Preorders for Dragon Age: The Veilguard are apparently poor. It might have something to do with the fact the game is now basically a cartoon, the character creator looks like trash, and the devs don't even know characters from the series. We discuss this train wreck of a sequel along with The Gamer actually admitting the protagonist of Star Wars Outlaws is ugly, a Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts dev discussing why he makes characters hot, the Concord director stepping down, Elder Scrolls Online's first nonbinary character, and Game Devs of Color Expo.

Professor Scott Méxcal sits down with three of Seattle's preeminent tattoo artists to chat about life behind the needle. In this discussion, they will explore the history of tattooing, tattoo cultural traditions, and the personal journeys of tattoo artists Sonrisa Barron, Suzanna Fisher, and Dustin Burt. About the artists: Sonrisa Barron is the owner and lead artist at Serpent Tattoo LLC, established in 2023 in Olympia, WA. With a Bachelor's degree from Evergreen State College and extensive training via a long-term apprenticeship, Barron specializes in neo-traditional and illustrative tattoo styles. Barron believes that tattooing is not just about creating a beautiful piece of art, but also about creating an energetic exchange that promotes healing and clarity. Suzanna Fisher was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest and has always felt lucky to live amongst the beauty and diversity that can be found here. Shortly after graduating with a degree in Visual Art from the University of Washington, Suzanna began a tattoo apprenticeship and the fates were forever sealed. Tattooing allows Suzanna to collaborate with clients to realize their vision of personal adornment through a shared appreciation of nature and with respect for this ancient art. Suzanna has been tattooing professionally since 2007 and has owned and operated Bellwether Tattoo in the Wallingford neighborhood of Seattle since 2014. Dustin Burt specializes in realistic tattoos through the Black and Grey tattoo technique and has developed a style of his own. With a degree from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and over ten years of tattooing experience, Dustin Burt strives to continually develop as an artist while providing the highest caliber of artwork to his clients. In 2021 Dustin was featured in MoPop's tattoo exhibition “Body of Work: Tattoo Culture. About the Moderator: Scott Méxcal is a public artist, scholar, and art activist. Born and raised in Albuquerque New Mexico, Scott grew up amongst the Nopal and Yucca learning the fundamentals of Chicano Street Art. In 2000, Scott moved to the PNW to earn his BFA from Northwest College of Art and later studied classical painting at Gage Academy of Art in the Aristides Atelier. In 2022, Scott was awarded an MFA through Prescott College in Social and Environmental Practice Art. Scott has lectured at the Seattle Artists of Color Expo and Symposium (ACES), created public art projects, commissions, and exhibitions throughout Seattle, and supports the fight to close the NW Detention Center with Tsuru for Solidarity and La Resistencia. Presented by Town Hall Seattle and Gage Arts Academy.

Today, I'm talking to Catt Small.-Catt, on this day of posting, is on a work sabbatical. Before, Catt worked at All Turtles. an early-stage startup studio, as the Director of Product Design. Before All Turtles, she worked at Asana, Etsy, Soundcloud, and other companies. Also, in 2016, Catt co-founded Game Devs of Color Expo, an organization with a mission to amplify the creative power held by people of color in games.-I first discovered Catt through her wonderfully playful website. And what I discovered was a treasure trove of her blog articles, talks, and resources! To this day, I am still amazed by her willingness to give back to the design community. So, naturally, after spending hours consuming her content, I was like, “I have to reach out to her!” And lo and behold, we're here! And it was an absolute blast. We focused on solely one topic - junior designer. So if you're a junior designer, you'll love this one. So, without further ado, here was my conversation with Catt Small.===Highlights⭐ What makes a junior designer stand out?⭐ How to speak up in meetings⭐ What is one thing that you wished you knew before entering the “real world”?⭐ How to grow as a junior designer⭐ Should junior designers specialize or generalize?===Links

Link to Article: https://bit.ly/3iksUKdGame Devs of Color Expo Was SuperbThe Game Devs of Color Expo, an event showcasing the diverse talent in games while providing a platform for creators of color, is officially underway. The 6th annual festival runs from September 23-27 and gives way to a host of happenings, from panels and talks to demos and trailers. There's four days' worth of stuff, so there's a lot to see.Today (September 23) kicked off with a 45-minute Nintendo-style Direct presentation. The showcase ran through a myriad of trailers from independent developers like Strange Scaffold (An Airport for Aliens Currently Run by Dogs) and Whitethorn Games (Lake). Not every game shown during the GDoCExpo Direct had a release date, but most are coming to Steam and Xbox. There seems to be something for everyone, with one particular game I'm stoked about being A Shiba Story, a slice-of-life adventure sim developed by Foxdog Farms where you play as a dog sitter for a Shiba Inu. It's cute.Support the show (https://bit.ly/2XdAlJC)

This week on Waypoint Radio we're getting political. Patrick, Cado, and Austin are all playing Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and we get into who picked the right house. Who's to say whether a monarchy or a ruling class is better? Rob's got some ideas that seem to be backed by historical knowledge, but Cado thinks it's Sophie's choice, honestly. We also discuss the messy tutorialization: why does it explain a combat mechanic during downtime? What's with all of these unexplained mechanics? Why do they turn off the enemy's attack range after the first mission? Then Austin and Cado talk about the games and panels they saw as last weekend's Game Devs of Color Expo. Come for the surreal RPGs, stay for the rubber fish controler. Rob's computer then breaks so the rest of the crew discuss the wild story of how Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 was translated by fans over the span of 20 years. Episode 54 of Caming Couch! (Heads up, the walls in my apartment are a bit thin. So when my neighbor decided to take a shower when I was already deep in recording...yeah. If you hear a slight hiss/hum while I am talking that was it. I tried to talk a little louder to keep myself clear during that time). I am tired and going completely unscripted today, even though I made the change after episode 50. Remember, the rules don't matter, and this is something important I want to talk about while it is still 100% fresh in my mind. Anyway....you know how I had this idea and plan to do this list episode today? You also know how there are no rules for the podcast? Yeah...we aren't doing that today. I had a chance to go to the Game Devs of Color Expo and there was a great message I get there that just needed to be shared. So that's today's episode. Talking about being the creator you want to be. If there is a game you want to have and story you want to tell just do it. We'll talk about some games that I had to chance to play and also share some stories from the developers about them. If you like anything you hear in the games check out their socail media and websites: Super Space Club: https://grahamoflegend.com/superspaceclub/ Portal Tamers: @portaltamers and https://www.facebook.com/PortalTamers/ she dreams elsewhere: @studiozevere and https://www.studiozevere.com/ Fiction Sphere: @einherjarteam and https://www.facebook.com/TeamEinherjar Chrono Ghost: @NITETIMEStudios and http://nitetimestudios.com/ (Seriously, 10 bucks on Steam. Give them a shout at https://www.facebook.com/decoygames and @DecoyGames Lastly, Playcrafting heads many of these events that go on in NYC and other areas. Check them out online. The next Play NYC is coming up August 10th-11th and I highly recommend going. The experience is great. https://playcrafting.com/ This is Smartboy signing off for now. And seriously, in case I managed to horribly ruin the message in the episode, I want to make it clear. Don't be afraid to make something. If you want to create something, do it. Make it. Be ready to change it, tweak, even fail at it the first time just to do a second take. Just make and know that you can always continue it and make it better. Smartboy
