I used to think the answer to work-life balance was always “less work” — fewer hours, tighter boundaries, more space. But I recently noticed something uncomfortable: even with a schedule that looked balanced on paper, I was showing up at home more snippy and resentful than calm and present. In this episode, I'm talking about the version of imbalance nobody warns you about: when you've dialed work down so hard (usually out of burnout fear) that you start playing small, and it quietly leaks into your mood, your energy, and your relationships. If you've ever thought, “Why do I still feel off when I've done all the ‘right' things?” this one will land. Why “balance” can't be solved by a perfect schedule (even when the schedule looks ideal)How overcorrecting after burnout can lead to playing small — and feeling resentful anywayWhat to look for when you feel cranky/off at home (that actually starts in your work life)How to redefine balance as alignment with your values (not just fewer hours)A simple question to help you recalibrate without adding more time to your day To find out how I can help you improve your work-life balance, click here. Ever notice how you can see an easier way, yet still choose the hard way? In this episode, I'm digging into the uncomfortable question: what part of you doesn't want things to be easy? When it comes to work, motherhood, and productivity, why are subconsciously making it harder than it needs to be? I'm sharing five hidden patterns that keep high-achieving women (especially SLPs and private practice owners) stuck in hard mode. If you've been trying to solve a mindset problem with a new planner, a tighter system, or a 5 am wake-up call, this one is for you. You'll Learn: Why “hard” can feel like proof you're doing it right (and why that's a trap) The identity patterns that make "easy" feel unsafe or unfamiliarHow complexity can masquerade as control (and quietly drain your energy)The difference between sustainable success vs. survival modeA simple question to ask yourself when you're overcomplicating somethingRelated Episodes:Episode 73: Why You Don't Want Work-Life BalanceEpisode 97: This Is What They Didn't Teach Us About Being an SLP Episode 102: Your Job Is Not Your Identity (Even If You're Damn Good At It) Want Support? If you've ever taken a basic task and somehow turned it into a life-or-death project, this episode is for you. That “why is everything so intense?” feeling isn't proof you're responsible — it's usually a sign your default mode is hard. In today's episode, I'm naming what's actually driving that pattern and why it shows up so much for high-achieving SLPs, especially when you add ADHD to the mix. And I'm giving you one simple question to start loosening your grip today. In This Episode, You'll Learn: Why “hard” often feels like “better” (even when it's just burning you out) How over-preparing can be a sneaky attempt to avoid judgment or criticism How ADHD/EF challenges (novelty, complexity, rabbit holes, time blindness) fuel hard modeA grounding question to interrupt the spiral: “How would I do this if it had to be easy?” How this pattern impacts energy, relationships, and decision fatigue — and why it mattersWant support untangling this in real life? Stop believing everything you think -- it may be the single most useful skill you can learn. You have a voice in your head running commentary all day long, and it's shaping your experience of work-life balance more than you realize. If that inner monologue leans harsh, it's not just annoying…it's quietly directing how you feel, what you do, and who you are.In this episode, I'm talking about why your life doesn't change just because your situation does, and how to start changing it from the inside out. If you've ever hit a goal and still felt like a fraud (or you're exhausted from trying to push yourself just a little bit harder), this is for you.In This Episode, You'll Learn:Why thoughts aren't facts (even when they feel very convincing) How your beliefs filter what you notice and “prove” to you all day long Why goals don't automatically create confidence, ease, or self-trust A simple set of questions to challenge unhelpful thought loops How to build more believable thoughts using “ladder” steps and micro-evidence To find out how I can help you improve your work-life balance, click here. If you've ever been working and thought “I should be with my kids,” then been with your kids and thought “I should be working,” you're not alone. This episode came straight out of a coaching call with a private-practice SLP and homeschool mom who was living that exact tug-of-war at the pool on a workday—guilty the whole time. And here's the shift: this isn't really a time management problem. It's identity, self-worth, values, and the way your brain turns every choice into a loaded decision. What You'll LearnWhy “the perfect calendar” doesn't solve guilt if the mind drama is still running A reframe that helps work and motherhood stop feeling like competing priorities The sneaky belief underneath the guilt loop: loving work means loving your kids less A broader definition of self-care (including meaningful work, creativity, and purpose) Why flexibility can create decision fatigue—and how to make choices without spiraling Three questions to help you fully choose and stop reopening the debate every 15 minutesIf This ResonatesIf this hit home, I'd love to support you. Do you ever feel like every single task on your to-do list carries the emotional weight of a TED Talk, a board meeting, or a life-or-death emergency? Or when you technically have time to rest and your brain starts filling the space with more work, more pressure, more urgency? In this episode, I'm breaking down why so many high-achieving women—especially those of us with ADHD—fall into patterns of overworking, overthinking, and making everything feel incredibly high stakes. We're talking about the hidden payoffs behind perfectionism, the role identity plays in burnout, and why “working hard” can quietly become part of how we measure our worth. What You'll Learn3 hidden "payoffs" that keep high achievers stuck in overworking patternsWhy ADHD can intensify urgency, stress, perfectionism, and burnout cyclesCoaching questions that helped me start breaking this pattern in my own lifeHow to define “good enough” work without spiraling into guiltSimple guardrails that help prevent burnout before you hit the wallIf This Resonates:If you're exhausted from feeling like everything has to be done at maximum effort just to feel “safe” or successful, I can help. This is exactly the kind of work I do inside my 1:1 coaching...helping ambitious women build sustainable success without constantly operating in stress, urgency, and burnout mode.
