This week, we're checking in to the heartbreak hotel and taking the express checkout to Hell as Spooktober continues with a minor forgotbuster based on a story by Stephen King. It's 2007's 1408, directed by Mikael Håfström, and starring John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, Mary McCormack, Jasmine Jessica Anthony, Tony Shaloub, Isiah Whitlock Jr. and Len Cariou. The movie is not nearly scary enough to really leave a lasting impression, but it's not bad either, as its Swedish director injects a good amount of visual flair into a one-location concept, and Cusack is more than capable of carrying the load in what is largely a one-man show. Plus: We've got a mixed bag of theatrical field reports, as our intrepid hosts have combined to see The Wild Robot and Megalopolis! If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, 1408 is currently streaming on Hollywood Suite north of the border at the time this episode was released. You can probably also find it at your local library. Other works discussed in this episode include the Netflix Fear Street trilogy, Who Invited Them?, Late Night With The Devil, V/H/S/2, V/H/S: Viral, Cloverfield, The Blair Witch Project, [·REC], Quarantine, Searching, Paranormal Activity, The Mist, Scream, Talk To Me, Night of the Living Dead, Resident Evil, Dawn of the Dead (2004), 28 Days Later, Shaun of the Dead, Friday the 13th Part 2, The Babadook, Malignant, Barbarian, Terrifier, Star Trek (2009), Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, Mr. McMahon, Morbius, Poltergeist, The Shining, Room 104, Planet Terror, Death Proof, Halloween (2007), The Devil's Rejects, and Black Sheep. We'll be back next week as Spooktober continues with a well-regarded horror classic from one of the original masters of the genre, as we finally catch up with Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, currently streaming in Canada on Netflix at the time of publication. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!

Just over a year ago, as Broadway opened a revival of the classic Stephen Sondheim musical Sweeney Todd, The Gilded Gentleman was honored to sit down with one of the stars of the original 1979 Broadway production.Sarah Rice, who went on to a distinguished career in opera as well as leading roles in musical theatre, originated the role of Johanna playing opposite such Broadway legends as Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou. Sarah covered how she got started in theatre, came to New York with two cats and a piano to join the cast of the original The Fantasticks, and then was cast in her career changing role as Broadway's first Johanna.  Perhaps most fascinating in Sarah's chat with Carl were her reminiscences and recollections of being directed and prepared for the role by the great masters Hal Prince and Stephen Sondhiem themselves.  Sarah ultimately became one of today's most important interpreters of Stephen  Sondheim's music.  Sarah passed away suddenly earlier this winter and her loss is a profound one for those who knew her personally and those who were touched by her beautiful voice and many appearances on stage.   As a tribute to her memory and her artistry, The Gilded Gentleman is revisiting the interview portion of last Spring's show as a tribute to her memory.

DescriptionWith the passing of Dame Angela Lansbury in 2022, it reminded me of one of my favourite Sondeim musicals, Sweeney Todd. She played the first Mrs Lovett in 1979. Take a minute to get the scoop!Dame Angela Lansbury singing The Worst Pies in London.Fun FactThe original production of Sweeney Todd opened on Broadway March 1, 1979, at the Uris Theatre (now the Gershwin). The show, featuring music and lyrics by Sondheim and a book by Wheeler, was directed by Harold Prince and starred Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury. The production received eight Tony Awards in 1979—including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score—as well as 11 Drama Desk Awards and the Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Musical. It went on to be revived twice on Broadway and adapted into a 2007 film, in addition to the recent Off-Broadway production.__________________________________________________________________About Steven, HostSteven is a Canadian composer & actor living in Toronto. XXXIX. As the famed "demon barber of Fleet Street" gets ready to flash his razor and do his deeds once again in a new Broadway production, The Gilded Gentleman goes back in time to the early years of London's Victoria era to look at just how Sweeney Todd and his tale came to be.  Born in the world of the sensational and gruesome stories of the "penny dreadfuls", Sweeney Todd and his story were quite different from what theater audiences know today.  The episode features a very special treat - an interview with Sarah Rice who created the role of Johanna, Sweeney Todd's daughter in the original 1979 Broadway production of "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street".  Sarah shares what it was like to get the role, how she went about creating the character, and most of all, what it was like to work with extraordinary colleagues such as Angela Lansbury, Len Cariou, and of course Stephen Sondheim and Hal Prince themselves.  In the interview, Sarah shares the most important lessons she learned from Stephen Sondheim and Angela Lansbury in particular.

