perfection of patience, it is impossible for anger to arise. All the gross and subtle obscurations are ceased, purified. Then the mind becomes an enlightened mind. When the mind becomes enlightened, we can liberate the numberless sentient beings from suffering. This is the ultimate benefit to oneself and others, unlike anger which only harms self and others. When you practice patience, there is no enemy. In this way, the person who gives you an opportunity to practice patience is the most precious one in your life!  We invite you to go deeper into the topics presented here, plus many others, by watching Rinpoche's video and reading the full transcript of Rinpoche's teaching. On January 1, 2015, physicist Max Tegmark gave up something most of us love to do: complain about things without ever trying to fix them. That "put up or shut up" New Year's resolution led to the first Puerto Rico conference and Open Letter on Artificial Intelligence - milestones for researchers taking the safe development of highly-capable AI systems seriously. Links to learn more, summary and full transcript. Max's primary work has been cosmology research at MIT, but his energetic and freewheeling nature has led him into so many other projects that you would be forgiven for forgetting it. In the 2010s he wrote two best-selling books, Our Mathematical Universe: My Quest for the Ultimate Nature of Reality, and Life 3.0: Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, and in 2014 founded a non-profit, the Future of Life Institute, which works to reduce all sorts of threats to humanity's future including nuclear war, synthetic biology, and AI. Max has complained about many other things over the years, from killer robots to the impact of social media algorithms on the news we consume. True to his 'put up or shut up' resolution, he and his team went on to produce a video on so-called 'Slaughterbots' which attracted millions of views, and develop a website called 'Improve The News' to help readers separate facts from spin. But given the stunning recent advances in capabilities - from OpenAI's DALL-E to DeepMind's Gato - AI itself remains top of his mind. You can now give an AI system like GPT-3 the text: "I'm going to go to this mountain with the faces on it. What is the capital of the state to the east of the state that that's in?" And it gives the correct answer (Saint Paul, Minnesota) - something most AI researchers would have said was impossible without fundamental breakthroughs just seven years ago. So back at MIT, he now leads a research group dedicated to what he calls "intelligible intelligence." At the moment, AI systems are basically giant black boxes that magically do wildly impressive things. But for us to trust these systems, we need to understand them. He says that training a black box that does something smart needs to just be stage one in a bigger process. Stage two is: "How do we get the knowledge out and put it in a safer system?" Today's conversation starts off giving a broad overview of the key questions about artificial intelligence: What's the potential? What are the threats? How might this story play out? What should we be doing to prepare? Rob and Max then move on to recent advances in capabilities and alignment, the mood we should have, and possible ways we might misunderstand the problem. They then spend roughly the last third talking about Max's current big passion: improving the news we consume - where Rob has a few reservations. They also cover: * Whether we could understand what superintelligent systems were doing * The value of encouraging people to think about the positive future they want * How to give machines goals * Whether 'Big Tech' is followin

In today's episode, I speak with Brandon Beachum, who is an entrepreneur, thought leader, author, and host of The Positive Head Podcast, as well as the late-night style talk show, Optimystic. And his recent work brings him to the show today... The Golden Key: Modern Alchemy to Unlock Infinite Abundance. In this episode we talk about Alchemy, Abracadabra, Art of Manifestation, the Covid Chrysalis, why spirituality fits in, the Imaginable Realm and the 8 Keys of abundance. Brandon Beachum is a podcaster, entrepreneur, author, philosopher and truth-seeker. Brandon has been a serial entrepreneur since childhood, and in 2010 while living on a friend's couch, he founded his first significantly successful company, ResortShare. In August of 2015, ResortShare was named the 569th fastest growing private company in America in the annual Inc. fastest growing companies list.  Since discussing and continually exploring what he refers to as “The Ultimate Nature of Reality” is something he is passionate about, he launched The Positive Head Podcast in May 2015 because he felt this would be the best avenue to pursue his calling and to help bring this increasingly popular topic of conversation to a broader audience. The Positive Head Podcast has continued to grow over the years, has consistently been recognized in the top five podcasts under the “Spirituality” category on Apple podcast and currently has over 15M downloads. The show's aim is to help listeners consistently maintain an elevated vibration.  In July 2019, Brandon began stewarding a communal property in Venice, CA called The Mystic Manor, where he hosted regular weekly retreats and also began filming Positive Head's epic evolution on the late-night style, consciousness-elevating variety show Optimystic which consists of soul-share interviews, visionary artists live painting, musical performances, and fan co-creation in front of a live audience.  