It's easy to speak about mountain biking on the surface level. But speaking to its potential for transcendence, ecstasy, and yes, art, is another thing entirely--thus, we called in a poet to help.  Albert Flynn DeSilver has been an obsessive mountain biker for over 30 years. He is a trail advocate and wilderness explorer. Albert is also an internationally published writer, speaker and teacher who has worked with thousands of kids as a California Poet in the Schools, served as a county Poet Laureate, and taught writing workshops throughout North America at places like the Esalen Institute, the Omega Institute, and the British Institute in Paris. He has given a TEDx talk and bombed spectacularly, and then dusted himself off to go on to host and share the stage with writer-luminaries like Elizabeth Gilbert, Cheryl Strayed, Maxine Hong Kingston and many others. Albert writes, rides and resides in Northern California. We talk about: Reaching a transcendent state on a bike [6:03] The taboo of ecstasy [9:33] Moving meditation [12:45] How family history/upbringing can inform our practice [14:27] Using mtb to check in or check out [20:12] The art of mountain biking [24:36] The demand of mtb to pay attention [28:20] The social component of the sport [32:30] Grief on the trail [37:42] Dancing and doodling [44:09] Referenced in this episode: Singletrack Mind by Albert Flynn DeSilver Writing as a Path to Awakening, also by Albert “Miracles” by Walt Whitman Delores LaChapelle We also referenced this episode with Melissa Gill Let's connect! Meditation, mindfulness, and creativity, how do they work hand in hand? I like to meditate twice a day. It's a practice that took 8 or 9 years to develop. I first learned meditation using the app Headspace and took guided meditation courses. Then, I started taking some in-person meditation courses. I even went away on a meditative retreat. Because I spend so much time working alone, I find meditation helpful for mental health and learning how to focus and gain a bit of perspective. These days, I also use the meditation app Waking Up, which Sam Harris created. Sam interviews guests and experts about the topic of meditation and the different types of meditative practices that are out there. It's a good way of understanding how you can fit meditative and mindfulness practice into your writing, creativity, and overall life. This week, I caught up with Albert Flynn DeSilver, an award-winning, internationally published writer, speaker, and workshop leader. He's also a former Poet Laureate and has written several books, including a memoir and a book about writing, creativity, and meditation called Writing as a Path to Awakening. Albert hosts workshops whereby he teaches attendees how to develop a meditative practice and build a writing habit. In this episode, we discuss:How Albert got into writingHis fascinating writing journey to dateBecoming Marin County's first poet laureateHow meditation can help a writerHow he brings meditation and writing together in workshopsAlbert would love to offer listeners to the episode a 30-minute FREE writing and coaching session on any aspect of writing, editing, or publishing. Albert Flynn DeSilver is an award-winning internationally published writer, speaker, poet and workshop leader known for merging the art of creative writing with the evolutionary practice of mindfulness meditation. Founder of the Brilliant Writers Online Writing School, his mission as a writing teacher is to "remind people of their inherent creative genius and reignite their joy, fun, spontaneity and wisdom the practice of process writing."And yet, as he shares in this interview, his tumultuous childhood was anything BUT joyful, growing up with an alcoholic mother and distant father who left him and his sisters in the hands of a controlling, abusive, violent caretaker. As a result , feeling unsafe, anxious and fearful, he turned to alcohol at age 12 and became a suicidal alcoholic in his 20s. Albert's memoir “Beamish Boy: A Memoir of Recovery & Awakening” documents his early life which he shares in this interview. He also tells Caryl about the pivotal incidents that changed his life so radically that eventually he quit drinking and became an acclaimed poet, being appointed the first Poet Laureate of Marin County California from 2008-2010. He has since presented on stages with Cheryl Strayed, Elizabeth Gilbert and many others.Albert reveals how he views writing practice and meditation as a path to awakening, the subject of his book Writing as a Path to Awakening: A Year to Becoming an Excellent Writer and Living an Awakened Life.He believes meditation and writing are a "dynamic duo"  to cultivate true depth in your own writing—so your words reveal layers of profound insight that inspire and move your readers. Combining the two activates a more complete, creative, authentic and spiritual self.Albert discloses his own writing practice which usually begins with meditative silence and stillness.  He says for him authentic emotional writing comes from the body. It comes from this experience of being in the body, courageously being willing to go into those deeper places of sensation - of fear energy, of anger. And also, by the same token, delight energy and joy energy. He shares his first Kickstarter Project currently underway in mid-2022 - a book of five travel essays with 10 outstanding photographs by Swedish photographer Mattias Fredriksson - titled Singletrack Mind, Finding Wisdom & the Poetry of Life on Two Wheels. As a special offer to my podcast listeners, Albert is offering a free 30 minute consultation where he will guide you on any writing related topic and offer the opportunity to join his Brilliant Writers community.https://calendly.com/albertflynndesilver/30min✅ Recommended - get my FREE CHECKLIST:5 Book Hooks you must have to Captivate non-fiction Readers: Checklist (Free): https://www.writethebookinsideyou.com/freegift ✅ Connect with Caryl Westmore on social media! https://www.facebook.com/carylwestmoreauthorhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/bookinsideyouhttps://twitter.com/carylwestmoreukShow Sponsors: Books for Writers by Caryl Westmore: Bust Writer's Block Forever www.bustwritersblock.com and The Inner Path of Writing, Make Love not War to the Writer Within . Writing can be used as a powerful tool for self-healing.  