About Susan: Her family are refugees from the Vietnam War, escaping to California in the 1980s after five failed attempts. Her mother successfully opened two nail salons, and life seemed to be going just fine, until one day when Susan was 11. Her mother died suddenly from a botched tummy tuck, with little mention of the incident even at her funeral. So, for the next twenty years, Susan looked for answers about what happened, and also why her mother felt the need to change her body. Did she struggle with body image issues? Was it pressure? Susan finally uncovered some disturbing facts, and which we will talk with her about, as well as the impossible ideal of beauty. Please join me in conversation with Susan Lieu about grief, trauma, and determination to get to the truth. And invite your friends, too. Susan describes her childhood as the daughter of Vietnamese refugees in California. Then she talks about her savvy and charismatic mother, who, after setting up two successful nail salons, died from a botched tummy tuck when Susan was only eleven. Susan describes her long journey to understand her mother's untimely, traumatizing death—from memory, through detective work, and even by spirit conjuring. She also talks about her own struggles with body image, her relationship with her family members, and the challenges of navigating intergenerational trauma. Fresh off the Bezos boat of Bitcoin #ETF's and who the fuck cares, I went to the Zoolander DAIE spa for a claw manicure to ward off my stalker. Much to my deep disturbance, Manicurist is leaving the manicure industry to focus solely on her career as a perp trading influencer on #dYdX v4. I asked her why I would ever engage in peer-to-peer trading when my peers are largely sophisticated pseudo ivy league educated jewel-smoking narcissistic alcoholic Adderall fueled contemporaries who would no sooner spill my darkest secrets in exchange for a spot at Horace Man for their offspring. Unclear. The notion on Notion that my (father's) hard earned cash is better managed by SushiSwap over the light sex trafficking accused  meaninglessly regulated tradFi institution is beyond my realm of comprehension.Ipso facto, With #ZeroKnowledge Alcohol proof, I must continue on my God appointed quest to solve Jon Benet Ramsey's murder with my #baccarat magnifying glass as well examine peer to peer trading and kreepto derivs.Alas, I am pleased to have decorated crème de la creme Advanced Sales and Strategy expert Mr. Kyle Trimble Kyle is a web3 Don Draper. He has been divinely blessed by his ability to make every cold prospect his deepest most treasured friend and his best men will encompass the entire defunct Genesis trading desk. He is a Renaissance man, what with is his burgeoning underground DJ career and Degen Solana Shitcoin trading strategies reminiscent of RainMan. Every single respectable woman of crypto, of which there are 12, has a deep seated unhealthy sexual obsession with Kyle, and it is for good reason; Here's my backstory. I met Kyle in the late 90s in the height of high frequency commoditized Somalian children trading during the children's Men's Fashion Week in Milano. Neither of us were chosen in the final round to walk the runway, a freakish decision -what with Kyles impossibly high cheek bones and lithe European figure, and my sporadic bulimia and keen ability to speak inflected mob like 4th grade Italian re Donatella Margherita Missoni Pizza grazie mille. Even though our failed modeling careers were a personal affront, I went on to pursue an intellectual career in beverage commercial work. Kyle is nearly single handedly responsible for making The Tie a household name while still maintaining an impressive following in the house music underground club circuit of Medellin where he cannot get a Sangria without being accosted. His most recent prestigious day job includes trading derivatives of derivatives of kreepto at Kemet Trading. During this episode, Kyle corrects many of my fervent misunderstandings.Per example, #KeanuReeves is not associated with Matrixport, being cheap fast and easy only works on Solana and in Dubai, and Delta Hedging has nothing to do with sorority and fraternity pledging.

