We are in for a treat in this episode of The Corner of Story and Game as we are graced by TWO brilliant writers/designers! Xalavier Nelson Jr. and Winter Mullenix stop by to explore the vital topic of inclusion and diversity as it applies to the craft of storytelling. It is a topic that I have wanted to create some space to explore for quite awhile now, and I am extremely honoured that these two masters of their craft were gracious enough to share their thoughts and experiences with me. With dozens of games under his belt, Xalavier is renowned for titles like "Hypnospace Outlaw,” “Stranger Things VR,” and "An Airport for Aliens Currently Run by Dogs." Winter is an experienced writer and narrative designer with a whole swath of credentials, including over four years as Senior Narrative Designer at Cryptic Studios, working on the Neverwinter MMO. Xalavier also talked about his newest game, Space Warlord Organ Trading Simulator, and he shared how his work as a pre-teen game journalist helped him become a narrative designer. The 6th annual festival runs from September 23-27 and gives way to a host of happenings, from panels and talks to demos and trailers. There's four days' worth of stuff, so there's a lot to see.Today (September 23) kicked off with a 45-minute Nintendo-style Direct presentation. The showcase ran through a myriad of trailers from independent developers like Strange Scaffold (An Airport for Aliens Currently Run by Dogs) and Whitethorn Games (Lake). Not every game shown during the GDoCExpo Direct had a release date, but most are coming to Steam and Xbox. There seems to be something for everyone, with one particular game I'm stoked about being A Shiba Story, a slice-of-life adventure sim developed by Foxdog Farms where you play as a dog sitter for a Shiba Inu. It's cute.Support the show (https://bit.ly/2XdAlJC)

Che dire terminò con un wof wof.ENGLISH TRANSLATIONAn airport for aliens that is currently run by dogs. This is the title of the last video game that caught my attention, so much so that I went to look for it, I looked at the trailer I read an article published in The Guardian (I will put all the notes of all the links in the program notes ) 'An Airport for Aliens Currently Run by Dogs' is a very strange video game where in the title there is already all the explanation. We are the only living beings left alive in the universe, we and our partner, she too is in one of these airports who knows where in the universe and we must try to meet. The airports are deserted, in fact, there is only us, and everywhere there are writings, but they are in a language that we do not know, so from time to time we are given boarding passes, directions, but in this unknown language that we must try to decipher. All this inside airports that are managed by dogs, they are not normal dogs, they are dogs that must be represented with archive images, stock images, images from image banks. It is a very funny thing, it is also a very alienating thing, because imagine the setting in this airport, an airport not drawn with photographic precision, you know lately, video games almost look like movies, well, not this one, this is clearly seen that the drawings are drawings, and the only images (real photos) are those of the dogs that we find in all ways in all shapes and form. They tell us more or less what to do, but you know, dogs want to be stroked, dogs want us to throw the stick so they can fetch. It's interesting because I hardly play video games, but I like it when I find video games that have different premises than the usual shooting and world conquest. This video game gives us the opportunity to reflect on, I'm not saying reflect on who we are, but reflect about the things we do, about the spaces in which we move. It is a small independent game, so it is not one of those that go to the big production houses, so surely a small team worked on it, even though the author of the game is a very well known author among those who know about video games: Xalavier Nelson Jr. has made some very interesting video games. That's it, I just wanted to share this little gem with you. I don't know if I'll buy it, I repeat because I don't play video games, but I like to read about video games. Surely it is something that jumped to my eyes and that intrigued me. What can I say more? I'll end with woof woof.

Want to hear something surprising, unusual, or downright weird? This week's show has all three of those covered. Jamie Katz – Licensed Pet Detective When a beloved dog goes missing, we tend to panic. We assume the worst: dognapping! We tend to not think clearly about how to best begin a search. That's where a licensed Private Investigator can be of help. Jamie Katz is just such a professional ... who exclusively works to get pets back home. This real-life, bonafide Pet Detective offers tips and insights. And you won't want to miss the story about her latest super-success story.  Stray – A New Documentary Filmmaker Elizabeth Lo takes us to the streets of Istanbul in her new documentary Stray. It's illegal to capture and hold or kill stray dogs in the Turkish capital … which may make them the city's most interesting denizens. Filmed at dog level, Lo takes us on a long walk with the dogs. We play in parks, march in protests, visit a couple “dog restaurants, and listen in on everyday conversations. Lo crafts a poignant, wordless portrait of a way of life where dogs and humans interconnect by the multitude … to explore the inherent value of all beings. The Airport for Aliens Currently Run by Dogs When virtual reality changes your reality, you know you're truly in the matrix. Indie Game Developer and Award-Winning Narrative Director, Xalavier Nelson Jr., once identified as a cat person … but became a dog person by creating a video game that deals in absurdity. The Airport for Aliens Currently Run by Dogs asks the question “what happens if you and your loved one are the only humans left … and you are separated by galaxies … and what if dogs are the ones running the alien airport you must use to reunite?” Using unabashedly joyful stock photo dogs in his game ended up changing his view on the species. Now he now has a real-life dog – something that wouldn't have happened without the game.