We all have a unique journey as we grow and evolve.  The beauty of the practice of writing is that it is available to help us anytime and anywhere. Albert Flynn DeSilver is a gifted writer and author coach.  He provides online programmes for exactly this type of experience and opens the door to honest dialogue for healing in his work. His profound book, “Writing as a Path to Awakening” opens the reader up to self-examination and the use of the written word as a courageous personal growth strategy. n Albert's memoir “Beamish Boy,” he shares his own personal journey of going from suicidal alcoholic to widely published author and spiritual teacher, showing how writing can be central to a healing path.  The book is filled with moments of life challenges that awaken us to remember how our life stories are also our pathway to healing and self-understanding.  He inspires the reader to become more compassionate with themselves, as they reflect on their own troubling experiences, and reminds us how to integrate the suffering through writing and embodied presence. This is the practice of truth-telling through writing; in which writing (telling) the story helps to let go of the story—until one day we find ourselves reconnected to life, waking up to the freedom and love that is our very nature. Albert has worked with numerous international bestselling authors like Cheryl Strayed, Dani Shapiro, and Elizabeth Gilbert, among others. These authors have been an inspiration for millions and an opportunity for individuals to better understand how unpackaging your life story can lead to personal growth. If you're sober curious and want to try your first 30 days, or maybe you've relapsed and you'd like a little extra support tackling the typical hurdles of early recovery, then check it out at SobrietyReset.com.    It's an online course with a private support group that is designed using proven tools and strategies to put you in the right mindset for success.    For your convenience there's an FAQ page on website, or you can simply reach out to me at arlina@soberlifeschool.com and I'll respond within 24 hours.   Okay, so. Today my guest is Albert Flynn DeSilver, author, poet and writing coach for “The Mindful Authors Accelerator”.    Albert has a cool story and I really appreciated his transparency in talking about the violence he experienced as a young child, the highs and lows of his drinking and using, but also the unique path he had to recovery.    He said something I'll never forget in the interview “Tell the story to let go of the story”. I feel like that really captures the essence of why we do so much journaling and sharing in recovery programs. That was definitely the case for me and countless others I've talked to. He now dedicates a lot of time into helping aspiring writers to tell their stories in book format. If you've been thinking about writing a book, you'll really appreciate this one. It's still a cool story even if you aren't.    So without further adu, please enjoy this episode with Albert.

Episode Summary In Episode #14 https://howhumanswork.us (Jef Szi) welcomes poet, memoirist, and writing coach https://albertflynndesilver.com (Albert Flynn DeSilver) to the podcast for an engaging conversation about the personal passages in his life as well as the passages that have come with being a writer. We begin by exploring Albert's latest book project on consciousness and addiction. On the heels of that we are given a few of Albert's secret sauce ingredients for guiding writers in particular, but creatives in general. Albert's then takes us into the moving contours of how the writing process awakens us to the unseen field of possibility and self-discovery, both in grace and in hardship. Not just in theory, but from the ache of his own adversities. Trusting the Wild Mind then turns toward Albert's own upbringing and intiations into, among other things, the problematic side of alcohol at sleep-away camp and at the neighborhood “Derelict Den." Along the way we come to see how the destructive elements of Albert's coming-of-age was rooted in childhood pains but would eventually lead to crisis moments that brought Albert to a life more connected to nature, words and art, and the depths of his own nature. In this heartful episode with Albert, we can hear an intimate portrait of change and healing and how chance and calling come together in on the long road of one life. Sharing a mosaic of passages, we eventually arrive with Albert as he finds https://www.spiritrock.org (Spirit Rock Meditation Center) and where meetings with https://jackkornfield.com (Jack Kornfield) and http://jamnian.org (Anjahn Jumnian) brought Albert further along on his destiny to blend the art of writing with dedication to the practices of awakening to a deeper connection to his original nature. https://www.instagram.com/albert_flynn_desilver/ (Connect with Albert on Social) ***https://www.patreon.com/howhumansworkpod (Support the How Humans Work Podcast)***

In today’s episode, I’m speaking with Albert Flynn DeSilver an amazing poet, memoirist, novelist, teacher, and speaker. He is an extraordinary soul who has been able to translate his own pain, grief, sorrow, confusion and hard times during his childhood to beautiful words and poetry.  He is one of the most gentle souls I have come across during my podcasting journey. He is sensitive and wonderful to speak to. The way that he expresses his own story I felt this healing coming over me and I’m certain you will feel it too. There is a softness about him even when he is describing moments of violence and pain. He has found a way to his own healing even though it’s still happening, his progress and his path has been a transformational journey that I believe will change your life. We talk about his path to healing and forgiveness from childhood abuse and recovering from alcoholism. His sense of story is so visual and physical, in everything he said I was able to see very clearly his story through his own eyes as if I was there. I hope you do too. “Every experience is given to us and there is a Divine purpose behind it.”  ~Albert Flynn DeSilver   I hope that if you are someone who wishes to be a writer, poet or novelist and you don’t think you have what it takes, please remember this conversation.
