I speak with Dr. Christian Conte, mental health specialist, author, and creator of Yield Theory—an approach to communication focused on reducing defensiveness. Dr. Conte has worked with people ranging from inmates in solitary confinement to elite athletes. What happens when we try to communicate with someone who's defensive? Dr. Conte's Yield Theory offers insights for navigating difficult conversations, especially with adolescents and young adults.Dr. Conte explains that meeting people where they are isn't just a nice sentiment—it's the only effective way to communicate. Using the metaphor of a "fool on the mountain" who yells down instructions that can't be heard, he illustrates why we must first join others where they stand. We explore key elements of Yield Theory: humility, curiosity, and non-attachment to beliefs. Dr. Conte describes his three-step approach—listen, validate, explore options—and why it works even in challenging settings. We delve into parenting applications, including how to set firm boundaries while maintaining compassion, why timing matters with teens, and the importance of natural consequences. Dr. Conte shares examples from raising his own daughter, demonstrating how sitting with uncomfortable emotions builds resilience. Our conversation also examines masculinity and what therapy gets wrong about men. How has "toxic masculinity" become problematic? Why do many men feel they cannot express themselves? What does healthy self-control really mean? What happens when we get trapped in what Dr. Conte calls our "cartoon world" of expectations versus reality? Can we learn to align our expectations with how people actually think, feel, and behave?Dr. Christian Conte is a nationally recognized mental health specialist, speaker, and creator of Yield Theory, a powerful approach to communication and emotional management that has transformed lives around the world. With a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision and over 25 years of experience, he has worked with thousands of people - from the depths of solitary confinement in maximum security prisons to elite athletes, military personnel, police and corrections officers, first responders, and high-level professionals. He is known for his direct, compassionate, and no nonsense style, blending ancient wisdom with modern psychology, to teach self-mastery, emotional strength, and inner peace. Dr. Conte's work has been featured on television, in universities, and inside some of the most intense environments on earth. Above all, he is devoted to helping people become the strongest, clearest, and most authentic versions of themselves.Books by Dr. Conte can be found on Amazon. 00:00 Start[00:02:34] Yield Theory and communication.[00:05:40] Yield theory: empathy and humility.[00:08:23] Compassion and firm boundaries.[00:10:47] Compassion in parenting.[00:14:58] Cartoon world versus real world.[00:20:06] Emotional certainty in beliefs.[00:21:35] Changing beliefs and humility.[00:25:18] Modeling intellectual humility and non-attachment.[00:28:40] Meeting people where they are.[00:34:52] Hunger and emotional regulation.[00:38:30] Therapy misconceptions about men.[00:40:28] Controlling your inner world.[00:45:02] Men's emotional expression challenges.[00:48:34] Prison system and men's struggles.[00:52:36] Manipulation in the prison system.[00:54:40] Gameable heuristics and manipulation.[00:59:28] Tough love in masculine relationships.[01:02:00] Teaching children emotional resilience.[01:05:18] Natural consequences in parenting.[01:09:02] Ego states in emotional regulation.[01:12:35] Teaching psychology to everyone.[01:16:03] Differentiation and family enmeshment.[01:19:20] Adolescent parenting and boundaries.[01:22:59] Teaching Life Skills in Therapy.[01:26:25] Knowledge is for everyone.[01:29:45] Teaching beginners and mastery.ROGD REPAIR Course + Community gives concerned parents instant access to over 120 lessons providing the psychological insights and communication tools you need to get through to your kid. If I told you the elective we're about to dive into has an “awkward party” unit, would you believe me? Well, it does, and I can't wait for you to learn about it and start planning an awkward party lesson of your own. Today on the show, we're continuing our creative electives series with veteran teacher Lisa Blake, who's been teaching for 33 years in Northern California. She's built a life skills elective to give her students confidence in how to learn new skills, not just to teach the skills themselves. As she empowers them to explore and discover paths to success, she's not just teaching them to cook, sew, and manage the small talk at an awkward party, she's teaching them to believe they can tackle an area they know nothing about. And you can do the same for your students, whether it's through an entire elective like Lisa, or a smaller life skills unit. So let's dive in and learn how! Life skills are critical to a learner becoming independent. Here, we cover why teaching life skills is important and how we can do it effectively. Life skills include executive