Episode SummaryIn this gripping episode of the GoMission podcast, Mark Gilmore sits down with Brother Somatai, a faithful church planter who is taking the gospel to regions where Christ is unknown. With no outside support and facing violent opposition, he shares how God has miraculously opened doors, healed the sick, and sustained his family through unthinkable trials. This is a story of bold obedience, miraculous provision, and a vision to bring the gospel to every village—no matter the cost.Topics DiscussedThe historical spread of the gospel in remote mountain villagesThe tragic decline of missionary vision among established churchesSomatai's personal call to frontier missions and language learningGoing unsupported and yet unwavering in obedienceMiraculous conversions and physical healings as God confirms His WordSevere persecution and the joy of suffering for ChristFaith-filled prayer, fasting, and sacrificial giving to purchase land for a central churchThe vision for house churches in unreached villagesThe essential role of a faith-filled spouse in enduring hardshipEncouragement to single young men: don't wait to obey God's callKey TakeawaysMission Begins with Burden: When Somatai's own brother told him not to come home because the gospel was already there, it sparked a fire to go where Christ had never been named.Miracles Still Happen: From a paralyzed woman miraculously healed to whole families coming to Christ, God confirms His Word in response to obedience.Joy in Persecution: Beaten and dragged by a mob, Somatai experienced an overwhelming joy and peace that mirrored the book of Acts.Faith Moves First: When his small church couldn't afford land, they prayed and fasted—then gave sacrificially. God provided every cent.God Uses the Small: Though his home churches offered no support, his example stirred one church to now support 13 missionaries.Partnership Matters: Long-term fruit often comes when a local visionary is empowered and encouraged by a faithful outsider.Obey Now: Don't wait until you're married to start serving God. Obedience paves the way for God to provide what you need, including a godly spouse. If you have your own unique story of gospel advance or if you sense God leading you toward a particular people group, we'd love to hear about it. But the topic that's resonated most for us personally and many of our members has been Insight team wellbeing and the ways we can all identify and help our colleagues to manage stress. Emma's conversation with new IMA associate Lara Meyer, recorded and shared at the July Insight forums and now available for all members to watch on the IMA website, explored many angles to this, including the critical importance of talking about wellbeing and giving our colleagues permission to raise it.Just back from Quirk's New York, we also recognise that this is a time of change for many Insight leaders and their teams, and it's never been more important to get ourselves up to 10,000 feet and look back down on our Insight teams in their organisations, and our organisations within their markets. We need that sense of perspective to figure out which ways of working are no longer fit for purpose, and when we should all learn to say no.Finally, we finish on a positive note. There is a lot of change in the air at the moment, with uncertainty for some over job roles, budgets and team activity. In today's episode, James and Lisa look at the reputation of our Insight teams, and how we need to manage it carefully to enhance our positioning. It's a bit like our companies obsessing about customer experience so that individual interactions don't undermine their corporate brand: we can say what we like about the purpose of our Insight teams, but their positioning will be fatally undermined if the practical experience of working with any of our colleagues gives a very different impression. There are two angles to this topic. First, how do we help our Insight teams to do things right? And second, how do we put processes in place to make sure we are doing the right things? In my experience, the first is often easier than the second, but unless we address both, we can reinforce the wrong assumptions that other departments make about the role of the Insight team.Remember the old joke? That poor organisations use Insight like a drunk uses a lamp post… more for support than illumination? (7.43)Making the use of Insight socially acceptable (11.18)Embracing behavioural economics (12.56)Highlights“As David Ogilvy is reported to have said, ‘The trouble with market research is that people don't think what they feel, they don't say what they think, and they don't do what they say'“A knowledge of behavioural biases can be just as useful to Insight teams who want to influence their stakeholders as to those who want to learn more about the drivers of consumer choice. It can help us to develop a list of handy tactics which we can use, almost irrespective of how well we know the decision-makers concerned. “The UK Nudge Unit have used the EAST framework to categorise behavioural biases, but there is a lot of merit in keeping things simple to start with and just using the four EAST factors themselves. If we want Insight to be influential, we have to make adopting our ideas Easy, Attractive, Socially acceptable and Timely.”This is episode 20 of the Transforming Insight podcast. If you have the ambition to transform your Insight team and the role it plays in your organisation, please tune in to future episodes. Several years ago, the IMA's Julia Joskey looked at ways we could all harness the power of our introverts. More recently, at the November 2022 Insight forums, Lisa Dutton explored the broader but related topic of managing Insight people in a post-pandemic world. In this episode we draw from both pieces of research - please listen to find out more!Topics DiscussedThe mix of introverts and extroverts in Insight teams (1.58)Corporate life isn't easy for introverts (3.28)How do we square these issue with the demands of influencing stakeholders? (5.30)Varying attitudes to in person and online events (8.27)The roles which effective leaders are playing in a post-pandemic world (10.51)Highlights“Psychologists think that about one in three of the population are more introvert than extrovert, and informal surveys and discussions at the IMA's Insight forums suggest that it's probably a far higher proportion of Insight specialists.”