00h 00’00” Johanna – Anthony Warlow 00h 01’47” Presentación 00h 03’23” Cabecera 00h 04’35” Inicio 00h 05’04” Prelude 00h 05’44” The ballad of Sweeney Todd 00h 09’35” No place like London 00h 13’06” The barber and his wife 00h 16’09” The worst pies in London 00h 20’37” Poor thing 00h 24’06” My friends 00h 26’48” The ballad of Sweeney Todd 00h 28’30” Green finch and linnet bird 00h 31’33” Ah, Miss 00h 33’33” Johanna 00h 36’37” Pirelli’s miracle elixir 00h 40’28” The contest 00h 47’46” The Ballad of Sweeney Todd 00h 48’20” Wait 00h 50’33” The Ballad of Sweeney Todd 00h 51’19” Johanna 00h 55’35” Kiss me / The ladies in their sensitivities 01h 01’52” Pretty women 01h 07’32” Epiphany 01h 11’37” A little priest 01h 19’35” God, that’s good 01h 26’37” Johanna 01h 32’38” By the sea 01h 37’17” Wigmaker sequence 01h 41’55” Not while I’m around 01h 46’51” Parlor song 01h 55’02” Final sequence 02h 08’26” The ballad of Sweeney Todd 02h 11’20” Curiosidades y anécdotas 02h 14’32” My friends – Johnny Depp & Helena Bonham Carter 02h 17’49” My friends – Michael Cerveris & Patti LuPone 02h 20’52” Conclusión y agradecimientos 02h 23’17” Prop del mar

Lady in White (1988)   An American supernatural mystery film directed, produced, written and scored by Frank LaLoggia, and starring Lukas Haas, Len Cariou, Alex Rocco and Katherine Helmond. The plot follows a schoolboy in 1962 upstate New York who becomes embroiled in the mystery surrounding a series of child murders after he witnesses the ghost of a young girl who was murdered in his school's coat closet.   Much of filming took place in Lyons, New York, which took advantage of the appropriate local lore and scenery. The story is based on a version of The Lady in White legend, concerning a woman who supposedly searches for her daughter in Durand-Eastman Park in Rochester, New York, where the director hails from.   One Dark Night (1983)   An American supernatural horror film directed by Tom McLoughlin and starring Meg Tilly, E. G. Daily, and Adam West. The film follows three teenagers sent to a mausoleum for the night as part of a high school initiation rite. A dead, telekinetic occultist returns from the dead and haunts them, forcing the three to survive the night inside the crypt. The film was conceived and filmed under the title Rest in Peace before Poltergeist, but due to post-production problems, the film was delayed and was released in theatres in 1983.  After a period of four years failing to sell the script to various studios McLoughlin and Hawes found a group of Mormon investors who were willing to finance the film for one million dollars on the condition that they started filming in three weeks.   Opening Credits/Introduction (01.52); With Nothing To Say Kitten Podcast (19.08); Oh My GOD!!! Sort of-guest Arwen Myers—soprano, Sweeney stan, and executive producer of this podcast—joins Peter and Nathan for a wide-reaching conversation about her favorite musical, which just happens to be about murder & meat pies (& Victor Garber). That's right: it's the 1979 Tony-Award winning Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street!   We talk about: - The medieval chant Dies Irae and how it frames Sweeney Todd as a story about death, violence, and revenge with explicitly religious overtones.   – Who's the real villain of Sweeney Todd? We talk about how none of these characters are who they appear to be, and how the music helps to signal what's going on underneath. – The various versions of Christianity that haunt this show, notions of sacred violence, sin & sacrifice, and the redemptive promise—or false lure?—of blood.   – The social and cultural aspects of the world that's being presented – and we make of the warning embedded in this very dark musical. Is Sweeney "out there..." or is he inside each of us?   You'll hear: Angela Lansbury, Len Cariou, Ken Jennings, Victor Garber, and Edmund Lyndeck on the Original Broadway Cast Recording singing "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd," "A Little Priest," "Johanna," "The Worst Pies in London," "Epiphany," and "Not While I'm Around."   Continue the conversation with Peter (@pgeinvan) and Nathan (@nathan_lerud) on Twitter, and follow the Gospel of Musical Theatre on Instagram or Twitter @gospelofmt.

