This week, The Pidgin keeps its wits about it and takes on something that's been plaguing our online spaces, and how we interact with them: brainrot. Mind-numbing and addictive, born on TikTok and leaking into real life, brainrot has come to be a quintessential part of contemporary culture. And we're turning it on its head. For our community section, Maggie Stewart talks to sociologist Niobe Way, to Stanford psychologist Judy Chu, and to some of her own male friends, to understand what the internet phenomenon of the TikTok Rizz Party reveals about modern masculinity, and boyhood. Up next, in our culture section, reporters Martiza Roberts and Emilka Puchlaski go to an Everyone Asked About You Concert, and they get the feeling that emo isn't dead, but concert etiquette might be. And for science, we stay on our social science kick, and we have WPRB usual suspect Margo Mattes interviews a sociologist from the Toronto Metropolitan University about the experiences of older adults with social media. This episode of the Pidgin was hosted and produced by Teo Grosu, reported, and recorded by Maggie Stewart, Margo Mattes, Emilka Puchlaski, and Martiza Roberts, and edited by Teo Grosu, Zachary Vernon, Maggie Stewart, Amelia Carneiro-Zhu, Margo Mattes, and Natalia Maidique.(1:54) The TikTok Rizz Party(27:10) Emo Isn't Dead, But Concert Etiquette Might Be(44:11) Not Your Mama's Brainrot

News and Culture continues its second Fall season by pointing the microphone not at a genesis or an ending, but rather at three stories in the middle of their journeys of transformation. Abani Ahmed and Daniel Yeo speak to the developers and planners seeking to revitalize Trenton, New Jersey's capital city. Natalia Maidique and Navani Rachamallu explore the comeback of vinyl record culture in recent years – from the perspectives of both the music team here at WPRB and the iconic Princeton Record Exchange. And Claire Kaneshiro learns about the experiences of those who identify as “born-again” Christians – and discovers a new perspective on self-transformation. Directed and hosted by Adam Sanders. Reported, recorded, and produced by Abani Ahmed, Daniel Yeo, Natalia Maidique, Navani Rachamallu, Claire Kaneshiro, and Adam Sanders. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/newsandculture/message

Finishing up our Cage Match, we have a special guest! We are joined by Jon Solomon, DJ at WPRB and head of Comedy Minus One records, to discuss the LA-centric romantic comedy starring Nicolas Cage and Deborah Foreman. We talk about music, teen comedies, The Best Show, and what happens when a Punk Rock guy falls in love with a New Wave girl.
Rebroadcast - December 16, 2019 This is an episode from the News and Culture archives. Oliver and Anna caught up with Professor Casey Lew-Williams, one of the directors of Princeton University's Baby Lab. Casey and his fellow researchers study development in children whose ages range from a couple months to 7 years old. We talked to Casey because his work gets right to the question we've been asking for a while. Do the things that are important to us when we're young remain important as we get older? Elizabeth talks to two kids who are getting ready for their big holiday performance of A Christmas Carol at the McCarter Theater in Princeton. They discussed acting and stuffed animals. Julia has three brothers -- all older than her -- and growing up she relied on strangely formalized rules to survive. Here she is with a toy study of an improvised society. Oliver speaks with Alex Keane about death, family, friends, and bullies. Special shoutout to Alex's dad, Steve, who is a long time WPRB listener. Thanks so much! Remy's sister is in 7th grade. That's a seriously tough year. Here's how she's coping. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/newsandculture/message
Ian Auzenne, Morning Show co-host on KPEL 96.5 with Bernadette Lee, joins Discover Lafayette to discuss his journey in broadcasting. Ian is also well-known for his sports play-by-play broadcasting career. He is a delightful trivia buff who shows up prepared for any job he is called upon to handle in a cheerful and genial manner. A Lafayette Parish native, Ian grew up in a rural area outside of Carencro around Gloria Switch Road. His father was a St. Landry Parish educator, and from a young age, Ian commuted with his dad to attend schools in that parish and graduated from Beau Chenes High School near Arnaudville, LA in 2006. He's remained friends with many of his buddies from his grade school years, and still affectionately calls out Nick and Butterbean on his morning radio show. A once-in-a-lifetime experience Ian's Junior year in high school changed the trajectory of his life. Princeton University was inviting students from rural and poorer areas of the U. S. to apply for their "Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America" summer program. Ian was encouraged by school administrators to apply and he was