Hair fall in both women and men is more than just an aesthetic issue. According to triple-certified functional medicine nutritionist Julie Olson, losing hair is often a "gift," a signal from your body urging you to pay attention to what's out of balance. After watching her hair fall out in clumps, Julie became determined to find the root causes of hair loss. In this episode, Julie reveals the four functional categories of most hair loss: digestive issues, inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and stress. She explains how these factors intertwine and contribute to hair loss, overall health decline, and a shortened lifespan. Julie also shares her powerful 5R protocol – a comprehensive approach to treating hair loss from the inside out."If your hair is falling out, it's not a lack of Rogaine or certain shampoo...there's something out of balance in your body." ~Julie OlsonAbout Julie Olson:Julie Olson is a triple-certified functional medicine nutritionist, board-certified in holistic nutrition, and a certified gluten-free practitioner. Today, Ali and Asif review the new documentary about Louis CK, ‘Sorry / Not Sorry' (1:53). They start off by discussing Louis CK's background, his blockbuster success as a stand up comedian and how he changed the financial model of stand up comedy specials. Then then discuss his sexual impropriety as outlined in the New York Times as well as in the documentary. The guys go over what they perceive as his lack of an apology as well as how CK was definitely not “canceled”. Louis CK does suffer from male pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia), so in the second half of the episode, the guys discuss hair transplants (28:36) (N.B. Louis CK has never stated that he has had a hair transplant). Asif starts off by discussing how common baldness is and what causes it in most men. He then goes over other treatments for baldness like ‘Rogaine' and ‘Propecia'. He then goes over what hair transplants entail, the procedure, the costs, and the outcomes. We discuss the woe-is-me posturing of non-scientist Graham Hancock, and his ludicrous theories about an advanced civilization wiped out by the last ice age, which spread its knowledge far and wide, and thus is responsible for all of the ancient structures we normally credit to people like the Egyptians, the Mayans, etcetera. I should mention we had a strange interference pattern occur during the recording process, but I'm sure nothing untoward, or very Stupid, happened. See you in a couple of weeks. Hosted on Acast. Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Marah Hehemann, an assistant professor of urology and the Associate Program Director of Andrology at the University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Hehemann specializes in male sexual function and fertility and also practices clinically at the university. Hair loss can be a distressing experience for many men, leading them to seek out treatments like minoxidil (Rogaine) and finasteride (Propecia). However, these popular medications may come with potential side effects that impact sexual function. Minoxidil is unlikely to significantly affect erectile function when applied topically, as only about 1% of the medication is absorbed into the bloodstream. On the other hand, finasteride, which blocks the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), has been associated with a 5-10% chance of negatively impacting sexual function, including reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, ejaculatory problems, and decreased sexual pleasure. These effects have been reported with both the higher 5mg dose used for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and the lower 1mg dose for male pattern baldness. Kia ora e te whānau! This week, Eugene and Matt have the distinct pleasure to speak to Greig Hamilton and let us tell you this has been a long time coming! In case you don't know, Greig Hamilton became the first Kiwi finisher of the Barkley Marathons. It was his third crack, having knocked off fun runs in 2019 and 2022. This year there were five finishers, including the first female finisher, Jasmine Paris. Barkley is a five-loop course in the Frozen Head National Park in Tennessee. Greig is from Christchurch, he's a two-time world champion in the Rogaine, and, by all accounts, one of the most self-effacing human beings around. However with the help of our sources we managed to crack the nut for a wonderful conversation – five years after we first asked him. We talk about Greig's beginnings in sport, how he was “abysmal” at running (then got better), adventure racing, the burden of an endeavour like Barkley on loved ones, the difference between suffering and enjoyment, and some details about the race itself. On today's Fit Girl Magic episode, Faraz Khan candidly discusses his personal journey with hair loss, a battle