Does your organization encourage you to bring your authentic self to your work in the non-profit space? Or do you feel pressure to self-censor certain parts of your identity? Many non-profit employees say that their workplace culture has created an environment where they're not comfortable or do not feel safe bringing their authentic selves to work. And this is particularly damaging in fundraising, where you need to bring a certain amount of vulnerability because of the deeply personal nature of your work with donors. To help promote authenticity in non-profit organizations, we've invited two special guests, Paul Towne and Rachel Wyley, to guide us along this journey toward authenticity. Paul Towne is an Executive Search Consultant at Cooper Coleman. Paul has devoted his 20-year career to advancing social good, splitting his time between raising funds for some of the world's most impactful organizations and championing technology that promotes charitable giving and organizational effectiveness. Rachel Wyley is the CEO and Founder of Culture Kinesis, an agency which focuses on cultural reimagination and supporting organizations and individuals to do the foundational work that's needed before starting diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives – the mindset work, the unlearning work, and the community building work that supports you in creating an inclusive culture. Show Highlights: In this episode, you'll learn about… What's going on in the non-profit world that makes people feel like they need to self-censor at work The cost to non-profits and individuals when authenticity is not embraced Resources for how to have these conversations and shift your organizational culture Veritus Group is passionate about partnering with you and your organization throughout your fundraising journey. Business development is the lifeblood of any organisation. It is in many ways about building connections and capitalising on that as well as finding new ways to expand your product or service offering to existing customers. However, with sales being something many people find challenging or even off-putting what does the gold standard of great BD require? To find out, I am speaking to Victoria Butt, who I met around 2013 in a networking group – the perfect BD environment perhaps. Victoria is the Founder and Executive Search Consultant of Parity Consulting, serial entrepreneur, Founder and Chief Training Officer at Evolve Sales Training, Board Member for Entrepreneurs Organisation Sydney and Angel Investor for BIPOC women. In 2021, BIPOC angels was created, an angel investment fund exclusively working with and supporting females who are Black, Indigenous, People of Colour. A decade ago she founded Parity Consulting, a recruitment organisation specialising in placing diverse and capable talent in Product, Pricing, Digital, Marketing and Data Analytics. Parity was founded to reshape how the industry saw candidates and lift them to be equal to the client. In 2017, she joined Entrepreneurs Organisation in Sydney and lead the first Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiative the organisation had seen in the APAC region, and now sits on the Sydney Board for member success. In 2020 at the height of COVID-19, Victoria set up Evolve Sales Training, an online sales training platform specifically for Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses. Based on long term sales mentoring, this B2B platform provides processes, accountability and frameworks for busy entrepreneurs and sales professionals to drive sustainable higher revenue. A mother of two young children, wife, blogger, and self-confesses wine snob, Victoria is passionate about anything to do with DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging). Let's discuss the Politics of Business Development. Questions that Victoria canvasses include: As someone in executive search, I imagine business development has been a key part of your career and business life. Give us a snapshot of how you approach BD? Great products and services don't always mean money spinners. My career is in PR and strategic comms and I am always amazed when businesses focus on the shiny stuff like fancy content or social media images on say Instagram and then find that alone won't convert to sales. What is the secret sauce you see missing in many business's sales training practices? More than 40% of actual salespeople say prospecting is the most challenging part of the sales process, followed by closing (36%) and qualifying (22%). How can BD be done organically and authentically – many people who love their business still find “sales” approaches challenging? Is there a tried-and-true way to create a funnel or sales or similar that lands with the right target audience more and converts to sales faster? What role does automatic and tech play in business development and ultimately sales? Can you share an example or two? “Turning around worst ever billing through the pandemic, to record-setting results currently.” In this episode, my special guest Wes Ashworth shares his story of the proactive steps he took to overcome a perfect storm of business during the height of the pandemic. He also explains how he went from 100% contingency to 100% retained! Wes is the Vice President of Executive Search at Lee Group Search, and specializes in partnering with packaging companies nationwide to find the talent they need to grow and scale