selected, one of only 54 in the U. S. to be selected (and only one of four or five from Louisiana). The experience led Ian to "absolutely fall in love with Princeton" and he applied to attend college there and was accepted. He graduated from Princeton in 2010. Ian Auzenne pictured calling plays during a Princeton-Brown game in 2009. "Those four years at Princeton molded me into the person I am now. If I wouldn't have gone there, I don't know if I'd be in broadcasting, if I'd be in sportscasting. Princeton led me directly into my career. I studied Political Science, but people who know me say I majored in WPRB, Princeton's student-run radio station, and minored in politics because I spent more time at the station than I did in the classroom or my dorm." While at Princeton, Ian became heavily involved with the student-run radio station WPRB, where he fell in love with broadcasting and was a natural at doing sports play-by-play. He covered Princeton football, men's and women's basketball, baseball, and softball. Ian loved Princeton so much he thought he would be staying in that region upon graduation. On April 20, 2010, however, as he was about to graduate, his beloved grandfather, Darrell Sonnier, passed away. Ian's heart told him he needed to return home to Acadiana to be close to family. The first call he made as he was looking for a job was to Darla Montgomery, longtime anchor at KLFY. Darla was a friend and mentor of Ian's, having met him when she allowed him to job shadow her in high school. Ian was hired and served as Producer of "Meet Your Neighbor" and Editor of "Passe Partout. He even had an opportunity or two to serve as a field reporter when called upon, something he loved to do. Ian Auzenne in the early days of his broadcasting career at KLFY where he served as Producer of Meet Your Neighbor and Editor of Passe Partout. His experience has taught him the difference between editorials (viewpoints) and delivering the facts to the listening audience. "It's easy to run your mouth off. It's more difficult to be tactful and respectful. You don't want to take the low road. At the end of the day, we're a news organization and I deliver the news. I am bound by an ethical standard, by what our profession dictates. When a polarizing issue presents itself, you have to ask, "Is it worth offering an opinion or do you just give the listeners the facts and let them sort it out." Ian moved on to KATC-TV, serving as executive news and special events producer for nine years. He joined Townsquare Media to serve as co-host of KPEL 96.5's daily morning show in February 2021. Daily early radio work takes discipline. With the show beginning each day at 6 a.m., Ian's day begins at the studio around 4:30 each morning so that he has time to write up the latest news and be ready to start the show promptly.

Matt Pinfield grew up loving all things radio which led to visits to the local AM station WCTC in New Brunswick at the age of ten, where he would sit in with the patient and supportive night jock, giving him the chance to learn everything he could about being a DJ and being on the radio. When Matt turned sixteen, he had his first chance to do a real live radio show on the Rutgers University radio station WRSU, where he would later become promotions director and music director. He also did summer shows on Princeton University's WPRB in the early '80s. Now with real on-air experience, Matt looked to the next level, which was getting a job at a commercial radio station.Matt got that chance in 1984, as a weekend/overnights/fill-in jock at WHTG- FM in Asbury Park NJ in 1984. He embraced the opportunity he had been given, and soon enough he secured a regular midday slot, quickly followed by the coveted afternoon drive. Matt's reputation as the most knowledgeable and respected music personality at the station led to a dramatic increase in listenership and helped put WHTG on the national map as one of the first alternative music stations anywhere, leading to the worldwide alternative music revolution to come in the early 90s.His next promotion took him to the position of Music Director at WHTG. During his tenure, his talent and personality were recognized by his peers and he was awarded the Gavin Award for Commercial Alternative Music Director of the Year back to back in '92 and '93, the first time anyone who was not in a major market had won the award. In early 1994, he was promoted to Program Director at WHTG.With his talent, personality and unmatched enthusiasm for music now making waves on a national level, he was approached by MTV, and they quickly recognized Matt was the right person to join their global brand. In ‘93, Matt did his first on-air MTV hosting on the show “120 Minutes” as a fill- in. Although he didn't get hired as the permanent host at that time, it was clear that this would be inevitable when a permanent slot opened up. No one knew the alternative music scene more thoroughly, or was respected more by