I've been feeling sad and struggling with PMDD, which was what this episode was originally going to be focused on. But I decided to just go with whatever felt right so I also ended opening up about depression and the anxiety and highs and lows that come with situationships. I hope this brings validation and comfort and that my words help to remind you of how powerful and worthy you truly are. It would mean the world to me if you give a 5 star rating on this podcast to help reach more people as we build this community together :) If you're listening on Apple Podcasts, I would appreciate your feedback in the form of a written rating as well. ___ Thanks to the following sponsors of today's episode:

Winter might've gotten off to a late start, but the cold months are officially here. It's chilly, dark and cloudy for much of the day, triggering some Minnesotans to experience the winter blues or seasonal affective disorder — also known as SAD. Symptoms include feeling sluggish and having low energy, sleeping too much, eating too much and feeling hopeless. While there is no clear cause, doctors believe exposure to less sunlight and shorter days play a role. MPR News host Angela Davis and her guests talk about seasonal affective disorder, what symptoms to watch out for and advice on how to handle the winter blues. Guests: Sabine Schmid is a clinical psychologist and a mood disorder expert. She is the director of Psychology Education and an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School. Bridget Mozina is a licensed marriage and family therapist in Burnsville with a focus on children, teenagers and their families. Her practice is called Grow and Thrive Therapy. In this episode, Dr. Dunni discusses Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and offers strategies for tackling feelings of sadness during the winter months. She explains how changes in seasons, such as colder weather and shorter days, can impact our mood and overall well-being. Dr. Dunni shares her personal experience with feeling sluggish and unmotivated during certain times of the year and highlights common symptoms of SAD, including fatigue, lack of pleasure in activities, low mood, and difficulty concentrating. She emphasizes the importance of seeking help and offers lifestyle changes such as maximizing exposure to natural light, engaging in movement and exercise, maintaining a healthy diet, practicing stress management techniques, and considering therapy or medication if necessary. Dr. Dunni also emphasizes the significance of community support and encourages listeners to reach out and connect with others. KEY TAKEAWAYS Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that occurs in a seasonal pattern, often during the winter months when there is less sunlight. Symptoms of SAD include feeling tired, lack of pleasure in activities, low mood, irritability, guilt, and difficulty concentrating. Lifestyle changes can help manage SAD, such as maximizing exposure to natural sunlight, using light boxes, engaging in movement and exercise, eating a healthy diet, and practicing stress management techniques like meditation and journaling. Seeking help from a healthcare professional is important for proper diagnosis and treatment of SAD, which may include therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy or psychodynamic psychotherapy, as well as antidepressant medication if necessary. Taking vitamin D supplements can also be beneficial for individuals with SAD, as low levels of vitamin D have been linked to depression. BEST MOMENTS"You might have your light box as a proper box, or you might have it as a desk lamp." "Movement is key and I particularly use the word movement rather than exercise." "This kind of therapy, it's like a talking therapy whereby it takes a concept that the way you think and behave affects the way you feel." emotions! love them! emma chamberlain giving me all the inspo today
I've been thinking about grace a lot lately. It really got my attention one day when I was working hard outside with my husband, preparing a section of land to fence in as pasture for my horses. It was good, hard work, and I could see my dreams becoming reality before me. Dreaming out loud I told my husband, "So, I'm thinking we'll put the fence out this direction," motioning with my hands to show where the fencing would go across the field. He invited me to walk with him as he showed me how he envisioned it would all come together."The fence will come out this way and go around the raised beds..." As I followed and listened to him I began to feel bewildered. This was not how I had imagined it would be, or what I thought we had agreed on. I began to pepper him with questions, my cadence shortened, and I felt my throat tense up. Before my eyes I saw him shut down - and for the life of me I couldn't understand why! "Are you angry?" I asked him with surprise. "It's just the way you talk." He said with a flat voice. "Ouch!" I felt stung. I watched him walk away as I felt tears build up behind my eyes. I walked around the green house, sat in the warm sunshine, held my head in my hands, and let the tears fall, stunned how quickly it seemed things fell apart. "Do you feel so sad and lonely - and do you need to know that you are valued and matter - no matter how you talk?" My compassionate witness gently made an empathy guess. "Yes, and I like to be spoken to with kindness," As I let the words and tears flow I gently tapped on my meridians. "when the way I talk bothers someone, I would like to be told with kindness." Silently I tracked my sensations, linking them to the beauty of the underlying needs. "Even though I feel tight tension in my temples, constriction in my throat, needing