“Corporate life isn't always very comfortable for introverts. The problem is not us; the problem is that many of the working practices that have developed in our offices over the last few decades implicitly favour extroverts over introverts.”“A noticeable issue in recent months has been the varying degree to which leaders have grabbed the chance to come back to face-to-face forums or still prefer to sign up for online events; and another, the social awkwardness we sometimes see in more junior team members who have often joined their organisation during the lockdowns.”This is episode 19 of the Transforming Insight podcast. If you have the ambition to transform your Insight team and the role it plays in your organisation, please tune in to future episodes. With all the things that we've got sat there ready to go, this is the time we can see what the business needs, that maybe it hasn't realised yet. We should be turning all these residual contracted tools we have at our disposal to really help the business navigate this pandemic and work out what we can do.”“This idea of “Lead Husky” - the Insight leading the business. Going into the fresh snow, no one wants to be this sort of husky in the back. You want to be the husky at the front, really plowing through the fresh snow, working out what, and where, the opportunities are.”“So much of the past data ceased to be relevant for the data science models. But by joining together the strengths of the different sides of the Insight function, you could really put Insight in a far better place in your business, and a better place to understand what might happen next.”“If you can embed things like always taking time to join the dots at the end of the project. Think: Which are the stakeholders that could do with hearing this story? How does this new finding relate to things that we've seen in the past? How is it contradicting it? These are the times when more interesting things emerge, aren't they? But you need to build in time for that."This is episode 14 of the Transforming Insight podcast. If you have the ambition to transform your Insight team and the role it plays in your organisation, please tune in to future episodes. (5.41)The Insight manager skillset (6.52)Taking your time (9.23)The need for effective processes (10.58)Highlights“Insight farming appeals to many on a cultural level, as well as offering obvious cost savings by cutting out project duplication.”“In a perfect world I would like to believe that everyone in an Insight team should take part; the distillation, crystallisation, and recording forming an integral part of each project. However, there are two problems with this: time and talent.”“It's particularly important to identify contradictions between the outputs from related pieces. Contradictions don't necessarily mean that either piece of work was wrong – they may just reflect different data sources or different moments in time – but identifying contradictions is key to deciding whether the big picture that has emerged from a range of previous pieces is now out of date, or whether a more nuanced view is now appropriate.”“If recording insights and joining the dots is everyone's second most important task, then it tends to get pushed to the very end of the week by the more urgent task of hunting for new insights.”This is episode 11 of the Transforming Insight podcast. If you have the ambition to transform your Insight team and the role it plays in your organisation, please tune in to future episodes. What happens next in an Insight project will depend on the question you have identified and the sources of information and data collection available to you. It's the mindset of the detective. Topics DiscussedThe importance of hypotheses? (1.54)Joining up across multiple sources (4.32)The requirement to form opinions (7.27)Technical skills are critical but not transformative (9.34)The iterative nature of Insight investigations (11.24)Highlights“Insight teams tend to adopt a common mindset regardless of whether they are data analysts or market researchers. It's the mindset of the detective.”“We need to spend as long trying to disprove our hypotheses as we do trying to validate them. But we are still better off starting with hypotheses and adapting them to the data as we go along than starting with a blank sheet of paper and hoping for a Eureka! moment.”“There is a classic trade-off between wanting to drill into more and more of the detail supported by our favourite data source and remembering that Insight projects have to address the overall business issue.”“Technical skills are really important for Insight teams, and developing great analytic skills or keeping up with the latest research methodologies is a requirement for all Insight teams. But it's a hygiene requirement; in itself it's not going to transform the performance of your Insight team, that happens when we change our mindset and reframe the way we define our roles.” This is episode 9 of the Transforming Insight podcast. If you have the ambition to transform your Insight team and the role it plays in your organisation, please tune in to future episodes. Does the idea of making up the numbers fill you with horror? It shouldn't… making up the numbers, in other words becoming comfortable with estimation techniques and focusing on accuracy rather than precision, is actually a critical skill for everyone in Insight. It supports agile decision-making, forces you to explain your assumptions, and facilitates constructive conversations with others who are trying to solve business problems.Topics DiscussedThe difference between accuracy and precision (3.23)Back of an envelope intelligent guesswork (4.47)How to handle big numbers (6.27)A technique to help our mental maths (7.48)How many Insight directors do you need to size the toothpaste market? (10.05)Highlights“To support agile decision-making, our senior stakeholders often need answers fast, even if it's just ‘something to work with'. So, for every decision, a trade-off needs to be made between insights based on perfect data and agile decisions. This middle ground is where the most workable solutions are found.”