the artists. In January of '95, Matt was named Manager of Music Programming for MTV, and was one of the committee of 10 who picked and programmed the videos and created specials for the channel in one of their most influential periods. Just months later, Matt was asked to start hosting “120 Minutes”, the cutting edge alternative music program on MTV.Due to his vast musical knowledge and relatable delivery, MTV research soon showed he was MTV's most loved and respected VJ. This quickly led to a dramatic expansion of his on-air responsibilities to include over the next 5 years over 15 regular shows, over 100 specials, and used his style as the template for the original MTV2 (M2), where he became that channel's first VJ.In the spring of '96. Howard Stern suggested that WXRK in New York City flip format from Classic to Modern Rock and asked them to hire Matt.Although they wanted him to do afternoon drive, because of his growing MTV schedule, he ended up doing a 4-hour free form New Music/Classic show called “The Buzz” which ran until the station changed format in the mid-2000s. Pinfield continued to do the show when he left MTV to move to LA in 2000 to broadcast from K-ROCK LA's studios. Matt's move to LA was to host and write the USA network TV show “Farmclub.com” which was on TV from 2000-2001 where A-list artists played live alongside unknowns who uploaded their music to the show's website. Interscope CEO and show creator Jimmy Iovine said, “it was a great show and idea…think Myspace and Facebook but way ahead of its time, when no one had broadband.”When the show finished, Matt moved back to NYC and was named Vice President of A&R and Artist Development for Rock at Columbia Records where he signed and oversaw the making of many gold and platinum recordsbetween 2001-2006.Matt continued hosting “The Buzz” on WXRK, New York, and was then hired to do the first weekly music interview show in HD by Marc Cuban for HDNET. “Sound Off With Matt Pinfield” lasted 4 seasons and featured interviews with artists from every music genre-Rock, Pop, Country, Hip-Hop, Jazz, andR&B.In May of 2008, Matt started doing morning drive for WRXP in NYC, a new station that fused modern and classic rock and remained with the station until it changed ownership and format in June 2011. In July 2011, MTV brought back Matt's signature show and changed the name to “MTV2's 120 Minutes With Matt Pinfield”. The show's return met with praise from over 250 publications and websites including The NY Times, The LA Times, Entertainment Weekly and Hollywood Reporter. The show aired weekly on Fridays.Matt has continued to host radio shows and specials for SiriusXM since 2003 on the Lithium, First Wave, Left Of Center (now SiriusXMU), and Volume channels. In 2014, he was elected to the Board of Governors of the Recording Academy and Grammys where he worked to help pass legislation on artists' songwriting and performance fair royalties compensation. He remained on the board until he moved to San Francisco to do the morning show on legendary rock station KFOG during 2016-17.Matt is the host of the classic rock history syndicated weekend radio show “Flashback” for Cumulus Radio Networks which airs on over 200 stations in the U.S. and Canada including KLOS in Los Angeles and KSAN in San Francisco. He also produces “The Hivecast with Matt Pinfield” which is a free podcast through iTunes and MTVHIVE.COM. Matt started a live streaming show to benefit MusiCares for the COVID-19 pandemic, called “In A Lonely Place with Matt Pinfield” featuring conversations with artists as diverse as Foster The People and Yungblud.Allison Hagendorf is the Global Head of Rock at Spotify, host of the brand new show on Spotify called Rock This, with Allison Hagendorf as well as a national television host/live announcer and music journalist. Bringing up the Superbowl at a Sunday BBQ is cool, but bringing up science is much less “socially acceptable”… Likewise, people read about politics and celebrity gossips, but why not the science section in newspapers and magazines? Is it just because science journalism is fundamentally less interesting? Or is it because our society lacks appreciation for science and intellectual discourse? Mr. Mike Lemonick is here to answer those questions and provide his insights on Trump’s latest science policies. Mike is Opinion Editor at Scientific American. He has written more than 50 Time magazine cover stories on science, and has written for National Geographic, The New Yorker and other publications. This interview will be co-hosted by both Tiger and Brian Kraus. Brian is a graduate student in Princeton and the host of “These Vibes Are Too Cosmic,” a talk radio program at Princeton’s WPRB 103.3 FM where experts share cutting-edge science research with listeners on and off campus. It’s truly a pleasure for Policy Punchline to collaborate with Brian on this interview and share his years of science knowledge and radio show hosting experience.

