In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss the findings of a Gallup poll which revealed that Americans' confidence in clergy today has declined to an all-time low of 32%. Translation? Less than a third of all Americans consider clergy to be trustworthy. Ouch. The big question that follows is, “So how can we earn it back?” Episode Links In case you missed it, Dr. White recently blogged about this topic in an entry titled “It's a Matter of Trust.” Several other blogs related to this conversation will also be really helpful for you to to dig into. On the discussion of the shadow lives, read “Evaluating the Fruit Test.” The phrase “there but by the grace of God go I” is so common but so inadequate. Find out why in a blog titled “Why Leaders are Falling.” And finally, consider a blog that explores whether it's possible for someone to be restored to ministry after a moral failing titled “When a Pastor Falls, What Then?” Today, the moral failings of pastors and church leaders seem to populate news feeds and socials. And it's doing so much harm to the witness of the Church. There are two podcasts we'd suggest you go back and listen to related to today's conversation: CCP4: On Pastors and Moral Failings and CCP31: On Celebrity Pastors. To help with understanding how to gain back lost trust, Dr. White recommended a book written by Henry Cloud titled, Trust: Knowing When to Give It, When to Withhold It, How to Earn It, and How to Fix It When It Gets Broken. Finally, we also want to share some articles with you that dive into the lack of trust the American public has toward organized religion and its leaders: Lydia Saad, “Historically Low Faith in U.S. Institutions Continues,” Gallup, July 6, 2023. Megan Brenan and Jeffrey M. Jones, “Ethics Ratings of Nearly All Professions Down in U.S.,” Gallup, January 22, 2024. Kate Shellnutt, “Above Reproach? Fewer Americans See Pastors as Ethical,” Christianity Today, January 25, 2024. For those of you who are new to Church & Culture, we'd love to invite you to subscribe (for free of course) to the twice-weekly Church & Culture blog and check out the Daily Headline News - a collection of headlines from around the globe each weekday. We'd also love to hear from you if there is a topic that you'd like to see discussed on the Church & Culture Podcast in an upcoming episode. Slides: Slide of current news stories Serving in a World of Selfishness - Philippians 2 Prison Break Writing from a prison in Rome to Philippi where he had also been in prison He was released from prison in Philippi He had converted a jailer in Philippi He was writing to tell them how to break out of prison without leaving the cell Theme: "Attitude Determines Altitude" (cf. Phil. 4:4) Ch. 1: Paul's Attitude Ch. 2: Christ's Attitude Ch. 3: Wrong Attitude Ch. 4: Attitude Adjustment Oneness of Mind Phillipians 2:1 - Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, 2 make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose, but also for the interests of others. Oneness of Mind Encouragement in Christ -> same mind Consolation of Love -> same love Fellowship of Spirit -> united in spirit Affection & Compassion -> one purpose Philippians 2:2-4 - 2 make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. 3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, bu with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; 4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Philippians 2-8 - 5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although he existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be gasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Savior's Mind: Humiliation "Attitude" - "to think, form or hold an opinion, disposition" To be one we must be humble To be humble we need to learn to think like Jesus John 13:15 "For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you." Philippians 2:5-6 5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be gasped, John 1:1-3 Colossians 1:15; Hebrews 1:3 John 17:5 Philippians 2:5-8 5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. What did He give up? Divinity? Matthew 1:23 John 8:58 John 20:28 Gave up privilege power place Not position, divine person-hood Emptied self by becoming human Philippians 2:5-8 5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Often interchangeable, but seem to be contrasted here: Morphe (form, v6-7) - Essential nature, that does not change Schema (appearance, v8) - Outward appearance that can change His internal essence and nature was/is divine. His outward appearance changed & he became human. Though divine, he became fully human and experienced life as a human being John 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. Acts 17:30 "Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, 31 because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead." Heb 2:17 Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted. Heb 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Phil 2:7-8 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. NASU “Right Hand of God” (Mark 16:19) Change of Mind Phil 2:12 So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. “Work Out” – “Accomplish, Bring to completion” Jesus worked to save by humble obedience The Father is at work (energeo) in us Therefore, we need to “go to work” and put our faith into action by humble obedience What does working out your salvation look like? Phil 2:14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing; 15 so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world, “Without grumbling or disputing” Blameless: “no cause or ground of complaint” Innocent: “unmixed” Above Reproach: “without blame, fault, ridicule or disgrace” “among whom you appear as lights in the world” The Savior's Mind Be him to be one, be one to be him Then we shine as lights in a dark world Photo of Captain Emil Kapaun Do I have the attitude of Christ? An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, skillful in teaching, not overindulging in wine, not a bully, but gentle, not contentious, free from the love of money. He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity (but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?), and not a new convert, so that he will not become conceited and fall into condemnation incurred by the devil. And he must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he will not fall into disgrace and the snare of the devil. 1 Timothy 3:2-7
