Hi Friends!Today we are kicking off a new series here at This ORGANIZED Life, called Organizing Room by Room. With January leading the charge for decluttering and getting organized, we thought it would be helpful to bring on a bunch of experts who specialize in certain spaces to talk about some of the struggles they see people facing, and share some solutions to help you in your organizing/decluttering journey. To start us off, I invited one of my friends, and one of your favorites, Organizational Designer Lisa Eckerle, to join me in talking about one of my favorite rooms in the house-The Kitchen. You might remember Lisa from Episode 268, where she shared her story of starting her Professional Organizing business on the weekends while working a full-time job and mothering 2 littles. Once folks got wind of her incredible eye for design and her on-point organizing skills, her business took off and she was able to leave her full time job and run Sort Support, full time. She specializes in ORGANIZATIONAL DESIGN, and is currently one of the leading experts in the Indianapolis area. -So for all my Indy listeners-make sure to check her out!As the epicenter of our homes, kitchens do a lot of heavy lifting. From cooking and food storage, to conversation areas, command centers, or a homework hub-a good organization plan is critical for reducing anxiety and feeling in control of your space.Although you don't have to start in this room, for many it's their biggest pain point. If your kitchen is organized (or disorganized), it sets the tone for the rest of the house. During our conversation we talked about: Common pitfalls she sees and hears from her clients who struggle to keep their kitchens organized.Strategies to help make your kitchen more functional and less stressful. Why ditching (infrequently used) single use gadgets is a simple way to free up space. Lisa's signature “C.R.A.P “Method is great for this! Cheap, Repetitive, Aggravating, Past its prime.Breaking your kitchen into “zones” by categories to make finding things easier for the whole family. Some examples include Cutting Drawer, Baking Station, Prep Area, Cook CabinetKitchens are one area in the home where the right products can make a huge difference-(*disclaimer we don't want you buying the wrong products for your space or lifestyle). Lisa shares some of her “go-to” products when it comes to Kitchen organization, including turntables, drawer dividers and using a lid holder to store lids upright (one of my personal faves too!)Make sure to check out the links below to connect with Lisa or to find anything we talked about in this episode.Make sure to tune in next week as we continue our Room by Room Organizing Series with Closets! Hi Friends,Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa it's crunch time! With only days to go for each of these major holidays, navigating clutter pitfalls is no easy task. The physical clutter of presents and wrapping supplies that are overtaking your closet, Christmas cookies and assorted treats that are covering your counters…To the calendar clutter of finding time to shop, wrap, bake, and attend holiday parties in addition to your “normal” schedule…Let's not forget the emotional clutter of trying to keep everyone's gift count “balanced”, and trying to create the “perfect” holiday for your family…It's no wonder that we stress eat, get rundown, and dream of spending countless uninterrupted hours of laying on the couch binge watching Dead To Me.So as someone guilty of all of the above, I'm taking a page out of my personal playbook to share how I keep it all together during the most stressful time of the year. From Holiday Gift Trackers, to enlisting elves to help with some of the simpler, yet time consuming tasks like stuffing envelopes, I've found that the key to not losing it on everyone comes down to 3 things: PlanningCommunicationGratitudeFor all my fly-by-the-seat-of my pants listeners, this is where you roll your eyes.Hear me when I say, I have tried it your way, and it didn't work.I've shoved unopened packages in random places only to discover them in February, or realize that one kid has 2 things while the other has 12.I've boycotted decorating the house until Team Palau pitched in to help. There were seasons when I've been resentful, tired, and overwhelmed, especially when my kids were small, that I was left doing all the heavy lifting alone.I want you to know that you are not alone. The holiday season is wonderful and stressful. It's a both/and. Life is too short to not focus on what you can do, rather than what you can't. We all have a limit-whether it's a limit for our finances, time, space or emotional capacity. If you're not sure where to start, let me help. Hit the PAUSE button, take a walk and listen to this episode. Next, map out a game plan of what needs to get done over the next week, and what can wait. Hi Friends,Joining me today is Amber Brandt. Amber is passionate about helping clients and families create spaces that not only reflect their values, but help them live smarter, cozier, and