their business operations. He joined the company in 2014 as an Executive Search Consultant and was promoted to his current position in April 2020. I'm especially proud of this episode because Wes credits The Resilient Recruiter as being a “lifeline” during the toughest period of his career, and helping him access the motivation, strategies, role models and resources he needed to turn things around. Episode Outline and Highlights [2:27] How Wes finds the Resilient Recruiter podcast value-adding. [4:30] Wes shares his story on how he came into recruiting. [6:45] Why 2020-21 were the worst years for Wes and how he turned it around. [19:02] Key changes implemented to shift from the worst times to the best. [25:18] “The world belongs to askers,” - how moving to the engaged model drastically changed Wes' recruitment results. [33:15] Great ways to pitch the engaged model to your existing contingent clients. [39:30] Turning around the worst ever billing through the pandemic, to currently record-setting results. [42:05] How having a peer group to pace yourself against can give better results. [46:00] How to develop your messaging approach to stand out in a world of noise. From Worst to Best Times - Key Success Factors Wes' recruitment journey is indeed colourful in terms of successes and learnings. He joined the industry around 2014, and three years later he was stable and was billing $550k with his own book of clients. He had high hopes for 2020 and he even got promoted to VP. Then suddenly in March 2020, Wes' high hopes came crashing down. Due to the pandemic, businesses and clients started to go away. His personal production plummeted and he was feeling the pressure. Being newly promoted, he had to carry his team's performance which added more stress. Like with many others, the negativity brought about by the pandemic placed a great toll on Wes both personally and professionally. Wes was never a quitter. With the support of his wife and the proactive actions that he took, he was actually able to turn from the worst times to the best times of his career. This is a story I am sure you will want to hear. What are the key factors that enabled him to overcome this colossal challenge? Here are some takeaways from our conversation: Revisiting his business development and quantifying his efforts. Wes discussed how doing so made him realize that he lost around $600k+ in billings. Transitioning from 100% contingent, to 100% engaged/retained. This was not easy, but as Wes discussed it, he had to “put his stake in the ground and don't look back”. Listening to the Resilient Recruiter podcast and reaching out to those whose stories resonated with him. Having a peer group - applying for and getting accepted to the Pinnacle Society. Wes discussed each of the above in this episode and even shared other best practices. The World Belongs to Askers One game-changer that contributed to Wes' success is how he transitioned from 100% contingent to 100% retained. This was not easy at the onset as he had to be willing to walk away from businesses. Initially, Wes focused on implementing this approach to his new clients. How did Wes transition from pure contingent to engaged? He is a firm believer in the advice that “the world belongs to askers.” Asking the right questions enabled him to apply the retained approach to new clients and to some legacy clients as well. Wes is confident that he made the right decision, saying “honestly there is nothing in my mind that can convince me otherwise to do anything different.” Aside from the outstanding results profit-wise, he found that it makes more sense for him and his clients. With this approach, he is able to foster a working relationship based on trust. To Wes' realization, if a client would not want to pay an engagement fee, it could be that they don't trust you. He believes that if a client does not trust you, it will not be a good working relationship and best to move forward. How to Stand Out in A World of Noise Wes also shared his best approach to improving his messaging. There is a lot of noise out there at the moment, so how did Wes change his business development strategy? His approach is more niche specific. He also utilizes LinkedIn automation. He explained that it is not overbearing, it's important to come across as a normal person. His messaging leans more on being raw, real and relevant. You will hear how he turned his messaging upside down and generated better results. Start a conversation here: https://www.recruitmentcoach.com/vc Wes Ashworth Bio and Contact Info A member of The Pinnacle Society, Wes continues to find success through his strong belief in doing the right thing, caring about people and fostering close relationships with both the company and the candidate. His proven process to align talent to grow businesses starts with taking the time to deeply understand what a business needs, the culture they've created for their team members and what type of candidate will help them grow. It stretches into getting that same level of understanding from the candidate. This work goes beyond a traditional meet and greet or interview. It's more than a job description and more than a resume. For Wes, getting the perfect fit is the name of the game. Finding the candidate that fits the company and the company that fits the candidate are both critical. Only with a carefully evaluated fit will a candidate be positioned for success and find