163. That Time I Did My Friends' Nails for Prom (Sales Can be Fun!)

The Game On Girlfriend Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 14, 2023 18:03

Happy Valentine's Day! I love this day. It's fun. It's cute! I made heart-shaped pancakes for my kids and dyed them red! (I know, I have issues.) The other reason I love this day is that the wait list for the Sales Mastermind is open! I LOVE sales. (You can learn more about the six-month Sales Mastermind program and join the wait list at: https://www.sarahwalton.com/salesmastermind/) I was a guest on a podcast interview a few weeks ago, and the host asked me if I was one of those annoying people who always knew how to sell. Spoiler: I was. We started talking about the scrunchies I made in elementary school, and then she had me share a story I'd completely forgotten about: To buy my prom dress, I did all my friends' nails for prom. Who knew? Sales coach. Intuitive businesswoman. Manicurist extraordinaire. (And heart-shaped pancake maker, can't forget that!) My childhood was busy, and we were not well off. It was a playground for me to learn grit and understand how I could thrive in a world not designed to have someone like me succeed.  There were people in my life who helped and supported me, but I was often left alone to sort of watch what was happening, which gave me one of my greatest skills: how to read people. I learned how to observe others and see what they needed.  In the town I live in now, you can't throw a cat without hitting a nail salon. I grew up in a different type of environment. I would look at my friends pushing their cuticles back. Others would bite their nails. We would have nail painting parties. And eventually, the drug store started selling nail extension kits. I asked my friends on the dance team if they'd like me to do their nails for prom for $5. (I think the kit cost $4, which allowed me to do three people.) It was hard at first. I thought I should only charge what the kit was worth. But then I realized I had to do this for them. I had to be there. That's my time and energy, and it's my artwork.  It was spending time with them, making them happy, and letting me help them feel amazing. We had so much fun. I remember we had a sleepover a couple of days before prom. There was a line of girls around the kitchen counter waiting to get their nails done. I had such a wonderful time. We were talking about different things. I met some of the girls I didn't know very well. I remember sitting there at that point and thinking, "this is what it's like to run a business." It was the first time I'd sold to the point that I could afford something that I normally couldn't afford: my prom dress. It was black velvet with royal blue satin puffy sleeves. I got shoes dyed the same royal blue to match the sleeves. I'm sharing this story on Valentine's Day when we open the Sales Mastermind waitlist because it shows what sales are when done with heart. At no point when I was sitting at that kitchen counter did I think, "yes, give me your money." We were all having a blast. They were excited to show their parents and their dates. It wasn't an outrageous expense for them. I was able to buy a dress I loved (on sale!). I bought it from my work because I wasn't afraid to say, "Hey, can I help you with that." To me, that is the art of selling. Selling has never been about trying to separate someone from their money. It's never about trying to be tricky. It's never about "how much money can I make? Or how many successes can I get in?" I just wrapped up one of the last calls of the current Sales Mastermind cohort. We had so much fun and had a mic-drop moment. One of the participants said, "Wait a minute. I will never sell like a salesperson," and I thought, "Oh my gosh, there it is!" It was so funny. We were all laughing.  From day one, I teach the women in this group how to understand their value. I teach them how to understand what their unique selling proposition [https://youtube.com/live/vvF9ytgcuZ8] is, how to write emails that don't sound smarmy, how to share from the heart, and how to look at somebody who needs something and go, "Oh my gosh, can I help you with that? I would love to help you with that." So, if sales freaks you out, if you're like, "I just want to help people. I don't want to be sales-y," come and join us. You know what, we don't do sales-y, we do fun, we do a lot of laughing. Yes, there's strategy, but it's the strategy that will teach you to see how valuable what you have to offer is to other people. Don't you think we deserve to go out into the world, love people, change their lives, and make them feel amazing? I think we do. And it's okay for us to understand that that value should help us sustain a living. On this Valentine's Day, one of the best gifts you give yourself is the ongoing knowledge that what you do matters and that you have everything you need to share those gifts and talents with the world. We are joined today by the one and only Deborah Lippmann. Deborah is the go-to manicurist for an awe-inspiring list of celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey, Lupita Nyong'o, Laura Dern, Martha Stewart, and Lady Gaga and renowned fashion houses from Vogue, InStyle, W, Vanity Fair and Elle to Donna Karan, Rodarte, Narciso Rodriguez, Marchesa and Versace to name a few. After years of experience in the industry, her eponymous line of lacquers and treatments for nails, hands and feet is as coveted as her incredible talent. Deborah's success as one of the most sought- after manicurists in the world, as well as an innovative entrepreneur, has an interesting origin in her passion for and pursuit of music. Her first love was music, and with dreams of becoming a jazz singer, Deborah belted out sultry tunes in smoky clubs by night while working various jobs by day. Eventually, Deborah enrolled in cosmetology school where she discovered a hidden talent and her second love – nails. Working closely with some of the biggest names among celebrities, editors, fashion designers and models, Deborah quickly identified the need for a diverse range of nail colors and luxury care products, which was missing in the market. It was at that moment that Deborah set out to create her own line high-quality nail lacquers and treatments with her unique fashion point of view. Established in 1999, deborah lippmann was founded on an ethos of quality meets care. Informed by her years in the red carpet, fashion runways, and editorial shoots, the award-winning brand reflects her ultra-high standards in terms of product performance and is crafted to nourish and support nails and skin. The brand is in expansion mode, with exciting plans for continuous growth, including her recent step into the cosmetics industry with her new lip gloss. In this episode, Deborah recalls her journey and explains how she got into manicuring, while also pursuing her dreams in music as a jazz