functioning skills, personal care, daily living skills, occupational skills, and so much more. The ability of an individual to enhance their life skills has a direct impact on their quality of life as they grow into adulthood. We discuss the importance of making sure learners can achieve life skills without the presence of a teacher or guide. Taking ourselves out of the equation is key. We also talk about working with adult learners, how to break skills down into smaller steps, and more.On Wednesday, April 17th, at 12pm EST, we're hosting a CEU all about how to teach life skills to adult learners. One of our greatest roles as parents, in my opinion, is to teach our children how to be independent, good human beings. While academics are important, are we (society) putting enough emphasis on basic life skills and emotional intelligence? I'm not sure. I think that life skills can often be misunderstood as "chores." However, life skills are independence skills and organizational skills. There's more to intelligence than just IQ. There's EQ (emotional quotient, also known as emotional intelligence). And in my opinion, that is just as important, if not more important, especially in this technological, AI/digital world we live in today. So, how do we raise good humans? It's a great question and we're chatting all about it with our guest today, Dr. Jenny Woo. Who is Dr. Jenny Woo? Jenny Woo, MBA, PhD, is a Harvard-trained researcher and educator. As the founder and CEO of Mind Brain Emotion, she has created a series of award-winning card games and tools to help adults and kids build emotional intelligence and social mastery. Her product line has been used by teachers, psychologists, parents, and teens in more than 50 countries. In addition to her MEd from Harvard, MBA from UC Berkeley, and PhD from UC Irvine, she also spent several years as a Montessori school director and seven years as a human capital consultant at Deloitte and executive coach at Cisco Systems. Dr. Woo teaches emotional intelligence at the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Woo is a two-time TEDx speaker, author, and has been featured in Forbes, Business Insider, Yahoo! Finance, Parents, and The Harvard Gazette. Dr. Woo is the former host of 52 Essential Conversations to Inspire Children for Life podcast. She has also done two TEDx talks, including "How to Be Self-ish Without Feeling Selfish." Dr. Woo has spoken at the Institute for Child Psychology conference, the Happy Family conference, and other gatherings for parents, teachers, educators, and school administrators across the country. That's right, she's been everywhere, and we're excited to have her here with us on our podcast. What Did We Discuss? Today, we're chatting with Dr. Jenny Woo about how to build life skills and emotional intelligence for children. As I mentioned, life skills can often be misunderstood, so we are thrilled to have Dr. Woo here to "chick chat" with us about mastering these important skills, as well as how to raise good humans. As an educator and mother, Dr. Woo has seen and experienced all of this firsthand. Her warm presence on this episode and valuable insight on these topics are encouraging and refreshing. She gives parents and kids a great place to start to grow life skills, and she gives us hope for what the future can look like for our children. Some of the most important years of our development, when we're learning communication skills and how to navigate the world, are spent in the jungles of the elementary school or middle school playground and classroom. It can be very easy to learn the wrong lessons, struggle with friends, and end up carrying those challenges into the future. All of this is especially true for girls, who face a unique set of challenges on top of everything else. Girls on the Run Sierras is working to help fill that social and emotional learning gap by teaching girls from 3rd-8th grade important skills for self esteem, choosing friends, talking about emotions and relationships, and much more during an after-school program based around (but not actually focused on) running. Over the course of a 10-week season, girls might learn about how to choose the right friends for them and how to let the wrong friends go, how to properly name their emotions and the healthiest way to deal with them, what steps they might take to move towards their dreams, and they do it all while preparing for a 5k run with no clocks, and where every girl's race bib is number 1. On this episode, Executive Director for Girls on the Run Sierras Joy Heuer joins the show to talk about the GOTR programs and philosophy, the importance of inclusion for all girls, creating equitable access to after-school programs, how the lessons learned in GOTR are brought back to the classroom and into the home, and so much more. GOTR has Spring and Fall programs, as well as a summer camp, and more information can be found at https://www.girlsontherunsierras.org/ Thank you so much for listening! Today's topic is on teaching life skills to children with autism featuring Julie Swanson, The Life Skills Lady. Julie shares her personal journey advocating for her son with autism, leading to her expertise in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and special education law. The episode emphasizes the importance of incorporating life skills into Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and addresses challenges faced by individuals with autism in various areas of life.