warmth, needing grace, feeling so low and miserable, right here, right now, I love myself anyway." "Grace, you really value grace." My compassionate witness acknowledged. "How are you living and modeling grace in your life? What does that look like right now?" I looked up to the sky and felt the warmth of the sun and gentle breeze on my face. "I live and model grace when I..." 1. Choose to attend to self-care in the moment meeting needs for warmth and self-connection 2. When I receive empathy and nurturance from my compassionate witness - who so kindly translates for my inner critic 3. When I slow down my inner experience by noticing and tracking my body's sensations and emotions - linking them to divine needs 4. When I honestly express my truth, trusting I am heard and held by Spirit - something so much greater than myself 5. When I ask and trust Love to lead my way, acknowledging how very much Grace means to me and when I take the time to know what that looks like for me personally, and in my relationships. Grace sees with eyes of love even when others do not. Grace hears the heart of the hurting and the beauty of the needs beneath any words and actions that may have been taken. Grace compassionately understands the desperation, the overwhelm, the loneliness, the shame, even the anger, and Grace loves anyway. Grace is available and kind. I just need to be willing to receive Divine Grace - and then expand it by living it out in relationship with others. The tension in my temples released as a tingle radiated down my neck and shoulders, I took a deeper breath and let it out ever so slowly. Turning my thoughts back to the one who is my husband, I acknowledged to myself the complexity of life that he holds. My heart warmed with the depth of love I harbor for that man. Inspired by Grace, I went inside to make a repair with the man who so greatly contributes toward making my dreams become reality. What does Grace look like for you? It's normal to feel a little SAD in the winter. Seasonal affective disorder affects millions of Americans. Social worker Karla Salem has tips to overcome it.
Sadness is meant to be felt - not to be shamed. Yet often we bottle it up and hide it away because we've been shamed for feeling sad. We layer on judgment and feel the pressure for not feeling "better" than we actually do. This gap between how we actually feel and how we believe we're supposed to feel creates chaos within. Or body doesn't know how to handle it, and we make ourselves spiritually, physically, and/or mentally ill over it. So let's drop the expectation that we're supposed to be happy (says who?). Let's instead let ourselves feel how we actually feel. Not for the sake of getting through it to feel better, but for the sake of FEELING in itself. The wisdom from the emotion can only come when we drop the need for it to feel a certain way or provide a certain outcome to us. This week's episode explores the depth within sadness and allows us to be okay not being okay. Enjoy it - or not - whatever feels right to you :) __________________________________________________________________ GET EXCLUSIVE CONTENT, RESOURCES, AND OFFERS: Join our newsletter by going to https://www.beliefseed.com/newsletter __________________________________________________________________
A lot of times people cling to their stuff because letting go would make them feel sad, but what if that's not a bad thing? In my opinion we can't avoid sadness so we better learn to live with it. Most people think we are either happy or sad, we either feel joy or grief, it's either a yes or a no. But Life isn't black or white, good or bad, positive or negative, happy or sad, life is always both. Listen in to this short solo episode on why you don't want to avoid being sad by not letting go of your clutter and how feeling sad can also be good. making the right decision doesn't always mean it's easy. making the right decision doesn't always mean it will make you happy at first. at some moments in life, you will be required to make decisions that won't necessarily make you happy even if they are right. what's important to remember is that our right decisions today protect the security of our future happiness to come. you won't always get the fruits of your seed in a day, but if you continue to take care of it.. you eventually will.. our decisions are the same, you won't always feel happy about the right choice, but you will years later ♡ ---this episode is sponsored by Rabata. We all have to weather internal storms in life. This 35 minute Yoga Nidra meditation is to bring ease for those dark times of deep sorrow, depression, or sadness. Yoga Nidra is backed by science as a way to become less emotionally reactive and to balance the nervous system. Yoga Nidra is not a yoga practice, it is translated to Yoga Sleep, and is usually done by lying down or finding rest in a comfortable and supported seated position. No experience is necessary.Support the showIt should be noted that some people can be distressed by meditation and mindfulness and therefore this might not be appropriate for everyone and is not a treatment for any disorder and is not a substitute for professional care.Make a donation at https://www.patreon.com/restfulmedicine Subscribe @Restful Medicine on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVWbsKjfzIbDRM8PeZfwqww/videos?view=0Insight Timer https://insighttimer.com/elkejohnsonElke is a 500 hr YT and is certified in Grief Yoga (R), Trauma Sensitive Yoga, and Transformational Sleep. Embrace Peace is the topic for today. What are we truly searching for? Is it happiness, joy, bliss, or maybe it's comfort, elation, or satisfaction? The meanings of a lot of those words overlap. I don't feel like it's normal to feel blissful all the time. Bliss is at the high end of the happiness scale. Then there's contentment and peace and calm. That's at a different place on the happiness scale. I believe, for most people, being calm and focused is part of being happy. I also think being calm and focused is part of having inner peace. Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify What Are We Searching For? During the holiday season, we hear a lot about peace. We notice the word in songs and movies and just as an expression when someone says, they just want to experience some peace in their lives. Peace comes from within. As we learn how to find happiness and joy, we start to realize that inner peace is at the root of all the good feelings we're looking for. After interviewing over 750 guests for Mindfulness Mode, some common themes have started to become obvious. One of those themes is that if I am living with contempt for myself, at any level, it negatively affects everything about my life. It certainly affects how I treat others and how good I feel about my life. Love Yourself? I'm sure you've heard people say that ‘to truly love others, you have to love yourself'. When I first heard that, I thought it sounded strange, and I realize I'm not the only one who had this reaction. Whether you call it ‘loving yourself', or ‘being positive about who you are', or ‘avoiding self-bullying', all of those perspectives are similar. To move towards a happier, more peaceful life, it's necessary to start liking yourself, or loving yourself, as the phrase indicates. One of the ways to start feeling more positive towards yourself is to feel and show compassion as much as possible, in as many circumstances as possible. One of my mantras is centred around seeing everyone and everything, with compassion. It's easy to be compassionate about family members you love, or even random strangers. But try having compassionate thoughts about someone who hates you or has inflicted harm on you. That's when it becomes really challenges and requires daily practice. Embrace Compassion Once you can start to feel compassion even towards the most difficult people and situations, you will start to have more kind thoughts about yourself. If there is someone in the world who hates you, remember that the hate they hold is about them, not about you. This is easy for me to say, but not as easy to truly grasp and live by if someone in your life hates you. A person who holds hate is filled with inner hate themselves and they don't have any idea how to find inner peace and happiness because they are so filled with anger and hate. What About Grief? Let's talk about grief. Grief can be overwhelming and can make you feel like there is no hope. Grief has to be embraced and we have to live with the pain and experience the darkness that grief brings. Some people sink deeply into their grief and take months or years to come out the other side. Other people can experience grief for less time and then move forward. You've heard guests on the show talk about feeling the pain and moving toward the pain instead of trying to resist it. When you try to resist the pain, it lasts longer and can be more intense. Zig Ziggler was know to say, ‘What you resist, persists'. Feeling Sad? During this holiday season, you'll hear all kinds of happy reminders of the season, including sleigh bells, cheerful song lyrics, partying, happy celebrations. Does all this ‘happiness' make you sad or bring you down? That's not unusual. You share this trait with hundreds and thousands of people. Notice how you are feeling in your body about this happiness around you. Does it make you angry? Does it cause hurt and pain somewhere in your body? Narrow down the area of your body where you feel this pain and anguish. Close your eyes and think about the pain and anger in your body that is related to the happiness of the season you're constantly being reminded of. Body Scan Now narrow that feeling down even more. Is it in your neck or shoulders? Is it in your chest? Maybe it's in your gut or your lower back, or your knees. Do you feel an ache? Take the time to do a body scan. Go to a safe, quiet place, close your eyes and begin to notice how you feel in each area of your body. Start with your head, your forehead, and your temples. Then move down your body and be aware of any pain or discomfort in each body location. You can repeat this practice until you are aware of where the most pain resides in your body. If you meditate, this can be part of your meditation practice. You will become more and more aware of where the most pain and anger reside in your body. Allow yourself to move toward the pain. Embrace what your body is experiencing and focus on it. Wishing You Peace Spend time with others who have this sense of peace that I'm talking about. You'll experience this in animals as well as humans. Other beings can be very calming and comfortable to be around, or some can have the opposite effect. Put some effort into being around those who are calm and peaceful and you'll start feeling more calm and peaceful as well. As we move through December, I wish you the very deepest level of peace that you can possible achieve, whatever PEACE means to you. It may be happiness, a form of bliss, a feeling of calmness or focus, but more than anything, I wish you peace. Susan Cain is a best-selling author and speaker. There's a tyranny of positivity in the modern world. Talking about emotions like longing and sorrow are not usually encouraged. And yet tons of people feel like this and hearing others tell us about their melancholy brings us closer to them, so how can we integrate bittersweet emotions into our lives and what can they teach us about ourselves?