Although recognized for his presence on television for the past eight seasons (as Tom Selleck's dyspeptic father on the long running hit series “Blue Bloods”), Cariou has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in the theatre, including originating leads in two landmark Stephen Sondheim musicals. In Broadway and the Bard, he is able to give full voice to an idea that he has harbored since his first prophetic Broadway season when he appeared as Shakespeare's Henry V and followed by a starring role in the musical Applause. In this delightful play of verse and song, Cariou combines his two great loves – Shakespeare and American Musical Comedy –into one rich and diverse tapestry. Len Cariou is a distinguished member of the Theatre Hall of Fame and a three-time Tony® nominee for Applause, A Little Night Music, and for his legendary performance as Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Tony®Award winner, Best Actor). Episode #86 Sitting down with David Warrack was a real treat for me. David strikes me as someone who has, over time, become even more passionate about the arts and living a creative lifestyle. He has not become jaded or bitter about certain projects not going the way he wanted or maybe not even being produced at all. He has figured out a way to adapt and go with the flow of change in the industry through his career as an artist. David is a real champion of the artist. Your success is his success and he strives to create that kind of supportive environment wherever he goes by creating and producing new work, cheering on his colleagues, and most of all listening to the thoughts and feelings of others until they feel understood. The last thing he said to me before we parted was, “I am only an email away” and after spending time with him, I knew he meant it. Sometimes it’s what people say that impacts me the most and sometimes it's the impact of who they are that leaves the biggest impression. With David, it was both. In this episode, we discuss what changes he would like to see happen in the entertainment industry, why he believes every artist should explore writing on some level, what was the biggest takeaway from his lunch with Leonard Bernstein and so much more!   About David: Conductor, Pianist, Organist, Composer, Lyricist, Book-Writer, Musical Director, Orchestrator, Arranger, Singer, Vocal Coach, Music Producer, Producer (theatre, television, recordings), Guest Lecturer, Teacher Toured for fifteen years with Maureen Forrester, starting with the Vancouver Symphony at EXPO 86 (CD), 5 years with Jeff Hyslop (CD), and 8 years with Michael Burgess, in each case as Musical Director/Accompanist/Conductor.  In 2013, enjoyed a 19 concert cross Canada tour with Rebecca Caine and Michael Burgess.  2010 – 2015:  conductor of the Rose Orchestra in Brampton.   Starting in 2017 – touring with the quartet of Rebecca Caine, Ben Heppner, Gary Relyea, and Jean Stillwell. Musical Director of over 200 shows for stage or television, including SHENANDOAH on Broadway, 9 of Ross Petty’s Pantomimes at Toronto’s Elgin Theatre, the cross Canada tour of JACQUES  BREL …, the Vancouver production of UNFORGETTABLE, seven consecutive years at the Elora Festival, and all of the CBC’s DuMAURIER SEARCH FOR STARS.   Founding Conductor of the Canada Pops Orchestra. Credited as writer or co-writer of 79 professionally produced musicals, including some of the longest running shows in Toronto’s Theatre History (FLICKS, SWEET REASON, THE VAUDEVILLIANS, TEASE FOR TWO).  ROB ROY opened at the Edinburgh Festival (Scotland) in 2006 to rave reviews, and was recorded in 2007. More recently, THE THREE DAVIDS (the music of David Shire, David Frishberg, and David Warrack) premiered in 2013.  A SNOW WHITE CHRISTMAS, written with Norm Foster, premiered at Theatre Collingwood in 2014. The Oratorio ABRAHAM premiered in Toronto in 2015 with Richard Margison in the starring role, along with a cast of 6, plus the Bach Children’s Choir and the Elmer Iseler Singers.   Current: SHE’S NO LADY in workshop; CATWALK optioned as a film. Beginning with the 1972 radio special of the Charlottetown Festival’s BALLADE (orchestrator, conductor), over 40 years as a studio musician.  Recent: THE SECOND TIME AROUND (film). Huge body of choral and instrumental work. Created role of Jack Ayre in THE DUMBELLS at the Charlottetown Festival.  Shared the stage over the years with iconic performers, including Ronnie Hawkins, Don Harron, Len Cariou (most recently at 2013 Stratford Music Festival), Sheila McCarthy, Marilyn Lightstone, Sheila Brand, Brent Carver, Louise Pitre, Juan Chioran, George Masswohl, Mary Pitt, Thom Allison, Ma Anne Dionisio, Cynthia Dale, and Amanda Martinez.  Recently performed with the Bravura Baritones. Playing for Blues/Gospel Diva Jackie Richardson in October and November.  THE UNIVERSE IS DANCING (one man show) in October (Guelph, then the Jazz Bistro in Toronto).  CD release Hugh’s Room. In December.Christmas/Hanukkah show with Theresa Tova. 1980: produced TORONTO TORONTO, which ran for three years, followed by 2 years of TORONTO TORONTO 2. 