It's no fun announcing an argument paper and being met by groans. If your students have arrived at your class afraid of essays, you're not the only one. And we all know, buy-in matters. When students are confronted with a task they're horrified by, it's hard for them to access their skills and motivation to do their best work. So what are you supposed to do when you hit the groan skid? Today I want to talk about some on-ramps and side paths to the argument highway. Visual tools and modern mediums to help you help your students realize argument isn't so scary. By the way, an extremely step-by-step process with lots of modeling is a classic go-to for breaking down the essay writing process and making it feel manageable, and I don't want to ignore that. Brainstorming. Outlining. Drafting. Peer editing. Self editing stations. Final drafting. That's all wonderful. But probably you do that already, and you're still here. So let's explore some other approaches you can use to complement that oh-so-valid step-by-step process that just doesn't always work to help kids get past their paper-writing fears.   Go Further:  Explore alllll the Episodes of The Spark Creativity Teacher Podcast. In this episode, Shellee and Mary Kate discuss: The importance of college essays in the admissions processWriting your college admissions essayThe value of having a college essay editor Key Takeaways: There is no guarantee that you will get into a top-notch school just because you have a high GPA. There is more to the admissions office's decision than just your grades and extracurricular activities; they are looking for an essay that truly reflects who you are, and a great essay can help set you apart from the other applicants.Do not let your parents or anyone else get in the way of presenting yourself in your college admissions essay. Trust your own choices – nothing beats being able to tell your own story and what's truly important to you by using your own voice and values. Authenticity is key. There's nothing wrong with having another set of eyes look over your essays. If possible, hire a college essay editor to help you increase your chances of being accepted into your dream school.  "Try to bulk up your conclusion or point yourself towards the future. Sometimes the endings can just be solid on their own" —  Mary Kate Hampton   About Mary Kate Hampton: Mary Kate's Master's degrees are in Writing, Literature, Publishing, and English Education. After working in publishers in Boston and New York, she began a teaching career in New York City. In this episode, Shellee and Andrea discuss: Andrea's passion for making a difference in young people's livesThe National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC)The truth about participating in summer enrichment programs Key Takeaways: Encourage your child to express their opinions and recognize their individuality. Young people today, more than ever, need to feel that they are important, that their voices and identities are valued. Sign your child up for a summer enrichment program. This will give them ideas about what it's like to be in college, as well as the skills and potential needed to make those important college decisions and realize how they want to contribute their gifts to the world.Teens feel included and gain trust and confidence in themselves only when they are facilitated in small groups where they are well supervised and their individual potentials are recognized. No summer program, no matter how good it is, will get students into a highly selective university, but it will help them write more compelling essays and incorporate their experiences into who they are as individuals. "I think the benefit of attending any summer enrichment program is it allows students wherever they are to come out of their comfort zone and to experience something new." —  Andrea Maldonado   About Andrea Maldonado: Andrea is the Director of International Admissions and Director of Educator Relations. She did her undergraduate studies at Colgate University. She served as a teaching fellow for America corpse in Texas.