In today's episode, we're talking about why “work-life balance” usually isn't just a scheduling problem. Your calendar might be chaos, but a lot of the stress comes from feeling pulled between versions of yourself that no longer fully fit.I use the transition into parenthood as an example, but this applies to any major life shift. When your roles and priorities shift, your identity has to shift too. And no planner in the world can fix the inner tug-of-war if you're still trying to live by old rules that don't match your current season.I walk you through a simple 3-step framework to help you rebuild a more grounded, values-based version of success without “shoulding” all over yourself in the process. Because the goal isn't becoming the old you again. The goal is building a life that actually works now.In This Episode, You'll Learn:Why feeling scattered doesn't automatically mean you're bad at time managementHow major life transitions can completely change your “identity hierarchy” (and why that's normal)The 3-step framework I use with clients:1️⃣ Name the old rules2️⃣ Re-evaluate your current values and needs3️⃣ Create identity anchorsWhy trying to “go back to who you used to be” usually keeps people stuckSmall transition rituals that help your brain shift roles more intentionallyHow to create more presence at work and at home without chasing perfect balanceKey Takeaways:You're probably not failing at balance. You're rebuilding identity.Systems help, but they can't solve an internal conflict about who you think you're supposed to be.Different seasons require different definitions of success. If you don't pause to reassess your values and needs, you'll keep measuring yourself against outdated expectations.Identity anchors are where this becomes real: tiny, repeatable actions that help your brain feel safer in the version of life you're building now.Resources Mentioned:Values + Needs Resource Want Help With This?If you're tired of feeling like you're constantly bouncing between work mode, mom mode, survival mode, and “I guess I'll answer emails at 9:47 PM” mode, this is exactly the kind of work I help clients with inside our coaching sessions. If you want support building systems, routines, and a weekly structure that actually supports both your caseload and your real life, book a consult here. You can't make more time, but you can stop spending it like it's unlimited. In this episode, I'm reframing work-life balance as a “time budget” problem (not a motivation problem), and sharing a simple way to audit where your time is actually going. You'll learn how to spot your biggest time/energy leaks and how to build basic weekly guardrails so your calendar supports your values instead of sabotaging them. If you're tired of living in “I'll feel better when I'm caught up” mode, this is your reset. What You'll Learn:✅ Why work-life balance isn't about trying harder, it's about having a plan for limited time & energy✅ How to do a simple time audit✅ 3 “time budget” buckets: non-negotiables, nice-to-haves, and leaks ✅ Common time leaks for SLPs (documentation perfectionism, context switching, email loops, people pleasing)✅ How to set 1–3 realistic “balance rules” that reduce decision fatigueKey Takeaways:
Do you have a million to-dos floating around in your brain and no idea which one to do first? Or maybe you've got a perfectly organized list and you still feel stuck because everything seems equally important and you can't choose where to start. Either way, this episode is for you.In this episode, I'm breaking down why prioritizing feels so hard (especially if you have ADHD) and sharing three less-conventional approaches to prioritizing your tasks without overcomplicating it or getting stuck in analysis paralysis. What You'll LearnWhy there is no “right” way to prioritize and how that belief might be keeping you stuckHow to match tasks to your executive functioning capacity (instead of forcing it)How to use your energy and natural rhythms to work with your brainWhy starting with the easiest task can actually be the most effective strategy (even if others say it's "wrong")A simple awareness → action → learning loop to help you figure out what actually works for youIf This Resonates…If you're tired of overthinking your to-do list, spinning your wheels, and still feeling behind, we can change that.Book a free consult and we'll look at what's actually going on with your time, your energy, and your brain -- and build a plan that works in real life (not just on paper).Resources & Links

Have you ever tried to plan your week and then watched it fall apart by Tuesday?I get it. When our schedules can change at a moment's notice (think: snow days, sick kids, cancellations...need I say more?) and your To Do List is a mile long, planning out your week can feel like a total waste of time. But in this episode, I'm walking you through why that exact thought is what's keeping you stuck and how to use your calendar in a way that actually works for your real life (not some ideal version of it). What You'll LearnWhy “my schedule always changes” is not a valid reason to avoid planning The biggest mindset shift that will completely change how you use your calendar Simple, practical calendar strategies (including a few Google Calendar hacks) How your calendar can create freedom and flexibility, not restriction and rigidity How your calendar can actually help you build self-trust and follow through on what you say you're going to do If This Resonates…If you're realizing you've been avoiding planning because it “never works anyway,” this