In ABA, a task analysis can be used to break down larger, more complex skills into smaller steps or actions. This makes them more manageable for our learners. To run our business, we use a project management system to make sure everything runs smoothly. It functions like a task analysis in that anyone on our team can follow the same steps to keep things consistent. In the field, skills like hand washing and bathing can be taught using task analysis, which helps practitioners teach learners all steps in the same order. Some of the most common questions we get revolve around teaching life skills and social skills. The reason people find them so overwhelming is because they're so detailed and each person does them differently. Many of the skills we use throughout our lives are essentially a sequence, or a chain of behaviors that lead to a certain outcome. A task analysis can be used to teach the specific parts of each chain. Here, we discuss how to create a task analysis from scratch, the different types of chaining, and how to use prompts to build independence. What's Inside:How to create a task analysis. We live in a crazy, mixed-up world, vastly different from the world 20 years ago. Back then, there were no cell phones, only very rudimentary computers, no internet or social media and the world seemed much calmer as we all had more time to spend in face-to-face communication. We weren't looking more at our phones and less at the world around us, the way many of us do today. Just stand in line at a restaurant or sit at your gate in the airport: ninety percent of people are staring at their phones rather than interacting with the ones around them! But even 20 years ago, parents still needed to impart basic life skills to children, skills all kids need to learn before they move into life as an adult. There are several critical ones that Kate, Jamie, and September are going to chat about today. Listen as they hit on some of the major topics for the current culture we are living in right now. In this episode, we talk about Bryce's first four hours of testing with his new psychologist for neuro-psych testing as well as teaching Bryce life skills. This was recommended by his vision and auditory doctors as well as his neurologist. Our goal is to identify Bryce's strengths and weaknesses that will help guide us to the best curriculum and tools for his education as he approaches his tenth (10th) birthday in October. It has become clear that he has a learning disability that affects his ability to write words which most likely is a result of his stroke. On a more positive note, Bryce is asking more questions and has also expanded his vocabulary. We are excited and encouraged by his growth in this area. With more words, comes more humor. Bryce's delivery of his thoughts and questions have had us laughing out loud more than once the past couple of weeks. Bryce is a funny, mechanical, HAPPY little guy who was diagnosed with autism at age two and is now nine years old. In this episode, the guys are joined by Kerry Fisher and Adam Rosales to talk about the importance of understanding Character and Valuing life skills Kerry has been fascinated by the way the human body works since her earliest days as a competitive gymnast. When she became an attorney, she quickly noticed how difficult it was for people to maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life. She also saw the ill effects of years of working at a high stress, sedentary job. As an antidote to this stressful career, Kerry began a daily yoga practice. She immediately noticed that yoga was the perfect complement to her hectic lifestyle. Hello, hello! Welcome to The Parenting Clubhouse Podcast. Can you believe that this is our final episode of my series to support you during this COVID-19 pandemic? I feel like so much life has happened within these past four weeks. Phew. How are you doing with it all? I hope you're not only hanging in there but thriving. In today's episode I am sharing how we can use this time at home so incredibly wisely with our kids. I think we've all learned (or have been reminded) that life happens, and sometimes we need to go back to our roots and a much simpler lifestyle. So today I'm talking about using this time that we have at home with our kids to teach them the ever-important life skills that they will need now and later on in life. Before we jump to it, I want to let you know about an amazing freebie I have for you… to help teach your young child an important life skill. I'm talking about potty training of course! Check out my 5 Secrets to Potty Training success at www.bit.ly/pottytrainingfreebie to ditch the diapers today! Now let's talk about those life