“Have you ever been adjudicated guilty or convicted of a misdemeanor, felony, or other crime?” For most high schoolers applying to college, they’ll have to this answer this question. Student activists at Princeton University, however, are trying to change that. Bill Lambusta and Brian Erick join Dan for a long overdue visit to the table to talk about their very successful podcast, 'The Great Albums'. Having known each other since college, playing in bands together, it makes perfect sense that these two music aficionados have a show like this, and stick to the maxim "Fans, Not Critics". The three talk about their favorite records, how they got into podcasting, and what the importance of music is to them all these years later.
In our season finale, you’ll listen to “sensory percussion,” an interview with Mona Khazindar from the Arab World Institute in Paris, more Iran’s recent election, an update from the CPUC naming committee, and a farewell from one of our departing seniors. Thanks to the Free Music Archive with Lobo Loco, as always. And thanks to Aaron Out for “Wawa Hoagies,” See you in the fall.
Who is Oshwa? What does it mean to be “woke?” What happens when a New Jersan moves to Arkansas? How does one say “I love you,” in Elvish? And what happens a 1000 person e-mail listserv meets an explosive debate about free speech? Photo: Music from Lobo Loco and Ketza from the Free Music Archive.
This time, we take a satirical look into what it is like to get accepted into an exclusive eating club at Princeton University, hear President Eisgruber speak in his first ever town hall meeting on February 24th, interview the band Bad Jazz, who performed here at WPRB, look into Princeton’s Day of Action on March 6th, speak to the creator of the latest podcast at Princeton University, and hear some original poetry. Also she is currently cooperating with Marco Casazza, violinist and physicist, on the relationship between art and science. She encourages the diffusion of her works worldwide (please visit her Imslp page). In this conversation Carlotta talks about her love of counterpoint, modes, and being a woman composer in today's world. Enjoy and share your comments below. On today's show, composer, alto saxophonist and the new Director of Jazz at Princeton University, Rudresh Mahanthappa. Rudresh Mahanthappa came out of Boulder Colorado, was educated by Berklee College of Music and DePaul, and received national attention not long after moving to New York in 1998 where he soon beginning collaborating with the then up-and-coming, now major jazz force, pianist Vijay Iyer. Besides making a series of major statements with Iyer, Mahanthappa has collaborated with guitarist Rez Abbasi and trumpeter Amir ElSaffar for some of the freshest and most-ground-breaking jazz releases of the last decade. He's won the yearly Downbeat Poll multiple times, has had a string of recordings under his own name for Innova, Pi Recordings and the Clean Feed label.and BIRD CALLS, honoring the work of Charlie Parker is his latest on the ACT Music label. Rudresh has reached out to the Princeton community, checking in with WPRB in Princeton, where DJs have been playing his music for over a decade. He dropped in to WPRB's studios late in his first semester teaching there, and was very warm and open, excitingly talking about his plans for the Princeton Jazz program but he also talks about learning his craft in primary school, taking the alto saxophone into the future, working with the elusive Bunky Green, losing a sax in Hurricane Sandy and what's next in his recording and performing career. Artists like Rudressh and Vijay Iyer and their many collaborators, as well as guitarist Mary Halvorson, pianist Matthew Shipp, bassist William Parker, flutist Nicole Mitchell, and still-vital elder statesmen like drummer Jack DeJohnette, composer Henry Threadgill and countless others are what make the weekly jazz show I program at WPRB-Princeton seem to endlessly rejuvenate, despite uninformed naysayers repeating that “jazz is dead” nonsense.