more intentional lives. She believes authenticity, connection, and true hospitality can change the world. Can I get an Amen! When we apply values-based thinking to our homes, it has the power to change everything -- how we decorate, what we buy, what we say yes/no to, and how we connect with others. As we are currently in the midst of the holiday season, our homes often become one big drop-spot. Between shopping, entertaining, and endless to-do lists, it's understandable why it looks as though the eye of a tornado just ran through our living room. When we finally do come up for air, we're often left feeling overwhelmed and depleted, rather than peaceful and rested. For many folks, the feeling of “house shame” isn't limited to the holidays, but this time of year it's often magnified when family and friends are likely to gather together.During our conversation we talked about the common roadblocks she sees from her clients: obligation, guilt, perfectionism, shame and the inability to make a decision–which are similar to our 5 clutter pitfalls. https://simplyborganized.com/2017/01/12/episode-003-identifying-the-5-clutter-pitfalls/We talked about how physical, emotional and calendar clutter each play a role in creating a cozy home, and Amber shares some simple tips to help you create the home you want. Something as simple as lighting a candle or wrapping yourself in a fuzzy blanket can help you find calm and peace amidst the chaos. What steps can you take today to make your home feel more cozy? My IRL community has been impacted by the loss of several kids to various types of cancers-and having a front row seat to how it impacts a family alters the way in which you see the world. At the time of this recording, The St. Baldrick's Foundation has donated over 465 million dollars to pediatric cancer research, making them the leading non-profit organization dedicated to pediatric cancer research. They are “the behind the scenes” heroes responsible for funding grants to researchers in institutions including St. Jude's, Dana Farber, and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (to name a few).I invited Tim on the show to share his personal story of growing up on a farm in Ireland, the oldest of 6 kids, coming to the US with $200 in his pocket, and building a life here (the true American Dream).During our conversation, Tim shares: The origin story of St. Baldrick's, and how a brainstorm with some buddies over a couple of beers changed his lifeHow St. Baldrick's got its name (spoiler alert: it's not a real saint!)Stories about how kids and adults of all ages have been impacted by the work they do.In a season where many of us are stressed and overwhelmed, this episode focuses on hitting pause on your to-do list and pressing play on how small gestures can make a difference in someone's life. After listening to this episode, my hope is that you feel inspired to share it with your friends, show gratitude for the people in your life who matter, and continue using your superpowers to make the world a better place.I am grateful for all of you.XOXO-LaurieP.S. Now more than ever we are here to help you in your decluttering journey! Now for today's episode, I know that the time between Halloween and New Years can be stressful and overwhelming. Those 60 days seem to happen overnight, leaving you feeling like there is never enough time to get it all done. Today we are talking about all of it: The feeling of drinking from firehose Increased mental load Maxed out Budgets The rise in Calendar Clutter on top of Physical Clutter   Forget about your regular list of TO-DO items, and heaven forbid you throw a birthday in the mix to add to your already overflowing plate. (thanks Josh for being born on Dec 17th!) All of this can easily lead to a spectrum of emotions, spanning from snippiness to a complete mental shut down. So today we are here to give you some actionable steps, spread some grace, and share some words of encouragement during this time. I will walk you through exactly what I do on a daily basis to help prioritize the important from the urgent. By getting in the practice of doing this everyday, you will begin to: Make decisions based on intention rather than by default. Recognize that some tasks take longer than expected while others can be completed quickly. Set realistic expectations on what you can and cannot accomplish in a day Learn the natural rhythms of your personal peak productivity time and when you need to recharge Learn to say “no,” or “not now” based on the facts rather than feelings   I have been Time Blocking for years and last year I started my Top 3 List which has been a game changer. It forces me to prioritize what I need to do versus what I want to do. As you embark on this fun, yet stressful time of year, I hope you can take a moment to exhale and enjoy the ride. Show yourself grace, give yourself permission to pause, and recognize that Superwoman is a fictional character. You've got this, and I am here to help you every step of the way. Hi Friends! We're back today with