fulfillment in their job. In turn, companies benefit from an engaged employee who is a top performer over the long term. Wes' laser focus on fit and long-term success has served him well. Recalling a client who turned to Lee Group Search with a job opening that several other agencies could not fill after more than six months of searching for candidates, Wes took the time to learn about the company and get up to speed on the nuances of the specific job requirements and culture of the organization. Within a few weeks, he was able to fill the position with the right candidate who went on to be successful with the company. Today, Wes counts the company as one of his most loyal clients. When he's not matching candidates with positions, Wes enjoys spending quality time with his family and being around the water – piloting his kayak, catching a fish, or simply relaxing at the beach. Welcome back to the Cameron-Brooks podcast. 2017 Cameron-Brooks Alumnus Nick Henderson and I talk about the recently published Cameron-Brooks Transition Guide, "3 Game-Changing Strategies for JMOs Making the Jump to Business". Nick is a Consultant with Russell Reynolds Associates (RRA), a leading executive search and leadership advisory company. Nick is a great example of making the successful transition from the military to business. In five years, Nick has created a track record of success with an industry-leading company that values military officers. He has been one of the top-performing Consultants among his peers. Not only did Nick take time to do this episode with me, but he has also been a great advisor to other military officers considering and making a transition. He is always volunteering his time to help others succeed. Additionally, he is involved with onboarding and developing new JMOs at RRA. While Nick and I address how he used the three strategies of making a transition, the major point Nick communicated is that while checklists are critical to success in the military (he should know, he is a former Naval Aviator), they will only take you so far in business. To be successful, you will need to think creatively, ask a lot of questions, seek out mentors and approach challenges from many different angles. I want to say a special thanks to Nick for taking his time, sharing his experience and knowledge and always being willing to assist other JMOs. If you're interested in learning more about why companies hire from Cameron-Brooks, contact us! You can also check out our Transition Guide on "3 Game-Changing Strategies for JMOs Making the Jump to Business" for additional transition tips. Welcome to the 2019 IIEX North America Conference Series. Recorded live in Austin, this series is bringing interviews straight to you from exhibitors and speakers at this year’s event. In this interview, host Jamin Brazil interviews Laura Drews Freund, CEO and Executive Search Consultant at Cranbrook Search Consultants. Contact Laura Online: LinkedIn Cranbrook Search Consultants [00:00] There’s been a ton of consolidation in the market research space over the last year. Dynata has done a number of acquisitions. There’s been quite a few others. Just follow MR web if you don’t know what’s happening. All those individuals that have been displaced need jobs and, at the same time, one of the No. 1 things I hear from insights professionals inside of brands is that they’re looking to hire. Laura with Cranbrook Search Consultants is a really good contact for you to make if you are looking for a job or you’re looking to place somebody. In her interview, we talk about tips and tricks for both finding good talent as well as making yourself very attractive for prospective hires. So, I hope you find value here. As always, you can find her contact information in the show notes. [00:51] Cranbrook Search Consultants. I’m here with the CEO, Laura. How are you today? [00:58] I’m doing very well. Anxious to get downstairs. It’s actually a pretty good setup this year: there’s multiple, separate rooms; excellent food as usual; some charging stations. So I like the setup so far. [01:11] Yeah, I like it too. You know they’ve got just over 100 additional participants in this year’s show versus last year, which was bursting at the seams, which I think is a big deal because it was in Atlanta historically and this is the first year they moved out of that market, which usually you’d see sort of a decrease in attendance, I would think. [01:28] Right. I think because they moved it out of that one in Georgia, it probably encouraged people because remember there was just that one hallway that had all the booths. [01:38] I do, yeah. You could barely move. [01:42] Yes, I thought that was too crowded. [01:44] Yeah, it was super... It had the feeling of a house party. [01:46] Which isn’t bad. [01:48] No, it’s not. I know. I kind of liked it, to be honest, but … [01:51] We’re kind of having a party here. [01:52] I agree. [01:53] This is a party. [01:54] Totally. So, you’ve been in the market research space for quite a while. [01:57] Yes. [01:57] Tell me a little bit about what it is that you guys do. [02:01] So, we hire full-time, permanent professionals within the market research space. So it can go pretty much business developers; it can be more C-level; and, generally, I would say director on up. People don’t usually come to us for, say, analyst-level roles unless there’s ten that they need immediately. [02:25] So it’s like scale-type