is exactly the kind of thing I help my clients clean up.If this hit home, I'd love to help you create a schedule that actually supports your life not fights against it.Book a free consult and we'll map it out together. And if you want more conversations like this, come join us inside the Facebook group. More importantly, I'll show you how to get out of it so you can make decisions that actually align with you. What You'll LearnWhy trying to figure out what other people think is a losing game (and always will be)Subtle ways this habit keeps you stuck, second-guessing, and out of alignmentA powerful mindset shift that instantly takes your energy backUse comparison productively instead of spiraling into “compare and despair”How to start making decisions based on your values, not someone else's lensIf This Resonates:If you're tired of overthinking every decision and feeling stuck in your own head, I'd love to help you work through this.

Have you ever sat down to work and somehow ended the day wondering what you actually got done?Feeling like you were busy all day, but you didn't make progress on anything that actually matters? If you feel like you're constantly playing catch-up, there's a good chance you're stuck in what I call reactive mode.In this episode, I'm breaking down exactly what that means, why it's happening (especially if you have ADHD), and the simple framework I used to coach myself out of it.This Episode Is For You :You feel busy all day but still behindYou're constantly asking, “what should I do next?”You struggle with planning your week (and sticking to it)You find yourself “productively procrastinating”You want structure, but not something rigid or overwhelmingWhat You'll LearnThe difference between reactive vs proactive planning (and why your current approach isn't working)The subtle signs you're stuck in reactive mode (even if you think you're being productive)My simple 4-step framework to get out of overwhelm and back into controlWhy micro-actions are the key to actually following through (not burning out)The step most people skip and how it's secretly keeping you stuckIf This Resonates…If this episode hit a little too close to home, you're not alone, and you don't have to keep spinning in this cycle. This is exactly the work I do with my clients: helping you move from reactive, overwhelmed, and scattered to clear, intentional, and in control of your time.
If you're an SLP who constantly feels like the day ends before the work does, you're not imagining it.Between therapy sessions, evaluations, documentation, meetings, emails, and unexpected schedule changes, it can feel like you're always one step behind. But what if the problem isn't just time management? In this episode, I break down three hidden reasons many speech-language pathologists feel like there's never enough time and why working harder doesn't solve the problem. Here's What You'll Learn:Why the thought “I don't have time” can keep you stuck in reactive modeHow mental load makes your day feel more overwhelming than it actually isWhy systems reduce cognitive load for busy cliniciansHow constant role-switching affects productivityI also share a quick coaching story that perfectly illustrates how a five-minute decision can create hours of extra work later. This episode will help you start identifying whether what you're experiencing is actually a time problem or something else entirely. If you're an SLP who feels like you're constantly juggling too much, you're not alone—and there are ways to make your workload feel more manageable. How many times have you said today:“I have to finish this eval.”“I should answer this email.”“I have to stay late.”That one tiny phrase might be the reason you're exhausted. In this episode, I'm breaking down the thought error that drives burnout for high-achieving SLPs and giving you a simple 60-second tool to interrupt it.In This Episode, You'll Learn:Why burnout isn't just about workloadThe sneaky “I Have To” loopWhy more information doesn't equal more confidenceHow to feel in control (even if your schedule doesn't change!)If you're ready to stop shoulding on yourself and build sustainable work-life balance:
Speech pathology services have recently been included in Medicare rebates for young people with under 25s with stuttering, speech sound disorders, or cleft lip or palate now being eligible for rebates for assessment and treatment. You're working. You're trying. You're checking things off. And yet you still feel behind. If that sounds familiar, this episode is going to explain why.I'm sharing a concept I use all the time with my coaching clients called intentional constraint, and how learning to limit your time, energy, and effort on purpose can completely shift your work-life balance (without working more). What You'll LearnWhy your brain treats almost everything like it's equally important and how that's quietly keeping you overwhelmedHow ADHD patterns like hyperfocus and time blindness make you over-invest in the wrong tasksThe exact questions to ask before starting a task so you stop over-performing on low-impact workSimple mindset shifts you can use in the moment to aim for done instead of perfectHow to budget your time and energy intentionally instead of spending it by defaultIf This Resonates:If you're exhausted from doing “all the things” and still feeling behind...If you're tired of overworking just to keep your head above water...If you suspect ADHD might be playing a role in how you manage your time...I'd love to help you build structure that actually works for your brain.