Today we look at Colossians chapter 1:21-23., we look at the intentionality of our Father. We learn that in Christ we are Holy, Blameless and Above Reproach. We are broken we need reconciliation, yet when Jesus saw us he saw our value and said we are worth dyeing for. Would we choose to trust in Christ words over us today. Christ Birth begins the Blessing of Good News From The Father – Revealed in the Names Of Christ's Birth. Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows, after His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found with child of the Holy Spirit." Matthew 1:18When the proper time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a virgin woman, (Gal 4:4) just as the Lord Himself Declared through the Prophet, "Hold a virgin shall conceive and give birth to a Son, and Show Call His Name Immanuel," Which Is Translated, "God with You." (Isaiah 7:14, Matthew 1:23)This is the Holy Child the angel Gabriel proclaimed to Mary she would conceive and give the Name Jesus. The Angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found grace (free, spontaneous, absolute favor and loving-kindness) with God. And listen! You will become pregnant and will give birth to a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus. He will be great (eminent) and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to Him the throne of His forefather David, And He will reign over the house of Jacob throughout the ages; and of His reign there will be no end. (Isa 9:6-7; Dan 2:44, Luke 1:30-33) Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place under these circumstances: When His mother Mary had been promised in marriage to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be pregnant [through the power] of the Holy Spirit. And her [promised] husband Joseph, being a just and upright man and not willing to expose her publicly and to shame and disgrace her, decided to repudiate and dismiss (divorce) her quietly and secretly. (Matthew 1:18-19)But as he was thinking this over, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary [as] your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of (from, out of) the Holy Spirit. She will bear a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus [the Greek form of the Hebrew Joshua, which means Savior], for He will save His people from their sins [that is, prevent them from failing and missing the true end and scope of life, which is God]. All this took place that it might be fulfilled which the Lord had spoken through the prophet, Behold, the virgin shall become pregnant and give birth to a Son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel–which, when translated, means, God with us. (Isa 7:14, Matt 1:20-23)Jesus which means: ”God is Salvation“ He Who is your Salvation was not the Only Name Given to Christ. He also was Given Immanuel meaning God is with you. Together: the Messiah is God your Salvation Who is with you.-(Isaiah 7:14, Matthew 1:21, 23)Each Day is an Opportunity to Walk with God.Jesus Existed Long Before He Befan Life in a Manger in the Acient town of Bethlemhem. Jesus said, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, before Abraham was born, I AM. (Ex 3:14, John 8:58)As a member of the Trinity, Jesus is the eternal son of God, which means he has no beginning or end (John 1:1). His birth in Bethlehem was merely His physical entrance into the world he created.Jesus was the long-awaited Messiah, Who came to earth to carry out the mission given to Him by His Father. The Question That Each One Must Answer Is the Same Question That Jesus Posed to His Disciples, "Who do you say that I AM?" (MATTHEW 16:15). JESUS IS THE ONLY WAY TO THE Father. (John 14:6)Jesus is the Son of God Who Came to Earth to Reveal the Way to the Father, Then Gave His Life for you, to Redeem you Through His Blood Forgiving your Sins, to Present you Holy and Blameless and Above Reproach in the Father's Sight.-(Ps 23:1, Jn 10:10, Eph 1:7, Col 1:14, 20-22)And there is salvation in and through no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by and in which we must be saved. (Acts 4:12)The Best Gift you can Give is the Gift of yourself. God Gave Himself for you. And Jesus Says: As the Father sent Me, so I also Send you. The LORD Makes you His Present in the Presence of those Where you are; His Beacon of Light in a Dark World. (Jn 3:16, 20:21, Matt 5:16)
If you ever struggle with feeling that God is mad or angry with you, this is a message you need to listen to. In this message, we will talk about how God used Jesus’ death on the cross to reconcile your ‘spiritual bank account’ so that after you believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior that God removes all wrath that had previously been accredited to you and how God now views you as holy, blameless, and without any accusation against you.