WPRB continues to cover the protest on Princeton University’s campus in the wake of Donald Trump’s election. This week, we go to a demonstration for the protection of undocumented students. Hayley meets former Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou. MC talks to Toronto hardcore duo Shahman. We hear a scary story by Katherine Frain. It’s Thanksgiving, but we still have reasons to be spooked. Thanks to the Free Music Archive and the Youtube Audio Library for sounds and songs in this episode. Shoutout to Porc Opine for their untitled song and Lizzie Miles for “My Pillow and Me” in Kate’s story, and Colin L Orchestra for “Doom.”
On today's show, violinist Diana Monroe. I spent most pf the 90s living in San Francisco and when I returned to my old home of Philadelphia around 2000, I was struck by how rich a pool of musical talent existed in Philadelphia, particularly across the world of Philadelphia jazz. A great place for talent spotting is in Bobby Zankel's incredible jazz orchestra, The Warriors of the Wonderful Sound a striking group led by saxophonist and composer Bobby Zankel whose numbers can swell to a dozen and beyond, all instrumentalists that can play the music to the highest standards. But for me, Diane's fiery and passionate violin playing always stood out as particularly beguiling and brilliant. Entering her name in Google and looking at her credentials informed me on how rich and varied her career has been, from leading the string quartet in Max Roch's ground-breaking Double Quartet, to playing with Wynton Marsalis and Yo Yo Ma and touring with Barbara Streisand, Monroe has been a first-rank session musician and in recent years has turned her attention to jazz improvisation. We finally got to sit down and have a conversation at the studios of WPRB to talk about her music and her life recently, we'll hear that conversation as well as sample her music, in duo with vibraphonist Tony Micelli, with Max Roach's Double Quartet, with The String Trio of New York and finally, alone with a solo piece. I was completely charmed talking the Diane and impressed at how completely she's committed herself to the music.

Episode 23: Cellist Tomeka Reid We caught our guest today composer and cellist Tomeka Reid in the midst of a career moment. She arrived in New York City from Chicago on January 1st 2016 to join her quartet for their NYC debut, just two days after Ben Ratliff described Reid in the NYTimes as “A new jazz power source.” Over the next two weeks she played with a dizzying number of the East Coast's established and up-and-coming talent in gigs and jam sessions in DC, Philadelphia and Connecticut. In the midst of all this activity we convinced Ms. Reid take the train down from New York to join us in the studios at WPRB, where I host a weekly jazz show. Ms. Reid moved from the D.C. area to Chicago in 2000 as has recorded with flutist (and former F2K guest) Nicole Mitchell, drummer Mike Reid, vocalist Dee Alexander and the elder statesmen Anthony Braxton and Roscoe Mitchell among others. Ms. Reid also co-leads the internationally recognized string trio, Hear in Now who have performed in Poland, Paris, Rome, Venice, Milan, Italy and Switzerland. Over the course of the conversation we talk about the three albums she had released in 2016, Her love of Chicago, her experiences at part of the legendary AACM collective of musical improvisers, teaching and touring, the importance of women mentors, the differences between the classical and jazz worlds and more. You'll also hear me at peak enthusiasm for the chance to speak with a musician whose work I was right in the midst of a music lover's habit of compulsive playing and replaying, they're such fresh and engaging releases that reward one's savoring.
As WPRB celebrates 75 years on the air, PAW Tracks looks back at the student experience at the radio station in interviews with two alumni: Sally Jacob’88, a former DJ and music director; and John Shyer ’78, who covered news for the station and eventually became station manager.
Our pal Jon Solomon is a DJ who can be heard every Wednesday evening across the Delaware Valley from 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm ET on 103.3 fm WPRB out of Princeton, NJ. We talk to him about the seminal Cusackian film, THE SURE THING. A silly romantic comedy with actual heart! Actual teenagers doing actual teenage things! WHOD'AH THUNK IT?! Ron Reiner, that's who. Join just, won't you?
On this show, we bring you excerpts from progressive journalist Chris Hedge’s recent visit to Princeton University. We’ll then bring you an inside-look at Princeton University Art Museum’s new exhibition on Cezanne. To end the hour, I’ll speak with WPRB’s station manager and development director about our upcoming fund-drive.