You know that color-coded spreadsheet you created? The planner you swore was the one? The system that was going to finally fix everything?...and now it's collecting dust.If you've ever stopped using a system and made that mean something about your discipline, your consistency, or your competence, this episode will shift something.Because what if the system isn't the problem? What You'll LearnWhy your abandoned planner or spreadsheet is not proof that you're lazy or inconsistentThe real reason you create systems in the first place (hint: it's not about organization)The mindset shift that turns a 60-minute “get back on track” project into a 2-minute check-inHow systems can quietly become performative and actually keep you stuckThe simple question to ask when you feel like you've “fallen off the wagon”If This Resonates…If you're tired of shoulding on yourself about not sticking to the plan...If you're the competent one everyone relies on, but secretly you feel behind…If you want systems that actually support your ADHD brain instead of shaming it…I'd love to help.
We've been sold a version of "work-life balance" that sounds great on paper, but terrible in real life. If you've ever changed jobs, started a private practice, or rearranged your schedule hoping this would finally make things feel calm--only to find yourself just as stressed as before--this episode is for you. I went live in the Work-Life Balance for Speech Pathologists Facebook group and shared three big lies we've been told about balance and why they quietly keep high-achieving SLPs stuck, overwhelmed, and exhausted. What You'll LearnWhy balance is not universal and why trying to copy someone else's version will always backfireWhy balance doesn't come from your schedule or circumstances, even when everything “looks good” on paperWhy balance isn't a destination, but a skill you build (and rebuild) in different seasonsWhy private practice flexibility alone doesn't prevent burnoutHow reclaiming balance starts internally, not with another schedule tweak To find out how I can help you improve your work-life balance, click here. I'm sharing a very real, very recent behind-the-scenes look at how “time freedom” can quietly turn into overwhelm and what to do when you realize your days aren't working the way you thought they would. This one is honest, a little uncomfortable, and incredibly common, especially for ADHD brains. What You'll LearnThe hidden cost of time freedom no one talks about until you're already living itWhy wide-open schedules often lead to paralysis, reactivity, and decision fatigueHow this showed up for me while running my coaching business from homeWhy ADHD + lack of structure can create chaos instead of balanceI'll help you reframe structure as the thing that actually creates freedom, not the enemy of itIf This Resonates…If you found yourself nodding along, you're definitely not alone. This is exactly why I'm hosting a free workshop on how to run your professional life without burning out. I'm sharing three things my coaching clients do differently that create real work-life balance, without more systems or pressure. These aren't magic fixes, but they do change how you show up at work and at home. What You'll Learn:Why pushing through your thoughts and feelings is actually slowing you down and how learning to process them creates relief instead of more overwhelmHow my clients learn to work with their brain (especially ADHD and neurodivergent brains) instead of forcing strategies that were never designed for themHow to spend your time intentionally -- even when time feels scarce -- so it supports your life instead of draining itHow these shifts create more clarity, energy, and control without requiring you to do moreIf This Resonates…If you're nodding along thinking, “Yep… this is me,” I'd love to support you. Their first book, *Hope the Butterfly Wants to Go*, focuses on core vocabulary, while their upcoming release, *Hank the Slug Wants to Eat* (out July 14), introduces adjectives and encourages picky eaters. The books include interactive elements to engage young readers. Inspired by their clinical work, the authors aim to empower children with language skills, emphasizing the transformative power of words. STORY 2: PSC approves Georgia Power rate freeze Georgia Power will freeze customer rates for three years under a plan approved by state regulators, delaying base rate increases until 2028. However, the utility can recover storm damage costs, sparking criticism from environmental groups who argue it shifts financial burdens to customers. The plan sets a maximum Return on Equity at 11.9%, despite calls to lower it. Critics also objected to the lack of public hearings, citing transparency concerns. Georgia Power plans to meet growing energy demands, including for data centers, by continuing fossil fuel reliance, with a related vote on generating capacity set for July 15. STORY 3: How to be safe in the water this summer As summer heats up, officials urge water safety, emphasizing life jackets as essential. Chris Purvis of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers highlights that 89% of over 4,000 drowning fatalities since 1998 involved individuals not wearing life jackets, with men aged 18-54 most at risk. The Corps’ “Life Jackets Worn…Nobody Mourns” program targets this demographic. Purvis warns drowning is often silent and quick, debunking movie myths of splashing. Parents are advised against using non-Coast Guard-approved floaties for kids, recommending safer alternatives like Puddle Jumpers. Life jacket loaner stations are available at key Cherokee County locations to promote safety. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Open to men 49+ and women 40+, the league features over 450 players across nine skill-based leagues. New player evaluations will be held July 15, 19, 22, and 26 at Skip Wells and Hobgood Parks. Arrive 30 minutes early for pre-registration or register online at cssasoftball.us. For details, email cssasoftball1995@gmail.com or call 470-795-6944. STORY 5: Woodstock's paid parking program starts July 7. What we know Woodstock’s new paid parking program begins July 7, affecting select downtown street spaces and the Mill Street lot, while 80% of public parking, including the City Center East Deck, remains free. Paid parking runs daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the first hour free and $2 per hour for the next two hours. The program aims to improve parking turnover and availability, with enforcement using license plate recognition. ADA spaces remain free with a three-hour limit, and 15-minute short-term spaces are being added. Revenue will fund parking maintenance and downtown enhancements. Hey Friends~ Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a communication disorder that interferes with learning, understanding, and using language. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the USA says DLD “is one of the most common developmental disorders, affecting approximately 1 in 14 children in kindergarten.” To add to the confusion, over the years, “DLD has also been called specific language impairment, language delay, or developmental dysphasia.” Source: https://www.nidcd.nih.gov/sites/default/files/Documents/health/voice/developmental-language-disorder.pdf Is your child struggling in school? Not listening well? & Unable to communicate what they mean? Today's guest, Lois Letchford, shares her story that led to connecting the dots for her son's understanding and learning in the presence of Dyslexia, Developmental Learning Delay, and other developmental struggles. She put away what was not working and used what her son was interested in. She says, “Curiosity propagates in the brain in untold ways.” She gives practical descriptions that you can use, whether you are a teacher or a parent, to help your children better. So you have a patient with dysphagia…what do you immediately start considering? Diagnosis…comorbidities…past medical history…past surgical history…current diet recs… ☝️Those are the typical go-to “textbook” checklist items, but there are other incredibly important considerations that will affect how you evaluate and treat your patient. These considerations impact your clinical recommendations and what matters most to your patients - and they deserve to be honored. I'm talking about cultural and religious considerations in dysphagia - which is exactly what Michelle Weber Dehgan MA, CCC-SLP, BCS-S & Kiana Gardner MA, CCC-SLP dive into this on this week's episode of the Swallow Your Pride Podcast! Together, we discuss the importance of cultural sensitivity in managing dysphagia. Michelle and Kiana highlight the significance of considering patients' cultural preferences, dietary restrictions, and access to food during evaluations and treatment recommendations. They share the results of a survey conducted among SLPs that highlight the challenges in accommodating nutritional preferences and religious and cultural beliefs. As SLPs, we work with a diverse range of children, including those who have experienced trauma. Child sexual abuse is a particularly devastating form of trauma that affects children across all racial and ethnic backgrounds. However, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) children are disproportionately affected by child sexual assault and are less likely to receive the support they need. In this episode, I review a case study of a speech-language pathologists who fulfills her ethical responsibility in a sexual assault case as it effects the child's speech and language development. Listen in! Sexual Assault Disclaimer: If you or someone you know has been affected by sexual assault, know that you are not alone. There are resources and support available to you. The National Sexual Assault Hotline is available 24/7 and can provide confidential support and information. The number is 1-800-656-HOPE (4673). Additionally, local resources such as counseling services, victim advocacy centers, and healthcare providers can also provide support. We encourage you to seek help and support if you need it.