1981: He had six shows running simultaneously in Toronto and he produced the award-winning CBC television superspecial  ALL FOR ONE. 1981 – 1983, he produced the Dora Mavor Moore Award shows for Toronto theatre, the only three years they were ever televised. He has won three Doras: producing TORONTO TORONTO, producing ON TAP, and music directing CLOSER THAN EVER. Starting in 1985, he was a regular guest on Peter Gzowski’s MORNINGSIDE (CBC radio) singing his trademark satirical songs, and creating songs spontaneously. Organist/Choir Director at Hillcrest Christian Church since 2006. Part of three man artistic team (along with Michael James and Kevin McCormick) who created SONGS OF THE CITY for United Way Toronto (now United Way Toronto/York Region) in 2015, a theatrical event originally presented at the Jane Mallet Theatre, which matches up three United Way speakers who have been “rescued” by a United Way sponsored organization with a three composers who each write a song about his or her experience. These songs are then performed during the evening, along with other selections which celebrate the renewal of the human spirit.  A second SOTC took place this past spring, and a third is happening in April, 2017, moving into the 1,000-seat Wintergarden Theatre.  A version took place last year in Fredericton, New Brunswick , and one is being planned for Halifax, Nova Scotia early in 2017.  Created as a Donor Appreciation Event, SONGS OF THE CITY has had a huge impact already in terms of increased pledges to support the remarkable work of United Way in the community. While the ongoing involvement in the various segments of the arts community has not allowed David the time to contribute to the education of up and coming artists that he might have preferred, he has maintained a presence in developing students to become professional artists.  For 20 years, he has been on the faculty of the Avenue Road Arts School. He participated in the BMI Music Theatre Workshops in New York and Toronto, originally conceived by Lehman Engel.  When BMI no longer supported the Toronto workshops, Mr. Warrack kept them going on his own initiative. He has taught part-time at the Randolph Academy and the Ryerson Theatre School, and given numerous guest lectures at Sheridan College (now University).  For many years he was on the advisory board of Humber College, and he is currently on the advisory board of the Toronto Film School. He is also an honorary member of IATSE. David is married to Lona Davis, a celebrated musician in her own right, and they are blessed with three children – Gordon (Jessica), Cayleigh (Patrick) and Levi, as well as four grandchildren: Alexis, Grayson, Griffin, and Neave, all three years old or younger! E.B. Smith grew up with a father who, as baseball player with Chicago Cubs, understood what it meant to dream. The Chicago Cubs hold Major League Baseball's longest championships drought going from 1908 to 2016 without winning a world series. Smith's father understood the value of hard work and practice in pursuit of a dream. So when Smith's dream of performing on the Festival stage at The Stratford Festival finally came true he took his father on a tour of the theatre to share his joy and excitement of performing in the legendary theatre. Together they snuck onto the thrust stage and Smith's father had the opportunity to stand where legendary actors from Brian Bedford and Len Cariou to Maggie Smith and Jessica Tandy have performed. Looking around the theatre from centre stage Smith's father said “This is the big leagues. This is your Wrigley Field,” comparing the Festival stage to Chicago's legendary baseball park. Smith's mother was an academic, in our conversation Smith describes his home life as an eclectic scene with athletes, deep thinkers and a grandfather with a great sense of humor. Our podcast covers Smith's path to success, from his home in Chicago to university in Ohio and life as an American born actor working in Canada.

In episode 5, Richard II is in the spotlight — right where he likes to be. This is the diva king who loves to hear himself talk but is tragically lacking leadership skills beyond his talents as an orator. Shakespeare’s late 1590s play about the king usurped 200 years prior raises compelling questions about the nature of leaders’ relationships with their subjects. Discussing all this and more in this episode are guests UC Davis professor Frances Dolan, Oregon Shakespeare Festival actor Christopher Liam Moore, and Len Cariou (known for his current role on CBS series "Blue Bloods" and for originating the role of Sweeney Todd), who recalls how "Richard II" inspired him early in his theater career.

Len Cariou looks back over his career on stage, from his days with his own cabaret act in his native Canada to his immersion into classical theatre at the Manitoba Theatre Center and the Stratford Festival to his triumphs on Broadway in two Sondheim premieres. Along the way, he tells the stories of his first meeting with director Harold Prince, his "A Little Night Music" audition -- for the role of Carl-Magnus, which he was prepared to turn down -- and why he actually did turn down the role of Frederik when it was offered; and the experience of the very first preview of "Sweeney Todd" -- which took place with the show not having completed a full tech rehearsal. Original air date - February 2, 2007.