that began during his college years. He delves into the various treatments he's tried, ranging from natural remedies to hair transplant surgery. Faraz highlights the significance of proactive measures in combatting hair thinning and promoting regrowth, even in the face of genetic factors. Yes, even for women. Faraz takes a deep dive into the scientific aspects of hair loss, shedding light on the roles played by hormones such as testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). He distinguishes between early-onset hair loss in men following puberty and the experiences of women post-35 due to hormonal shifts. When you tune in you'll better understand several key hair loss topics, including the interplay between stress, nutrition, and hair health, the dynamics of the hair growth cycle affecting length and thickness, and the effectiveness of maintaining a consistent hair care routine, along with do products like castor oil and Rogaine actually help. Faraz introduces his holistic four-step system designed to combat hair thinning, consisting of a supplement, serum, derma roller, and bamboo hairbrush. He emphasizes the importance of consistency in achieving success with this approach. Faraz and I also discuss the broader theme of graceful aging, exploring the variations in the onset of gray hair among different racial groups and the factors influencing premature graying, such as genetics and stress. We did touch on gray hair and Faraz recommends taking a proactive approach as soon as the first gray strands appear. Thyroid and Menopause Madness Podcast with Dr. Joni Labbe, DC, CCN, DCCN
On this episode, Dr. Labbe delved deep into the topic of hair loss, which despite not being one of society's most pressing issues, is an important health concern that deserves attention. Here are the key points discussed:The Body's Prioritization: Our bodies, in their wisdom, divert energy and nutrients from hair, skin, and nails to vital organs like the heart, lungs, kidneys, and thyroid in order to optimize overall health.Alopecia and Other Conditions: We explored various reasons for hair loss, such as alopecia, an autoimmune disease that can cause hair loss in patches or completely, which is often linked to thyroid issues like Hashimoto's. Other autoimmune diseases such as lupus and untreated celiac disease can also contribute to hair loss.Role of High Testosterone: PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) or high testosterone levels can contribute to hair loss. Imbalances like insulin resistance, or an imbalance of estrogen and progesterone, or even high cortisol may be at play.Hormonal Fluctuations: During menopause and perimenopause, fluctuations in hormones may lead to hair loss. Also, the quantity of active thyroid hormone (T3) can have an impact on hair growth.Medications and Their Side Effects: Medications can sometimes cause hair thinning, or other unpleasant side effects, and there's a need for caution in using products like Rogaine whose long-term effects are unknown.Natural Approach: We discussed the benefits of a natural approach to hair loss, focusing on restoring balance to the body's hormones, neurotransmitters, etc.Science-backed Remedies: We discussed a range of remedies such as evening primrose, biotin, green tea, checking iron levels, lysine, arginine, Saw Palmetto, MSM, zinc, and stinging nettles.Importance of Diet: An anti-inflammatory diet filled with healthy fats, quality proteins, and lower glycemic foods can support hair health and aid in thyroid conversion.Stress Management: High stress levels and consequent high cortisol can contribute to hair loss. We highlighted the importance of finding stress relief activities that work for you.Positive Mindset: The power of positive thinking and its impact on the body's response was also stressed.Remember, reversing thyroid hair loss takes time, usually six to nine months, and it's usually the last thing to return when your body is regaining balance. But with time, patience, and the right approach, you should be able to see baby hairs coming back gradually. For more details or help with your thyroid issues, consider setting up a complimentary clarity call to discuss solutions to these complex symptoms.Resources:FEELING LOUSY IS NOT "JUST PART OF GETTING OLDER." Enter Sy Sperling: a man with a flat yet dulcet voice, a bald patch, and a dream. Rob teaches Ray a brief history of baldness in several cultures across the globe; how one man's backup ad eventually became one of the most successful and memeable commercials of the 1970s; how Rogaine disrupted the hair replacement industry through medical means; Rob's experience as both a patron and a promoter of hair-replacement solutions; and how Sy Sperling's business and hair-weave savvy led him to found an enterprise that continues serving loyal clients (of which he himself was one) to this day.
