Delighted to welcome Judy and Nikos to this, episode 23 of The Living Process. Our guests are well known for their achievement of editing Senses of Focusing Volume 1 and 2, two fantastic resources featuring new writing and diverse perspectives on Focusing and FOT. In this episode, we discuss critiques of focusing, what is coming next for them both, and positive developments they would like to see happen in therapy generally and in the Focusing world. In our 3-way conversation, we touch on the way that other approaches like the person-centered approach, Internal Family Systems, or Emotion Focus Therapy might incorporate focusing as a technique without fully integrating the fundamental importance of the experiential response, felt sensing, and carrying forward. We touched on different words and understandings for theories of the body, for eg the Ancient Greek terms like 'pathos' and the difference it offers if we allow ancient philosophy to be experienced freshly. We raised questions regarding what we can do to be better understood by other traditions and to translate some of our discoveries so that therapists from other orientations can think further with them. How do we in FOT deal with abrupt or cathartic changes? How do we engage with theories? How can we build bridges with other therapeutic communities and philosophies? What is our view of the person? Is there a spiritual context for our understanding of human being? Can we stay open to other ways of thinking so that they stay open to us? What is the future of FOT and therapy? How to keep developing FOT ourselves after the work of Gendlin… In response to this Judy and Nikos are planning a series of seminars or a symposium to welcome critical thinking and deeper exploration of Focusing, FOT and our relationship to other ways of understanding. Nikolaos Kypriotakis has studied Physics and has been trained in Person-Centred & Focusing-Oriented Psychotherapy, Person-Centred Supervision and Children Focusing. He works as an FOT therapist and Focusing Trainer for the Hellenic Focusing Center and he is a Certifying Coordinator with The International Focusing Institute, New York. Together with Judy Moore he edited the collective work Senses of Focusing, Vol. I & II and has translated into Greek the book Focusing by Eugene T. Gendlin. He was the editor-in-chief of the magazine Εποχή-Epoché (Phenomenological Psychotherapies), for the issues n.1 to n.16. Judy Moore was originally trained in the classical Person-Centred Approach on the first PCA professional training in the UK. She taught on the postgraduate Diploma in Person-Centred Counselling at the University of East Anglia (UEA) throughout the 1990s before, thanks to the work of her colleague, Campbell Purton, finally discovering the extent of Gendlin's contribution to the development of Client-Centred/ Person-Centred Therapy. As Director of the Centre for Counselling Studies at UEA she worked with Campbell to develop Focusing and FOT training at UEA in the early 2000s. UEA also hosted several conferences, including colloquiums on Gendlin's philosophy. Judy is a Certifying Coordinator of The International Focusing Institute, working in private practice and as a freelance trainer and consultant. In 2021 she co-edited (with Nikolaos Kypriotakis) the two volumes of Senses of Focusing. https://sensesoffocusing.weebly.com Focusing book in Greek translation: https://bit.ly/3Y9BtwM #bodytherapy #focusing #gendlin #experientialpractice #somaticexperience #psychotherapy #counseling #psychology #personalgrowth #rodgers

The Children's Act 2014 and SEND Code of Practice (2015) placed great emphasis on the use of person-centred approaches. The concept was embraced but without necessarily being fully explored and accurately interpreted. There is a level of confusion in some schools and settings about how to effectively implement person-centred practices without fully understanding the underlying principles. For SENCOs in particular, these approaches have often become overly bureaucratised. In this week's episode, Angela Scott joins Dale to discuss ‘Person-Centred Approaches: clarity or confusion?'. Angela explores person-centred approaches covering: Concept confusion between pupil voice, pupil participation, pupil engagement and person-centred approaches. Unpicking each to ensure effective use of all. The history and key principles of person-centred approaches. What person-centred approaches can mean for children and young people with SEND and for their families and teachers. Person-centred approaches and potential links to current thinking about metacognition and self-regulation Supporting person-centred approaches through pedagogy and practical tools. Listen to gain a stronger understanding of person-centred approaches to drive positive outcomes for pupils with SEND.   About Angela Scott Angela Scott is the Regional Lead for SEND for the Eastern Partnership UK (SEND) and is programme lead for the National Award for SEN Coordination, Advanced SENCO and SENCOs as Leaders Awards. SAGE Palliative Medicine & Chronic Care

This episode features Hannah Scott, (King's College London, Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing Midwifery and Palliative Care, Cicely Saunders Institute, London, UK)   What is already known about the topic? Person-centred outcome measures have been shown to improve the quality of care and patient outcomes in adult palliative care when successfully implemented into routine care. Several factors influence implementation in adult services, but they have not been identified in care for children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions. The views of stakeholders are key to successful development, implementation and use of outcome measures in practice.   What this paper adds? Perceived benefits of using person-centred outcome measures include enhanced understanding of what matters to patients and families, improved communication and collaborative working and standardised data collection and reporting; perceived risks include negative impacts on care and measures not being used as intended. Potential barriers to implementation include acceptability and usability of the measure for children, burden and capacity of patients and families to complete the measure, privacy concerns, protecting family members and language barriers; potential facilitators include explaining the benefits of person-centred outcome measures and securing ‘buy-in', measures being implemented by known and trusted health and social care staff and the language in the measure being meaningful to children and families. Eight recommendations are presented to minimise risks and support successful implementation of child and family-centred outcome measures for children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions.   