The religious landscape of the United States is changing dramatically. Americans must consider what it means to govern a nation of religious minorities. We interview Dr. Robert P. Jones, the founding CEO of the Public Religion Research Institute. Jones discusses findings from PRRI's national surveys on religion and public life, many of which are represented in the American Values Atlas. The data collected by PRRI reveal a number of surprising trends related to religion and its intersection with politics, voting patterns, age, race, immigration, and secularism in the United States. A few key findings highlighted in PRRI's 2016 report on America's changing religious identity and covered in this podcast: (1) white Christians now account for fewer than half of the public, (2) white evangelical Protestants are in decline, (3) non-Christian religious groups are growing, and (4) atheists and agnostics account for a minority of all religiously unaffiliated. We discuss the implications of these findings and more, and we briefly review the research methodologies utilized by PRRI.

My guest today is Robert P. Jones. He's the CEO of the Public Religion Research Institute, and the author of several books, including "The End of White Christian America." The American religious landscape is undergoing a dramatic transformation. White Christians, once the dominant religious group in the U.S., now account for fewer than half of all adults living in the country. Today, fewer than half of all states are majority white Christian. As recently as 2007, 39 states had majority white Christian populations. These are two of the major findingsfrom PRRI’s 2016 American Values Atlas, the single largest survey of American religious and denominational identity ever conducted. This landmark report is based on a sample of more than 101,000 Americans from all 50 states and includes detailed information about their religious affiliation, denominational ties, political affiliation, and other important demographic attributes. With Halloween 2016 less than a week away from this episode, Jeff and Allen discuss the evolution of Satan.  Depending on our religious upbringing we may take for granted that the existence of Satan is a forgone conclusion.  But is it?  What does the Bible say about Satan?  Does the Bible have a consistent narrative about Satan?  What other things outside of scripture have we unwittingly accepted as fact regarding the prince of darkness?  These are some of the questions we answer.  And finally for our segment this week, Jeff and Allen reminisce about their favorite Halloween costumes and memories.   Evolution of Satan Conversation (02:26) Halloween Favorites Segment (50:41)   ANNOUNCEMENTS On Friday we will be posting another Divine SINema bonus episode.  In our Divine SINema offerings Jeff, Adam & Dylan watch bad Christian movies so you don’t have to.  This time around we will be talking about God’s Not Dead 2. How do we engage America’s religious pluralism as a force for the common good? David Gergen will report the findings of a new report, “Principled Pluralism: Report of the Inclusive America Project,” prepared by a distinguished panel convened by the Institute’s Justice and Society Program. Gergen will describe how America’s religious diversity is a source of civic engagement and how we can bridge religious differences to build a stronger social fabric. The sad legacy of religious diversity around the globe has been conflict. Yet, in the United States, we have largely escaped this fate. After the Boston Marathon bombing, will our luck still hold? The report provides good news and a roadmap for the way forward. Speakers: David Gergen, Meryl Chertoff, E. J. Dionne, Jr.

In the late 19th century Japanese religion was forever transformed by a government fiat declaring that Buddhism and Shinto were two separate religious traditions. This political order, officially distinguishing the deities, rituals, images, texts, and clergy of the two traditions, sought to erase and redefine the religious landscape of the previous millennium. The institutional and ideological effects of this action are still felt today in the common understanding of Buddhism and Shinto as individual and separate religions. To reveal the hidden history of Japanese religion and illuminate an obscured past that continues to inform our understanding of the present, this talk introduces and illustrates the complex relations between Buddhist and Shinto traditions in Japan. D. Max Moerman is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Cultures at Barnard College, Columbia University. He is the author of Localizing Paradise: Kumano Pilgrimage and the Religious Landscape of Premodern Japan (Harvard, 2005) and the forthcoming Geographies of the Imagination: Buddhist Cosmology and the Japanese World Map, 1364-1865.