“In many instances, an accurate range of outcomes is far more useful in Insight than a precise number that will almost certainly never be right and might well give a false impression of confidence.”“This bit might surprise you, but we actually want our stakeholders to challenge our assumption. This is because our stakeholders may be in a better position to supply an accurate figure, but also because being transparent about our assumptions helps us to work collaboratively with others and get to better answers.”“What I hope becomes clear from a very simple example like this, is that even if we have no prior knowledge of a topic, we can arrive at a perfectly reasonable estimate if we use Facts, Assumptions and Logic.”This is episode 6 of the Transforming Insight podcast. If you have the ambition to transform your Insight team and the role it plays in your organisation, please tune in to future episodes. With no exaggeration, it can be said that there has never been a greater opportunity for Insight teams to transform the performance of an entire organisation.”“I think that the increase in available data and ways in which it could be manipulated, together with the ever-expanding demand from decision-makers, have combined to make Insight teams more task-focused. We are doing more and more analysis and research, but in itself, this doesn't make our companies Insight-driven. Welcome and thank you for checking in at the Inner Game of Change Podcast where I focus on exploring the multi layers of managing organisational change. My guests cover a diverse number of critical topics to enable effective and sustainable change in the workplace. My guest today is Michael Brown, An award-winning author, a CEO, a wonderful human and so many other great things. A respected international author of the Gold Award Winning book I Don't Agree and a tenacious CEO who tries every day to live his values and deliver community value. I am grateful to have Michael discussing his book with me today.   Topics discussedThe positive effect of disagreementThe continuous battle between competing and collaborating The pride diet Behaviour SwitchesThe attribution biasValues before skillsThe pyramid of choiceDisagreement as an agent for changeMichael's ongoing to disagree authenticallyAnd much moreAbout Michael (In his own words)TENACIOUS, CREATIVE, OPTIMISTIC, ENTREPRENEURIAL, KIND.These are the qualities I most admire in others. I've tried to cultivate them in myself. I've not always lived up to them, but I remain aspirational. For me, it's these qualities that come in most handy when you set out to achieve a dream. Which is useful; because having a vision and finding a way to make it happen is what excites me most. When I was (much) younger I was in a band. We had the usual big ambitions. But…I raised a bit of money from local businesses, started an indie record label and signed my band to it. That action eventually led to me securing not one, but two, major recording contracts during my twenties. While I have amazing memories of a time spent largely on the road, ultimately, we never sold enough music to maintain a major label deal – even though I was a sticker in Smash Hits (my mum still has it on her toilet door) and in an era before Spotify, the tunes we wrote were frequent visitors to the airwaves. In the death of that dream I learned a valuable lesson;Creativity without the entrepreneurship, tenacity and sheer optimism to bring whatever you create to an audience is wasteful.Tenacity is crucial. In life and business, many people have the power to say NO. Getting to a YES requires a wider consultation with a larger constituency of people. That usually means ‘yes' decisions happen less often. If you wanted to fly a hot air balloon through the raised drawer bridges of Tower Bridge as I have, or kickstart the world's first mental health drop-in centre inside a soup kitchen, you have to have to keep communicating and collaborating; to keep asking the questions that will get you a big fat YES. This is the quality that I hope to contribute to an endeavour.I'd like to think I've now honed my entrepreneurial instincts to a point where they're proven – I've been a long-term managing director of an award-winning, high growth advertising agency and founded another creative business that is now an international organisation of renown – we've won an agency of the year accolade 6 times in 8 years. As for optimism – well, in any mission you embark on, you need to believe the horizon is bathed in sunshine, or why head there at all?And kindness? I sometimes fall short.BUT...I'm a homelessness charity trustee and a soup kitchen volunteer. I believe in equality of opportunity. I sit on our LGBTQ+ steering committee and I'm an activist. Welcome to this episode of the IEP with Jodie Hawkins. Jodie is currently the General Manager of the Sydney Sixers and has been part of the team that has helped the club been one of the most successful in WBBL and BBL history. The reason I wanted to get her on is that the culture built at the sixers is one that prioritizes giving back - whether it's pride rounds or supporting cancer patients, Jodie has helped build a brand that clearly prioritises building a legacy beyond the cricket pitch, a big difference to the traditional model that is based on sponsorship deals with companies with big platforms, paying big money. The sixers also prioritize good characters in their recruitment, seeing the human before the athlete has helped unlock performance both on and off the field. A lot of what we talk about in the performance space is about shifting perspective.  