Implications for practice, theory, or policy The benefits of person-centred outcome measures for care should be explained to children, families and professionals to facilitate buy in and successful implementation. Implementation strategies should be designed collaboratively with professionals to ensure implementation of person-centred outcome measures is feasible within current practice and does not impact negatively on care. Professionals introducing and administering the measure should be known and trusted by the child and family, and should discuss usage preference and information sharing to address any privacy concerns.     Full paper available from:     https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/02692163241234797   If you would like to record a podcast about your published (or accepted) Palliative Medicine paper, please contact Dr Amara Nwosu:  a.nwosu@lancaster.ac.uk

On this episode I sat down with Cameron Faller, physical therapist and educator to discuss some of the shortcomings of the current approach to evidence-based practice and how a move to process based therapy may be the answer.  We went through the following topics: Q 1: To begin with, do you mind if we dive into some of the issues or shortcomings of evidence based practice as we know it? Shortcomings of the current approach to therapy (biomedical model) Focussed on biology  Has saved lives  Struggles to capture the interplay between biological, social and psychological  Reductionist problem solving    Mechanistic world view  View body like a machine  The focus is on fixing isolated parts    The idea that we can understand individual trajectories by understanding normal and the  deviation from normal. They thought that between subject variability was a good estimate of within subject variability.    Falsely homogenized group and situationally decontextualised individual units  The Bell Curve of the collective only to decontextualized individuals (which is no one)  Normative concepts may not be applicable to specific individuals (as they are non-ergodic)  It's a kind of individualism but not related to a real individual    Question 2: Issues with the application of the biopsychosocial approach to clinical practice   Question 3: What is process-based therapy?   What core biopsychosocial processes should be targeted with this client given this goal in this situation, and how can they most efficiently and effectively be changed?  Process based therapy approach:  What creates the problem for the individual  What historical factors may have contributed  What are the factors that maintain the problem  Create a network of nodes of possible factors [network functional analysis]  What strategies can we use to perturbate this complex system? How can we introduce healthy variation or retention?” What treatment kernels do we have available to us to do this in the particular context? We are aiming to perturbate the system to turn it from maladatpive to adaptive. This has to be done in the right context.  What is the network in the process that you are targeting? Use data to track progress and to test hypotheses.  Adjust as needed. ACT - incorporates functional contextualism - what works (functions) in a given situation or context.  Unique to the individual  Does this work in this moment? Is this moving us towards the type of life we want to have? To reduce suffering and engage in our values Q: How does it address some of the issues with the current approach to therapy?    Q: Does a systems based approach bastardize Evidence-Based Practice? Does it come down more to clinicians appreciating the evidence then being able to skillfully apply it to the person in front of them and their individual context?    Q: To help me and any of the listeners understand how it is actually applied, do you have any examples we could run through?    Q: Example of a network analysis? Eg thought of keeping back in neutral when bending.    Q: What can we do with this information from a network analysis to create positive change of an individual ?    Q: For listeners who want to learn more about process based therapy - what can they do / where can they go to learn more? According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the DSM-V–also known as the psychiatrist's bible–there are only four official diagnoses for eating disorders. Though experts expect that number to double in the next edition, the reasons someone might develop or maintain an eating disorder are as variable as the number of people affected.    This is because eating disorders are not just a set of behaviours. They are a way of coping with difficult things.   Psychologist and former Butterfly Helpline Manager, Juliette Thomson, specialises in a person-centred, holistic approach to recovery. “An eating disorder is often the tip of an iceberg,” she says, “Underneath, there is likely a lot more going on for a person about themselves in their lives.”   To help someone struggling with an eating disorder, a therapist will seek to understand their psychological and social reality. That's why there shouldn't be a one-size-fits-all approach; people need treatment plans tailored to their own situation. In addition, insists Juliette, you don't need to be certain that you even want to recover, as a good therapist should support you wherever you're at.   Listen to Juliette explain why she tells clients that recovery may be the hardest thing they'll ever do in their life, and why it will also be the most rewarding.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We piloted/evaluated a coding framework that has simplified the coding process and enabled streamlined reporting of PREMs findings to consumers and staff (including an ability to compare trends over time). This framework has been implemented across four RBWH clinical service lines and has enabled a more structured and efficient solution to analysing qualitative PREMs data. Most importantly, it has created a solution to embed a person-centred lens in how health services interpret and analyse patient-reported feedback. It has enabled service lines to prioritise improvement projects in direct response to patient feedback not otherwise available through quantitative dashboards.