skills, shall we? Let's go to the show! What are life skills? They are those skills that we need for everyday life. Daily living skills if you will. During this pandemic I'm seeing people focus more on life skills: people desiring to farm more; having to do house tasks instead of hiring it out; homeschooling; etc. We are very clearly seeing a NEED for teaching our children life skills during these uncertain times: to save money; to keep social distancing/avoid contact; due to businesses being closed. We want to teach our child life skills so that they know how to complete tasks for themselves, be as self-sufficient as possible and as appropriate. This is true for children of all ages. Potty training is a perfect skill for toddlers to have. And hey, you can save that money that you would have spent on diapers! Check out my 5 Secrets to Potty Training Success freebie to get started today at www.bit.ly/pottytrainingfreebie. As we teach our children important life skills, the skills become more advanced as children become older. Children may learn how to clean and bathe themselves. Middle schoolers may learn how to prepare and cut food. Teens may learn how to budget. As children grow up, their life skills become more advanced. Here are a few different life skills you can begin teaching your children at home: Making the bed Setting the table Doing laundry Washing hands Tying shoes Yard work For younger children, think about the things you do for them on a daily basis that they will eventually do themselves, and begin teaching those skills. For older kids, think about the skills that require more responsibility (like cutting the grass and banking). When you do teach your children these skills, you can use a lot of different strategies: visual aids, a step-by-step list, modeling, providing reminders, etc. It's very important to be more hands on with the teaching up front and then gradually be more hands off as your child learns the skill. Truthfully, this is an opportunity for us to really use our time wisely with our kids. We are at home with our kid anyway so why not teach them those important life skills that will set them up for success in the future? To begin teaching the skill of potty training, check out my freebie (www.bit.ly/pottytrainingfreebie) and my Potty Training Made Easy course (www.bit.ly/pottytrainingmadeeasy). And if you need more ideas to keep your kids occupied and engaged during this time of social distancing, check out my activities list freebie at www.bit.ly/activitiesfreebie. Welcome to Episode 12 of Nooks and Crannies! Alison Smith; Empathetic-Polymathematical Parenting So one day, Matt met Alison on Facebook; next thing they know they are recording a 1hr+ long podcast all about parenting. I will try my best to sum up this fascinatingly rangy conversation… Alison Smith is a Canadian parenting coach who got her start in Elementary education after completing degrees in psychology and education. When pregnant with her first child she embarked on an ongoing journey of discovery and self-education about parenting in a “different” way. After searching in vain for a guru who encapsulated her own approach and doing buckets of research she decided to host a workshop as a way of passing on what she learned to her new network of parents that she had developed. One of the many jump out points for me is Alison’s commitment to running these findings past people who have parented longer than herself as a way of confirming or dispelling her findings. Since then, Alison has developed her own “gentle parenting” model based upon three pillars: “Connection” “Empathy” *Matty’s Super Nerdy Anthro Topic, don’t worry, I held back, somewhat… and “Teaching Life Skills” in addition to a substantial weight placed upon Respect, Understanding, Collaboration, and Reciprocity. This totally flies in the face of conventional wisdom (psychological and pedagogical); among other topics, we discuss how this impacts parenting, schooling, children’s mental and social health as well as some of the wider politics involved in the education system: STEM v the Creative Arts, Critical v Linear Thought and the value of Emotional Intellegence. Okay, so this is about the midway point, and I have not even scratched the surface yet… Additional Topics Covered: spanking and discipline/punishment (yes, I talked Foucault!), how much screen time is too much, fatigue and self-care, parenting relationships, tips for single parents, how to find sneaky child care, the value of getting a children’s climbing wall and that Ol’ Capt Concussion should avoid the adult-sized versions, communication and emotional care, being an entrepreneur, the parent-child relationships and value of valuing children for their perspectives and personalities-believe it or not, sadly, that’s rather revolutionary… To say I learned a few things would be the greatest understatement in Nooks and Crannies’ history! What a wealth of information Alison Smith is and you know what is even better??? She is one of those wonderful people who see the value of passing knowledge on and has the confidence to admit