another Partner Spotlight Episode! We started this series back in January, and I hope you're loving it as much as I am. Each month I sit down with a different professional organizer to get a “behind the scenes” look at their lives. From growing up, to learning about what they did prior to starting their professional organizing journey, we're giving you a glimpse into their worlds and learning a few organizing tips along the way! Joining me today is Kristy Potgieter, founder of KLP Organizing. Kristy has been part of our SBO partner program for over 2 years and one of my favorite people! About a year ago, during one of our mentor calls, Kristy came to me with an idea she had for developing an online tool to help streamline and simplify the design & layout process for spaces like pantries, drawers, and cabinets. I thought it was an incredible idea, and something that could be a huge time saver for both homeowners & professional organizers. So Kristy, along with her husband, Riian, did what most of us only talk about doing…saw a gap in the marketplace and created a solution. I asked Kristy to come on the show today, to talk about her new business baby, Sortifi, the only design tool specifically for professional organizers which officially launched last month. During our conversation we talk about: Kristy's life prior to becoming a professional organizer What it's like starting a business with your husband How being an Enneagram 1 (the perfectionist) can be both a blessing and a challenge in the world of organizing and entrepreneurship. The goal of Sortifi, including who it's for, and how it works  She is offering an exclusive promo for our listeners. Hi Friends, Today we're talking all about how to keep your business finances organized. Joining me today is Melissa Leon, founder of Two Sense Consulting where she helps sma ll business owners make sense of how they are using their time and spending money.  Melissa also hosts the Efficiency B podcast, and on the personal side of things, she lives in Phoenix, AZ with her husband and 3 small kiddos. Keeping your finances organized is an important part of living an organized life. We've done episodes talking about your personal finances (check out my episode with Rachel Cruze), but this is the first time we are d oing an episode geared for the small business owner. As an entrepreneur, I know first hand all of the hats needed to run a successful business. Finances can be both intimidating and overwhelming (not to mention boring) for many of us. As someone who works with a lot of entrepreneurs, mompreneurs, and folks with a side-hustle, I was surprised to learn how many business owners aren't looking at their P & L (profit and loss statement).  Some are ashamed to admit that their financial organization strategy is limited to how much money is currently in their bank account. If that is you, not to worry! We are not here to shame anyone. This episode is here to help give you some simple strategies to help get your business finances under control and organized. From understanding the difference between cash flow vs profit Gross income to Cost of Goods To how often you should be looking at your financials   We can't all be experts in everything, so surrounding yourself with the right people who can guide you in the areas where you are unsure is a critical piece to living an organized life. Hi Friends, Today we are talking about Decluttering and Divorce.  This is a topic that I've wanted to address for some time, and I have the perfect guests for y'all!  T.H Irwin & Jessica Klingbaum are best friends, podcasters and founders of the exExperts, a free online community for women going through divorce. We kick off the show by having them each share their personal experiences. What I found so interesting is how they lived very different lives, with parallel stories. Although both TH and Jessica navigated their divorces separately, together they found comfort in helping each other along the way. Out of their personal stories and professional experiences, The ExExperts was created. Their website is the go-to resource on everything you need to know about divorce–from parenting, to finance, you can find support where you need it. What I love most is their no-nonsense, honest approach to walking alongside their community because they have “been there, done that.” As someone who has never been through a divorce, I was curious to know how each one approached the decluttering process which can be overwhelming in itself, let alone separating households. During our conversation I asked them questions like: Was there more or less emotional clutter when you were separating your homes? What were the items that were easy to part with? What items did you choose to hold onto from your married life? How did you navigate the back and forth logistics of clothing, activities, and homework? I feel like we only scratched the surface, I could have spoken with them for hours!  If you'd like us to continue the conversation make sure to leave us a comment or tag us on social media!