thing, right, yeah, totally. There’s a couple of different matchmaker-type service companies inside of our space, as you know. And, of course, you know who all of them are. What is sort of the point of differentiation? [02:37] We have a value prop that I think is kind of unique. First of all, my business partner, Matt O’Mara, was a researcher; so, he really talks the talk. [02:51] Understands the... yep. [02:54] And so, if there’s some probing that we need to do to really qualify the job, he knows how to get there from a research perspective. So, he’s a researcher turned recruiter. I have been a market research recruiter since Day 1. I’ve never recruited for like cell phone sales people or anything like that. So, I started out as an outside recruiter at an external firm. Today we are joined by Jennifer Bedford of Signal Partners, responsible for incredible and high-end recruitment and placements of digital talent. Jennifer shares the history of her career, and what it was like to go from strictly telephone and paper to the dawn of the new era with the internet. She also talks about the trends she sees in working with high-end clients, inside tips for those looking to position themselves for an upward career step, and how to stay in the game even when dealing with failure. Takeaways: [3:50] Jennifer explains the role of headhunter, formally called Executive Search Consultant or Management Consultant. In the beginning of Jennifer’s work within the industry, Executive Search was structured a lot like law firms, with young associates coming in, learning, working for partners who are bringing in new business. This time was pre-internet, and the telephone was the primary tool to master in order to get to the Executive you wanted to develop the relationship with. It was also a large number of sales at first, building a rapport quickly to establish an interest to then shift the headhunter into a buyer. [8:45] In 1997, as Jennifer was working in Los Angeles, she noticed the tide turn for top-level executives looking for New Media Leaders that understood how to navigate the world of the internet. She traded in the highlighter and directory for a computer, and it completely changed the game of research and communication. [12:34] The new generation of recruiters must learn and master the art of communication, otherwise, they will have trouble getting the attention of busy executives and breaking through the noise of all the competition. [13:05] As time moved from dialing for dollars in the 1990’s to the rise of the big bright internet in the late 90’s, Jennifer refers to the bubble bursting in 2000 as a “dark, creepy time.” [14:48] Web 2.0 made way for a new type of leader and created brands, products, and leaders that may have never emerged without the bubble bursting. [16:18] Jennifer’s client is the startup, firm, or brand calling them to retain them much like a lawyer or accountant. They are paid then to launch an assignment and are compensated both on a retainer basis and a reward for placement basis. [17:22] The great old equation of compensation was 33.3% of the Executive’s Cash Compensation package. [18:59] Jennifer works very closely with her clients to let them know how quickly it will take realistically, who their competition is, and who they know that is excellent in that space. [22:07] Great storytelling skills, established relationships, a deep curiosity, and commitment to clients are important in Jennifer’s business. [25:35] Jennifer shares how they start a hunt for the right CEO or Executive without the entire company knowing. [28:23] If someone tries to get back into the marketplace, they must have a strong and compelling voice if they want to rise to the top of who is assessing candidates for recommendation. Whiny victims need not apply! [32:50] A professional like Jennifer oftentimes has the ability to work with the client and guide them to what they really need and help people reframe their story in a way that shows their best assets. [38:19] We have seen many instances of people coming from huge monolithic companies that have been pampered who may have a rude awakening going into a more traditional company. [41:28] Networking 101 — be nice to your recruiters! [42:57] Jennifer addresses how some CEOs and big brand leaders stay in the game by becoming industry experts, crafting a fresh story and helping others, even when dealing with large career missteps. [51:42] Positivity, high energy, and staying up on the game and industry are paramount to standing out above the other potential candidates. Quotes: “We are solution-based, and focused on how do we get the best person in front of you in the most efficient and effective period of time.” “If you can’t tell a good story, you aren’t going to stick with me. My job is all about storytelling.” “The truth is a matter of perspective.” — Obi-Wan “Everyone wants a shiny, sparkly hire that they don’t have to explain.” “There’s something to be said about cutting your teeth in intense environments that are earnest about what they do.” “Your career really is your brand. Does it tell your latest story, are you proud of what you see?” Mentioned in This Episode: “Why Silicon Valley Loves Failures” — Inc Magazine “Silicon Valley’s culture of failure” — The Guardian “Finding positivity in failure” — Silicon Valley Leaders “In Silicon Valley, Failing is Succeeding” — Newsweek Jennifer Bedford LinkedIn Signal Partners