singer. She explains how she landed celebrity clients, what it's like to work in high pressure environments, how she thrives under stress and rituals that she has set for herself when it comes to work. She also narrates her encounter and amazing relationships with Sher, Martha Stewart and Lady Gaga. As a successful entrepreneur Deborah gives insights to her definition of success and happiness and offers advice for those who want to start their own business, finding your passions and how to make your dreams a reality. We end the episode with Deborah's helpful tips for beginners on how to do at home manicures and answers questions when it comes to nail care, cuticles and nail polish and emphasizes on the importance of patience and washing your hands. Meet Marian Newman aka THE Queen of Nails. No, literally, the nail expert was recently awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to the beauty industry during Covid-19, and she knows so much about nails, she even launched an online diploma program last month! Marian’s nail artistry has graced the tips of everyone from Kate Moss to Lady Gaga – she’s even written tomes showcasing her backstage-worthy, eye-popping manicures, along with technical textbooks on nail anatomy and salon safety. Today, Marian joins us on the pod to chat about the budget hand cream that really works, along with the nail polishes that wear the longest without chipping. Then, find out why she believes that at-home UV gel manicures and those viral “burst” gel-polish removers are a massive “Don’t”. Plus, Marian breaks down the *brand new*, crack-filling innovation from CND called Plexigel that's legit the biggest thing to hit the nails category since Shellac. Anyone interested in beauty products has come across the name Deborah Lippmann before, but few folks know the backstory. She’s made such a name for herself as a celebrity manicurist, and launched her own line of nail polish at the encouragement of such wonders as Mariah Carey, that it’s nearly impossible to think that her start in the beauty world was simply a way to make ends meet while she worked on her passion for music. A move to New York brought everything together, however, as Deborah found herself working among the likes of Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier, and working with celebrity clientele soon after. It was her knack for color customization, however, that made her a standout among clients and beauty editors. Deborah’s eye for color enabled her to create shades that couldn’t be found anywhere else. Although it hadn’t been her original goal, Deborah let her clients lead the way, and their insistence that she create her own line officially took her from manicurist to entrepreneur. Ever responsive to her customers needs, Deborah Lippmann products are now celebrated as some of the best in the business. These days, everyone from Lady Gaga to Taylor Swift is clamoring to collaborate on custom shades for the line! Thanks for listening! We love our listeners! In this episode of the Road to Growth podcast, we are pleased to introduce you to Lisa Sivak. Lisa is the founder and owner of the Upper Hand Spa Salon. As a little girl Lisa was always mesmerized by hairstylists and makeup artists. She loved to watch them create. At 17 she enrolled in Cosmetology school through a grant program. Well, the lost little girl she was at the time she didn't last long and dropped out after only a month. Beauty school dropout. Then about a year later and a tiny bit of maturing she decided sh wanted to be a make-up artist but couldn’t afford to relocate to LA. So she found that the Esthetician program also taught make-up. So again she enrolled in a Cosmetology school. This time she finished and got her license for facials, waxing and make-up. She began working as an esthetician. She then found she was drawn to the nail area in the salon. Once again she headed back to Cosmetology school, she graduated from the manicuring program at the top of my class and Manicurist of the month. During this time she married the man that would love and support her through the many crazy phases of being a salon professional and entrepreneur for the last 30 plus years. She emphasis “crazy”. You must be a bit crazy to be self employed! She did not have the most secure childhood. Her parents got pregnant on accident and then married because you know that was the right thing to do. Well surprise surprise that didn’t end well. She experienced the hate and fighting between her parents. The bashing of one another. She lived mainly with her mom that was just a kid herself. She was bounced between her and my grandparents or left with her friends. She never felt like she belonged anywhere but learned resilience and adaptability. She also lost her voice from the shame and confusion of being repeatedly molested by multiple boys at one of the homes she was left at. Her mom’s friend was a foster parent to teen boys. Not an appropriate place for an innocent 7 or 8-year-old little girl. At 12 she was literally dropped off in my Dad’s driveway with all my stuff, unbeknownst to me in the middle of his 2nd marriage that was falling apart. She was left there by herself to live when he started dating and moved in with his girlfriend (now his wife of 30 something years). She searched for love and acceptance in the wrong places. She partied, had boyfriends and all the adult stuff she was not ready for. She got pregnant at 14 and had an abortion. I spent years beating myself and searching for everything she didn’t have. She made a lot of choices (She doesn’t call them mistakes)she is not proud of. Hurt a lot of people along the way. It took her until recently, maybe the last 2-3 years before she finally can say “I am proud of who I am”. From those bad choices and experiences she want to empower others especially women that have had adversity in their lives. She want to make a difference in someones life even if it is to take their cares away for an hour of care and pampering. Learn more and connect with Lisa Sivak a by visiting heron Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lisabreathes/ on Website: www.theupperhandspasalon.com on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheUpperHandSpaSalon/ on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theupperhandspasalon/ Be sure to follow uson Twitter: Twitter.com/to_growthon Facebook: facebook.com/Road2Growth Subscribe to our podcast across theweb: https://www.theenriquezgroup.com/blog Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2Cdmacc iTunes: https://apple.co/2F4zAcn Castbox: http://bit.ly/2F4NfQq Google Play: http://bit.ly/2TxUYQ2 Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JwTLX0I09-X1XN-Xv1h_Q?view_as=subscriber For any San Diego Real Estate Help please visit:Website: https:www.TheEnriquezGroup.comYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKnzMRkl-PurAb32mCLCMeA?view_as=subscriber