Shifting away from finding purpose in being individually successful, to finding purpose in helping others. It's also about making sure we don't get caught up in the crazy world of professional sport and maintain our perspective on what is really important. Topics DiscussedThe importance of social impact in creating a successful sports business How to get the best out of people through allowing them to be authentic and create a feeling of belongingHow the Sixers go about recruitment by prioritizing character traitsThe importance of values and how the Sixers go about developing them to actually have an impact What makes Greg Shepperd one of the most successful coaches in T20 cricketHow to go about delisting playershe growth of the WBBL and how the Sixers have learnt from mistakes made early in the competitionHow Jodie deals with failure as someone who is extremely passionateHow standing still is dangerousLinkshttp://linkedin.com/insideedgeprojecthttp://instagram.com/insideedgeprojecthttp://twitter.com/insideedgeproj

Podcast Content for Part 3 of 4: Concerning Utah's statehood story, the oft heard quote comes to mind, attributed to German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, who said: “laws and sausage, if they are to be enjoyed, should never be watched made.”Lyman's well written book argues for the opposite: knowing the stories behind political actions are essential to a vibrant and strong democracy.  Lyman's “sausage making” history which spans over fifty year in 19th century Utah and the United States, reveals many significant historical insights useful to both modern Utahns and Americans.  It is also a complex, elusive story, that has been largely untold until now.Podcast #3 of 4 - Topics DiscussedThe work of the US Congress created Utah Commission is described. There is a gradual erosion of public support across Utah for the principle of polygamy.Lawyer and founder of Utah's Democratic Party (1872) Hadley D. Johnson, who has lived among the Mormons since 1869, offers a noteworthy prediction regarding Utah society and its gradual movement away from polygamy. General John A. McClernand (Democrat and Utah Commission member) offers a series of astute observations that essentially become true about Utah. The diametrically apposing public decisions regarding the continued practice of polygamy by two well-known Mormons: Bishop John Sharp (leader of the People Party and Union Pacific Railroad board member) and Rudger Clawson (whose Supreme Court case Clawson v. United States, resolved the claim that polygamy was protected for the First Amendment). US Congressional acts, and US Supreme Court uphold an anti-polygamy voting oath in Idaho, thus making it clear that such laws when applied in the Utah Territory, will disenfranchise all practicing Mormons, if they practice polypamy or not.    Salt Lake Tribune and a handful of Utah mining magnates fight to disenfranchise all Mormons, arguing that only law abiding, non-Mormon citizens, should control Utah's political life. Do you have a question or comment, or a proposed guest for “Speak Your Piece?” Write us at “ask a historian” – askahistorian@utah.gov To purchase a copy of Dr. Lyman's book go to Signature Book's website or order a copy from your local bookstore.

Persistence and perseverance is fuel in your tank for the long haul. You know that feeling when the newness and excitement of a goal starts to fade? You're facing this long runway with hurdles to jump and curveballs to duck. Perseverance is essential to success. AKA: when the long-haul of work sets in.We all experience it. Being excited in the beginning is easy, whether it's a new year, new goal, new week, new day. Persistence in daily habits that help your creativity, business, and life is the key to achieving your goals. Immersing in InspirationThis Coffee Break was inspired by an interview we listened to with two well known successful entrepreneurs we admire and follow. Chase Jarvis and Lewis Howes are podcasters and creators who have experienced the ups and downs of achieving goals, setting new goals, and everything in-between. We always advocate tuning into the stories behind successful creators because it helps to put our own journey in perspective. We're constantly listening to content from those who are ahead of us in some area so that we can sharpen our mindsets, learn, and level up our own efforts. Almost every “overnight success” story took years to reach. Success is a failure-laden path. Learning from those who've been there and done that reminds us that our own success, whatever it looks like, is within reach. Topics DiscussedThe long haul of goal achievement Deadlines Highs and lows of accomplishment The journey of becoming great Big vision goals Goals aren't just for business “The journey is about maturing in one's efforts to pursue and achieve one's aspirations.” ~ LeAura Alderson, cofounder-iCreateDaily   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTwRWmfxDzM (Your Biggest Fears are Holding You Back) https://www.icreatedaily.com/creative-challenges/ (iCreateDaily Creative Challenges) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtjBkwllI4E/ (Photos from Eeva's first New York solo art show!)   https://icreatedailypodcast.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Goal-Setting-Quotes.jpg ()   A podcast for creators serious about your art.https://www.icreatedaily.com/free-goals-planner/ (The Day is the Way.)iCreateDaily!