Website. . (1:19:00) Dr. Erica Middlemiss Dr. Joe Dispenza The M21 Wellness Guide Positive Head Podcast #271: Cory Allen Power Quotes From The Show Observing Thoughts & Emotions In A Healthy Manner "Understand that there will be peaks and valleys throughout your lifetime; you just can't have one without the other. When you know that you're in a valley, then you can navigate it in a way that's the most effective as opposed to getting lost in the darkness. Give your thoughts and emotions their space, observe them, allow them to pass by, and do whatever you can to just gently find your way out of it but never by forcing, masking, or holding them down." - Brandon Beachum The Positive Side Of Relationships Ending "All relationships have the purpose of growth and the idea that one has to last forever in order to be successful is a big misconception that permeates our collective consciousness. You are going to come together with different energies for all of eternity and thank goodness there is some shelf-life to all of them. Whether you spend a whole lifetime together or 5 weeks or 5 days, that separation gives us the opportunity to miss the relationship and have gratitude for it. You never truly lose anyone or anything. Honor that relationship, know that you are infinitely abundant and the universe will send whatever else you need." - Brandon Beachum Experiencing Life Fully Through Love, Wonder, And Pain "God is using all of these 'painful experiences' for love in the end. Wholeheartedly, we will or already have experienced every type of love, wonder, or pain in our lifetimes. That's the game, I believe, that our soul signed up for; it signed up to go down the deep rabbit hole of contrast so that it could fully appreciate who and what we are in this life. Understanding that helps us realize that it's all going to be okay in the end. We are not victims because everything that we experience is not happening to us but for us. Life is not happening to you, it is always, always, and always happening for you."- Brandon Beachum Links From Today's Show LIFEAID CBD 303 Aaron Hinde The Celestine Prophecy: An Adventure by James Redfield Buckminster Fuller 096 Daniel Schmachtenberger Alan Watts 032 Gay and Katie Hendricks  Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife by Dr. Eben Alexander III Whatever Arises, Love That: A Love Revolution That Begins with You by Matt Kahn Michael Beckwith Life is NOT a Journey - Alan Watts Interstellar trailer Inside Out trailer Dr. Erica Middlemiss Dr. Joe Dispenza The M21 Wellness Guide Positive Head Podcast #271: Cory Allen Mystic Manor Optimystic Instagram Positive Head podcast Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube Brandon Beachum Facebook Twitter Instagram LinkedIn About Brandon Beachum Brandon Beachum is a podcaster, entrepreneur, writer, musician, philosopher, and truth-seeker. He originally made his way to California from the east coast when his former band received a development deal with Elektra Records back in 2001. Brandon has been a serial entrepreneur since childhood and in 2010, while living on a friend’s couch, he founded what is now his first recognizably successful company, ResortShare. In August of 2015, ResortShare was named the 569th fastest-growing private company in America in the annual Inc. 5000 Fastest Growing Companies list. In October 2015 ResortShare received an offer to be bought out for $30 million dollars by a publicly-traded company, but within 12 hours of receiving the offer, they lost 90% of their revenue stream due to an exclusive arrangement a major partner (Booking.com) signed with a much larger competitor. Brandon learned some great life lessons through this hardship and throughout his experience at ResortShare and is now focusing on various other projects. (Positive Head, HelloVacay.com, Sesh.io) The Ultimate Nature Of Reality Since discussing and continually exploring what he refers to as “The Ultimate Nature of Reality” is something he feels called very strongly to do, he decided that launching a podcast would be the best avenue to pursue his calling and to help bring that increasingly popular topic of conversation to a broader audience. So in May 2015, he launched PositiveHead.com and The Positive Head Podcast. The show’s aim is to help listeners consistently maintain elevated vibration. In an effort to help the listeners achieve that aim, every Wednesday he interviews a different author, director, artist, blogger, scientist, entrepreneur or other notable personality who is out there making a positive impact on the world. He has been extremely fortunate to have the privilege to interview some amazing and highly-respected guests in the very first year of his show (i.e. Dr. Eben Alexander, Marian Goodell, Dr. Bruce Lipton, Nassim Haramein). Brandon's Dedication To Better Wellness On the other weekdays, Brandon and his co-host Dalien give interpretations of their favorite quotes, share a bit of mind-expanding or mysterious news, take questions from the audience, and dig into any other mind-expansive topics that they feel will help keep the listeners’ souls fed on a regular basis. The Positive Head Podcast has continued to experience exponential growth and was featured in the “New & Noteworthy” section on iTunes within weeks of being launched, and is currently listed in the “What’s Hot” section on iTunes in multiple categories. Brandon is also currently in the process of writing his first two books, The Fountain of You: How the marriage of science and spirituality is birthing us into the age of timelessness and The Talk: A wakeup call for those ready to re-member.
