In this episode, Shana is in conversation with Sheema Kermani. You may know Sheema as the dancer in the hit Coke Studios video of Pasoori but, for Sheema, dance is more than an artform. For her, it is also an act of defiance. A classically trained Bharatnatyam dancer, Sheema took on the Pakistani military dictator Zia-ul-Haq when he abolished public dancing. Since then, Sheema has steadfastly defended the rights of minorities and women. In this interview, Sheema talks about her activism, the early days of Aurat March and how she came to perform the feminist anthem “A Rapist in Your Path” in Urdu - a performance that connected Pakistan to the Fourth Wave of Feminism, which has ebbed and flowed around the globe. The wins keep rolling in for Real Madrid. 8 wins out of 8 games played and the last two games were won without their talismanic number 9, Karim Benzema. Three of Madrid's young stars, Vinicius Jr., Rodrygo, and Fede Valverde have been the players responsible for helping keep Real Madrid's win streak alive. Fede Valverde seems determined to make this season a personal best when it comes to scoring goals and Vinicius Jr. has been causing LaLiga defenders so many headaches that the Anti-Madrid Spanish media now want to create a narrative around his goal celebrations being a problem. In this episode, we discuss Real Madrid's wins against Mallorca and RB Leipzig, as well as Vini's dancing and Fede's continued rise. VAMOS MADRID and keep dancing, Vini! Jake, Marty, and Rico are back with another night of live postgame reaction from Thursday night's Sweet 16 slate. Marty, Coach K and their Blue Devils survive against Texas Tech. The magic continues for Duke as they are one win away from a Final Four. In their way, the Muss Bus as his Razorbacks beat down the top team in the nation, Gonzaga. What happened to the Bulldogs? Can Arkansas take down the 1 and 2 seeds in the region and advance to New Orleans? In the South region, the 1-seed Arizona fell to Houston. The Cougars dominated from start to finish in front of a majority home crowd. They now take on Villanova after the Wildcats beat Michigan. Is there a more sure bet than Jay Wright's Wildcats in March? The guys also preview Friday's slate of games and give their favorite picks. Justine Greenland Duke joins us on this episode! Justine is Head of Knowledge Management at Mastercard Foundation in Toronto, where she helps people, teams and organizations make sense of apparent complexity through the thoughtful use of technology. For over 15 years, Justine has focused her efforts on philanthropic organizations. Previously she pursued careers in dance performance and choreography. We discuss the value of knowledge management inside philanthropic foundations, how working backwards from a strategy can make knowledge more useful, and how honing both technical skills and creative skills can help you recognize patterns in both your professional and personal life. Justine tells us how the skills learned in gymnastics and dance, such as discipline, communication and simplifying ideas, have helped her in her professional life. Finally, we explore some tips for managing professional transitions, including taking a break, serendipitous relationships, talking out loud, and journaling. This week, we’re sharing a highly subjective journey through one narrow, eccentric, corridor of radio advertising, as heard through the ears of one man. His name is Clive Desmond. Clive is a radio advertising producer, writer, and composer. He’s been doing it for more than thirty years, and he’s won some of the industry’s top awards. Through those years he’s been sort of a zelig figure: you can find his face somewhere in the margins of every one of the medium’s key aesthetic revolutions. He’s rescued beautiful forgotten nuggets of radio history, and he’s delicately arranged them into a glittering associative chain—a constellation of jingles and spots that somehow all add up, to a life: The life of Clive Desmond as heard through the radio. Listen below to a special bonus playlist of some of the finest radio-advertising nuggets Clive assembled: In this episode, you’ll also hear Josh Wilker read his review of our program. “A man claiming to be from The Organist came to the parking lot gate out back. He said he needed access to the building’s electricity meter. We looked at one another through the bars.†Josh Wilker is the author of the pop-culture memoirs Cardboard Gods, Benchwarmer, and The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training. He lives in Chicago. You can also check out our episode on Mal Sharpe, a man who was among the first wave of fake newsmen, paving the way from everyone from Borat to Colbert. In this week’s episode, Clive Desmond cites Mal as one of the originators of the “man on the street†radio commercial. Special thanks to Doug Thompson, Dan Aron, Nick Ream and Jennifer Sharper.