5 Ways to Nurture Your Doc LifeThere are many ways that we documentary filmmakers take care of ourselves, or perhaps maybe more aptly put, do not take care of ourselves. And with the long hours, sometimes limited budgets, sometimes other day jobs, family life, you name it.. it's no wonder that we doc lifers sometimes tend to neglect our emotional and physical well being.   Which is why I'm here to give you a little primer to help steer you back to the path of emotional, physical, and creative success in your own doc life.   Podcast ConversationDocumentary filmmaker (and big proponent of meditation!), Rebecca Dreyfus joined me in our shared Conversation. Dreyfus has been working in documentary for 20 years, since her first feature, Bye-Bye Babushka first came on the scene and was quickly noticed by documentary legend, Albert Maysles, who would then go on to be lead camera in Dreyfus' critically-acclaimed follow-up, Stolen.  A mentorship would soon blossom from this collaboration.   Dreyfus' current documentary film, http://onmeditation.com/ (On Meditation), takes a look at the age-old practice of meditation as told through the eyes of established names who attribute the practice to much of their personal and professional success.   Topics Discussedthe value of true persistence as a documentary filmmaker the importance of a mentor and how to go about finding one key advice for first-time documentary filmmakers what part the practice of meditation plays in the creative process   Related Resources° Watch the trailer for Rebecca Dreyfus' https://vimeo.com/ondemand/onmeditation (On Meditation) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1_g5F_mp14   ° Trailer for the acclaimed documentary film http://stolenthefilm.com/ (Stolen ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VG0-st-5H6E   #DocLifer of the Week As mentioned in our #DocLifer Community Question of the Week, check out the trailer for fellow #DocLifer, Jaime's current documentary project, http://www.mahjongmovie.com/ (Masters of Mahjong) https://vimeo.com/220673394   Sponsors & Thank You'shttp://freemusicarchive.org/ (Free Music Archive) – Special Thank You to recording artist, http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Dlay/ (Dlay) who supplied the song Whatever for this week's episode of TDL. One of the often overlooked elements to a documentary filmmaker's footage is their https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B-roll (B-roll). And the biggest reason that I have to make this assumption is the copious amounts of really really bad looking B-roll that is out there in the world. Hell, there was even an amazing viral video a few years back all about this! (see below)   So in this episode we explore what works and certainly what does not when it comes to shooting B-roll for your doc, including a list of tips that can make your B-roll be the best damn b-roll it can be!   Topics Discussedthe importance of a good tripod head & sticks how to achieve quality exposition shots incorporating B-roll as counterpoint to an interviewee's dialogue drone shots & dolly moves   Podcast Conversation I was proud to be joined by two extraordinary individuals who have made a name for themselves in the commercial and documentary world. Through their post production outfit, http://www.coatofarmspost.com/ (Coat of Arms), http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2831402/ (Jonathan Lacocque) and http://www.wvcommerce.org/news/story/Tuesday-Crew-Day-Jonathan-Lacocque--Clara-Lehmann/4529/default.aspx (Clara Lehmann), produce creative ideas for their clients, make their own documentary films, and raise their family. And they have found a way to do all of these things from their tiny little slice of http://www.pbs.org/mythsandheroes/myths_four_shangrila.html (Shangri-La), also known as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helvetia,_West_Virginia (Helvetia, West Virginia, USA).   Related Resources ° We Got That B-roll! The amazing viral sensation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SItFvB0Upb8   ° Watch Jon and Clara'a short film Called Home: https://vimeo.com/202485637   ° Watch http://www.aperfectsoldier.com/trailer.html (A Perfect Soldier) in its entirety: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBXpTbDmbHc   ° Watch http://www.coatofarmspost.com (Coat of Arms)‘ Lullaby Theories: Same Same But Different https://vimeo.com/209282871   Subscribehttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-documentary-life/id1112679868 (Apple) | https://open.spotify.com/show/0wYlYHJzyk3Y7fHzDDwvmp (Spotify) | https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/thedocumentarylife/the-documentary-life (Stitcher) |  Rate and ReviewIf you have found value in this podcast please leave a review so it can become more visible to others. Simply click the https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/documentary-life-filmmaking-documentary-films-documentary/id1112679868?mt=2 (link) and then click on the Ratings and Reviews tab to make your entry. Thank you for your support!