that she does not know “Everything there is to know about Parenting”…for the sake of all of Humanity, Alison-Polymathematical parenting empathy coach-Smith, keep up the Great Works! Maybe someone should fashion some sorta Manifesto out of all this, hey wait a tick, is that a hand-written scroll? Oh, it's from Alison, her gift to all of ya’all :) Special non-monetary thank you goes out once again to Nooks and Crannies very own, very much appreciated, researcher-extraordinaire, Juhli. Your valiant co-host (Matt) suffers from this inexplicable condition and if you do have a few toonies left over, I would love if I saw them go to the Brain Injury Association of the Ottawa Valley. They are a resource center that also holds peer-support and caregiver support events, and sadly, this was the only such place available to Melly and I when we lived there. Episode 123: Teaching Life Skills Through Drama Has anyone ever said to you “It's just drama. It's just theatre. It's not important.” All drama teachers know the importance of their program. The drama classroom is one of the few places where real world life skills are still taught: communication, self-confidence, self-evaluation, creative thinking. These are skills all teens beyond the classroom, beyond school, and Shandra Gallant, Artistic Director of the Langdon Theatre Association thinks so too. Show Notes Rainbows vs Bunnies: Annihilation Episode Transcript Welcome to TFP – The Theatrefolk Podcast – the place to be for Drama teachers, Drama students, and theatre educators everywhere. I'm Lindsay Price, resident playwright for Theatrefolk. Hello, I hope you're well. Thanks for listening. Welcome to Episode 123! You can find the links for this episode at the show notes at theatrefolk.com/episode123. Has anyone ever said to you about your program, “It's just drama – drama. It's just drama. It's just theatre. It's not important.” It happens all the time, right? All the time, it happens to me! And, you know, it's because the drama classroom looks different and acts different than all the other classes. And so, it must not be like all the other classes and it must not be useful or important or worthy and it must not be worthy of being included in the curriculum which is a big problem because that means drama programs disappear. Except that all drama teachers know the importance of their program, right? The drama classroom is one of the few places where real world life skills are taught. You know them. Say them with me, everybody. Communication, self-confidence, self-evaluation, creative thinking – these are the skills everybody – all teenagers – everybody needs beyond the classroom, beyond school, right? A test – testing, one, two, three – testing does not prepare a student for the real world. Life skills, that's what students need, and my guest today, Shandra Gallant, artistic director of the Landgon Theatre Association, she thinks so, too. So, that's what we're going to talk about today. Let's get to it. LINDSAY: All right. Hello, everyone! I am happy to be sitting here talking to Shandra Gallant. Hello there! Hello there, Shanny! That's what your students call you, right? SHANDRA: It's true. Hi! How are you doing? LINDSAY: I'm great. Tell everybody where you are. SHANDRA: Well, I'm technically in my house right here in Calgary, Alberta. LINDSAY: Alberta, excellent! And the reason that we're talking here today is that you have done some of our plays. SHANDRA: I have, yes. We really, really enjoy your plays and lots we've used for our final projects that we do with our group. LINDSAY: Yeah, and what is your group? SHANDRA: I work with the Langdon Theatre Association and we're a little program. We meet once a week for a whole year and we work on life skills through theatre and we put on a final performance. LINDSAY: And that is something which was very interesting to me – the whole notion of using drama to work on life skills. That's actually one of my big mantras, I guess, because I think drama is one of the few places where students are getting any backing in life skills. So, I'm really interested to talk to you about that. But, first, how did you get into this? What is your background in theatre? SHANDRA: Well, I have my BFA and I kind of dabbled in directing. But, originally, I was a stage manager and loved it, and this group actually hired me many, many years ago to stage manage one of their shows and I was so impressed by how they worked with the kids and I was super impressed by the kids' performance that I wanted to be involved and they hired me to teach these kids and I've been doing it for over ten years and they still amaze me. LINDSAY: And why do you think you were drawn to a teaching element as opposed to a performing element?
Nannies have a unique position that allows them to help guide a child in many real life situations. Teaching life skills is not something that you can always plan for however. We talk about how many of the challenges we face with our kids are really teachable moments. Please note: We apologize for the slight echo. We are working to improve our audio quality.
