A reflection on why I started out on this project and a description of the CV consult service... The more time I spend podcasting and debriefing with health professionals on either side of the interview panel – the more I understand that there is a significant knowledge gap for clinicians transitioning into hospital and community work or new graduates applying to hospital and community jobs for the first time… Thankfully, when it comes to interviewing for hospital and community jobs the difference between candidates is marginal and a relatively small bit of the right preparation goes a long way… If you are interested in some help for an upcoming application or want feedback on a recent application - get in contact at https://healthlinked.org/contact/

A discussion here on the benefits and barriers to hosting students at your workplace in private practice, community and aged care... In many states there is a 'hangover' of students requiring placements to meet graduation requirements. There are also many accounts of private practices struggling to hire new graduates... hosting student placements is not only a fantastic professional challenge but it is also a great way to hire and we discuss why here... A discussion and further information based on this APA resource: https://australian.physio/student-placements-faqs Visit https://healthlinked.org/

Really enjoyed chatting with Tom who is a senior lecturer and OT at the University of Canberra. I found this talk of great reassurance - Tom is a unique lecturer in that he often posts graduate opportunities on facebook and is active on twitter with his discussions around his research on patient focused care (as opposed to service focused) and interdisciplinary learning and teaching... Tom has some great ideas regarding future changes to OT and Physio programmes on how they assess students and he has also sat on multiple hiring panels in the public health system and gives some great advice regarding interview preparation and common interview questions for public health jobs ... A great talk from a much admired educator at UC! Check out his twitter here ... https://twitter.com/TcBevitt

Have a go at preparing a 2-5 minute answer to the following interview questions commonly asked in grade 1 interviews....1) Tell me about your clinical experience in this area of adult communication disorders / or padiatric speech and language disorders. 2) Can you tell me about a time that you worked as a part of an effective team, what worked well and what didn’t? 3) Can you tell me about a time in particular that you managed conflict in a team? 4) How would you deal with differing perspectives towards a therapy plan. 5) Can you provide examples of when you were able to demonstrate your ability to be flexible with your schedule. 6) Can you tell me about a time you worked with someone from a culturally and linguistaclly diverse background? 7) Why do you want to work here? I jumped on the GYC podcast recently to talk about my experiences locuming and discuss why locums are a great idea for early career Physio, OT and SLP’s. A big thanks to Jack O’Brien for hosting a great podcast! Private practises wouldn’t necessarily be very keen on attracting locums but I think locums offer unique opportunities to get new people to a clinic in a way which is career building and is win/win for everyone involved… You can check out the GYC podcast here... https://www.clinicmastery.com/looking-into-the-benefits-of-locums-for-new-graduates-practitioners-and-as-a-recruitment-strategy/ Also join our FB group for early updates on the podcast, job skills, interdisciplinary learning and locum updates... https://www.facebook.com/groups/418684682080119/
A big thankyou to Olwen who is a QLD based Paediatric Speech Pathologist with 20 years clinical experience in the area of paediatric language and literacy acquisition. Olwen's clinical area of interest is in the executive function field, working with children with working memory deficits and complex behavioural issues. Thanks very much to Pearse for coming on the podcast and talking about some recent developments in this fascinating area of technology, where the technology is at right now and what is on the horizon for hand therapists in the next 3-5 years. Pearse discusses how this fast paced technology will not replace hand therapists, but will require some upskilling and training in the near future. 3D printing and computer assisted design for splinting has some unique capabilities for decreasing costs, improving outcome measures and improving patient outcomes in the private practise clinic, hospital outpatients department and in developing countries... Here I chat with Bec and Danni who trained in nursing and physiotherapy respectively and have since gone on to become GP's... Whilst at university we identified a need for interdisciplinary learning and built a student network across 3 different universities with students from 11 different health disciplines and held multidisciplinary learning workshops to network and improve our own MDT learning skills. Here we talk about how to do this for current health students and also talk about why it is easier to be a medical student than a physiotherapy student and the current challenges of being Dr's 3 years out... This episode is for any student or early career health professional who wants something unique to put on their CV, stand out during interview and get the job they want...
I've had some great questions on what a locum is and how to best go about organising one... So I thought I'd share my experiences and talk about the best way to go about it... Locums are a fantastic way to get paid to travel nationally and make an impact in a new community. When taking a locum you can often have your accommodation and travel costs covered as well as receive an above award rate... Work out a start date that works for you, get in touch and we will make it happen!
It has been a fantastic process getting the podcast up off the ground over the last 3 months and what better way to thank the wonderful guests for coming on the podcast by sharing some of their bungles and mistakes - all part of the fun!