On today's podcast I am excited to be speaking with Amelia White. In this episode she talks about co-educational boarding schools and the impact they have on girls and boys. How does it differ from single sex boarding schools? Amelia is a specialist in this area and has trained with Nick Duffell. Why this podcast will be probably the most fascinating so far is that not only did Amelia go to the same boarding school as me, but we were on the same year! We reconnected last year when we realised that we are doing the same work with ex-boarders... Today we share our experiences at this coed boarding school. She shares some of the classic symptoms she sees in single sex and coeducational boarding schools. How are they different? How are they the same? Have they changed since our day?---Amelia White is a Humanistic Counsellor who works in private practice in Hove and online. She tutors on the Person Centred foundation degree course at East Sussex College. She has a specialism in working with those struggling as a result of their Boarding School experience and offers individual and couple therapy to those affected by their own or partners' schooling. She facilitates groups, run workshops, and courses. Some of the questions that Amelia answers:1. I would love for you to share some of your journey into doing the work that you now do.2. What was the experience for you as a girl at a coeducational boarding school? (Piers could add his experience as a boy in the school and regarding the girls).3. In your work with ex boarders how does the experience of coeducational boarding schools differ from single sex boarding schools? 4. In some circles, it is said that coeducational boarding is less traumatic than single sex boarding. Have you found this to be the case and if so why do you think this is?5. In your work have you found that there are common ways that both single sex and coeducational boarding schools affect people? If so what might they be?6. Nowadays a lot of boarding schools are becoming coeducational. Have they changed since our day. If so in what way? And how are they the same?7. Healing boarding school syndrome. In your work have you found that you have to approach coeducational ex-boarders differently from others or the same? What have you found has worked the best?8. What is the effect on girls of growing up in a co-ed school focused on patriarchal values?9. The lack of safeguarding with regards sexual relationships developing at such young ages without an parents present.10. Welcome to another episode of The Words Matter Podcast. In this episode of the CauseHealth Series I'm speaking with Dr Brian Broom about his Chapter 14 that he wrote for the CauseHealth Book titled “The Practice of Whole Person-Centred Healthcare” (read chapter here).Until early 2019 Brian was a Clinical Immunologist at Auckland City Hospital and is Adjunct Professor in Psychotherapy at Auckland University of Technology. He is trained in internal medicine and psychotherapy and now works to train clinicians to practice whole person-medicine and healthcare (see here).Brian has written three books addressing this issue: Somatic Illness and the Patient's Other Story, Meaning-Full Disease: How Personal Experience and Meanings Cause and Maintain Physical Illness and Transforming Clinical Practice Using a MindBody Approach: A Radical Integration. In this episode we talk about: His interesting professional journey from immunology, psychiatry and to psychotherapy. How immunology and psychotherapy seem to be rooted in different paradigms- and how he has managed to bridge the two and addressed any tensions and challenges. The role and value of the story in his whole-person perspective. Relationship-based care; which resonates with my conversation with Dr Maxi Miciak in episode 9, and it will be worth re-visiting that podcast off the back of this one (listen here). What he calls ‘Hearing stories' and making diagnoses and how these two pursuits relate. Medicine as body only practice and traditional psychotherapy as mind/story only practices and how his whole-person approach avoids this dualism. This was an absolutely captivating conversation with Brian. The sincerity and compassion in the way in which he tells his own story of his whole person-centred approach really illustrates the way that practice needs to change to be truly person-centred.If you liked the podcast, you'll love The Words Matter online course and mentoring to develop your clinical expertise  - ideal for all MSK therapists.Follow Words Matter on:Instagram @Wordsmatter_education @TheWordsMatterPodcastTwitter @WordsClinicalFacebook Words Matter - Improving Clinical Communication★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
